New results for thermal interquark bottomonium potentials using NRQCD from the HAL QCD method

We report progress in the calculation of the thermal interquark potential of bottomonium using the HAL QCD method applied to bottom quarks in the non-relativistic approximation (i.e. NRQCD). We exploit the fast Fourier transform algorithm, using a momentum space representation, to efficiently calculate NRQCD correlation functions of non-local mesonic S-wave states, and thus obtain the potential for temperatures in both the hadronic and plasma phases. This work was performed on our anisotropic 2+1 flavour ''Generation 2'' FASTSUM ensembles.

Hadrons at high temperature: an update from the FASTSUM collaboration

We present the most recent results from the FASTSUM collaboration for hadron properties at high temperature. This includes the temperature dependence of the light and charmed meson and baryon spectrum, as well as properties of heavy quarkonia. The results are obtained using anisotropic lattices with a fixed scale approach. We also present the status of our next generation gauge ensembles.

Thermal Transitions in Dense Two-Colour QCD

The infamous sign problem makes it impossible to probe dense (baryon density $μ_B>0$) QCD at temperatures near or below the deconfinement threshold. As a workaround, one can explore QCD-like theories such as two-colour QCD (QC2D) which don't suffer from this sign problem but are qualitively similar to real QCD. Previous studies on smaller lattice volumes have investigated deconfinement and colour superfluid to normal matter transitions. In this study we look at a larger lattice volume $N_s=24$ in an attempt to disentangle finite volume and finite temperature effects. We also fit to a larger number of diquark sources to better allow for extrapolation to zero diquark source.

A comparison of spectral reconstruction methods applied to non-zero temperature NRQCD meson correlation functions

We present results from the fastsum collaboration's programme to determine the spectrum of the bottomonium system as a function of temperature. Three different methods of extracting spectral information are discussed: a Maximum Likelihood approach using a Gaussian spectral function for the ground state, the Backus Gilbert method, and the Kernel Ridge Regression machine learning procedure. We employ the fastsum anisotropic lattices with 2+1 dynamical quark flavours, with temperatures ranging from 47 to 375 MeV.

Fundamental thresholds of realistic quantum error correction circuits from classical spin models

Mapping quantum error correcting codes to classical disordered statistical mechanics models and studying the phase diagram of the latter has proven a powerful tool to study the fundamental error robustness and associated critical error thresholds of leading quantum error correcting codes under phenomenological noise models. In this work, we extend this mapping to admit realistic, multi-parameter faulty quantum circuits in the description of quantum error correcting codes. Based on the underlying microscopic circuit noise model, we first systematically derive the associated strongly correlated classical spin models. We illustrate this approach in detail for the example of a quantum repetition code in which faulty stabilizer readout circuits are periodically applied. Finally, we use Monte-Carlo simulations to study the resulting phase diagram of the associated interacting spin model and benchmark our results against a minimum-weight perfect matching decoder. The presented method provides an avenue to assess the fundamental thresholds of QEC codes and associated readout circuitry, independent of specific decoding strategies, and can thereby help guiding the development of near-term QEC hardware.

Rapid thermal co-annihilation through bound states in QCD

The co-annihilation rate of heavy particles close to thermal equilibrium, which plays a role in many classic dark matter scenarios, can be "simulated" in QCD by considering the pair annihilation rate of a heavy quark and antiquark at a temperature of a few hundred MeV. We show that the so-called Sommerfeld factors, parameterizing the rate, can be defined and measured non-perturbatively within the NRQCD framework. Lattice measurements indicate a modest suppression in the octet channel, in reasonable agreement with perturbation theory, and a large enhancement in the singlet channel, much above the perturbative prediction. The additional enhancement is suggested to originate from bound state formation and subsequent decay. Making use of a Green's function based method to incorporate thermal corrections in perturbative co-annihilation rate computations, we show that qualitative agreement with lattice data can be found once thermally broadened bound states are accounted for. We suggest that our formalism may also be applicable to specific dark matter models which have complicated bound state structures.

In-medium quarkonium properties from a lattice QCD based effective field theory

In order to understand the experimental data on heavy quarkonium production in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC it is necessary (though not sufficient) to pinpoint the properties of heavy $Q\bar{Q}$ bound states in the deconfined quark-gluon plasma, including their dissolution. Here we present recent results on the temperature dependence of bottomonium and charmonium correlators, as well as their spectral functions in a lattice QCD based effective field theory called NRQCD, surveying temperatures close to the crossover transition $140 {\rm MeV} < T< 249 {\rm MeV}$. The spectra are reconstructed based on a novel Bayesian prescription, whose systematic uncertainties are assessed. We present indications for sequential melting of different quarkonium species with respect to their vacuum binding energies and give estimates on the survival of S-wave and P-wave ground states.

Lattice NRQCD study of quarkonium at non-zero temperature

To study the in-medium modification of quarkonium properties, charmonium correlators at $140.4 (β=6.664) \le T \le 221 (β= 7.280)$ (MeV) are calculated using the NRQCD formalism on $48^3 \times 12$ gauge configurations with dynamical $N_f = 2 + 1$ flavors of Highly Improved Staggered Quarks (HISQ). To determine the "zero energy shift" for these lattices, we perform a fine zero temperature scan ($β=6.664, 6.740, 6.800, 6.880, 6.950, 7.030, 7.150$ and $7.280$). We find that the temperature dependence of charmonium correlators is stronger than the temperature dependence of bottomonium correlators in a given channel. This fits into the expected pattern of sequential quarkonium melting.

Lattice NRQCD study of S- and P-wave bottomonium states in a thermal medium with $N_f=2+1$ light flavors

We investigate the properties of S-and P-wave bottomonium states in the vicinity of the deconfinement transition temperature. The light degrees of freedom are represented by dynamical lattice QCD configurations of the HotQCD collaboration with $N_f = 2 + 1$ flavors. Bottomonium correlators are obtained from bottom quark propagators, computed in nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics (NRQCD) under the background of these gauge field configurations. The spectral functions for the $^3S_1$ ($Υ$) and $^3P_1$ ($χ_{b1}$) channel are extracted from the Euclidean time correlators using a novel Bayesian approach in the temperature region $140 {\rm MeV} \le T \le 249 {\rm MeV}$ and the results are contrasted to those from the standard maximum entropy method. We find that the new Bayesian approach is far superior to the maximum entropy method. It enables us to study reliably the presence or absence of the lowest state signal in the spectral function of a certain channel, even under the limitations present in the finite temperature setup. We find that $χ_{b1}$ survives up to $T=249 {\rm MeV}$, the highest temperature considered in our study and put stringent constraints on the size of the medium modification of $Υ$ and $χ_{b1}$ states.

Nonrelativistic lattice study of stoponium

We calculate the bound state properties of stoponium using lattice formulation of nonrelativistic effective field theory for stop which is moving nonrelativistically in the rest frame of stoponium. Our calculation method is similar to that employed in lattice nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics (NRQCD) studies for charmonium and bottominum. Using $16^3 \times 256$ quenched lattice gauge field configurations at $a^{-1} = 50(1) {\rm GeV}$, we obtain the stopoinium mass and the lattice matrix element which is related to the wavefunction at the origin for the $1S$ state and find that the lattice $|R_{1S} (0)|^2/M_{1S}^3$ is $3.5 \sim 4$ larger than that from a potential model calculation for $200 {\rm GeV} \le M_{1S} \le 800 {\rm GeV}$.

Lattice NRQCD study on in-medium bottomonium spectra using a novel Bayesian reconstruction approach

We present recent results on the in-medium modification of S- and P-wave bottomonium states around the deconfinement transition. Our study uses lattice QCD with $N_f=2+1$ light quark flavors to describe the non-perturbative thermal QCD medium between $140$MeV$<T<249$MeV and deploys lattice regularized non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) effective field theory to capture the physics of heavy quark bound states immersed therein. The spectral functions of the $^3S_1$ $(Υ)$ and $^3P_1$ $(χ_{b1})$ bottomonium states are extracted from Euclidean time Monte Carlo simulations using a novel Bayesian prescription, which provides higher accuracy than the Maximum Entropy Method. Based on a systematic comparison of interacting and free spectral functions we conclude that the ground states of both the S-wave $(Υ)$ and P-wave $(χ_{b1})$ channel survive up to $T=249$MeV. Stringent upper limits on the size of the in-medium modification of bottomonium masses and widths are provided.

NRQCD based S- and P-wave bottomonium spectra at finite temperature from $48^3 \times 12$ lattices with $N_f=2+1$ light HISQ flavors

We study S-wave and P-wave bottomonium spectral functions at non-zero temperature in 2+1 flavor QCD using the NRQCD formulation for bottom quarks. We use a novel Bayesian approach to reconstruct the spectral functions and find that $χ_{b1}$ survives up to $T=249 {\rm MeV}$. We also study the effect of different temporal discretizations of the NRQCD formalism on the bottomonium correlation functions

The bottomonium spectrum at finite temperature from $N_f=2+1$ lattice QCD

We present results on the bottomonium spectrum at temperatures above and below the deconfinement crossover temperature, $T_c$, from dynamical lattice QCD simulations. The heavy quark is treated with a non-relativistic effective field theory on the lattice and serves as a probe of the hot medium. Ensembles with a finer spatial lattice spacing and a greater range of temperatures below $T_c$ than those previously employed by this collaboration are used. In addition, there are $N_f=2+1$ flavours of Wilson clover quark in the sea with $M_π\approx400$ MeV and we perform a more careful tuning of the bottom quark mass in this work. We calculate the spectral functions of S and P wave bottomonium states using the maximum entropy method and confirm earlier findings on the survival of the ground state S wave states up to at least $2T_c$ and the immediate dissociation of the P wave states above $T_c$.

preprint2013arXiv

Bottomonium spectrum at finite temperature

We investigate the modification of S and P wave states in the bottomonium spectrum above and below the deconfinement crossover temperature through their spectral functions obtained from the maximum entropy method. Anisotropic ensembles with $N_f=2+1$ Wilson clover fermions with tadpole-improvement are used while the bottom quark is treated with an improved non-relativistic action. We observe significant modifications of the P wave $χ_{b1}$ ground state directly above the crossover temperature, $T_c$, while the S wave $Υ$ ground state remains relatively unchanged up to temperatures of almost $2T_c$. This evidence supports earlier conclusions from our FASTSUM collaboration of the immediate dissociation of the P wave states above $T_c$ and the survival of the S wave ground states up to $2T_c$.

Conformality in many-flavour lattice QCD at strong coupling

It is widely believed that chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken at zero temperature in the strong coupling limit of staggered fermions, for any number of colors and flavors. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we show that this conventional wisdom, based on a mean-field analysis, is wrong. For sufficiently many fundamental flavors, chiral symmetry is restored via a bulk, first-order transition. This chirally symmetric phase appears to be analytically connected with the expected conformal window of many-flavor continuum QCD. We perform simulations in the chirally symmetric phase at zero quark mass for various system sizes L, and measure the torelon mass, the Dirac spectrum and the hadron spectrum. All masses go to zero with 1/L. L is hence the only infrared length scale. Thus, the strong-coupling chirally restored phase appears as a convenient laboratory to study IR-conformality. Finally, we present a conjecture for the phase diagram of lattice QCD as a function of the bare coupling and the number of quark flavors.

Lattice NRQCD study of in-medium bottomonium states using $N_f = 2+1, 48^3 \times 12$ HotQCD configurations

The behavior of bottomonium state correlators at non-zero temperature, $140.4 (β= 6.664) \le T \le 221 (β= 7.280)$ (MeV), where the transition temperature is $154(9)$ (MeV), is studied, using lattice NRQCD on $48^3 \times 12$ HotQCD HiSQ action configurations with light dynamical $N_f = 2 + 1$ ($m_{u,s}/m_s = 0.05$) staggered quarks. In order to understand finite temperature effects on quarkonium states, zero temperature behavior of bottomonium correlators is compared based on $32^4$ ($β= 6.664, 6.800$ and $6.950$) and $48^3 \times 64$ ($β= 7.280)$ lattices. We find that temperature effects on S-wave bottomonium states are small but P-wave bottomonium states show a noticeable temperature dependence above the transition temperature.

P wave bottomonium spectral functions in the QGP from lattice NRQCD

We present an overview of bottomonium spectral functions in the quark-gluon plasma, obtained by the FASTSUM collaboration, using lattice QCD simulations with two light quark flavours on anisotropic lattices. The bottom quark is treated nonrelativistically. While we find that the S wave ground states survive up to the highest temperature we consider, we have strong indications that P wave states melt immediately above Tc.

Quark-gluon plasma phenomenology from the lattice

The FASTSUM Collaboration has calculated several quantities relevant for QCD studies at non-zero temperature using the lattice technique. We report here our results for the (i) interquark potential in charmonium; (ii) bottomonium spectral functions; and (iii) electrical conductivity. All results were obtained with 2+1 flavours of dynamical fermions on an anisotropic lattice which allows greater resolution in the temporal direction.

S wave bottomonium states moving in a quark-gluon plasma from lattice NRQCD

We extend our study of bottomonium spectral functions in the quark-gluon plasma to nonzero momentum. We use lattice QCD simulations with two flavours of light quark on highly anisotropic lattices and treat the bottom quark with nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD). We focus on S wave (Upsilon and eta_b) channels and consider nonrelativistic velocities, v/c < 0.2. A comparison with predictions from effective field theory is made.

A surprise with many-flavor staggered fermions in the strong coupling limit

It is widely believed that chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken at zero temperature in the strong coupling limit of staggered fermions, for any number of colors and flavors. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we show that this conventional wisdom, based on a mean-field analysis, is wrong. For sufficiently many fundamental flavors, chiral symmetry is restored via a bulk, first-order transition. This chirally symmetric phase appears to be analytically connected with the expected conformal window of many-flavor continuum QCD. We perform simulations in the chirally symmetric phase at zero quark mass for various system sizes L, and measure the torelon mass and the Dirac spectrum. We find that all observables scale with L, which is hence the only infrared length scale. Thus, the strong-coupling chirally restored phase appears as a convenient laboratory to study IR-conformality. Finally, we present a conjecture for the phase diagram of lattice QCD as a function of the bare coupling and the number of quark flavors.

Non-relativistic spectrum of two-color QCD at non-zero baryon density

The heavy quarkonium spectrum of Two Color QCD (QC$_2$D) at non-zero quark chemical potential $μ$ and temperature $T$ with $μ/T\gg1$ has been calculated in both $S$- and $P$-wave channels using a lattice non-relativistic formulation of QC$_2$D. As $μ$ is varied, the quarkonium spectra reveal three separate regions, corroborating previous findings that there are three distinct physical regimes of QC$_2$D at low temperature and high baryon density: hadronic matter, quark/quarkyonic matter, and deconfined matter. The results are interpreted in terms of the formation of heavy-light $Qq$ states in the two-color baryonic medium.

Phase structure of QC2D at high temperature and density

We study two-color QCD with two flavors of Wilson fermion as a function of quark chemical potential mu and temperature T. We find evidence of a superfluid phase at intermediate mu and low T where the quark number density and diquark condensate are both very well described by a Fermi sphere of nearly-free quarks disrupted by a BCS condensate. This gives way to a region of deconfined quark matter at higher T and mu, with the deconfinement temperature decreasing only very slowly with increasing chemical potential. We find that heavy quarkonium bound states persist in the S-wave channels at all T and mu, with an energy reflecting the phase structure. P-wave states appear not to survive in the quarkyonic region.

Two topics from lattice NRQCD at non-zero temperature: heavy quark mass dependence and S-wave bottomonium states moving in a thermal bath

Using Non-Relativistic QCD (NRQCD), we study heavy quark mass dependence of S-wave and P-wave bottomonium correlators for 0.42Tc <= T <= 2.09Tc and study spectral functions of S-wave bottomonium states moving in a thermal bath at these temperatures using Maximum Entropy Method with NRQCD kernel. For the studied momentum range, the energy of moving states shows quadratic momentum-dependence and the width of moving states does not show significant changes as the momentum of bottomonium is increased. Also, we find that in correlator ratios, the temperature effect is larger than the effect caused by 20% change in the bottom quark mass.

Bottomonium at Non-zero Temperature from Lattice Non-relativistic QCD

The temperature dependence of bottomonium states at temperatures above and below $T_c$ is presented, using non-relativistic dynamics for the bottom quark and full relativistic lattice QCD simulations for two light flavors on a highly anisotropic lattice. We find that the S-waves ($Υ$ and $η_b$) show little temperature dependence in this range while the P wave propagators show a crossover from the exponential decay characterizing the hadronic phase to a power-law behavior consistent with nearly-free dynamics at approximately twice the critical temperature.

Lattice Study of Dense Matter with Two Colors and Four Flavors

We present results from a simulation of SU(2) lattice gauge theory with N_f=4 flavors of Wilson fermion and non-zero quark chemical potential mu, using the same 12^3x24 lattice, bare gauge coupling, and pion mass in cut-off units as a previous study with N_f=2. The string tension for N_f=4 is found to be considerably smaller implying smoother gauge field configurations. Thermodynamic observables and order parameters for superfluidity and color deconfinement are studied, and comparisons drawn between the two theories. Results for quark density and pressure as functions of mu are qualitatively similar for N_f=2 and N_f=4; in both cases there is evidence for a phase in which baryonic matter is simultaneously degenerate and confined. Results for the stress-energy tensor, however, suggest that while N_f=2 has a regime where dilute matter is non-relativistic and weakly-interacting, N_f=4 matter is relativistic and strongly-interacting for all values of mu above onset.

Polarization of prompt J/psi in pp -> J/psi+X at sqrt{s}=200 GeV

Within the framework of the nonrelativistic QCD factorization approach, we compute the cross section and polarization of prompt J/psi produced from proton-proton collisions at the center-of-momentum energy sqrt{s}=200 GeV. We present the transverse-momentum distribution in the forward-rapidity region 1.2 < |y| < 2.2 and the rapidity distribution over the transverse-momentum range 2 GeV < p_T < 20 GeV. The perturbative contributions are computed at leading order in the strong coupling constant. We predict slight transverse polarization of J/psi in the forward-rapidity region, while that for the mid-rapidity region is slightly longitudinal. The transverse-momentum distribution agrees well with the PHENIX preliminary data and the color-singlet-model prediction at next-to-leading order in alpha_s, but disagrees with the result from the leading-order color-singlet model or the s-channel-cut method.

What happens to the Upsilon and eta_b in the quark-gluon plasma? Bottomonium spectral functions from lattice QCD

We study bottomonium spectral functions in the quark-gluon plasma in the Upsilon and eta_b channels, using lattice QCD simulations with two flavours of light quark on highly anisotropic lattices. The bottom quark is treated with nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD). In the temperature range we consider, 0.42 < T/T_c < 2.09, we find that the ground states survive, whereas the excited states are suppressed as the temperature is increased. The position and width of the ground states are compared to analytical effective field theory (EFT) predictions. Systematic uncertainties of the maximum entropy method (MEM), used to construct the spectral functions, are discussed in some detail.

A Quarkyonic Phase in Dense Two Color Matter?

We present results from simulations of Two Color QCD with two Wilson quark flavors in the presence of a quark chemical potential mu at two different lattice spacings. The equation of state, conformal anomaly, superfluid order parameter and Polyakov line are all discussed. Our results suggest that the transition from hadronic to quark matter, and that from confined to deconfined matter occur at distinct values of mu, consistent with the existence of a quarkyonic phase in this model.

Polarization of prompt J/psi in proton-proton collisions at RHIC

Within the framework of the nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization approach, we compute the polarization of prompt J/psi produced at the Brookhaven's Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider from proton-proton collisions at the center-of-momentum energy sqrt{s}=200 GeV. The perturbative contributions are computed at leading order in the strong coupling constant. The prediction reveals that the color-singlet contribution severely underestimates the PHENIX preliminary data for the differential cross section integrated over the rapidity range |y|<0.35 and its contribution is strongly transversely polarized, which disagrees with the PHENIX preliminary data. After including the color-octet contributions, we find that the NRQCD predictions for both the cross section and polarization over the transverse-momentum range 1.5 GeV < p_T < 5 GeV (1.5 GeV < p_T < 2 GeV) integrated over the rapidity range |y|<0.35 (1.2 < |y| < 2.2) agree with the data within errors.

Relativistic corrections to the axial vector and vector currents in the bar{b}c meson system at order alpha_s

We compute the short distance coefficients for the NRQCD factorization formulas of the meson-to-vacuum matrix elements for the axial vector and vector parts of the charged weak current in the $S$-wave spin-singlet and -triplet bar{b}c mesons, respectively. The computation is carried out to order alpha_s including relativistic corrections of all orders in vec{q}^{2n}, where vec{q} is the relative momentum of the bar{b} and c in the meson rest frame. The relativistic corrections at order alpha_s are new. The results reveal that the relativistic corrections to the leptonic decay rate of the B_c meson at order alpha_s or less converge rapidly, which shows a strong contrast to the uncomfortably large corrections of order alpha_s^2|vec{q}|^0. The short distance coefficients listed in this paper can be employed to compute the resummation of relativistic corrections to the phenomenological measurables that involve B_c and B_c^* production and decay.

On meson spectral functions at high temperature and nonzero momentum

In the high-temperature phase of QCD meson spectral functions at nonzero momentum are expected to have a nontrivial and interesting structure. In order to provide a reference point for lattice studies employing e.g. the Maximal Entropy Method, we discuss several characteristics of meson spectral functions in the infinite-temperature limit. We report on ongoing work in quenched QCD with staggered fermions.

Lattice Gauge Theory of Three Dimensional Thirring Model

Three dimensional Thirring model with $N$ four-component Dirac fermions, reformulated as a lattice gauge theory, is studied by computer simulation. According to an $8^{3}$ data and preliminary $16^3$ data, chiral symmetry is found to be spontaneously broken for $N=2,\;4$ and 6. $N=2$ data exhibits long tail of the non-vanishing chiral condensate into weak coupling region, and $N=6$ case shows phase separation between the strong coupling region and the weak coupling region. Although the comparison between $8^3$ data and $16^3$ data shows large finite volume effects, an existence of the critical fermion flavor number $N_{\rm cr}$ $(2<N_{\rm cr}<6)$ for which the chiral behavior changes its character, is suggested by the current numerical data.

Evidence for hard chiral logarithms in quenched lattice QCD

We present the first direct evidence that quenched QCD differs from full QCD in the chiral ($m_q \rightarrow 0$) limit, as predicted by chiral perturbation theory, from our quenched lattice QCD simulations at $β= 6/g^2 = 6.0$. We measured the spectrum of light hadrons on $16^3 \times 64$, $24^3 \times 64$ and $32^3 \times 64$, using staggered quarks of masses $m_q=0.01$, $m_q=0.005$ and $m_q=0.0025$. The pion masses showed clear evidence for logarithmic violations of the PCAC relation $m_π^2 \propto m_q$, as predicted by quenched chiral perturbation theory. The dependence on spatial lattice volume precludes this being a finite size effect. No evidence was seen for such chiral logarithms in the behaviour of the chiral condensate $\langle\barψψ\rangle$.
