Adversarial Robustness of Deep Sensor Fusion Models

We experimentally study the robustness of deep camera-LiDAR fusion architectures for 2D object detection in autonomous driving. First, we find that the fusion model is usually both more accurate, and more robust against single-source attacks than single-sensor deep neural networks. Furthermore, we show that without adversarial training, early fusion is more robust than late fusion, whereas the two perform similarly after adversarial training. However, we note that single-channel adversarial training of deep fusion is often detrimental even to robustness. Moreover, we observe cross-channel externalities, where single-channel adversarial training reduces robustness to attacks on the other channel. Additionally, we observe that the choice of adversarial model in adversarial training is critical: using attacks restricted to cars' bounding boxes is more effective in adversarial training and exhibits less significant cross-channel externalities. Finally, we find that joint-channel adversarial training helps mitigate many of the issues above, but does not significantly boost adversarial robustness.

Improve CAM with Auto-adapted Segmentation and Co-supervised Augmentation

Weakly Supervised Object Localization (WSOL) methods generate both classification and localization results by learning from only image category labels. Previous methods usually utilize class activation map (CAM) to obtain target object regions. However, most of them only focus on improving foreground object parts in CAM, but ignore the important effect of its background contents. In this paper, we propose a confidence segmentation (ConfSeg) module that builds confidence score for each pixel in CAM without introducing additional hyper-parameters. The generated sample-specific confidence mask is able to indicate the extent of determination for each pixel in CAM, and further supervises additional CAM extended from internal feature maps. Besides, we introduce Co-supervised Augmentation (CoAug) module to capture feature-level representation for foreground and background parts in CAM separately. Then a metric loss is applied at batch sample level to augment distinguish ability of our model, which helps a lot to localize more related object parts. Our final model, CSoA, combines the two modules and achieves superior performance, e.g. $37.69\%$ and $48.81\%$ Top-1 localization error on CUB-200 and ILSVRC datasets, respectively, which outperforms all previous methods and becomes the new state-of-the-art.

Spontaneous spin-up induced by turbulence-driven topological transition of orbits in a tokamak plasma

Spontaneous spin-up are widely observed in tokamak plasmas, which is crucially important for plasma confinement. A kinetic theory is proposed to show that a toroidal rotation of core plasma is induced by the topological transition of orbits driven by turbulent diffusion in a collisionless tokamak plasma. The theoretical prediction agrees well with the well-known Rice-scaling of intrinsic core plasma flow. This new theory predicts an intrinsic core parallel flow of $\sim 100km/s$ for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor.

Transport equation for plasmas in a stationary-homogeneous turbulence

For a plasma in a stationary homogeneous turbulence, the Fokker-Planck equation is derived from the nonlinear Vlasov equation by introducing the entropy principle. The ensemble average in evaluating the kinetic diffusion tensor, whose symmetry has been proved, can be computed in a straightforward way when the fluctuating particle trajectories are provided. As an application, it has been shown that a mean electric filed can drive a particle flux through the Stokes-Einstein relation, independent of the details of turbulence.

Co-current rotation of the bulk ions due to the ion orbit loss at the edge of a tokamak plasma

Flux-surface-averaged momentum loss and parallel rotation of the bulk ions at the edge of a tokamak plasma due to the ion orbit loss are calculated by computing the minimum loss energy of both the trapped and the passing thermal ions. The flux-surface-averaged parallel rotation of the bulk ions is in the co-current direction. The peak of the co-current rotation speed locates inside the last closed flux surface due to the orbit loss of the co-current thermal ions at the very edge of a tokamak plasma. The peaking position moves inward when the ion temperature increases.

From Liouville's theorem to quasilinear, nonlinear stochastic, and fractional transport, a multi-scale kinetics of plasma turbulence

From Liouville's equation, a phase-space multi-scale transport equation is systematically derived. The proposed phase-space multi-scale transport equation based on the first principle indicates that the nonlinear stochastic transport is due to the micro-turbulence scattering while the familiar quasilinear transport is due to the long-range correlation of the meso-scale coherent modes; and more interestingly, it demonstrates a systematic derivation of the fractional transport equation that may provide a new view-angle to understand the anomalous transport observed in plasma turbulence. The multi-scale kinetics suggests a new approach to confinement improvement through the formation of nonlinearly self-organized stable large-scale structures.

Parallel acceleration due to the radial electric field in a magnetized plasma with low-frequency turbulence

A new physical mechanism of the parallel acceleration of a turbulent magnetized plasma is discovered by using a Fokker-Planck phase space stochastic transport equation. It is found that the random walk of a charged particle is correlated with the random change of the parallel velocity due to the radial electric field and the magnetic moment conservation. This correlation leads to a parallel acceleration of the plasma with a finite parallel fluid flow.

On the kinetic theory of turbulence in plasmas

From the nonlinear (NL) Vlasov equation, a NL turbulence scattering term is found to describe the stochastic dissipation on the time scale longer than the turbulence correlation time. The evolution of the plasma distribution is determined by the well-understood unperturbed motion of charged particles, with the effects of fluctuating part of fields described by the turbulence scattering term. In the new framework, one can identify various important physics, covering from the linear and quasilinear to the NL regime; in particular, the connections between the widely used Kadomtsev-Pogutse's equation and Frieman-Chen's equation. The NL scattering term indicates the Onsager symmetry relation of turbulent transport and a NL frequency or k spectrum shift of a resonantly excited wave.
