Particle dynamics and Stochastic Resonance in Periodic potentials

We have studied the dynamics of a particle in a periodically driven underdamped periodic potential. Recent studies have reported the occurrence of Stochastic Resonance (SR) in such systems in the high frequency regime, using input energy per period of external drive as a quantifier. The particle trajectories in these systems can be in two dynamical states characterised by their definite energy and phase relation with the external drive. SR is due to the noise assisted transition of the particles between these two states. We study the role of damping on the occurrence of SR. We show that a driven underdamped periodic system exhibits SR only if the damping is below a particular limit. To explain this we study the syatem in the deterministic regime. The existence of the two dynamical states in the deterministic regime is dependent on the amount of damping and the amplitude od external drive. We also study the input energy distributions and phase difference of the response amplitude with the external drive as afunction of the friction parameter.

Ratchet effect in an underdamped periodic potential and its characterisation

Ratchet effect in a driven underdamped periodic potential system is studied. The presence of a space dependent and periodic friction coefficient, but with a phase difference with the symmetric periodic potential is shown to generate substantial ratchet current. The ratchet performance is characterised in terms of the various parameters of transport. The performance of this ratchet is compared with a ratchet with an underlying periodic and asymmetric potential. It is shown that an optimum combination of inhomogeneity in the system and asymmetry of the potential can substantially enhance the performance of an underdamped ratchet.

Deterministic inhomogeneous inertia ratchets

We study the deterministic dynamics of a periodically driven particle in the underdamped case in a spatially symmetric periodic potential. The system is subjected to a space-dependent friction coefficient, which is similarly periodic as the potential but with a phase difference. We observe that frictional inhomogeneity in a symmetric periodic potential mimics most of the qualitative features of deterministic dynamics in a homogeneous system with an asymmetric periodic potential. We point out the need of averaging over the initial phase of the external drive at small frictional inhomogeneity parameter values or analogously low potential asymmetry regimes in obtaining ratchet current. We also show that at low amplitudes of the drive, where ratchet current is not possible in the deterministic case, noise plays a significant role in realizing ratchet current.
