Neutron Stars in Mimetic Gravity

In this paper, a modified version of the hydrostatic equilibrium equation based on the mimetic gravity in the presence of perfect fluid is revisited. By using the different known equation of states, the structural properties of neutron stars are investigated in general relativity and mimetic gravity. Comparing the obtained results, we show that, unlike general relativity, we can find the appropriate equation of states that support observational data in the context of mimetic gravity. We also find that the results of relativistic mean-field-based models of the equation of states are in better agreement with observational data than non-relativistic models.

Critical Phenomena and Reentrant Phase Transition of Asymptotically Reissner-Nordstrom Black Holes

By considering a small correction to the Maxwell field, we show that the resultant black hole solutions (also known as the asymptotically Reissner--Nordström black holes) undergo the reentrant phase transition and can have a novel phase behavior. We also show that such a small nonlinear correction of the Reissner--Nordström black holes has high effects on the phase structure of the solutions. It leads to a new classification in the canonical ensemble of extended phase space providing the values of the nonlinearity parameter $α$ being $α\lesseqqgtr 4q^{2}/7$. We shall study these three classes and investigate deviations from those of the standard Reissner--Nordström solutions. Interestingly, we find that there is the reentrant phase transition for $α<4q^{2}/7$, and for the case of $α=4q^{2}/7$ there is no phase transition below (at) the critical point. For the last case, one finds that small and large black holes are thermodynamically distinguishable for temperatures and pressures higher than the critical ones.

Charged black hole chemistry with massive gravitons

In the subject of black hole chemistry, a broad variety of critical phenomena for charged topological black holes (TBHs) with massive gravitons (within the framework of dRGT massive gravity) is discussed in detail. Since critical behavior and nature of possible phase transition(s) crucially depend on the specific choice of ensemble, and, in order to gain more insight into criticality in the massive gravity framework, we perform our analysis in both the canonical (fixed charge, $Q$) and the grand canonical (fixed potential, $Φ$) ensembles. It is shown that, for charged TBHs in the grand canonical ensemble, the van der Waals (vdW) phase transition could take place in $d \ge 5$, the reentrant phase transition (RPT) in $d \ge 6$ and the analogue of triple point in $d \ge 7$ which are different from the results of canonical ensemble. In the canonical ensemble, the vdW phase transition is observed in $d \ge 4$, the vdW type phase transition in $d \ge 6$ and the critical behavior associated with the triple point in $d \ge 6$. In this regard, the appearance of grand canonical $P-V$ criticality and the associated phase transition(s) in black holes with various topologies depend on the effective topological factor $k_{\rm{eff}}^{\rm{(GC)}} \equiv {[k + {m_g^2}c_0^2{c_2} - 2({d_3}/{d_2}){Φ^2}]}$ instead of $k$ in Einstein gravity, where $k$ is the normalized topological factor ($k_{\rm{eff}}^{\rm{(C)}} \equiv [k + {m_g^2}c_0^2{c_2}]$ plays this role in the canonical ensemble of TBHs in massive gravity). Such evidence gives the (grand) canonical study of extended phase space thermodynamics with massive gravitons a special significance.

Five-Dimensional Yang-Mills Black Holes in Massive Gravity's Rainbow

In this paper, we will analyze a five-dimensional Yang-Mills black hole solution in massive gravity's rainbow. We will also investigate the flow of such a solution with scale. Then, we will discuss the scale dependence of the thermodynamics for this black hole. Also, we study the criticality in the extended phase space by treating the cosmological constant as the thermodynamics pressure of this black hole solution. Moreover, we will use the partition function for this solution to obtaining corrections to the thermodynamics of this system and examine their key role on the behavior of corrected solutions.

Instability and phase transitions of a rotating black hole in the presence of perfect fluid dark matter

In this paper, we study the thermodynamic features of a rotating black hole surrounded by perfect fluid dark matter. We analyze the critical behavior of the black hole by considering the known relationship between pressure and cosmological constant. We show that the black hole admits a first order phase transition and, both rotation and perfect fluid dark matter parameters have a significant impact on the critical quantities. We also introduce a new ad hoc pressure related to the perfect fluid dark matter and find a first order van der Waals like phase transition. In addition, using the sixth order WKB method, we investigate the massless scalar quasinormal modes (QNMs) for the static spherically symmetric black hole surrounded by dark matter. Using the finite difference scheme, the dynamical evolution of the QNMs is also discussed for different values of angular momentum and overtone parameters.

Quasinormal modes of black holes in Weyl gravity: Electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations

The recent reported gravitational wave detection motivates one to investigate the properties of different black hole models, especially their behavior under (axial) gravitational perturbation. Here, we study the quasinormal modes of black holes in Weyl gravity. We derive the master equation describing the quasinormal radiation by using a relation between the Schwarzschild-anti de Sitter black holes and Weyl solutions, and also the conformal invariance property of the Weyl action. It will be observed that the quasinormal mode spectra of the Weyl solutions deviate from those of the Schwarzschild black hole due to the presence of an additional linear $r$-term in the metric function. We also consider the evolution of the Maxwell field on the background spacetime and obtain the master equation of electromagnetic perturbations. Then, we use the WKB approximation and asymptotic iteration method to calculate the quasinormal frequencies. Finally, the time evolution of modes is studied through the time-domain integration of the master equation.

Stability and Quasinormal Modes of Black Holes in Conformal Weyl Gravity

In this paper, we first investigate the thermal stability of black holes in conformal Weyl gravity with a comparison with the Schwarzschild black holes. Then, we consider a minimally coupled massive scalar perturbation and calculate the quasinormal modes in asymptotically dS spacetime by employing the sixth order WKB approximation and asymptotic iteration method. The deviations from those of the Schwarzschild-dS solutions are obtained and the possibility of the presence of quasi-resonance modes for Weyl black hole solutions is investigated. Finally, we consider a massless scalar perturbation in the background of asymptotically AdS solutions and calculate the quasinormal modes by using the pseudospectral method. The effects of the free parameter of the theory on the quasinormal modes are studied and deviations from those of the Schwarzschild-AdS black holes are investigated. The imaginary part of quasinormal frequencies in AdS spacetime is the time scale of a thermal state (in the conformal field theory) to approach thermal equilibrium.

Alternative approach to thermodynamic phase transitions

One of the major open problems in theoretical physics is a consistent quantum gravity theory.Recent developments in thermodynamic phase transitions ofblack holes and their van der Waals-like behavior may provide an interesting quantum interpretation of classical gravity. Studyingdifferent methods of investigating phase transitions can extend our insight into the nature of quantumgravity. In this paper, we present an alternative theoretical approach for finding thermodynamicphase transitions in the extended phase space. Unlike the standard methods based on the usualequation of state involving temperature, our approach usesa new quasi-equation constructed fromthe slope of temperature versus entropy. This approach addresses some of the shortcomings ofthe other methods, and provides a simple and powerful way of studying the critical behavior of athermodynamical system. Among the applications of this approach, we emphasize the analyticaldemonstration of possible phase transition points, and theidentification of the non-physical rangeof horizon radii for black holes.

Thermodynamic description and quasinormal modes of adS black holes in Born-Infeld massive gravity with a non-abelian hair

We construct a new class of asymptotically (a)dS black hole solutions of Einstein-Yang-Mills massive gravity in the presence of Born-Infeld nonlinear electrodynamics. The obtained solutions possess a Coulomb electric charge, massive term and a non-abelian hair as well. We calculate the conserved and thermodynamic quantities, and investigate the validity of the first law of thermodynamics. Also, we investigate thermal stability conditions by using the sign of heat capacity through canonical ensemble. Next, we consider the cosmological constant as a thermodynamical pressure and study the van der Waals like phase transition of black holes in the extended phase space thermodynamics. Our results indicate the existence of a phase transition which is affected by the parameters of theory. Finally, we consider a massless scalar perturbation in the background of asymptotically adS solutions and calculate the quasinormal modes by employing the pseudospectral method. The imaginary part of quasinormal frequencies is the time scale of a thermal state (in the conformal field theory) for the approach to thermal equilibrium.

Criticality and extended phase space thermodynamics of AdS black holes in higher curvature massive gravity

Considering de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley theory of massive gravity coupled with (ghost free) higher curvature terms arisen from the Lovelock Lagrangian, we obtain charged AdS black hole solutions in diverse dimensions. We compute thermodynamic quantities in the extended phase space by considering the variations of the negative cosmological constant, Lovelock coefficients ($α_{i}$) and massive couplings ($c_{i}$), and prove that such variations is necessary for satisfying the extended first law of thermodynamics as well as associated Smarr formula. In addition, by performing a comprehensive thermal stability analysis for the topological black hole solutions, we show in what regions thermally stable phases exist. Calculations show the results are radically different from those in Einstein gravity. Furthermore, we investigate $P-V$ criticality of massive charged AdS black holes in higher dimensions, including the effect of higher curvature terms and massive parameter, and find that the critical behavior and phase transition can happen for non-compact black holes as well as spherically symmetric ones. The phase structure and critical behavior of topological AdS black holes are drastically restricted by the geometry of event horizon. In this regard, the universal ratio, i.e. $\frac{{{P_c}{v_c}}}{T_c}$, is a function of the event horizon topology. It is shown the phase structure of AdS black holes with non-compact (hyperbolic) horizon could give birth to three critical points corresponds to a reverse van der Waals behavior for phase transition which is accompanied with two distinct van der Waals phase transitions. For black holes with spherical horizon, the van der Waals, reentrant and analogue of solid/liquid/gas phase transitions are observed.

Nonsingular universe in massive gravity's rainbow

One of the fundamental open questions in cosmology is whether we can regard the universe evolution without singularity like a Big Bang or a Big Rip. This challenging subject stimulates one to regard a nonsingular universe in the far past with an arbitrarily large vacuum energy. Considering the high energy regime in the cosmic history, it is believed that Einstein gravity should be corrected to an effective energy dependent theory which could be acquired by gravity's rainbow. On the other hand, employing massive gravity provided us with solutions to some of the long standing fundamental problems of cosmology such as cosmological constant problem and self acceleration of the universe. Considering these aspects of gravity's rainbow and massive gravity, in this paper, we initiate studying FRW cosmology in the massive gravity's rainbow formalism. At first, we show that although massive gravity modifies the FRW cosmology, but it does not itself remove the big bang singularity. Then, we generalize the massive gravity to the case of energy dependent spacetime and find that massive gravity's rainbow can remove the early universe singularity. We bring together all the essential conditions for having a nonsingular universe and the effects of both gravity's rainbow and massive gravity generalizations on such criteria are determined.

Asymptotically charged BTZ Black Holes in Gravity's Rainbow

Motivated by the wide applications of BTZ black holes and interesting results of gravity's rainbow, we consider three dimensional rainbow solutions and investigate their thermodynamic properties. In addition to investigate black holes thermodynamics related to AdS/CFT correspondence, one may regard gravity's rainbow to to encode quantum gravity effects into the black hole solutions. We take into account the various models of linear and nonlinear electrodynamics and study their effects on the gravity's rainbow spacetime. We also examine thermal stability and find that obtained three dimensional rainbow black holes are thermally stable.

Critical behavior of charged black holes in Gauss-Bonnet gravity`s rainbow

Following an earlier study regarding Gauss-Bonnet-Maxwell black holes in the presence of gravity's rainbow [S. H. Hendi and M. Faizal, Phys. Rev. D 92, 044027 (2015)], in this paper, we will consider all constants as energy dependent ones. The geometrical and thermodynamical properties of this generalization are studied and the validation of the first law of thermodynamics is examined. Next, through the use of proportionality between cosmological constant and thermodynamical pressure, van der Waals-like behavior of these black holes in extended phase space is investigated. An interesting critical behavior for sets of rainbow functions in this case is reported. Also, the critical behavior of uncharged and charged solutions is analyzed and it is shown that the generalization to a charged case puts an energy dependent restriction on values of different parameters.

Black Holes in Gauss-Bonnet Gravity's Rainbow

In this paper, we will generalize the Gauss-Bonnet gravity to an energy dependent Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity, which we shall call as the Gauss-Bonnet gravity's rainbow. We will also couple this theory to a Maxwell's theory. We will analyze black hole solutions in this energy dependent Gauss-Bonnet gravity's rainbow. We will calculate the modifications to the thermodynamics of black holes in the Gauss-Bonnet's gravity's rainbow. We will demonstrate that even though the thermodynamics of the black holes get modified in the Gauss-Bonnet gravity's rainbow, the first law of thermodynamics still holds for this modified thermodynamics. We will also comment on the thermal stability of the black hole solutions in this theory.

Einstein-Born-Infeld-Massive Gravity: adS-Black Hole Solutions and their Thermodynamical properties

In this paper, we study massive gravity in the presence of Born-Infeld nonlinear electrodynamics. First, we obtain metric function related to this gravity and investigate the geometry of the solutions and find that there is an essential singularity at the origin ($r=0$). It will be shown that due to contribution of the massive part, the number, types and places of horizons may be changed. Next, we calculate the conserved and thermodynamic quantities and check the validation of the first law of thermodynamics. We also investigate thermal stability of these black holes in context of canonical ensemble. It will be shown that number, type and place of phase transition points are functions of different parameters which lead to dependency of stability conditions to these parameters. Also, it will be shown how the behavior of temperature is modified due to extension of massive gravity and strong nonlinearity parameter. Next, critical behavior of the system in extended phase space by considering cosmological constant as pressure is investigated. A study regarding neutral Einstein-massive gravity in context of extended phase space is done. Geometrical approach is employed to study the thermodynamical behavior of the system in context of heat capacity and extended phase space. It will be shown that GTs, heat capacity and extended phase space have consistent results. Finally, critical behavior of the system is investigated through use of another method. It will be pointed out that the results of this method is in agreement with other methods and follow the concepts of ordinary thermodynamics.

Geometrothermodynamics of black holes in Lovelock gravity with a nonlinear electrodynamics

The objective of the present paper is to analyze the phase transition of asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) black hole solutions in Lovelock gravity in the presence of nonlinear electrodynamics. First, we present the asymptotically AdS black hole solutions for two classes of the Born-Infeld type of nonlinear electrodynamics coupled with Einstein, Gauss-Bonnet and third order Lovelock gravity, separately. Then, in order to discuss the phase transition, we calculate both the heat capacity and the Ricci scalar of the thermodynamical line element. We present a comparison between the singular points of the Ricci scalar using Geometrothermodynamics method and the corresponding vanishing points of the heat capacity in the canonical ensemble. In addition, we discuss the effects of both Lovelock and nonlinear electrodynamics on the phase transition points.

Magnetic brane solutions of Lovelock gravity with nonlinear electrodynamics

In this paper, we consider logarithmic and exponential forms of nonlinear electrodynamics as a source and obtain magnetic brane solutions of the Lovelock gravity. Although these solutions have no curvature singularity and no horizon, they have a conic singularity with a deficit angle. We investigate the effects of nonlinear electrodynamics and the Lovelock gravity on the value of deficit angle and find that various terms of Lovelock gravity do not affect deficit angle. Next, we generalize our solutions to spinning cases with maximum rotating parameters in arbitrary dimensions and calculate the conserved quantities of the solutions. Finally, we consider nonlinear electrodynamics as a correction of the Maxwell theory and investigate the properties of the solutions.

Thermodynamics of third order Lovelock adS black holes in the presence of Born-Infeld type nonlinear electrodynamics

In this paper, we obtain topological black hole solutions of third order Lovelock gravity couple with two classes of Born-Infeld type nonlinear electrodynamics with anti-de Sitter asymptotic structure. We investigate geometric and thermodynamics properties of the solutions and obtain conserved quantities of the black holes. We examine the first law of thermodynamics and find that the conserved and thermodynamic quantities of the black hole solutions satisfy the first law of thermodynamics. Finally, we calculate the heat capacity and determinant of Hessian matrix to evaluate thermal stability in both canonical and grand canonical ensembles. Moreover, we consider extended phase space thermodynamics to obtain generalized first law of thermodynamics as well as extended Smarr formula.

Charge rotating black string in gravitating nonlinear electromagnetic fields

We construct a new class of charged rotating black string solutions coupled to a nonlinear electromagnetic field in the background of anti-de Sitter spaces. We consider two types of nonlinear electromagnetic field namely, logarithmic and exponential forms. We investigate the geometric effects of nonlinearity parameter and find that for large $r$, these solutions recover the rotating back string solutions of Einstein-Maxwell theory. We calculate the conserved and thermodynamic quantities of the rotating black string. We also analyze thermodynamics of the spacetime and verify the validity of the first law of thermodynamics for the obtained solutions.

Hawking radiation - quasi-normal modes correspondence and effective states for nonextremal Reissner-Nordström black holes

It is known that the nonstrictly thermal character of the Hawking radiation spectrum harmonizes Hawking radiation with black hole (BH) quasi-normal modes (QNM). This paramount issue has been recently analyzed in the framework of both Schwarzschild BHs (SBH) and Kerr BHs (KBH). In this assignment, we generalize the analysis to the framework of nonextremal Reissner-Nordström BHs (RNBH). Such a generalization is important because in both SBHs and KBHs an absorbed (or emitted) particle has only mass. Instead, in RNBHs the particle has charge as well as mass. In doing so, we expose that for the RNBH, QNMs can be naturally interpreted in terms of quantum levels for both particle emission and absorption. Conjointly, we generalize some concepts concerning the RNBH's "effective states".

Thermodynamic properties of asymptotically Reissner-Nordstrom black holes

Motivated by possible relation between Born-Infeld type nonlinear electrodynamics and an effective low-energy action of open string theory, asymptotically Reissner--Nordstrom black holes whose electric field is described by a nonlinear electrodynamics (NLED) are studied. We take into account a four dimensional topological static black hole ansatz and solve the field equations, exactly, in terms of the NLED as a matter field. The main goal of this paper is investigation of thermodynamic properties of the obtained black holes. Moreover, we calculate the heat capacity and find that the nonlinearity affects the minimum size of stable black holes. We also use Legendre-invariant metric proposed by Quevedo to obtain scalar curvature divergences. We find that the singularities of the Ricci scalar in Geometrothermodynamics (GTD) method take place at the Davies points.

Power-Law Entropic Corrections to Newton's Law and Friedmann Equations

A possible source of black hole entropy could be the entanglement of quantum fields in and out the horizon. The entanglement entropy of the ground state obeys the area law. However, a correction term proportional to a fractional power of area results when the field is in a superposition of ground and excited states. Inspired by the power-law corrections to entropy and adopting the viewpoint that gravity emerges as an entropic force, we derive modified Newton's law of gravitation as well as the corrections to Friedmann equations. In a different approach, we obtained power-law corrected Friedmann equation by starting from the first law of thermodynamics at apparent horizon of a FRW universe, and assuming that the associated entropy with apparent horizon has a power-law corrected relation. Our study shows a consistency between the obtained results of these two approaches. We also examine the time evolution of the total entropy including the power-law corrected entropy associated with the apparent horizon together with the matter field entropy inside the apparent horizon and show that the generalized second law of thermodynamics is fulfilled in a region enclosed by the apparent horizon.

Magnetic Branes Supported by Nonlinear Electromagnetic Field

Considering the nonlinear electromagnetic field coupled to Einstein gravity in the presence of cosmological constant, we obtain a new class of $d$-dimensional magnetic brane solutions. This class of solutions yields a spacetime with a longitudinal nonlinear magnetic field generated by a static source. These solutions have no curvature singularity and no horizons but have a conic geometry with a deficit angle $δϕ$. We investigate the effects of nonlinearity on the metric function and deficit angle and also find that for the special range of the nonlinear parameter, the solutions are not asymptotic AdS. We generalize this class of solutions to the case of spinning magnetic solutions, and find that when one or more rotation parameters are nonzero, the brane has a net electric charge which is proportional to the magnitude of the rotation parameters. Then, we use the counterterm method and compute the conserved quantities of these spacetimes. Finally, we obtain a constrain on the nonlinear parameter, such that the nonlinear electromagnetic field is conformally invariant.

Rotating Black Branes in the presence of nonlinear electromagnetic field

In this paper, we consider a class of gravity whose action represents itself as a sum of the usual Einstein-Hilbert action with cosmological constant and an $U(1)$ gauge field for which the action is given by a power of the Maxwell invariant. We present a class of the rotating black branes with Ricci flat horizon and show that the presented solutions may be interpreted as black brane solutions with two event horizons, extreme black hole and naked singularity provided the parameters of the solutions are chosen suitably. We investigate the properties of the solutions and find that for the special values of the nonlinear parameter, the solutions are not asymptotically anti-deSitter. At last, we obtain the conserved quantities of the rotating black branes and find that the nonlinear source effects on the electric field, the behavior of spacetime, type of singularity and other quantities.

Thermodynamics of Rotating Black Branes in Gauss-Bonnet-nonlinear Maxwell Gravity

We consider the Gauss-Bonnet gravity in the presence of a new class of nonlinear electromagnetic field, namely, power Maxwell invariant. By use of a suitable transformation, we obtain a class of real rotating solutions with $k$ rotation parameters and investigate some properties of the solutions such as existence of singularity(ies) and asymptotic behavior of them. Also, we calculate the finite action, thermodynamic and conserved quantities of the solutions and using the the Smarr-type formula to check the first law of thermodynamics.
