Shalika germs for sl(n) and sp(2n) are motivic

We prove that Shalika germs on the Lie algebras sl(n) and sp(2n) belong to the class of so-called `motivic functions' defined by means of a first-order language of logic. We also prove, for these Lie algebras, a uniform bound of the form q^a (where q is the cardinality of the residue field) for the normalized Shalika germs. Our proof of the bound uses the theorem of Harish-Chandra that normalized Shalika germs are bounded, and a model-theoretic statement for uniform bounds of motivic functions from Appendix B to [arXiv:1208.1945].

Newly reducible iterates in families of quadratic polynomials

We examine the question of when a quadratic polynomial f(x) defined over a number field K can have a newly reducible nth iterate, that is, f^n(x) irreducible over K but f^{n+1}(x) reducible over K, where f^n denotes the nth iterate of f. For each choice of critical point γof f(x), we consider the family g_{γ,m}(x)= (x - γ)^2 + m + γ, m \in K. For fixed n \geq 3 and nearly all values of γ, we show that there are only finitely many m such that g_{γ,m} has a newly reducible nth iterate. For n = 2 we show a similar result for a much more restricted set of γ. These results complement those obtained by Danielson and Fein in the higher-degree case. Our method involves translating the problem to one of finding rational points on certain hyperelliptic curves, determining the genus of these curves, and applying Faltings' theorem.

Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series of type C

We develop the theory of Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series for root systems of type C. For an arbitrary root system of rank r and a positive integer n, these are Dirichlet series in r complex variables with analytic continuation and functional equations isomorphic to the associated Weyl group. In type C, they conjecturally arise from the Fourier-Whittaker coefficients of minimal parabolic Eisenstein series on an n-fold metaplectic cover of SO(2r+1). For any odd n, we construct an infinite family of Dirichlet series conjecturally satisfying the above analytic properties. The coefficients of these series are exponential sums built from Gelfand-Tsetlin bases of certain highest weight representations. Previous attempts to define such series by Brubaker, Bump, and Friedberg in [6] and [7] required n to be sufficiently large, so that coefficients could be described by Weyl group orbits. We demonstrate that our construction agrees with that of [6] and [7] in the case where both series are defined, and hence inherits the desired analytic properties for n sufficiently large. Moreover our construction is valid even for n=1, where we prove our series is a Whittaker coefficient of an Eisenstein series. This requires the Casselman-Shalika formula for unramified principal series and a remarkable deformation of the Weyl character formula of Hamel and King [20].
