N=1 conformal dualities

We consider on one hand the possibility that a supersymmetric ${\cal N}=1$ conformal gauge theory has a strongly coupled locus on the conformal manifold at which a different, dual, conformal gauge theory becomes a good weakly coupled description. On the other hand we discuss the possibility that strongly coupled theories, e.g. SCFTs in class ${\cal S}$, having exactly marginal ${\cal N}=1$ deformations admit a weakly coupled gauge theory description on some locus of the conformal manifold. We present a simple algorithm to search for such dualities and discuss several concrete examples. In particular we find conformal duals for ${\cal N}=1$ SQCD models with $G_2$ gauge group and a model with $SU(4)$ gauge group in terms of simple quiver gauge theories. We also find conformal weakly coupled quiver theory duals for a variety of class ${\cal S}$ theories: $T_4$, $R_{0,4}$, $R_{2,5}$, and rank $2n$ Minahan-Nemeschansky $E_6$ theories. Finally we derive conformal Lagrangians for four dimensional theories obtained by compactifying the E-string on genus $g>1$ surface with zero flux. The pairs of dual Lagrangians at the weakly coupled loci have different symmetries which are broken on a general point of the conformal manifold. We match the dimensions of the conformal manifolds, symmetries on the generic locus of the conformal manifold, anomalies, and supersymmetric indices. The simplicity of the procedure suggests that such dualities are ubiquitous.

Minimal $(D,D)$ conformal matter and generalizations of the van Diejen model

We consider supersymmetric surface defects in compactifications of the $6d$ minimal $(D_{N+3},D_{N+3})$ conformal matter theories on a punctured Riemann surface. For the case of $N=1$ such defects are introduced into the supersymmetric index computations by an action of the $BC_1\,(\sim A_1\sim C_1)$ van Diejen model. We (re)derive this fact using three different field theoretic descriptions of the four dimensional models. The three field theoretic descriptions are naturally associated with algebras $A_{N=1}$, $C_{N=1}$, and $(A_1)^{N=1}$. The indices of these $4d$ theories give rise to three different Kernel functions for the $BC_1$ van Diejen model. We then consider the generalizations with $N>1$. The operators introducing defects into the index computations are certain $A_{N}$, $C_N$, and $(A_1)^{N}$ generalizations of the van Diejen model. The three different generalizations are directly related to three different effective gauge theory descriptions one can obtain by compactifying the minimal $(D_{N+3},D_{N+3})$ conformal matter theories on a circle to five dimensions. We explicitly compute the operators for the $A_N$ case, and derive various properties these operators have to satisfy as a consequence of $4d$ dualities following from the geometric setup. In some cases we are able to verify these properties which in turn serve as checks of said dualities. As a by-product of our constructions we also discuss a simple Lagrangian description of a theory corresponding to compactification on a sphere with three maximal punctures of the minimal $(D_5,D_5)$ conformal matter and as consequence give explicit Lagrangian constructions of compactifications of this 6d SCFT on arbitrary Riemann surfaces.

Schur Indices of Class $\mathcal{S}$ and Quasimodular Forms

We investigate the unflavoured Schur indices of class $\mathcal S$ theories of modest rank, and in the case of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory with special unitary gauge group of somewhat more general rank, with an eye towards their modular properties. We find closed form expressions for many of these theories in terms of quasimodular forms of level one or two, with the curious feature that in general they are sums of quasimodular forms of different weights. For type $\mathfrak{a}_1$ theories, the index can be fixed by taking a simple Ansatz for the family of quasimodular forms appearing in the expansion of this type and demanding that the result be sufficiently regular as $q\to0$. For higher rank cases, an equally simple construction is lacking, but we nevertheless find that these indices can be expressed in terms of mixed-weight quasimodular forms.

${\cal N}=1$ conformal duals of gauged $E_n$ MN models

We suggest three new ${\cal N}=1$ conformal dual pairs. First, we argue that the ${\cal N}=2$ $E_6$ Minahan-Nemeschansky (MN) theory with a $USp(4)$ subgroup of the $E_6$ global symmetry conformally gauged with an ${\cal N}=1$ vector multiplet and certain additional chiral multiplet matter resides at some cusp of the conformal manifold of an $SU(2)^5$ quiver gauge theory. Second, we argue that the ${\cal N}=2$ $E_7$ MN theory with an $SU(2)$ subgroup of the $E_7$ global symmetry conformally gauged with an ${\cal N}=1$ vector multiplet and certain additional chiral multiplet matter resides at some cusp of the conformal manifold of a conformal ${\cal N}=1$ $USp(4)$ gauge theory. Finally, we claim that the ${\cal N}=2$ $E_8$ MN theory with a $USp(4)$ subgroup of the $E_8$ global symmetry conformally gauged with an ${\cal N}=1$ vector multiplet and certain additional chiral multiplet matter resides at some cusp of the conformal manifold of an ${\cal N}=1$ $Spin(7)$ conformal gauge theory. We argue for the dualities using a variety of non-perturbative techniques including anomaly and index computations. The dualities can be viewed as ${\cal N}=1$ analogues of ${\cal N}=2$ Argyres-Seiberg/Argyres-Wittig duals of the $E_n$ MN models. We also briefly comment on an ${\cal N}=1$ version of the Schur limit of the superconformal index.

On the reduction of 4d N=1 theories on S^2

We discuss reductions of general N=1 four dimensional gauge theories on S^2. The effective two dimensional theory one obtains depends on the details of the coupling of the theory to background fields, which can be translated to a choice of R-symmetry. We argue that, for special choices of R-symmetry, the resulting two dimensional theory has a natural interpretation as an N=(0,2) gauge theory. As an application of our general observations, we discuss reductions of N=1 and N=2 dualities and argue that they imply certain two dimensional dualities.

Rank $Q$ E-string on a torus with flux

We discuss compactifications of rank $Q$ E-string theory on a torus with fluxes for abelian subgroups of the $E_8$ global symmetry of the $6d$ SCFT. We argue that the theories corresponding to such tori are built from a simple model we denote as $E[USp(2Q)]$. This model has a variety of non trivial properties. In particular the global symmetry is $USp(2Q)\times USp(2Q)\times U(1)^2$ with one of the two $USp(2Q)$ symmetries emerging in the IR as an enhancement of an $SU(2)^Q$ symmetry of the UV Lagrangian. The $E[USp(2Q)]$ model after dimensional reduction to $3d$ and a subsequent Coulomb branch flow is closely related to the familiar $3d$ $T[SU(Q)]$ theory, the model residing on an S-duality domain wall of $4d$ $\mathcal{N}=4$ $SU(Q)$ SYM. Gluing the $E[USp(2Q)]$ models by gauging the $USp(2Q)$ symmetries with proper admixtures of chiral superfields gives rise to systematic constructions of many examples of $4d$ theories with emergent IR symmetries. We support our claims by various checks involving computations of anomalies and supersymmetric partition functions. Many of the needed identities satisfied by the supersymmetric indices follow directly from recent mathematical results obtained by E. Rains.

Sequences of $6d$ SCFTs on generic Riemann surfaces

We consider compactifications of $6d$ minimal $(D_{N+3},D_{N+3})$ type conformal matter SCFTs on a generic Riemann surface. We derive the theories corresponding to three punctured spheres (trinions) with three maximal punctures, from which one can construct models corresponding to generic surfaces. The trinion models are simple quiver theories with $\mathcal{N}=1$ $SU(2)$ gauge nodes. One of the three puncture non abelian symmetries is emergent in the IR. The derivation of the trinions proceeds by analyzing RG flows between conformal matter SCFTs with different values of $N$ and relations between their subsequent reductions to $4d$. In particular, using the flows we first derive trinions with two maximal and one minimal punctures, and then we argue that collections of $N$ minimal punctures can be interpreted as a maximal one. This suggestion is checked by matching the properties of the $4d$ models such as `t Hooft anomalies, symmetries, and the structure of the conformal manifold to the expectations from $6d$. We then use the understanding that collections of minimal punctures might be equivalent to maximal ones to construct trinions with three maximal punctures, and then $4d$ theories corresponding to arbitrary surfaces, for $6d$ models described by two $M5$ branes probing a $\mathbb{Z}_k$ singularity. This entails the introduction of a novel type of maximal puncture. Again, the suggestion is checked by matching anomalies, symmetries and the conformal manifold to expectations from six dimensions. These constructions thus give us a detailed understanding of compactifications of two sequences of six dimensional SCFTs to four dimensions.

SQCD and pairs of pants

We show that the $4d$ ${\cal N}=1$ $SU(3)$ $N_f=6$ SQCD is the model obtained when compactifying the rank one E-string theory on a three punctured sphere (a trinion) with a particular value of flux. The $SU(6)\times SU(6)\times U(1)$ global symmetry of the theory, when decomposed into the $SU(2)^3\times U(1)^3\times SU(6)$ subgroup, corresponds to the three $SU(2)$ symmetries associated to the three punctures and the $U(1)^3 \times SU(6)$ subgroup of the $E_8$ symmetry of the E-string theory. All the puncture symmetries are manifest in the UV and thus we can construct ordinary Lagrangians flowing in the IR to any compactification of the E-string theory. We generalize this claim and argue that the ${\cal N}=1$ $SU(N+2)$ SQCD in the middle of the conformal window, $N_f=2N+4$, is the theory obtained by compactifying the $6d$ minimal $(D_{N+3},D_{N+3})$ conformal matter SCFT on a sphere with two maximal $SU(N+1)$ punctures, one minimal $SU(2)$ puncture, and with a particular value of flux. The $SU(2N+4)\times SU(2N+4)\times U(1)$ symmetry of the UV Lagrangian decomposes into $SU(N+1)^2\times SU(2)$ puncture symmetries and the $U(1)^3\times SU(2N+4)$ subgroup of the $SO(12+4N)$ symmetry group of the $6d$ SCFT. The models constructed from the trinions exhibit a variety of interesting strong coupling effects. For example, one of the dualities arising geometrically from different pair-of-pants decompositions of a four punctured sphere is an $SU(N+2)$ generalization of the Intriligator-Pouliot duality of $SU(2)$ SQCD with $N_f=4$, which is a degenerate, $N=0$, instance of our discussion.

Weakly coupled conformal manifolds in 4d

We classify ${\cal N}=1$ gauge theories with simple gauge groups in four dimensions which possess a conformal manifold passing through weak coupling. A very rich variety of models is found once one allows for arbitrary representations under the gauge group. For each such model we detail the dimension of the conformal manifold, the conformal anomalies, and the global symmetry preserved on a generic locus of the manifold. We also identify, at least some, sub-loci of the conformal manifolds preserving more symmetry than the generic locus. Several examples of applications of the classification are discussed. In particular we consider a conformal triality such that one of the triality frames is a $USp(6)$ gauge theory with six fields in the two index traceless antisymmetric representation. We discuss an IR dual of a conformal $Spin(5)$ gauge theory with two chiral superfields in the vector representation and one in the fourteen dimensional representation. Finally, an extension of the conformal manifold of ${\cal N}=2$ class ${\cal S}$ theories by conformally gauging symmetries corresponding to maximal punctures with the addition of two adjoint chiral superfields is commented upon.

From 6d flows to 4d flows

SCFTs in six dimensions are interrelated by networks of RG flows. Compactifying such models on a Riemann surface with flux for the $6d$ global symmetry, one can obtain a wide variety of theories in four dimensions. These four dimensional models are also related by a network of RG flows. In this paper we study some examples of four dimensional flows relating theories that can be obtained from six dimensions starting with different SCFTs connected by $6d$ RG flows. We compile a dictionary between different orders of such flows, $6d\to 6d\to 4d$ and $6d\to 4d\to 4d$, in the particular case when the six dimensional models are the ones residing on M5 branes probing different $A$-type singularities. The flows we study are triggered by vacuum expectation values (vevs) to certain operators charged under the six dimensional symmetry. We find that for generic choices of parameters the different orders of flows, $6d\to 6d\to 4d$ and $6d\to 4d\to 4d$, involve compactifications on different Riemann surfaces with the difference being in the number of punctures the surface has.

Star shaped quivers with flux

We study the compactification of the 6d ${\cal N}=(2,0)$ SCFT on the product of a Riemann surface with flux and a circle. On the one hand, this can be understood by first reducing on the Riemann surface, giving rise to 4d ${\cal N}=1$ and ${\cal N}=2$ class ${\cal S}$ theories, which we then reduce on $S^1$ to get 3d ${\cal N}=2$ and ${\cal N}=4$ class ${\cal S}$ theories. On the other hand, we may first compactify on $S^1$ to get the 5d ${\cal N}=2$ Yang-Mills theory. By studying its reduction on a Riemann surface, we obtain a mirror dual description of 3d class ${\cal S}$ theories, generalizing the star-shaped quiver theories of Benini, Tachikawa, and Xie. We comment on some global properties of the gauge group in these reductions, and test the dualities by computing various supersymmetric partition functions.

N=1 theories of class S_k

We construct classes of ${\cal N}=1$ superconformal theories elements of which are labeled by punctured Riemann surfaces. Degenerations of the surfaces correspond, in some cases, to weak coupling limits. Different classes are labeled by two integers (N,k). The k=1 case coincides with A_{N-1} ${\cal N}=2$ theories of class S and simple examples of theories with k>1 are Z_k orbifolds of some of the A_{N-1} class S theories. For the space of ${\cal N}=1$ theories to be complete in an appropriate sense we find it necessary to conjecture existence of new ${\cal N}=1$ strongly coupled SCFTs. These SCFTs when coupled to additional matter can be related by dualities to gauge theories. We discuss in detail the A_1 case with k=2 using the supersymmetric index as our analysis tool. The index of theories in classes with k>1 can be constructed using eigenfunctions of elliptic quantum mechanical models generalizing the Ruijsenaars-Schneider integrable model. When the elliptic curve of the model degenerates these eigenfunctions become polynomials with coefficients being algebraic expressions in fugacities, generalizing the Macdonald polynomials with rational coefficients appearing when k=1.

The superconformal index of theories of class $\cal S$

This is the 8th article in the collection of reviews "Exact results in N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories", ed. J. Teschner. The article reviews the superconformal index. It is often simpler to calculate than instanton partition functions, but nevertheless allows one to perform many nontrivial checks of conjectured dualities. It turns out to admit a representation in terms of a new type of topological field theory associated to the Riemann surfaces $C$ parameterising the class $\cal S$ theories.

3d dualities from 4d dualities

Many examples of low-energy dualities have been found in supersymmetric gauge theories with four supercharges, both in four and in three space-time dimensions. In these dualities, two theories that are different at high energies have the same low-energy limit. In this paper we clarify the relation between the dualities in four and in three dimensions. We show that every four dimensional duality gives rise to a three dimensional duality between theories that are similar, but not identical, to the dimensional reductions of the four dimensional dual gauge theories to three dimensions. From these specific three dimensional dualities one can flow to many other low-energy dualities, including known three dimensional dualities and many new ones. We discuss in detail the case of three dimensional SU(N_c) supersymmetric QCD theories, showing how to derive new duals for these theories from the four dimensional duality.

3d dualities from 4d dualities for orthogonal groups

We extend recent work on the relation of 4d and 3d IR dualities of supersymmetric gauge theories with four supercharges to the case of orthogonal gauge groups. The distinction between different SO(N) gauge theories in 4d plays an important role in this relation. We show that the 4d duality leads to a 3d duality between an SO(N_c) gauge theory with N_f flavors and an SO(N_f-N_c+2) theory with N_f flavors and extra singlets, and we derive its generalization in the presence of Chern-Simons terms. There are two different O(N) theories in 3d, which we denote by O(N)_\pm, and we also show that the O(N_c)_- gauge theory is dual to a Spin(N_f-N_c+2) theory, and derive from 4d the known duality between O(N_c)_+ and O(N_f-N_c+2)_+. We verify the consistency of these 3d dualities by various methods, including index computations.

Global Properties of Supersymmetric Theories and the Lens Space

We compute the supersymmetric partition function on L(r,1)xS^1, the lens space index, for 4d gauge theories related by supersymmetric dualities and involving non simply-connected groups. This computation is sensitive to the global properties of the underlying gauge group and to discrete theta angle parameters and thus distinguishes versions of dualities differing by such. We explicitly discuss N=1 so(N_c) Seiberg dualities and N=4 su(N_c) S-dualities.

On the N=2 superconformal index and eigenfunctions of the elliptic RS model

We define an infinite sequence of superconformal indices, I_n, generalizing the Schur index for N=2 theories. For theories of class S we then suggest a recursive technique to completely determine I_n. The information encoded in the sequence of indices is equivalent to the N=2 superconformal index depending on the maximal set of fugacities. Mathematically, the procedure suggested in this note provides a perturbative algorithm for computing a set of eigenfunctions of the elliptic Ruijsenaars-Schneider model.

S-duality and the N=2 Lens Space Index

We discuss some of the analytic properties of lens space indices for 4d N=2 theories of class S. The S-duality properties of these theories highly constrain the lens space indices, and imply in particular that they are naturally acted upon by a set of commuting difference operators corresponding to surface defects. We explicitly identify the difference operators to be a matrix-valued generalization of the elliptic Ruijsenaars-Schneider model. In a special limit these difference operators can be expressed naturally in terms of Cherednik operators appearing in the double affine Hecke algebras, with the eigenfunctions given by non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials.

Bootstrapping the superconformal index with surface defects

The analytic properties of the N = 2 superconformal index are given a physical interpretation in terms of certain BPS surface defects, which arise as the IR limit of supersymmetric vortices. The residue of the index at a pole in flavor fugacity is interpreted as the index of a superconformal field theory without this flavor symmetry, but endowed with an additional surface defect. The residue can be efficiently extracted by acting on the index with a difference operator of Ruijsenaars-Schneider type. By imposing the associativity constraints of S-duality, we are then able to evaluate the index of all generalized quiver theories of type A, for generic values of the three superconformal fugacities, with or without surface defects.

Exceptional Indices

Recently a prescription to compute the superconformal index for all theories of class S was proposed. In this paper we discuss some of the physical information which can be extracted from this index. We derive a simple criterion for the given theory of class S to have a decoupled free component and for it to have enhanced flavor symmetry. Furthermore, we establish a criterion for the "good", the "bad", and the "ugly" trichotomy of the theories. After interpreting the prescription to compute the index with non-maximal flavor symmetry as a residue calculus we address the computation of the index of the bad theories. In particular we suggest explicit expressions for the superconformal index of higher rank theories with E_n flavor symmetry, i.e. for the Hilbert series of the multi-instanton moduli space of E_n.

Gauge Theories and Macdonald Polynomials

We study the N=2 four-dimensional superconformal index in various interesting limits, such that only states annihilated by more than one supercharge contribute. Extrapolating from the SU(2) generalized quivers, which have a Lagrangian description, we conjecture explicit formulae for all A-type quivers of class S, which in general do not have one. We test our proposals against several expected dualities. The index can always be interpreted as a correlator in a two-dimensional topological theory, which we identify in each limit as a certain deformation of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory. The structure constants of the topological algebra are diagonal in the basis of Macdonald polynomials of the holonomies.

Hilbert Series for Moduli Spaces of Two Instantons

The Hilbert Series (HS) of the moduli space of two G instantons on C^2, where G is a simple gauge group, is studied in detail. For a given G, the moduli space is a singular hyperKahler cone with a symmetry group U(2) \times G, where U(2) is the natural symmetry group of C^2. Holomorphic functions on the moduli space transform in irreducible representations of the symmetry group and hence the Hilbert series admits a character expansion. For cases that G is a classical group (of type A, B, C, or D), there is an ADHM construction which allows us to compute the HS explicitly using a contour integral. For cases that G is of E-type, recent index results allow for an explicit computation of the HS. The character expansion can be expressed as an infinite sum which lives on a Cartesian lattice that is generated by a small number of representations. This structure persists for all G and allows for an explicit expressions of the HS to all simple groups. For cases that G is of type G_2 or F_4, discrete symmetries are enough to evaluate the HS exactly, even though neither ADHM construction nor index is known for these cases.

A Spin Chain for the Symmetric Product CFT_2

We consider "gauge invariant" operators in Sym^N T^4, the symmetric product orbifold of N copies of the 2d supersymmetric sigma model with T^4 target. We discuss a spin chain representation for single-cycle operators and study their two point functions at large N. We perform systematic calculations at the orbifold point ("tree level"), where non-trivial mixing is already present, and some sample calculations to first order in the blow-up mode of the orbifold ("one loop").

Diagrams for Symmetric Product Orbifolds

We develop a diagrammatic language for symmetric product orbifolds of two-dimensional conformal field theories. Correlation functions of twist operators are written as sums of diagrams: each diagram corresponds to a branched covering map from a surface where the fields are single-valued to the base sphere where twist operators are inserted. This diagrammatic language facilitates the study of the large N limit and makes more transparent the analogy between symmetric product orbifolds and free non-abelian gauge theories. We give a general algorithm to calculate the leading large N contribution to four-point correlators of twist fields.

From Matrices to Strings and Back

We discuss an explicit construction of a string dual for the Gaussian matrix model. Starting from the matrix model and employing Strebel differential techniques we deduce hints about the structure of the dual string. Next, following these hints a worldheet theory is constructed. The correlators in this string theory are assumed to localize on a finite set of points in the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. To each such point one associates a Feynman diagram contributing to the correlator in the dual matrix model, and thus recasts the worldsheet expression as a sum over Feynman diagrams.

S-duality and 2d Topological QFT

We study the superconformal index for the class of N=2 4d superconformal field theories recently introduced by Gaiotto. These theories are defined by compactifying the (2,0) 6d theory on a Riemann surface with punctures. We interpret the index of the 4d theory associated to an n-punctured Riemann surface as the n-point correlation function of a 2d topological QFT living on the surface. Invariance of the index under generalized S-duality transformations (the mapping class group of the Riemann surface) translates into associativity of the operator algebra of the 2d TQFT. In the A_1 case, for which the 4d SCFTs have a Lagrangian realization, the structure constants and metric of the 2d TQFT can be calculated explicitly in terms of elliptic gamma functions. Associativity then holds thanks to a remarkable symmetry of an elliptic hypergeometric beta integral, proved very recently by van de Bult.

Planar quark scattering at strong coupling and universality

We discuss scattering of fundamental matter in the planar and strong coupling limit via the AdS/CFT correspondence, generalizing the recently proposed calculation for adjoint matter due to Alday and Maldacena [arXiv:0705.0303]. Color decomposition of quark amplitudes is a key property allowing to repeat the procedure in the case of fundamental matter and to derive the relation of these strong coupling amplitudes to minimal area problems. We present the results for two different D3-D7 systems, one is only conformal in the planar limit and the other is exactly conformal. Our results suggest a universal behavior of scattering amplitudes at strong coupling and planar limit (both for gluons and quarks).

Toy models for closed string tachyon solitons

We present qualitative evidence that closed string tachyon solitons describe backgrounds of lower-dimensional sub-critical string theory. We show that a co-dimension one soliton in the low energy effective gravity-dilaton-tachyon theory in general has a flat string-frame metric, and a dilaton that grows in both directions away from the core, and is linear in the soliton worldvolume coordinates. Spacetime, as seen in the Einstein frame, is therefore effectively localized in (D-1)-dimensions, in which the dilaton is linear, in agreement with the linear dilaton background of the (D-1)-dimensional sub-critical string. We construct a number of exactly solvable toy models with specific tachyon potentials that exhibit these features, and address the question of finding solitons in the bosonic closed string field theory using the recent advances in computing the tachyon potential.

Imaginary time D-branes to all orders

Extending the work of Gaiotto, Itzhaki and Rastelli in hep-th/0304192, we derive a general prescription for computing amplitudes involving a periodic array of D-branes in imaginary time to arbitrary order. We use this prescription to show that closed string amplitudes with b boundaries are identical to closed string amplitudes with b additional insertions of a particular physical closed string state. We perform an explicit computation for the annulus, and argue on the basis of open and closed string field theory for higher order amplitudes. We also discuss possible subtleties in the prescription related to collisions of boundaries and insertions, and argue that they are harmless. This verifies the proposal that a periodic array of D-branes in imaginary time corresponds to a pure closed string background.
