Geometric Manin's conjecture in characteristic $p$

Geometric Manin's conjecture for complex Fano varieties describes the structure of the moduli space of curves. We propose a version of this conjecture in characteristic $p$ and describe its connection to the Batyrev--Manin--Peyre--Tschinkel conjecture over global fields. This is a survey paper written for a volume of the Summer Research Institute in Algebraic Geometry held at Colorado State University in 2025.

Geometric consistency of Manin's Conjecture

We conjecture that the exceptional set in Manin's Conjecture has an explicit geometric description. Our proposal includes the rational point contributions from any generically finite map with larger geometric invariants. We prove that this set is contained in a thin subset of rational points, verifying there is no counterexample to Manin's Conjecture which arises from an incompatibility of geometric invariants.

On upper bounds of Manin type

We introduce a certain birational invariant of a polarized algebraic variety and use that to obtain upper bounds for the counting functions of rational points on algebraic varieties. Using our theorem, we obtain new upper bounds of Manin type for 28 deformation types of smooth Fano $3$-folds of Picard rank $\geq 2$ following Mori-Mukai's classification. We also find new upper bounds for polarized K3 surfaces $S$ of Picard rank $1$ using Bayer-Macrì's result on the nef cone of the Hilbert scheme of two points on $S$.

Kodaira dimension of moduli of special cubic fourfolds

A special cubic fourfold is a smooth hypersurface of degree three and dimension four that contains a surface not homologous to a complete intersection. Special cubic fourfolds give rise to a countable family of Noether-Lefschetz divisors C_d in the moduli space C of smooth cubic fourfolds. These divisors are irreducible 19-dimensional varieties birational to certain orthogonal modular varieties. We use the "low-weight cusp form trick" of Gritsenko, Hulek, and Sankaran to obtain information about the Kodaira dimension of C_d. For example, if d = 6n + 2, then we show that C_d is of general type for n > 18, n not in {20,21,25}, it has nonnegative Kodaira dimension if n > 13 and if n is not equal to 15. In combination with prior work of Hassett, Lai, and Nuer, our investigation leaves only 20 values of d for which no information on the Kodaira dimension of C_d is known. We discuss some questions pertaining to the arithmetic of K3 surfaces raised by our results.

Balanced line bundles on Fano varieties

A conjecture of Batyrev and Manin relates arithmetic properties of varieties with ample anticanonical class to geometric invariants; in particular, counting functions defined by metrized ample line bundles and the corresponding asymptotics of rational points of bounded height are interpreted in terms of cones of effective divisors and certain thresholds with respect to these cones. This framework leads to the notion of balanced line bundles, whose counting functions, conjecturally, capture generic distributions of rational points. We investigate balanced line bundles in the context of the Minimal Model Program, with special regard to the classification of Fano threefolds.

Balanced line bundles and equivariant compactifications of homogeneous spaces

Manin's conjecture predicts an asymptotic formula for the number of rational points of bounded height on a smooth projective variety in terms of its global geometric invariants. The strongest form of the conjecture implies certain inequalities among geometric invariants of the variety and of its subvarieties. We provide a general geometric framework explaining these phenomena, via the notion of balanced line bundles, and prove the required inequalities for a large class of equivariant compactifications of homogeneous spaces.
