Global Spherically Symmetric Solutions of the Multidimensional Full Compressible Navier-Stokes Equations with Large Data

We establish the global-in-time existence of solutions of the Cauchy problem for the full Navier-Stokes equations for compressible heat-conducting flow in multidimensions with initial data that are large, discontinuous, spherically symmetric, and away from the vacuum. The solutions obtained here are of global finite total relative-energy including the origin, while cavitation may occur as balls centred at the origin of symmetry for which the interfaces between the fluid and the vacuum must be upper semi-continuous in space-time in the Eulerian coordinates. On any region strictly away from the possible vacuum, the velocity and specific internal energy are Hölder continuous, and the density has a uniform upper bound. To achieve these, our main strategy is to regard the Cauchy problem as the limit of a series of carefully designed initial-boundary value problems that are formulated in finite annular regions. For such approximation problems, we can derive uniform {\it a-priori} estimates that are independent of both the inner and outer radii of the annuli considered in the spherically symmetric Lagrangian coordinates. The entropy inequality is recovered after taking the limit of the outer radius to infinity by using Mazur's lemma and the convexity of the entropy function, which is required for the limit of the inner radius tending to zero. Then the global weak solutions of the original problem are attained via careful compactness arguments applied to the approximate solutions in the Eulerian coordinates.

Global spherically symmetric solutions to degenerate compressible Navier-Stokes equations with large data and far field vacuum

We consider the initial-boundary value problem (IBVP) for the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations (\textbf{CNS}) in the domain exterior to a ball in $\mathbb R^d$ $(d=2\ \text{or} \ 3)$. When viscosity coefficients are given as a constant multiple of the mass density $ρ$, based on some analysis of the nonlinear structure of this system, we prove the global existence of the unique spherically symmetric classical solution for (large) initial data with spherical symmetry and far field vacuum in some inhomogeneous Sobolev spaces. Moreover, the solutions we obtained have the conserved total mass and finite total energy. $ρ$ keeps positive in the domain considered but decays to zero in the far field, which is consistent with the facts that the total mass is conserved, and \textbf{CNS} is a model of non-dilute fluids where $ρ$ is bounded away from the vacuum. To prove the existence, on the one hand, we consider a well-designed reformulated structure by introducing some new variables, which, actually, can transfer the degeneracies of the time evolution and the viscosity to the possible singularity of some special source terms. On the other hand, it is observed that, for the spherically symmetric flow, the radial projection of the so-called effective velocity $\boldsymbol{v} =U+\nabla φ(ρ)$ ($U$ is the velocity of the fluid, and $φ(ρ)$ is a function of $ρ$ defined via the shear viscosity coefficient $μ(ρ)$: $φ'(ρ)=2μ(ρ)/ρ^2$), verifies a damped transport equation which provides the possibility to obtain its upper bound. Then combined with the BD entropy estimates, one can obtain the required uniform a priori estimates of the solution. It is worth pointing out that the frame work on the well-posedness theory established here can be applied to the shallow water equations.

On regular solutions for three-dimensional full compressible Navier-Stokes equations with degenerate viscosities and far field vacuum

In this paper, the Cauchy problem for the three-dimensional (3-D) full compressible Navier-Stokes equations (CNS) with zero thermal conductivity is considered. First, when shear and bulk viscosity coefficients both depend on the absolute temperature $θ$ in a power law ($θ^ν$ with $ν>0$) of Chapman-Enskog, based on some elaborate analysis of this system's intrinsic singular structures, we identify one class of initial data admitting a local-in-time regular solution with far field vacuum in terms of the mass density $ρ$, velocity $u$ and entropy $S$. Furthermore, it is shown that within its life span of such a regular solution, the velocity stays in an inhomogeneous Sobolev space, i.e., $u\in H^3(\mathbb{R}^3)$, $S$ has uniformly finite lower and upper bounds in the whole space, and the laws of conservation of total mass, momentum and total energy are all satisfied. Note that due to the appearance of the vacuum, the momentum equations are degenerate both in the time evolution and viscous stress tensor, and the physical entropy for polytropic gases behaves singularly, which make the study on corresponding well-posedness challenging. For proving the existence, we first introduce an enlarged reformulated structure by considering some new variables, which can transfer the degeneracies of the full CNS to the possible singularities of some special source terms related with $S$, and then carry out some singularly weighted energy estimates carefully designed for this reformulated system.

Global mild solutions to three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic system in Morrey spaces

In this article, the Cauchy problem of three-dimensional (3-D) incompressible magnetohydrodynamic system was investigated. If the initial $\mathcal{M}^{1,1}$ norms of the vorticity $ω$ and the current density $j$ are both sufficiently small, then some uniform estimates with respect to time for the coupling terms between the fluid and the magnetic field can be established, which lead to a global-in-time well-posedness of mild solutions in Morrey spaces via some effective arguments.

Global Solutions of a Two-Dimensional Riemann Problem for the Pressure Gradient System

We are concerned with a two-dimensional ($2$-D) Riemann problem for compressible flows modeled by the pressure gradient system that is a $2$-D hyperbolic system of conservation laws. The Riemann initial data consist of four constant states in four sectorial regions such that two shock waves and two vortex sheets are generated between the adjacent states. This Riemann problem can be reduced to a boundary value problem in the self-similar coordinates with the Riemann initial data as its asymptotic boundary data, along with two sonic circles determined by the Riemann initial data, for a nonlinear system of mixed-composite type. The solutions keep the four constant states and four planar waves outside the outer sonic circle. The two shocks keep planar until they meet the outer sonic circle at two different points and then generate a diffracted shock to be expected to connect these two points, whose exact location is {\it apriori} unknown which is regarded as a free boundary. Then the $2$-D Riemann problem can be reformulated as a free boundary problem, in which the diffracted transonic shock is the one-phase free boundary to connect the two points, while the other part of the outer sonic circle forms the part of the fixed boundary of the problem. We establish the global existence of a solution of the free boundary problem, as well as the $C^{0,1}$--regularity of both the diffracted shock across the two points and the solution across the outer sonic boundary which is optimal. One of the key observations here is that the diffracted transonic shock can not intersect with the inner sonic circle in the self-similar coordinates. As a result, this $2$-D Riemann problem is solved globally, whose solution contains two vortex sheets and one global $2$-D shock connecting the two original shocks generated by the Riemann data.

Singularity formation for compressible Euler equations

It is well-known that shock will form in finite time for hyperbolic conservation laws from initial nonlinear compression no matter how small and smooth the data are. Classical results, including Lax [14], Liu [22], Li-Zhou-Kong [16], confirm that when initial data are small smooth perturbations near constant states, blowup in gradient of solutions occurs in finite time if and only if intial data contain any compression in some truly nonlinear characteristic field. A natural puzzle is that: Will this picture keep true for large data problem of physical systems such as compressible Euler equations? One of the key issues is how to find an effective way to obtain sharp enough control on density lower bound. For isentropic flow, we offer a complete picture on the finite time shock formation from smooth initial data away from vacuum, which is consistent with small data theory. For adiabatic flow, we show a striking observation that initial weak compressions do not necessarily develop singularity in finite time, in a sharp contrast to the small data theory. Furthermore, we find the critical strength of nonlinear compression, and prove that if the compression is stronger than this critical value, then singularity develops in finite time, and otherwise there are a class of initial data admitting global smooth solutions with maximum strength of compression equals to this critical value.

Existence results for viscous polytropic fluids with degenerate viscosities and far field vacuum

In this paper, we considered the isentropic Navier-Stokes equations for compressible fluids with density-dependent viscosities in $\mathbb{R}^3$. These systems come from the Boltzmann equations through the Chapman-Enskog expansion to the second order, cf.\cite{tlt}, and are degenerate when vacuum appears. We firstly establish the existence of the unique local regular solution (see Definition \ref{d1} or \cite{sz3}) when the initial data are arbitrarily large with vacuum at least appearing in the far field. Moreover it is interesting to show that we could't obtain any global regular solution that the $L^\infty$ norm of $u$ decays to zero as time $t$ goes to infinity.

No BV bounds for approximate solutions to p-system with general pressure law

For the p-system with large BV initial data, an assumption introduced in [3] by Bakhvalov guarantees the global existence of entropy weak solutions with uniformly bounded total variation. The present paper provides a partial converse to this result. Whenever Bakhvalov's condition does not hold, we show that there exist front tracking approximate solutions, with uniformly positive density, whose total variation becomes arbitrarily large. The construction extends the arguments in [4] to a general class of pressure laws.

On classical solutions for viscous polytropic fluids with degenerate viscosities and vacuum

In this paper, we consider the three-dimensional isentropic Navier-Stokes equations for compressible fluids with viscosities depending on density in a power law and allowing initial vacuum. We introduce the notion of regular solutions and prove the local-in-time well-posedness of solutions with arbitrarily large initial data and vacuum in this class, which is a long-standing open problem due to the very high degeneracy caused by vacuum. Moreover, for certain classes of initial data with local vacuum, we show that the regular solution that we obtained will break down in finite time, no matter how small and smooth the initial data are.

On classical solutions to 2D Shallow water equations with degenerate viscosities

In this paper, the $2$-D isentropic Navier-Stokes systems for compressible fluids with density-dependent viscosity coefficients are considered. In particular, we assume that the viscosity coefficients are proportional to density. These equations, including several models in $2$-D shallow water theory, are degenerate when vacuum appears. We introduce the notion of regular solutions and prove the local existence of solutions in this class allowing the initial vacuum in the far field. This solution is further shown to be stable with respect to initial data in $H^2$ sense. A Beal-Kato-Majda type blow-up criterion is also established.

Blow-up criterion for the compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with vacuum

In this paper, the 3-D compressible MHD equations with initial vacuum or infinity electric conductivity is considered. We prove that the $L^\infty$ norms of the deformation tensor $D(u)$ and the absolute temperature $θ$ control the possible blow-up (see [5][18][20]) for strong solutions, which means that if a solution of the compressible MHD equations is initially regular and loses its regularity at some later time, then the formation of singularity must be caused by losing the bound of $D(u)$ and $θ$ as the critical time approaches. The viscosity coefficients are only restricted by the physical conditions. Our criterion (see (\ref{eq:2.911})) is similar to [17] for $3$-D incompressible Euler equations, [10] for $3$-D compressible isentropic Navier-stokes equations and [22]for $3$-D compressible isentropic MHD equations.

Existence results and blow-up criterion of compressible radiation hydrodynamic equations

In this paper, we consider the $3$D compressible radiation hydrodynamic (RHD) equations with thermal conductivity in a bounded domain. The existence of unique local strong solutions is firstly established when the initial data are arbitrarily large and satisfy some initial layer compatibility condition. The initial mass density needs not be bounded away from zero and may vanish in some open set. Moreover, we show that if the initial vacuum domain is not so irregular, then the compatibility condition is necessary and sufficient to guarantee the existence of the unique strong solution. Finally, we show a Beal-Kato-Majda type blow-up criterion in terms of $(\nabla I,ρ,θ)$.

Existence results for compressible radiation hydrodynamics equations with vacuum

In this paper, we consider the 3-D compressible isentropic radiation hydrodynamics (RHD) equations. The local existence of strong solutions with vacuum is firstly established when the initial data is arbitrarily large, contains vacuum and satisfy some initial layer compatibility condition. The initial mass density needs not be bounded away from zero, it may vanish in some open set or decay at infinity. We also prove that if the initial vacuum is not so irregular, then the compatibility condition of the initial data is necessary and sufficient to guarantee the existence of a unique strong solution. Finally, we prove a blow-up criterion for the local strong solution. The similar result also holds for the general barotropic flow with pressure law $p_m=p_m(ρ)\in C^1(\mathbb{\overline{R}}^+)$.

Formation of singularities in solutions to the compressible radiation hydrodynamics equations with vacuum

We study the Cauchy problem for multi-dimensional compressible radiation hydrodynamics equations with vacuum. First, we present some sufficient conditions on the blow-up of smooth solutions in multi-dimensional space. Then, we obtain the invariance of the support of density for the smooth solutions with compactly supported initial mass density by the property of the system under the vacuum state. Based on the above-mentioned results, we prove that we cannot get a global classical solution, no matter how small the initial data are, as long as the initial mass density is of compact support. Finally, we will see that some of the results that we obtained are still valid for the isentropic flows with degenerate viscosity coefficients as well as 1-D case.

Lower bound of density for Lipschitz continuous solutions in the isentropic gas dynamics

For the Euler equations of isentropic gas dynamics in one space dimension, also knowns as p-system in Lagrangian coordinate, it is known that the density can be arbitrarily close to zero as time goes to infinity, even when initial density is uniformly away from zero. In this paper, for uniform positive initial density, we prove the density in any Lipschitz continuous solutions for Cauchy problem has a sharp positive lower bound in the order of O(1/(1+t)), which is identified by explicit examples in [9](Courant and Friedrichs, Supersonic Flow and Shock Waves, 1948.).

On classical solutions of the compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with vacuum

In this paper, we consider the 3-D compressible isentropic MHD equations with infinity electric conductivity. The existence of unique local classical solutions is firstly established when the initial data is arbitrarily large, contains vacuum and satisfies some initial layer compatibility condition. The initial mass density needs not be bounded away from zero and may vanish in some open set. Moreover, we prove that the $L^\infty$ norm of the deformation tensor of velocity gradients controls the possible blow-up (see \cite{olga}\cite{zx}) for classical (or strong) solutions, which means that if a solution of the compressible MHD equations is initially regular and loses its regularity at some later time, then the formation of singularity must be caused by the losing the bound of the deformtion tensor as the critical time approches. Our result (see (1.12) is the same as Ponce's criterion for $3$-D incompressible Euler equations \cite{pc} and Huang-Li-Xin's blow-up criterion for the $3$-D compressible Navier-stokes equations \cite{hup}.

On regular solutions of the 3-D compressible isentropic Euler-Boltzmann equations with vacuum

In this paper, we discuss the Cauchy Problem for the compressible isentropic Euler-Boltzmann equations with vacuum in radiation hydrodynamics. Firstly, we establish the local existence of regular solutions by the fundamental methods in the theory of quasi-linear symmetric hyperbolic systems under some physical assumptions. Then we give the non-global existence of regular solutions caused by the effect of vacuum for $1<γ\leq 3$. Finally, we extend our result to the initial-boundary value problem under some suitable boundary conditions. These blow-up results tell us that the radiation cannot prevent the formation of singularities caused by the appearance of vacuum.
