A convergent low-wavenumber, high-frequency homogenization of the wave equation in periodic media with a source term

We pursue a low-wavenumber, second-order homogenized solution of the time-harmonic wave equation at both low and high frequency in periodic media with a source term whose frequency resides inside a band gap. Considering the wave motion in an unbounded medium $\mathbb{R}^d$ ($d\geqslant1$), we first use the (Floquet-)Bloch transform to formulate an equivalent variational problem in a bounded domain. By investigating the source term's projection onto certain periodic functions, the second-order model can then be derived via asymptotic expansion of the Bloch eigenfunction and the germane dispersion relationship. We establish the convergence of the second-order homogenized solution, and we include numerical examples to illustrate the convergence result.

Data completion algorithms and their applications in inverse acoustic scattering with limited-aperture backscattering data

We introduce two data completion algorithms for the limited-aperture problems in inverse acoustic scattering. Both completion algorithms are independent of the topological and physical properties of the unknown scatterers. The main idea is to relate the limited-aperture data to the full-aperture data via the prolate matrix. The data completion algorithms are simple and fast since only the approximate inversion of the prolate matrix is involved. We then combine the data completion algorithms with imaging methods such as factorization method and direct sampling method for the object reconstructions. A variety of numerical examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed algorithms.

On the spectral asymptotics of waves in periodic media with Dirichlet or Neumann exclusions

We consider homogenization of the scalar wave equation in periodic media at finite wavenumbers and frequencies, with the focus on continua characterized by: (a) arbitrary Bravais lattice in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\!\geqslant\!2$, and (b) exclusions i.e. "voids" that are subject to homogenous (Neumann or Dirichlet) boundary conditions. Making use of the Bloch wave expansion, we pursue this goal via asymptotic ansatz featuring the "spectral distance" from a given wavenumber-eigenfrequency pair (within the first Brillouin zone) as the perturbation parameter. We then introduce the effective wave motion via projection(s) of the scalar wavefield onto the Bloch eigenfunction(s) for the unit cell of periodicity, evaluated at the origin of a spectral neighborhood. For generality, we account for the presence of the source term in the wave equation and we consider -- at a given wavenumber -- generic cases of isolated, repeated, and nearby eigenvalues. In this way we obtain a palette of effective models, featuring both wave- and Dirac-type behaviors, whose applicability is controlled by the local band structure and eigenfunction basis. In all spectral regimes, we pursue the homogenized description up to at least first order of expansion, featuring asymptotic corrections of the homogenized Bloch-wave operator and the homogenized source term. Inherently, such framework provides a convenient platform for the synthesis of a wide range of wave phenomena in metamaterials and phononic crystals. The proposed homogenization framework is illustrated by approximating asymptotically the dispersion relationships for (i) Kagome lattice featuring hexagonal Neumann exclusions, and (ii) "pinned" square lattice with circular Dirichlet exclusions. We complete the numerical portrayal of analytical developments by studying the response of a Kagome lattice due to a dipole-like source term acting near the edge of a band gap.

Factorization method versus migration imaging in a waveguide

We present a comparative study of two qualitative imaging methods in an acoustic waveguide with sound hard walls. The waveguide terminates at one end and contains unknown obstacles of compact support, to be determined from data gathered by an array of sensors that probe the obstacles with waves and measure the scattered response. The first imaging method, known as the factorization method, is based on the factorization of the far field operator. It is designed to image at single frequency and estimates the support of the obstacles by a Picard range criterion. The second imaging method, known as migration, works either with one or multiple frequencies. It forms an image by backpropagating the measured scattered wave to the search points, using the Green's function in the empty waveguide. We study the connection between these methods with analysis and numerical simulations.

Boundary Integral Equations for the Transmission Eigenvalue Problem for Maxwell Equations

In this paper we consider the transmission eigenvalue problem for Maxwell's equations corresponding to non-magnetic inhomogeneities with contrast in electric permittivity that changes sign inside its support. We formulate the transmission eigenvalue problem as an equivalent homogeneous system of boundary integral equation, and assuming that the contrast is constant near the boundary of the support of the inhomogeneity, we prove that the operator associated with this system is Fredholm of index zero and depends analytically on the wave number. Then we show the existence of wave numbers that are not transmission eigenvalues which by an application of the analytic Fredholm theory implies that the set of transmission eigenvalues is discrete with positive infinity as the only accumulation point.
