The intriguing mechanism of phosphorus anodes for sodium ion batteries revealed by operando pair distribution function and X-ray diffraction computed tomography

Phosphorus is one of the most promising anodes for sodium ion batteries (SIBs). Little is known about the structural mechanism of Na/P cycling due to the fact that only one of the structures involved (Na3P) is crystalline. Using operando X-ray diffraction computed tomography (XRD-CT) analysed by Rietveld and pair distribution (PDF) methods combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations we show that the sodiation and desodiation mechanisms of phosphorus are very different. Sodiation follows the thermodynamic path of lowest energy from P via NaP to Na3P while desodiation follows a kinetically controlled deintercalation mechanism in which the layered Na3-xP type structure is maintained until P nanoclusters form. Using XRD-CT allows analysis of the 3D structure of the anode, but most importantly, removes the contributions from the sample container and other battery components, particularly important for PDF analysis.

Observation of the Sb2S3-type post-post-GdFeO3-perovskite: A model structure for high density ABX3 and A2X3 phases

Ten years have passed since the description of the perovskite to post-perovskite transition in MgSiO3 and its' impact on the mineralogy and rheology of the D" region at the base of the Earth's mantle. Much work has explored the mechanisms operating during this transformation and their influence on seismic response. In parallel, calculations in ABX3 systems have identified potential structures for a denser post-post-perovskite phase occurring at higher pressures. However, experiments have yet to elucidate any higher pressure form, beyond the CaIrO3-type. Here we describe the structures and transformations that lead to the crystallisation of a post-post-perovskite of Sb2S3-type in a GdFeO3-type fluoroperovskite at high pressure conditions. The use of single-crystal techniques gives unique access to the relative crystallographic orientations of all polymorphs. We use this information to extend this description to include other calculated and observed forms that are competitive in ABX3 and A2X3 stoichiometries (e.g. Sb2S3, a-Gd2S3, Be3N2) and provide substantial information on inter-relationships between these structures, which is critical to the interpretation of transition mechanisms, predicting transition sequences, to the expression of directional properties in those transformed structures when assessing their suitability to modelling e.g. their rheological response in deep-Earth and exoplanet interiors.

Superconductivity in NdFe1-xCoxAsO (0.05 < x < 0.20) and rare-earth magnetic ordering in NdCoAsO

The phase diagram of NdFe1-xCoxAsO for low cobalt substitution consists of a superconducting dome (0.05 < x < 0.20) with a maximum critical temperature of 16.5(2) K for x = 0.12. The x = 1 end member, NdCoAsO, is an itinerant ferromagnet (TC = 85 K) with an ordered moment of 0.30(1) BM at 15 K. Below TN = 9 K, Nd spin-ordering results in the antiferromagnetic coupling of the existing ferromagnetic planes. Rietveld analysis reveals that the electronically important two-fold tetrahedral angle increases from 111.4 to 115.9 deg. in this series. Underdoped samples with x = 0.046(2) and x = 0.065(2) show distortions to the orthorhombic Cmma structure at 72(2) and 64(2) K, respectively. The temperature dependences of the critical fields Hc2(T) near Tc are linear with almost identical slopes of 2.3(1) T K-1 for x = 0.065(2), x = 0.118(2) and x = 0.172(2). The estimated critical field Hc2(0) and correlation length for optimally doped samples are 26(1) T and 36(1) Angstrom. A comparison of the maximum reported critical temperatures of well-characterized cobalt doped 122- and 1111-type superconductors is presented.
