The International Linear Collider: Report to Snowmass 2021

The International Linear Collider (ILC) is on the table now as a new global energy-frontier accelerator laboratory taking data in the 2030s. The ILC addresses key questions for our current understanding of particle physics. It is based on a proven accelerator technology. Its experiments will challenge the Standard Model of particle physics and will provide a new window to look beyond it. This document brings the story of the ILC up to date, emphasizing its strong physics motivation, its readiness for construction, and the opportunity it presents to the US and the global particle physics community.

Criticality in stochastic SIR model for infectious diseases

We discuss the criticality in the stochastic SIR model for infectious diseases. We adopt the path-integral formalism for the propagation of infections among susceptible, infectious, and removed individuals, and perform the perturbative and nonperturbative analyses to evaluate the critical value of the basic reproduction number ${\cal R}$. In the perturbation theory, we calculate the mean values and the variances of the number of infectious individuals near the initial time, and find that the critical value ${\cal R}_{\text{c}}=1/3$-$2/3$ should be adopted in order to suppress the stochastic spread of infections sufficiently. In the nonperturbative approach, we derive the effective potential by integrating out the stochastic fluctuations, and obtain the effective Euler-Lagrange equations for the time-evolution of the numbers of susceptible, infectious, and removed individuals. From the asymptotic behaviors for a long time, we find that the critical value ${\cal R}_{\text{c}}=2/3$ should be adopted for the sufficient convergence of infections. We also find that the endemic state can be generated dynamically by the stochastic fluctuation which is absent in the conventional SIR model. Those analyses show that the critical value of the basic reproduction number should be less than one, against the usually known critical value ${\cal R}_{\text{c}}=1$, when the stochastic fluctuations are taken into account in the SIR model.

Heavy-quark spin polarization induced by the Kondo effect in a magnetic field

We propose a new mechanism of the heavy-quark spin polarization (HQSP) in quark matter induced by the Kondo effect under external magnetic field. The Kondo effect is caused by a condensate between a heavy and a light quark called the Kondo condensate leading to a mixing of the heavy and light quark spins. Thus the HQSP is driven through the Kondo effect from light quarks coupling with the magnetic field in quark matter. For demonstration, we employ the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio type model under a magnetic field, and investigate the HQSP within the linear response theory with vertex corrections required by the $U(1)_{\rm EM}$ electromagnetic gauge invariance. As a result, we find that the HQSP arises significantly with the appearance of the Kondo effect. Our findings are testable in future sign-problem-free lattice simulations.

Coexistence phase of $^{1}S_{0}$ and $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluids in neutron stars

In neutron star matter, there exist $^{1}S_{0}$ superfluids in lower density in the crust while $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluids are believed to exist at higher density deep inside the core. In the latter, depending on the temperature and magnetic field, either the uniaxial nematic phase, the D$_{2}$-biaxial nematic phase, or the D$_{4}$-biaxial nematic phase appears. In this paper, we discuss a mixture of the $^{1}S_{0}$ and $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluids and find their coexistence. Adopting the loop expansion and the weak-coupling approximation for the interaction between two neutrons, we obtain the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) free energy in which both of the $^{1}S_{0}$ and $^{3}P_{2}$ condensates are taken into account by including the coupling terms between them. We analyze the GL free energy and obtain the phase diagram for the temperature and magnetic field. We find that the $^{1}S_{0}$ superfluid excludes the $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluid completely in the absence of magnetic field, they can coexist for weak magnetic fields, and the $^{1}S_{0}$ superfluid is expelled by the $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluid at strong magnetic fields, thereby proving the robustness of $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluid against the magnetic field. We further show that the D$_{4}$-BN phase covers the whole region of the $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluidity as a result of the coupling term, in contrast to the case of a pure $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluid studied before in which the D$_{4}$-BN phase is realized only under strong magnetic fields. Thus, the D$_{4}$-BN phase is topologically the most interesting phase, e.g., admitting half-quantized non-Abelian vortices relevant not only in magnetars but also in ordinary neutron stars.

Critical endpoint and universality class of neutron $^3P_2$ superfluids in neutron stars

We study the thermodynamics and critical behavior of neutron $^3P_2$ superfluids in the inner cores of neutron stars. $^3P_2$ superfluids offer a rich phase diagram including uniaxial/biaxial nematic phases, the ferromagnetic phase, and the cyclic phase. Using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equation as superfluid Fermi liquid theory, we show that a strong (weak) magnetic field drives the first (second) order transition from the dihedral-two biaxial nematic phase to dihedral-four biaxial nematic phase in low (high) temperatures, and their phase boundaries are divided by the critical endpoint (CEP). We demonstrate that the set of critical exponents at the CEP satisfies the Rushbrooke, Griffiths, and Widom equalities, indicating a new universality class. At the CEP, the $^3P_2$ superfluid exhibits critical behavior with nontrivial critical exponents, indicating a new universality class. Furthermore, we find that the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) equation up to the 8th-order expansion satisfies three equalities and properly captures the physics of the CEP. This implies that the GL theory can provide a tractable way for understanding critical phenomena which may be realized in the dense core of realistic magnetars.

Domain walls in neutron $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluids in neutron stars

We work out domain walls in neutron $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluids realized in the core of neutron stars. Adopting the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory as a bosonic low-energy effective theory, we consider configurations of domain walls interpolating ground states, i.e., the uniaxial nematic (UN), D$_{2}$-biaxial nematic (D$_{2}$-BN), and D$_{4}$-biaxial nematic (D$_{4}$-BN) phases in the presence of zero, small and large magnetic fields, respectively. We solve the Euler-Lagrange equation from the GL free energy density, and calculate surface energy densities of the domain walls. We find that one extra Nambu-Goldstone mode is localized in the vicinity of a domain wall in the UN phase while a U(1) symmetry restores in the vicinity of one type of domain wall in the D$_{2}$-BN phase and all domain walls in the D$_{4}$-BN phase. Considering a pile of domain walls in the neutron stars, we find that the most stable configurations are domain walls perpendicular to the magnetic fields piled up in the direction along the magnetic fields in the D$_{2}$-BN and D$_{4}$-BN phases. We estimate the energy released from the deconstruction of the domain walls in the edge of a neutron star, and show that it can reach an astrophysical scale such as glitches in neutron stars.

Kondo effect driven by chirality imbalance

We propose a novel mechanism of the Kondo effect driven by a chirality imbalance (or chiral chemical potential) of relativistic light fermions. This effect is realized by the mixing between a right- or left-handed fermion and a heavy impurity in the chirality imbalanced matter even at zero density. This is different from the usual Kondo effect induced by finite density. We derive the Kondo effect from both a perturbative calculation and a mean-field approach. We also discuss the temperature dependence of the Kondo effect. The Kondo effect at nonzero chiral chemical potential can be tested by future lattice simulations.

QCD Kondo excitons

The quantum chromodynamics (QCD) Kondo effect is a quantum phenomenon in which heavy quarks ($c$, $b$) exist as impurity particles in quark matter composed of light quarks ($u$, $d$, $s$) at extremely high density. This is analogous to the famous Kondo effect in condensed matter physics. In the present paper, we show theoretically the existence of the "QCD Kondo excitons", i.e., the bound states of light quarks and heavy quarks, as the lowest-excitation modes above the ground state of the quark matter governed by the QCD Kondo effect. These are neutral for color and electric charges, similarly to the Kondo excitons in condensed matter, and they are new type of quasiparticles absent in the normal phase of quark matter. The QCD Kondo excitons have various masses and quantum numbers, i.e., flavors and spin parities (scalar, pseudoscalar, vector, and axialvector). The QCD Kondo excitons lead to the emergence of the neutral currents in transport phenomena, which are measurable in lattice QCD simulations. The study of the QCD Kondo excitons will provide us with understanding of new universal properties shared by quark matter and condensed matter.

Topological defects at the boundary of neutron $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluids in neutron stars

We study surface effects of neutron $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluids in neutron stars. $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluids are in uniaxial nematic (UN), D$_{2}$ biaxial nematic (BN), or D$_{4}$ BN phase, depending on the strength of magnetic fields from small to large. We suppose a neutron $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluid in a ball with a spherical boundary. Adopting a suitable boundary condition for $^{3}P_{2}$ condensates, we solve the Ginzburg-Landau equation to find several surface properties for the neutron $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluid. First, the phase on the surface can be different from that of the bulk, and symmetry restoration or breaking occurs in general on the surface. Second, the distribution of the surface energy density has an anisotropy depending on the polar angle in the sphere, which may lead to the deformation of the geometrical shape of the surface. Third, the order parameter manifold induced on the surface, which is described by two-dimensional vector fields induced on the surface from the condensates, allows topological defects (vortices) on the surface, and there must exist such defects even in the ground state thanks to the Poincaré-Hopf theorem: although the numbers of the vortices and antivortices depend on the bulk phases, the difference between them is topologically invariant (the Euler number $χ=2$) irrespective of the bulk phases. These vortices, which are not extended to the bulk, are called boojums in the context of liquid crystals and helium-3 superfluids. The surface properties of the neutron $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluid found in this paper may provide us useful information to study neutron stars.

Effects of strong magnetic fields on neutron $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluidity with spin-orbit interactions

We discuss neutron $^{3}P_{2}$ phases in the core of neutron stars in strong magnetic field (magnetars). The neutron $^{3}P_{2}$ pairing provides a wide variety of condensates, such as the uniaxial nematic and (D$_{2}$ and D$_{4}$) biaxial nematic, with different symmetries stemming from the combinations of spin and momentum. Based on the spin-orbital angular momentum coupling and the spin-magnetic field coupling of the neutrons, we derive the Ginzburg-Landau equation containing higher order terms of the magnetic field. We investigate the phase diagram of the neutron $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluidity, and find that the D$_{2}$ biaxial nematic phase is extended by the higher order terms of the magnetic field. We also discuss the thermodynamic properties, the heat capacity and the spin susceptibility.

Quark-Hadron Crossover with Vortices

The quark-hadron crossover conjecture was proposed as a continuity between hadronic matter and quark matter with no phase transition. It is based on matching of symmetry and excitations in both the phases. It connects hyperon matter and color-flavor locked (CFL) phase of color superconductivity in the limit of light strange quark mass. We study generalization of this conjecture in the presence of topological vortices. We propose a picture where hadronic superfluid vortices in hyperon matter could be connected to non-Abelian vortices (color magnetic flux tubes) in the CFL phase during this crossover. We propose that three hadronic superfluid vortices must join together to three non-Abelian vortices with different color fluxes with the total color magnetic fluxes canceled out, where the junction is called a colorful boojum.

Compositeness of baryonic resonances: Applications to the Delta(1232), N(1535), and N(1650) resonances

We present a formulation of the compositeness for baryonic resonances in order to discuss the meson-baryon molecular structure inside the resonances. For this purpose, we derive a relation between the residue of the scattering amplitude at the resonance pole position and the two-body wave function of the resonance in a sophisticated way, and we define the compositeness as the norm of the two-body wave functions. As applications, we investigate the compositeness of the $Δ(1232)$, $N (1535)$, and $N (1650)$ resonances from precise $πN$ scattering amplitudes in a unitarized chiral framework with the interaction up to the next-to-leading order in chiral perturbation theory. The $πN$ compositeness for the $Δ(1232)$ resonance is evaluated in the $πN$ single-channel scattering, and we find that the $πN$ component inside $Δ(1232)$ in the present framework is nonnegligible, which supports the previous work. On the other hand, the compositeness for the $N (1535)$ and $N (1650)$ resonances is evaluated in a coupled-channels approach, resulting that the $πN$, $ηN$, $K Λ$ and $K Σ$ components are negligible for these resonances.

Kondo effect in charm/bottom nuclei

We discuss the Kondo effect for isospin-exchange interaction between a $\bar{D}$, $B$ meson and a valence nucleon in charm/bottom atomic nuclei including the discrete energy-levels for valence nucleons. To investigate the binding energy by the Kondo effect, we introduce the mean-field approach for the bound state of the $\bar{D}$, $B$ meson in charm/bottom nuclei. Assuming a simple model, we examine the validity of the mean-field approximation by comparing the results with the exact solutions. We also estimate the effect of the quantum fluctuation beyond the mean-field approximation. We discuss the competition between the Kondo effect and the other correlations in valence nucleon, the isospin symmetry breaking and the nucleon pairings.

Compositeness of the Delta(1232) resonance in pi N scattering

We evaluate the $πN$ compositeness of the $Δ(1232)$ resonance so as to clarify the internal structure of $Δ(1232)$ in terms of the $πN$ component. Here the compositeness is defined as contributions from two-body wave functions to the normalization of the total wave function and is extracted from the $πN$ scattering amplitude. In this study we employ the chiral unitary approach with the interaction up to the next-to-leading order plus a bare $Δ$ term in chiral perturbation theory and describe $Δ(1232)$ in an elastic $πN$ scattering. Fitting the $πN$ scattering amplitude to the solution of the partial wave analysis, we obtain a large real part of the $πN$ compositeness for $Δ(1232)$ comparable to unity and non-negligible imaginary part as well, with which we reconfirm the result in the previous study on the $πN$ compositeness for $Δ(1232)$.

QCD Kondo effect: quark matter with heavy-flavor impurities

We show that the Kondo effect occurs in light quark matter which contains heavy quarks as impurities. We consider a scattering between a heavy-flavor impurity and a light quark near a Fermi surface which is mediated by gluon-exchange interactions. We find that the scattering amplitude has a logarithmic infrared divergence originating from imperfect cancellation between quark-impurity and hole-impurity scatterings in a loop integral, implying the presence of a strongly coupled regime near the Fermi surface. Renormalization group method is used to find the Kondo scale where a running coupling constant hits a Landau pole. Following an illustration by a simple contact-interaction model, we examine gluon-exchange interactions on the basis of high density QCD.

Vortices and Other Topological Solitons in Dense Quark Matter

In this review, we discuss various properties of topological solitons in dense QCD matter, with a particular emphasis on the CFL phase exhibiting superfluidity and superconductivity, and their phenomenological implications in terms of the effective field theories such as the Ginzburg-Landau theory, the chiral Lagrangian, or the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equation. The most fundamental topological excitations are non-Abelian vortices, which are 1/3 quantized superfluid vortices and color magnetic flux tubes. They are created at a phase transition or a rotation such compact stars. The intervortex-interaction is repulsive and consequently a vortex lattice is formed. Bosonic and fermionic zero-energy modes are trapped in the vortex core and propagate along it as gapless excitations. The former consists of translational zero modes (a Kelvin mode) with a quadratic dispersion and CP(2) Nambu-Goldstone gapless modes with a linear dispersion, while the latter is the triplet Majorana fermion zero modes. The low-energy effective theory of the bosonic zero modes is a non-relativistic free complex scalar field and a CP(2) model in 1+1 dimensions. The effects of strange quark mass, electromagnetic interactions and non-perturbative quantum corrections are taken into account. Colorful boojums at the CFL interface, quantum color magnetic monopole confined by vortices, which supports the notion of quark-hadron duality, and Yang-Mills instantons inside a vortex as lumps are discussed. The interactions between a vortex and quasi-particles such as phonons, gluons, mesons, and photons are studied. A vortex lattice is shown to behave as a cosmic polarizer. Non-Abelian vortices are shown to behave as a novel kind of non-Abelian anyons. For the chiral symmetry breaking, we discuss fractional and integer axial domain walls, Abelian and non-Abelian axial vortices, axial wall-vortex composites, and Skyrmions.

Decays of Zb -> Upsilon + pi via triangle diagrams in heavy meson molecules

Bottomonium-like resonances Zb(10610) and Zb'(10650) are good candidates of hadronic molecules composed of BBbar* (or B*Bbar) and B*Bbar*, respectively. Considering Zb (Zb') as heavy meson molecules, we investigate the decays of Zb(')^+ -> Upsilon (nS) pi^+$ in terms of the heavy meson effective theory. We find that the intermediate B (B*) and Bbar (Bbar*) meson loops and the form factors play a significant role to reproduce the experimental values of the decay widths. We also predict the decay widths of Zc^+ -> J/ψpi^+ and psi(2S) pi^+ for a charmonium-like resonance Zc which has been reported recently in experiments.

Non-Abelian statistics of vortices with non-Abelian Dirac fermions

We extend our previous analysis on the exchange statistics of vortices having a single Dirac fermion trapped in each core, to the case where vortices trap two Dirac fermions with U(2) symmetry. Such a system of vortices with non-Abelian Dirac fermions appears in color superconductors at extremely high densities, and in supersymmetric QCD. We show that the exchange of two vortices having doublet Dirac fermions in each core is expressed by non-Abelian representations of a braid group, which is explicitly verified in the matrix representation of the exchange operators when the number of vortices is up to four. We find that the result contains the matrices previously obtained for the vortices with a single Dirac fermion in each core as a special case. The whole braid group does not immediately imply non-Abelian statistics of identical particles because it also contains exchanges between vortices with different numbers of Dirac fermions. However, we find that it does contain, as its subgroup, a genuine non-Abelian statistics for the exchange of the identical particles, that is, vortices with the same number of Dirac fermions. This result is surprising compared with conventional understanding because all Dirac fermions are defined locally at each vortex, unlike the case of Majorana fermions for which Dirac fermions are defined non-locally by Majorana fermions located at two spatially separated vortices.

Production of doubly charmed tetraquarks with exotic color configurations in electron-positron collisions

Structure and production of doubly charmed tetraquarks T_cc (cc ubar dbar) are studied from the viewpoint of color configurations. Based on the diquark correlation, the tetraquark T_cc with I(JP)=0(1+) is considered to be stable against strong decay. We discuss that the mixing probability of color antitriplet and sextet cc components in T_cc is suppressed by 1/m_c^2, so the two configurations are separately realized in the heavy quark limit. Utilizing the nonrelativistic QCD framework, we evaluate the production cross sections of T_cc in electron-positron collisions. The momentum dependence of the cross section of color antitriplet is found to be different from that of sextet, which can be used to discriminate the color structure of the T_cc states in experimental measurements.

Decays and productions via bottomonium for Z_b resonances and other B anti-B molecules

We discuss decays and productions for the possible molecular states formed by bottom mesons B (B*) and anti-B (anti-B*). The twin resonances found by Belle, Zb(10610) and Zb(10650), are such candidates. The spin wave functions of the molecular states are rearranged into those of heavy and light spin degrees of freedom by using the re-coupling formulae of angular momentum. By applying the heavy quark symmetry we derive model independent relations among various decay and production rates, which can be tested in experiments.

Dirac returns: non-Abelian statistics of vortices with Dirac fermions

Topological superconductors classified as type D admit zero-energy Majorana fermions inside vortex cores, and consequently the exchange statistics of vortices becomes non-Abelian, giving a promising example of non-Abelian anyons. On the other hand, types C and DIII admit zero-energy Dirac fermions inside vortex cores. It has been long believed that an essential condition for the realization of non-Abelian statistics is non-locality of Dirac fermions made of two Majorana fermions trapped inside two well-separated vortices as in the case of type D. Contrary to this conventional wisdom, however, we show that vortices with local Dirac fermions also obey non-Abelian statistics.

Exotic mesons with double charm and bottom flavor

We study exotic mesons with double charm and bottom flavor, whose quark configuration is \bar{Q}\bar{Q}qq. This quark configuration has no annihilation process of quark and antiquark, and hence is a genuinely exotic states. We take a hadronic picture by considering the molecular states composed of a pair of heavy mesons, such as DD, DD* and D*D* for charm flavor, and BB, BB* and B*B* for bottom flavor. The interactions between heavy mesons are derived from the heavy quark effective theory. All molecular states are classified by I(J^P) quantum numbers, and are systematically studied up to the total angular momentum J \leq 2. By solving the coupled channel Schrodinger equations, due to the strong tensor force of one pion exchanging, we find bound and/or resonant states of various quantum numbers.

Exotic mesons with hidden bottom near thresholds

We study heavy hadron spectroscopy near open bottom thresholds. We employ B and B* mesons as effective degrees of freedom near the thresholds, and consider meson exchange potentials between them. All possible composite states which can be constructed from the B and B* mesons are studied up to the total angular momentum J = 0, 1, 2. We consider, as exotic states, isosinglet states with exotic (J,PC) quantum numbers and isotriplet states. We solve numerically the Schrodinger equation with channel-couplings for each state. The masses of twin resonances Zb(10608) and Zb(10653) recently found by Belle are reproduced. We predict several possible bound and/or resonant states in other channels for future experiments.

Non-Abelian statistics of vortices with multiple Majorana fermions

We consider the exchange statistics of vortices, each of which traps an odd number ($N$) of Majorana fermions. We assume that the fermions in a vortex transform in the vector representation of the SO(N) group. Exchange of two vortices turns out to be non-Abelian, and the corresponding operator is further decomposed into two parts: a part that is essentially equivalent to the exchange operator of vortices having a single Majorana fermion in each vortex, and a part representing the Coxeter group. Similar decomposition was already found in the case with N=3, and the result shown here is a generalization to the case with an arbitrary odd $N$. We can obtain the matrix representation of the exchange operators in the Hilbert space that is constructed by using Dirac fermions non-locally defined by Majorana fermions trapped in separated vortices. We also show that the decomposition of the exchange operator implies tensor product structure in its matrix representation.

Exotic baryons from a heavy meson and a nucleon -- Negative parity states --

We study heavy baryons with an exotic flavor quantum number formed by a heavy meson and a nucleon (Dbar-N and B-N) through a long range one pion exchange interaction. The bound state found previously in the (I,JP) =(0,1/2-) channel survives when short range interaction is included. In addition, we find a resonant state with (I,JP)=(0,3/2-) as a Feshbach resonance predominated by a heavy vector meson and a nucleon (Dbar*-N and B*-N). We find that these exotic states exist for the charm and heavier flavor region.

Exotics from Heavy Ion Collisions

Discriminating hadronic molecular and multi-quark states is a long standing problem in hadronic physics. We propose here to utilize relativistic heavy ion collisions to resolve this problem, as exotic hadron yields are expected to be strongly affected by their structures. Using the coalescence model, we find that the exotic hadron yield relative to the statistical model result is typically an order of magnitude smaller for a compact multi-quark state, and larger by a factor of two or more for a loosely bound hadronic molecule. We further find that some of the newly proposed heavy exotic states could be produced and realistically measured at RHIC and LHC.

Hadron resonances with coexistence of different natures

We discuss coexistence/mixing of different natures of hadronic composite (molecule) and elementary (quark-intrinsic) ones in hadron resonances. The discussions here are based on our previous publications on the origin of hadron resonances \cite{Hyodo:2008xr}, exotic $\bar D$ meson-nucleons as hadronic composites containing one anti-heavy quark \cite{Yamaguchi:2011xb}, and the study of $a_1$ as a typical example to show explicitly the mixing of the two different natures \cite{Nagahiro:2011jn}. In all cases, interactions are derived from the chiral dynamics of the light flavor sector. These interactions generate in various cases hadronic composite/molecule states, serving varieties of structure beyond the conventional quark model.

Index theorem and Majorana zero modes along a non-Abelian vortex in a color superconductor

Color superconductivity in high density QCD exhibits the color-flavor locked (CFL) phase. To explore zero modes in the CFL phase in the presence of a non-Abelian vortex with an SU(2) symmetry in the vortex core, we apply the index theorem to the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) Hamiltonian. From the calculation of the topological index, we find that triplet, doublet and singlet sectors of SU(2) have certain number of chiral Majorana zero modes in the limit of vanishing chemical potential. We also solve the BdG equation by the use of the series expansion to show that the number of zero modes and their chirality match the result of the index theorem. From particle-hole symmetry of the BdG Hamiltonian, we conclude that if and only if the index of a given sector is odd, one zero mode survives generically for a finite chemical potential. We argue that this result should hold nonperturbatively even in the high density limit.

Majorana meets Coxeter: Non-Abelian Majorana Fermions and Non-Abelian Statistics

We discuss statistics of vortices having zero-energy non-Abelian Majorana fermions inside them. Considering the system of multiple non-Abelian vortices, we derive a non-Abelian statistics that differs from the previously derived non-Abelian statistics. The new non-Abelian statistics presented here is given by a tensor product of two different groups, namely the non-Abelian statistics obeyed by the Abelian Majorana fermions and the Coxeter group. The Coxeter group is a symmetric group related to the symmetry of polytopes in a high-dimensional space. As the simplest example, we consider the case in which a vortex contains three Majorana fermions that are mixed with each other under the SO(3) transformations. We concretely present the representation of the Coxeter group in our case and its geometrical expressions in the high-dimensional Hilbert space constructed from non-Abelian Majorana fermions.

Multi-quark hadrons from Heavy Ion Collisions

Identifying hadronic molecular states and/or hadrons with multi-quark components either with or without exotic quantum numbers is a long standing challenge in hadronic physics. We suggest that studying the production of these hadrons in relativistic heavy ion collisions offer a promising resolution to this problem as yields of exotic hadrons are expected to be strongly affected by their structures. Using the coalescence model for hadron production, we find that compared to the case of a non-exotic hadron with normal quark numbers, the yield of an exotic hadron is typically an order of magnitude smaller when it is a compact multi-quark state and a factor of two or more larger when it is a loosely bound hadronic molecule. We further find that due to the appreciable numbers of charm and bottom quarks produced in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and even larger numbers expected at LHC, some of the newly proposed heavy exotic states could be produced and realistically measured in these experiments.

Studying Exotic Hadrons in Heavy Ion Collisions

We investigate the possibilities of using measurements in present and future experiments on heavy ion collisions to answer some longstanding problems in hadronic physics, namely identifying hadronic molecular states and exotic hadrons with multiquark components. The yields of a selected set of exotic hadron candidates in relativistic heavy ion collisions are discussed in the coalescence model in comparison with the statistical model. We find that the yield of a hadron is typically an order of magnitude smaller when it is a compact multiquark state, compared to that of an excited hadronic state with normal quark numbers. We also find that some loosely bound hadronic molecules are formed more abundantly than the statistical model prediction by a factor of two or more. Moreover, due to the significant numbers of charm and bottom quarks produced at RHIC and even larger numbers expected at LHC, some of the proposed heavy exotic hadrons could be produced with sufficient abundance for detection, making it possible to study these new exotic hadrons in heavy ion collisions.

Fermion structure of non-Abelian vortices in high density QCD

We study the internal structure of a non-Abelian vortex in color superconductivity with respect to quark degrees of freedom. Stable non-Abelian vortices appear in the Color-Flavor-Locked phase whose symmetry SU(3)_{c+L+R} is further broken to SU(2)_{c+L+R} x U(1)_{c+L+R} at the vortex cores. Microscopic structure of vortices at scales shorter than the coherence length can be analyzed by the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (B-dG) equation (rather than the Ginzburg-Landau equation). We obtain quark spectra from the B-dG equation by treating the diquark gap having the vortex configuration as a background field. We find that there are massless modes (zero modes) well-localized around a vortex, in the triplet and singlet states of the unbroken symmetry SU(2)_{c+L+R} x U(1)_{c+L+R}. The velocities v_i of the massless modes (i=t,s for triplet and singlet) change at finite chemical potential μ, and decrease as μbecomes large. Therefore, low energy excitations in the vicinity of the vortices are effectively described by 1+1 dimensional massless fermions whose velocities are reduced v_i<1.
