Effect of the Atomic Dipole-Dipole Interaction on the Phase Diagrams of Field-Matter Interactions I: Variational procedure

We establish, within the second quantization method, the general dipole-dipole Hamiltonian interaction of a system of nn-level atoms. The variational energy surface of the nn-level atoms interacting with ℓ\ell-mode fields and under the Van Der Waals forces is calculated with respect the tensorial product of matter and electromagnetic field coherent states. This is used to determine the quantum phase diagram associated to the ground state of the system and quantify the effect of the dipole-dipole Hamiltonian interaction. By considering real induced electric dipole moments, we find the quantum phase transitions for 22- and 33-level atomic systems interacting with 11- and 22- modes of the electromagnetic field, respectively. The corresponding order of the transitions is established by means of Ehrenfest classification; for some undetermined cases, we propose two procedures: the difference of the expectation value of the Casimir operators of the 22-level subsystems, and by maximizing the Bures distance between neighbor variational solutions.

Quantum Phase Diagrams of Matter-Field Hamiltonians I: Fidelity, Bures Distance, and Entanglement

A general procedure is established to calculate the quantum phase diagrams for finite matter-field Hamiltonian models. The minimum energy surface associated to the different symmetries of the model is calculated as a function of the matter-field coupling strengths. By means of the ground state wave functions, one looks for minimal fidelity or maximal Bures distance surfaces in terms of the parameters, and from them the critical regions of those surfaces characterize the finite quantum phase transitions. Following this procedure for Na=1N_a=1 and Na=4N_a=4 particles, the quantum phase diagrams are calculated for the generalised Tavis-Cummings and Dicke models of 3-level systems interacting dipolarly with 22 modes of electromagnetic field. For Na=1N_a=1, the reduced density matrix of the matter allows us to determine the phase regions in a 22-simplex (associated to a general three dimensional density matrix), on the different 33-level atomic configurations, together with a measurement of the quantum correlations between the matter and field sectors. As the occupation probabilities can be measured experimentally, the existence of a quantum phase diagram for a finite system can be established.

Quantum Phase Diagrams of Matter-Field Hamiltonians II: Wigner Function Analysis

Non-classical states are of practical interest in quantum computing and quantum metrology. These states can be detected through their Wigner function negativity in some regions. In this paper, we calculate the ground state of the three-level generalised Dicke model for a single atom and determine the structure of its phase diagram using a fidelity criterion. We also calculate the Wigner function of the electromagnetic modes of the ground state through the corresponding reduced density matrix, and show in the phase diagram the regions where entanglement is present. A finer classification for the continuous phase transitions is obtained through the computation of the surface of maximum Bures distance.

The Structure of Phase Diagrams in Matter-Radiation Systems

We present a study of the structure of phase diagrams for matter-radiation systems, based on the use of coherent states and the catastrophe formalism, that compares very well with the exact quantum solutions as well as providing analytical expressions. Emphasis is made on 22- and 33-level systems, but in general nn-level systems in the presence of ℓ\ell electromagnetic modes are described. Due to the infinite-dimensional nature of the Hilbert space, and using the results of the analyses and the behaviour of the solutions, we construct a sequence of ever-approximating reduced bases, which make possible the study of larger systems both, in the number of atoms and in the number of excitations. These studies are of importance in fundamental quantum optics, quantum information, and quantum cryptography scenarios.

Phase Diagrams of Systems of 2 and 3 levels in the presence of a Radiation Field

We study the structure of the phase diagram for systems consisting of 2- and 3- level particles dipolarly interacting with a 1-mode electromagnetic field, inside a cavity, paying particular attention to the case of a finite number of particles, and showing that the divergences that appear in other treatments are a consequence of the mathematical approximations employed and can be avoided by studying the system in an exact manner quantum-mechanically or via a catastrophe formalism with variational trial states that satisfy the symmetries of the appropriate Hamiltonians. These variational states give an excellent approximation not only to the exact quantum phase space, but also to the energy spectrum and the expectation values of the atomic and field operators. Furthermore, they allow for analytic expressions in many of the cases studied. We find the loci of the transitions in phase space from one phase to the other, and the order of the quantum phase transitions are determined explicitly for each of the configurations, with and without detuning. We also derive the critical exponents for the various systems, and the phase structure at the triple point present in the Ξ-configuration of 3-level systems is studied.

Polychromatic phase diagram for nn-level atoms interacting with ℓ\ell modes of electromagnetic field

A system of NaN_a atoms of nn-levels interacting dipolarly with ℓ\ell modes of electromagnetic field is considered. The energy surface of the system is constructed from the direct product of the coherent states of U(n)(n) in the totally symmetric representation for the matter times the ℓ\ell coherent states of the electromagnetic field. A variational analysis shows that the collective region is divided into ℓ\ell zones, inside each of which only one mode of the electromagnetic field contributes to the ground state. In consequence, the polychromatic phase diagram for the ground state naturally divides itself into monochromatic regions. For the case of 33-level atoms in the ΞΞ-configuration in the presence of 22 modes, the variational calculation is compared with the exact quantum solution showing that both are in agreement.

Analytical study of quadratic and non-quadratic short-time behavior of quantum decay

The short-time behavior of quantum decay of an unstable state initially located within an interaction region of finite range is investigated using a resonant expansion of the survival amplitude. It is shown that in general the short-time behavior of the survival probability S(t)S(t) has a dependence on the initial state and may behave either as S(t)=1−O(t3/2)S(t)=1-\mathcal{O}(t^{3/2}) or as S(t)=1−O(t2)S(t)=1-\mathcal{O}(t^{2}). The above cases are illustrated by solvable models. The experiment reported in Ref. [1] does not distinguish between the above short-time behaviors.

Quantum phase transitions of three-level atoms interacting with a one-mode electromagnetic field

We apply the energy surface method to study a system of Na three-level atoms interacting with a one-mode radiation field in the Ξ, Λand V configurations. We obtain an estimation of the ground-state energy, the expectation value of the total number of excitations, and the separatrix of the model in the interaction parameter space, and compare the results with the exact solutions. We have first and second-order phase transitions, except for the V configuration which only presents second-order phase-transitions.

Invisibility of quantum systems to tunneling of matter waves

We show that an appropriate choice of the potential parameters in one-dimensional quantum systems allows for unity transmission of the tunneling particle at all incident tunneling energies, except at controllable exceedingly small incident energies. The corresponding dwell time and the transmission amplitude are indistinguishable from those of a free particle in the unity-transmission regime. This implies the possibility of designing quantum systems that are invisible to tunneling by a passing wave packet.

Transient effects and reconstruction of the energy spectra in the time evolution of transmitted Gaussian wave packets

We derive an exact analytical solution to the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for transmission of a Gaussian wave packet through an arbitrary potential of finite range. We consider the situation where the initial Gaussian wave packet is sufficiently broad in momentum space to guarantee that the resonance structure of the system is included in the dynamical description. We demonstrate that the transmitted wave packet exhibits a transient behavior which at very large distances and long times may be written as the free evolving Gaussian wave packet solution times the transmission amplitude of the system and hence it reproduces the resonance spectra of the system. This is a novel result that predicts the ultimate fate of the transmitted Gaussian wave packet. We also prove that at a fixed distance and very long times the solution goes as t−3/2t^{-3/2} which extends to arbitrary finite range potentials previous analysis on this issue. Our results are exemplified for single and multibarrier systems.
