The International Linear Collider: Report to Snowmass 2021

The International Linear Collider (ILC) is on the table now as a new global energy-frontier accelerator laboratory taking data in the 2030s. The ILC addresses key questions for our current understanding of particle physics. It is based on a proven accelerator technology. Its experiments will challenge the Standard Model of particle physics and will provide a new window to look beyond it. This document brings the story of the ILC up to date, emphasizing its strong physics motivation, its readiness for construction, and the opportunity it presents to the US and the global particle physics community.

Stau study at the ILC and its implication for the muon g-2 anomaly

Once all the sleptons as well as the Bino are observed at the ILC, the Bino contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic dipole moment (muon $g-2$) in supersymmetric (SUSY) models can be reconstructed. Motivated by the recently confirmed muon $g-2$ anomaly, we examine the reconstruction accuracy at the ILC with $\sqrt{s}$ = 500 GeV. For this purpose, measurements of stau parameters are important. We quantitatively study the determination of the mass and mixing parameters of the staus at the ILC. Furthermore, we discuss the implication of the stau study to the reconstruction of the SUSY contribution to the muon $g-2$. At the benchmark point of our choice, we find that the SUSY contribution to the muon $g-2$ can be determined with a precision of $\sim 1\%$ at the ILC.

Strange quark as a probe for new physics in the Higgs sector

This paper describes a novel algorithm for tagging jets originating from the hadronisation of strange quarks (strange-tagging) with the future International Large Detector (ILD) at the International Linear Collider (ILC). It also presents the first application of such a strange-tagger to a Higgs to strange ($h \rightarrow s\bar{s}$) analysis with the $P(e^-,e^+) = (-80\%,+30\%)$ polarisation scenario, corresponding to 900 fb$^{-1}$ of the initial proposed 2000 fb$^{-1}$ of data which will be collected by ILD during its first 10 years of data taking at $\sqrt{s} = 250$ GeV. Upper limits on the Standard Model Higgs-strange coupling strength modifier, $κ_s$, are derived at the 95% confidence level to be 7.14. The paper includes as well a preliminary study of a Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) system capable of discriminating between kaons and pions at high momenta (up to 25 GeV), and thus enhancing strange-tagging performance at future Higgs factory detectors.

ILC Study Questions for Snowmass 2021

To aid contributions to the Snowmass 2021 US Community Study on physics at the International Linear Collider and other proposed $e^+e^-$ colliders, we present a list of study questions that could be the basis of useful Snowmass projects. We accompany this with links to references and resources on $e^+e^-$ physics, and a description of a new software framework that we are preparing for $e^+e^-$ studies at Snowmass.

Prospects of measuring the branching fraction of the Higgs boson decaying into muon pairs at the International Linear Collider

The prospects for measuring the branching fraction of $H \to μ^+ μ^-$ at the International Linear Collider (ILC) have been evaluated based on a full detector simulation of the International Large Detector (ILD) concept, considering centre-of-mass energies ($\sqrt{s}$) of 250 GeV and 500 GeV. For both $\sqrt{s}$ cases, the two final states $e^+ e^- \to q\overline{q}H$ and $e^+ e^- \to ν\overlineνH$ have been analyzed. For integrated luminosities of 2 ab$^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s} = 250$ GeV and 4 ab$^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s} = 500$ GeV, the combined precision on the branching fraction of $H \to μ^+ μ^-$ is estimated to be 17{\%}. The impact of the transverse momentum resolution for this analysis is also studied.

A Time Projection Chamber with GEM-Based Readout

For the International Large Detector concept at the planned International Linear Collider, the use of time projection chambers (TPC) with micro-pattern gas detector readout as the main tracking detector is investigated. In this paper, results from a prototype TPC, placed in a 1 T solenoidal field and read out with three independent GEM-based readout modules, are reported. The TPC was exposed to a 6 GeV electron beam at the DESY II synchrotron. The efficiency for reconstructing hits, the measurement of the drift velocity, the space point resolution and the control of field inhomogeneities are presented.

A study of the measurement precision of the Higgs boson decaying into tau pairs at the ILC

We evaluate the measurement precision of the production cross section times the branching ratio of the Higgs boson decaying into tau lepton pairs at the International Linear Collider (ILC). We analyze various final states associated with the main production mechanisms of the Higgs boson, the Higgs-strahlung and WW-fusion processes. The statistical precision of the production cross section times the branching ratio is estimated to be 2.6% and 6.9% for the Higgs-strahlung andWW-fusion processes, respectively, with the nominal integrated luminosities assumed in the ILC Technical Design Report; the precision improves to 1.0% and 3.4% with the running scenario including possible luminosity upgrades. The study provides a reference performance of the ILC for future phenomenological analyses.

Measuring BR($h \to τ^+ τ^-$) at the ILC: a full simulation study

We evaluate the expected measurement accuracy of the branching ratio of the Standard Model Higgs boson decaying into tau pairs at the ILC with a full simulation of the ILD detector concept. We assume a Higgs mass of 125 GeV, a branching ratio of BR($h \to τ^+ τ^-$) = 6.32%, a beam polarization of electron (positron) of -0.8(+0.3), and an integrated luminosity of 250 fb$^{-1}$. The Higgs-strahlung process $e^+ e^- \to Zh$ with $Z \to q\overline{q}$ is analyzed. We estimate the measurement accuracy of the branching ratio $Δ(σ\times \mathrm{BR}) / (σ\times \mathrm{BR})$ to be 3.4% with using a multivariate analysis technique.

Full Simulation Study of the Higgs Branching Ratio into Tau Lepton Pairs at the ILC with $\sqrt{s} = 500$ GeV

We evaluate the expected measurement accuracy of the branching ratio of the Standard Model Higgs boson decaying into tau lepton pairs $h \to τ^+ τ^-$ at the ILC with a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 500$ GeV with a full simulation of the ILD detector. We assume a Higgs mass of $M_h = 125$ GeV, a branching ratio of $\mathrm{BR}(h \to τ^+ τ^-) = 6.32 \%$, beam polarizations of $P(e^+, e^-) = (-0.8,+0.3)$, and an integrated luminosity of $\int L dt = 500 \mathrm{fb^{-1}}$. The Higgs-strahlung process $e^+ e^- \to Zh$ with $Z \to q \overline{q}$ and the $WW$-fusion process $e^+ e^- \to ν\overlineν h$ are expected to be the most sensitive channels at $\sqrt{s} = 500$ GeV. Using a multivariate analysis technique, we estimate the expected relative measurement accuracy of the branching ratio $Δ(σ\cdot \mathrm{BR}) / (σ\cdot \mathrm{BR})$ to be 4.7% and 7.4% for the $q \overline{q} h$ and $ν\overlineν h$ final states, respectively. The results are cross-checked using a cut-based analysis.

Evaluation of measurement accuracy of $h \to τ^+ τ^-$ branching ratio at the ILC with $\sqrt{s} = 250$ GeV and 500 GeV

We evaluate the measurement accuracy of the branching ratio of $h \to τ^+ τ^-$ at $\sqrt{s} = 250$ GeV and 500 GeV at the ILC with the ILD detector simulation. For the $\sqrt{s} = 250$ GeV, we assume the Higgs mass of $M_h = 120$ GeV, branching ratio of $\mathrm{Br}(h \to τ^+ τ^-) = 8.0 \ %$, beam polarization of $P(e^-, e^+) = (-0.8, +0.3)$, and integrated luminosity of $\int L \ dt = 250 \ \mathrm{fb ^{-1}}$. The Higgs-strahlung process $e^+ e^- \to Zh$ with $Z \to e^+ e^-$, $Z \to μ^+ μ^-$, $Z \to q\bar{q}$ mode are analyzed. The measurement accuracy is calculated to be $Δ(σ\cdot \mathrm{Br}) / (σ\cdot \mathrm{Br}) = 3.5 \ %$. The scaled result to $M_h = 125$ GeV is estimated to be $4.2 \ %$. For the $\sqrt{s} = 500$ GeV, we assume the Higgs mass of $M_h = 125$ GeV, branching ratio of $\mathrm{Br}(h \to τ^+ τ^-) = 6.32 \ %$, beam polarization of $P(e^-, e^+) = (-0.8, +0.3)$, and integrated luminosity of $\int L \ dt = 500 \ \mathrm{fb ^{-1}}$. The Higgs-strahlung process $e^+ e^- \to Zh$ with $Z \to q\bar{q}$ mode and $WW$-fusion process $e^+ e^- \to ν_e \bar{ν_e} h$ are analyzed. The measurement accuracy is calculated to be $Δ(σ\cdot \mathrm{Br}) / (σ\cdot \mathrm{Br}) = 5.7 \ %$ for Higgs-strahlung with $Z \to q\bar{q}$ and $7.5 \ %$ for $WW$-fusion.

A feasibility study of the measurement of Higgs pair creation at a Photon Linear Collider

We studied the feasibility of the measurement of Higgs pair creation at a Photon Linear Collider (PLC). From the sensitivity to the anomalous self-coupling of the Higgs boson, the optimum $γγ$ collision energy was found to be around 270 GeV for a Higgs mass of 120 GeV/$c^2$. We found that large backgrounds such as $γγ\rightarrow W^+W^-, ZZ,$ and $b\bar{b}b\bar{b}$, can be suppressed if correct assignment of tracks to parent partons is achieved and Higgs pair events can be observed with a statistical significance of $\sim 5 σ$ by operating the PLC for 5 years.

Feasibility study of measurement of Higgs pair creation in a gamma gamma collider

We studied the feasibility of measurement of Higgs pair creation in a gamma gamma collider. We found the optimum collision energy is around 270 GeV from the sensitivity study with Higgs boson mass of 120 GeV/c^2. Main backgrounds are gamma gamma to WW, gamma gamma to ZZ, and gamma gamma to bbbb at the optimum collision energy. The preliminary analysis shows HH could be observed with the statistical significance of about 5 sigma when we chose correct assignment of a track by using color singlet information.

A conventional positron source for International Linear Collider

A possible solution to realize a conventional positron source driven by a several-GeV electron beam for the International Linear Collider is proposed. A 300 Hz electron linac is employed to create positrons with stretching pulse length in order to cure target thermal load. ILC requires about 2600 bunches in a train which pulse length is 1 ms. Each pulse of the 300 Hz linac creates about 130 bunches, then 2600 bunches are created in 63 ms. Optimized parameters such as drive beam energy, beam size, and target thickness, are discussed assuming a L-band capture system to maximize the capture efficiency and to mitigate the target thermal load. A slow rotating tungsten disk is employed as positron generation target.
