An efficient GPU-Parallel Coordinate Descent Algorithm for Sparse Precision Matrix Estimation via Scaled Lasso

The sparse precision matrix plays an essential role in the Gaussian graphical model since a zero off-diagonal element indicates conditional independence of the corresponding two variables given others. In the Gaussian graphical model, many methods have been proposed, and their theoretical properties are given as well. Among these, the sparse precision matrix estimation via scaled lasso (SPMESL) has an attractive feature in which the penalty level is automatically set to achieve the optimal convergence rate under the sparsity and invertibility conditions. Conversely, other methods need to be used in searching for the optimal tuning parameter. Despite such an advantage, the SPMESL has not been widely used due to its expensive computational cost. In this paper, we develop a GPU-parallel coordinate descent (CD) algorithm for the SPMESL and numerically show that the proposed algorithm is much faster than the least angle regression (LARS) tailored to the SPMESL. Several comprehensive numerical studies are conducted to investigate the scalability of the proposed algorithm and the estimation performance of the SPMESL. The results show that the SPMESL has the lowest false discovery rate for all cases and the best performance in the case where the level of the sparsity of the columns is high.

Functionality-Driven Musculature Retargeting

We present a novel retargeting algorithm that transfers the musculature of a reference anatomical model to new bodies with different sizes, body proportions, muscle capability, and joint range of motion while preserving the functionality of the original musculature as closely as possible. The geometric configuration and physiological parameters of musculotendon units are estimated and optimized to adapt to new bodies. The range of motion around joints is estimated from a motion capture dataset and edited further for individual models. The retargeted model is simulation-ready, so we can physically simulate muscle-actuated motor skills with the model. Our system is capable of generating a wide variety of anatomical bodies that can be simulated to walk, run, jump and dance while maintaining balance under gravity. We will also demonstrate the construction of individualized musculoskeletal models from bi-planar X-ray images and medical examinations.

Analysis of error dependencies on NewHope

Among many submissions to the NIST post-quantum cryptography (PQC) project, NewHope is a promising key encapsulation mechanism (KEM) based on the Ring-Learning with errors (Ring-LWE) problem. Since NewHope is an indistinguishability (IND)-chosen ciphertext attack secure KEM by applying the Fujisaki-Okamoto transform to an IND-chosen plaintext attack secure public key encryption, accurate calculation of decryption failure rate (DFR) is required to guarantee resilience against attacks that exploit decryption failures. However, the current upper bound of DFR on NewHope is rather loose because the compression noise, the effect of encoding/decoding of NewHope, and the approximation effect of centered binomial distribution are not fully considered. Furthermore, since NewHope is a Ring-LWE based cryptosystem, there is a problem of error dependency among error coefficients, which makes accurate DFR calculation difficult. In this paper, we derive much tighter upper bound on DFR than the current upper bound using constraint relaxation and union bound. Especially, the above-mentioned factors are all considered in derivation of new upper bound and the centered binomial distribution is not approximated to subgaussian distribution. In addition, since the error dependency is considered, the new upper bound is much closer to the real DFR than the previous upper bound. Furthermore, the new upper bound is parameterized by using Chernoff-Cramer bound in order to facilitate calculation of new upper bound for the parameters of NewHope. Since the new upper bound is much lower than the DFR requirement of PQC, this DFR margin is used to improve the security and bandwidth efficiency of NewHope. As a result, the security level of NewHope is improved by 7.2 % or bandwidth efficiency is improved by 5.9 %.

CurlingNet: Compositional Learning between Images and Text for Fashion IQ Data

We present an approach named CurlingNet that can measure the semantic distance of composition of image-text embedding. In order to learn an effective image-text composition for the data in the fashion domain, our model proposes two key components as follows. First, the Delivery makes the transition of a source image in an embedding space. Second, the Sweeping emphasizes query-related components of fashion images in the embedding space. We utilize a channel-wise gating mechanism to make it possible. Our single model outperforms previous state-of-the-art image-text composition models including TIRG and FiLM. We participate in the first fashion-IQ challenge in ICCV 2019, for which ensemble of our model achieves one of the best performances.

Self-Supervised Fast Adaptation for Denoising via Meta-Learning

Under certain statistical assumptions of noise, recent self-supervised approaches for denoising have been introduced to learn network parameters without true clean images, and these methods can restore an image by exploiting information available from the given input (i.e., internal statistics) at test time. However, self-supervised methods are not yet combined with conventional supervised denoising methods which train the denoising networks with a large number of external training samples. Thus, we propose a new denoising approach that can greatly outperform the state-of-the-art supervised denoising methods by adapting their network parameters to the given input through selfsupervision without changing the networks architectures. Moreover, we propose a meta-learning algorithm to enable quick adaptation of parameters to the specific input at test time. We demonstrate that the proposed method can be easily employed with state-of-the-art denoising networks without additional parameters, and achieve state-of-the-art performance on numerous benchmark datasets.

Reasoning about Uncertainty in Metric Spaces

We set up a model for reasoning about metric spaces with belief theoretic measures. The uncertainty in these spaces stems from both probability and metric. To represent both aspect of uncertainty, we choose an expected distance function as a measure of uncertainty. A formal logical system is constructed for the reasoning about expected distance. Soundness and completeness are shown for this logic. For reasoning on product metric space with uncertainty, a new metric is defined and shown to have good properties.
