Self-consistent approach for measuring the energy spectra and composition of cosmic rays and determining the properties of hadronic interactions at high energy

Air showers, produced by the interaction of energetic cosmic rays with the atmosphere, are an excellent alternative to study particle physics at energies beyond any human-made particle accelerator. For that, it is necessary to identify first the mass composition of the primary cosmic ray (and its energy). None of the existing high energy interaction models have been able to reproduce coherently all air shower observables over the entire energy and zenith angle phase space. This is despite having tried all possible combinations for the cosmic ray mass composition. This proposal outlines a self-consistent strategy to study high energy particle interactions and identify the energy spectra and mass composition of cosmic rays. This strategy involves the participation of different particle accelerators and astrophysics experiments. This is important to cover the entire cosmic ray energy range and a larger phase-space of shower observables to probe the high energy interaction models.

Constraining pion interactions at very high energies by cosmic ray data

We demonstrate that a substantial part of the present uncertainties in model predictions for the average maximum depth of cosmic ray-induced extensive air showers is related to very high energy pion-air collisions. Our analysis shows that the position of the maximum of the muon production profile in air showers is strongly sensitive to the properties of such interactions. Therefore, the measurements of the maximal muon production depth by cosmic ray experiments provide a unique opportunity to constrain the treatment of pion-air interactions at very high energies and to reduce thereby model-related uncertainties for the shower maximum depth.

Double parton scattering: Impact of nonperturbative parton correlations

We apply the phenomenological Reggeon Field Theory framework to investigate the relative importance of perturbative and nonperturbative multiparton correlations for the treatment of double parton scattering (DPS) in proton-proton collisions. We obtain a significant correction to the so-called effective cross section for DPS due to nonperturbative parton splitting. When combined with the corresponding perturbative contribution, this results in a rather weak energy and transverse momentum dependence of the effective cross section, in agreement with experimental observations at the Tevatron and the Large Hadron Collider. In addition, we observed that color fluctuations have a sizable impact on the calculated rate of double parton scattering and on the relative importance of the perturbative parton splitting mechanism.

LHC results and hadronic interaction models

The present status of high energy cosmic ray interaction models is discussed, concentrating on recent model updates inspired by the data from Run 1 of the LHC. A special attention is devoted to the remaining differences in the model predictions and their relation to the underlying theoretical approaches. Opportunities for the model discrimination by future LHC and cosmic ray experimental studies are analyzed.

LHC data on inelastic diffraction and uncertainties in the predictions for longitudinal EAS development

Present status of experimental studies of inelastic diffraction at the Large Hadron Collider is analysed. Impact of the current uncertainties concerning the diffraction rate on the predicted extensive air shower development is investigated. Relation to studies of the primary composition of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays is illustrated by comparing numerical simulation results to the data of the Telescope Array experiment on the distributions of the shower maximum position.

Constraints from the first LHC data on hadronic event generators for ultra-high energy cosmic-ray physics

The determination of the primary energy and mass of ultra-high-energy cosmic-rays (UHECR) generating extensive air-showers in the Earth's atmosphere, relies on the detailed modeling of hadronic multiparticle production at center-of-mass (c.m.) collision energies up to two orders of magnitude higher than those studied at particle colliders. The first Large Hadron Collider (LHC) data have extended by more than a factor of three the c.m. energies in which we have direct proton-proton measurements available to compare to hadronic models. In this work we compare LHC results on inclusive particle production at energies sqrt(s) = 0.9, 2.36, and 7 TeV to predictions of various hadronic Monte Carlo (MC) models used commonly in cosmic-ray (CR) physics (QGSJET, EPOS and SIBYLL). As a benchmark with a standard collider physics model we also show PYTHIA (and PHOJET) predictions with various parameter settings. While reasonable overall agreement is found for some of the MC, none of them reproduces consistently the sqrt(s) evolution of all the observables. We discuss implications of the new LHC data for the description of cosmic-ray interactions at the highest energies.

Monte Carlo treatment of hadronic interactions in enhanced Pomeron scheme: I. QGSJET-II model

The construction of a Monte Carlo generator for high energy hadronic and nuclear collisions is discussed in detail. Interactions are treated in the framework of the Reggeon Field Theory, taking into consideration enhanced Pomeron diagrams which are resummed to all orders in the triple-Pomeron coupling. Soft and "semihard" contributions to the underlying parton dynamics are accounted for within the "semihard Pomeron" approach. The structure of cut enhanced diagrams is analyzed; they are regrouped into a number of subclasses characterized by positively defined contributions which define partial weights for various "macro-configurations" of hadronic final states. An iterative procedure for a Monte Carlo generation of the structure of final states is described. The model results for hadronic cross sections and for particle production are compared to experimental data.

The strong interaction at the collider and cosmic-rays frontiers

First data on inclusive particle production measured in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are compared to predictions of various hadron-interaction Monte Carlos (QGSJET, EPOS and SIBYLL) used commonly in high-energy cosmic-ray physics. While reasonable overall agreement is found for some of the models, none of them reproduces consistently the sqrt(s) evolution of all the measured observables. We discuss the implications of the new LHC data for the modeling of the non-perturbative and semihard parton dynamics in hadron-hadron and cosmic-rays interactions at the highest energies studied today.

Total and diffractive cross sections in enhanced Pomeron scheme

For the first time, a systematic analysis of the high energy behavior of total and diffractive proton-proton cross sections is performed within the Reggeon Field Theory framework, based on the resummation of all significant contributions of enhanced Pomeron diagrams to all orders with respect to the triple-Pomeron coupling. The importance of different classes of enhanced graphs is investigated and it is demonstrated that absorptive corrections due to "net"-like enhanced diagrams and due to Pomeron "loops" are both significant and none of those classes can be neglected at high energies. A comparison with other approaches based on partial resummations of enhanced diagrams is performed. In particular, important differences are found concerning the predicted high energy behavior of total and single high mass diffraction proton-proton cross sections, with our values of $σ_{pp}^{\rm tot}$ at $\sqrt{s}=14$ TeV being some $25\div40$% higher and with the energy rise of $σ_{\rm HM}^{\rm SD}$ saturating well below the LHC energy. The main causes for those differences are analyzed and explained.
