Bekenstein bounds and inequalities between size, charge, angular momentum and energy for bodies

Bekenstein bounds for the entropy of a body imply an universal inequality between size, energy, angular momentum and charge. We prove this inequality in Electromagnetism. We also prove it, for the particular case of zero angular momentum, in General Relativity. We further discuss the relation of these inequalities with inequalities between size, angular momentum and charge recently studied in the literature.

Geometric inequalities for black holes

It is well known that the three parameters that characterize the Kerr black hole (mass, angular momentum and horizon area) satisfy several important inequalities. Remarkably, some of these inequalities remain valid also for dynamical black holes. This kind of inequalities play an important role in the characterization of the gravitational collapse. They are closed related with the cosmic censorship conjecture. In this article recent results in this subject are reviewed.

On the linear stability of the extreme Kerr black hole under axially symmetric perturbations

We prove that for axially symmetric linear gravitational perturbations of the extreme Kerr black hole there exists a positive definite and conserved energy. This provides a basic criteria for linear stability in axial symmetry. In the particular case of Minkowski, using this energy we also prove pointwise boundedness of the perturbation in a remarkable simple way.

Positive energy theorems in General Relativity

The aim of this chapter is to present an introduction and also an overview of some of the most relevant results concerning positivity energy theorems in General Relativity. These theorems provide the answer to a long standing problem that has been proved remarkably difficult to solve. They constitute one of the major results in classical General Relativity and they uncover a deep self-consistence of the theory.

Lower Bounds for the Area of Black Holes in Terms of Mass, Charge, and Angular Momentum

The most general formulation of Penrose's inequality yields a lower bound for ADM mass in terms of the area, charge, and angular momentum of black holes. This inequality is in turn equivalent to an upper and lower bound for the area in terms of the remaining quantities. In this note, we establish the lower bound for a single black hole in the setting of axisymmetric maximal initial data sets for the Einstein-Maxwell equations, when the non-electromagnetic matter fields are not charged and satisfy the dominant energy condition. It is shown that the inequality is saturated if and only if the initial data arise from the extreme Kerr-Newman spacetime. Further refinements are given when either charge or angular momentum vanish. Lastly, we discuss the validity of the lower bound in the presence of multiple black holes.

The wave equation on the extreme Reissner-Nordström black hole

We study the scalar wave equation on the open exterior region of an extreme Reissner-Nordström black hole and prove that, given compactly supported data on a Cauchy surface orthogonal to the timelike Killing vector field, the solution, together with its $(t,s,θ,ϕ)$ derivatives of arbitrary order, $s$ a tortoise radial coordinate, is bounded by a constant that depends only on the initial data. Our technique does not allow to study transverse derivatives at the horizon, which is outside the coordinate patch that we use. However, using previous results that show that second and higher transverse derivatives at the horizon of a generic solution grow unbounded along horizon generators, we show that any such a divergence, if present, would be milder for solutions with compact initial data.

Black hole Area-Angular momentum inequality in non-vacuum spacetimes

We show that the area-angular momentum inequality A\geq 8π|J| holds for axially symmetric closed outermost stably marginally trapped surfaces. These are horizon sections (in particular, apparent horizons) contained in otherwise generic non-necessarily axisymmetric black hole spacetimes, with non-negative cosmological constant and whose matter content satisfies the dominant energy condition.

Geometric inequalities for axially symmetric black holes

A geometric inequality in General Relativity relates quantities that have both a physical interpretation and a geometrical definition. It is well known that the parameters that characterize the Kerr-Newman black hole satisfy several important geometric inequalities. Remarkably enough, some of these inequalities also hold for dynamical black holes. This kind of inequalities play an important role in the characterization of the gravitational collapse, they are closed related with the cosmic censorship conjecture. Axially symmetric black holes are the natural candidates to study these inequalities because the quasi-local angular momentum is well defined for them. We review recent results in this subject and we also describe the main ideas behind the proofs. Finally, a list of relevant open problem is presented.

Stable isoperimetric surfaces in super-extreme Reissner-Nordström

We study isoperimetric surfaces in the Reissner-Nordström spacetime, with emphasis on the cuasilocal inequality between area and charge. We analyze the stability of the isoperimetric spheres and we found that there is a lower bound on the area in terms of the charge, and that the inequality is saturated in the transition from the superextremal to the subextremal case. We also derive a general inequality between area and charge for stable isoperimetric surfaces in maximal electro-vacuum initial data.

Area - Angular momentum inequality for axisymmetric black holes

We prove the local inequality $A \geq 8π|J|$, where $A$ and $J$ are the area and angular momentum of any axially symmetric closed stable minimal surface in an axially symmetric maximal initial data. From this theorem it is proved that the inequality is satisfied for any surface on complete asymptotically flat maximal axisymmetric data. In particular it holds for marginal or event horizons of black holes.

Axially symmetric spacetimes: numerical and analytical perspectives

Some new aspects of axially symmetric spacetimes are discussed. These results open the door for future interplay between analytical and numerical studies. The new developments are based on the role of the total mass in axial symmetry. Finally, a list of relevant open problems is presented. These problems can be hopefully solved with an interaction between numerical and analytical insights.

Extreme throat initial data set and horizon area--angular momentum inequality for axisymmetric black holes

We present a formula that relates the variations of the area of extreme throat initial data with the variation of an appropriate defined mass functional. From this expression we deduce that the first variation, with fixed angular momentum, of the area is zero and the second variation is positive definite evaluated at the extreme Kerr throat initial data. This indicates that the area of the extreme Kerr throat initial data is a minimum among this class of data. And hence the area of generic throat initial data is bounded from below by the angular momentum. Also, this result strongly suggests that the inequality between area and angular momentum holds for generic asymptotically flat axially symmetric black holes. As an application, we prove this inequality in the non trivial family of spinning Bowen-York initial data.

Horizon area--angular momentum inequality for a class of axially symmetric black holes

We prove an inequality between horizon area and angular momentum for a class of axially symmetric black holes. This class includes initial conditions with an isometry which leaves fixed a two-surface. These initial conditions have been extensively used in the numerical evolution of rotating black holes. They can describe highly distorted black holes, not necessarily near equilibrium. We also prove the inequality on extreme throat initial data, extending previous results.

Linear perturbations for the vacuum axisymmetric Einstein equations

In axial symmetry, there is a gauge for Einstein equations such that the total mass of the spacetime can be written as a conserved, positive definite, integral on the spacelike slices. This property is expected to play an important role in the global evolution. In this gauge the equations reduce to a coupled hyperbolic-elliptic system which is formally singular at the axis. Due to the rather peculiar properties of the system, the local in time existence has proved to resist analysis by standard methods. To analyze the principal part of the equations, which may represent the main source of the difficulties, we study linear perturbation around the flat Minkowski solution in this gauge. In this article we solve this linearized system explicitly in terms of integral transformations in a remarkable simple form. This representation is well suited to obtain useful estimates to apply in the non-linear case.

Axisymmetric evolution of Einstein equations and mass conservation

For axisymmetric evolution of isolated systems, we prove that there exists a gauge such that the total mass can be written as a positive definite integral on the spacelike hypersurfaces of the foliation and the integral is constant along the evolution. The conserved mass integral controls the square of the extrinsic curvature and the square of first derivatives of the intrinsic metric. We also discuss applications of this result for the global existence problem in axial symmetry.

Numerical evidences for the angular momentum-mass inequality for multiple axially symmetric black holes

We present numerical evidences for the validity of the inequality between the total mass and the total angular momentum for multiple axially symmetric (non-stationary) black holes. We use a parabolic heat flow to solve numerically the stationary axially symmetric Einstein equations. As a by product our method, we also give numerical evidences that there are no regular solutions of Einstein equations that describe two extreme, axially symmetric black holes in equilibrium.

On well-posedness, linear perturbations and mass conservation for axisymmetric Einstein equation

For axially symmetric solutions of Einstein equations there exists a gauge which has the remarkable property that the total mass can be written as a conserved, positive definite, integral on the spacelike slices. The mass integral provides a nonlinear control of the variables along the whole evolution. In this gauge, Einstein equations reduce to a coupled hyperbolic-elliptic system which is formally singular at the axis. As a first step in analyzing this system of equations we study linear perturbations on flat background. We prove that the linear equations reduce to a very simple system of equations which provide, thought the mass formula, useful insight into the structure of the full system. However, the singular behavior of the coefficients at the axis makes the study of this linear system difficult from the analytical point of view. In order to understand the behavior of the solutions, we study the numerical evolution of them. We provide strong numerical evidence that the system is well-posed and that its solutions have the expected behavior. Finally, this linear system allows us to formulate a model problem which is physically interesting by itself, since it is connected with the linear stability of black holes solutions in axial symmetry. This model can contribute significantly to solve the nonlinear problem and at the same time it appears to be tractable.

Initial data for fluid bodies in general relativity

We show that there exist asymptotically flat almost-smooth initial data for Einstein-perfect fluid's equation that represent an isolated liquid-type body. By liquid-type body we mean that the fluid energy density has compact support and takes a strictly positive constant value at its boundary. By almost-smooth we mean that all initial data fields are smooth everywhere on the initial hypersurface except at the body boundary, where tangential derivatives of any order are continuous at that boundary.
