A second order upper bound for the ground state energy of a hard-sphere gas in the Gross-Pitaevskii regime

We prove an upper bound for the ground state energy of a Bose gas consisting of $N$ hard spheres with radius $\mathfrak{a}/N$, moving in the three-dimensional unit torus $Λ$. Our estimate captures the correct asymptotics of the ground state energy, up to errors that vanish in the limit $N \to \infty$. The proof is based on the construction of an appropriate trial state, given by the product of a Jastrow factor (describing two-particle correlations on short scales) and of a wave function constructed through a (generalized) Bogoliubov transformation, generating orthogonal excitations of the Bose-Einstein condensate and describing correlations on large scales.

Ground state energy of a Bose gas in the Gross-Pitaevskii regime

We review some rigorous estimates for the ground state energy of dilute Bose gases. We start with Dyson's upper bound, which provides the correct leading order asymptotics for hard spheres. Afterwards, we discuss a rigorous version of Bogoliubov theory, which recently led to an estimate for the ground state energy in the Gross-Pitaevskii regime, valid up to second order, for particles interacting through integrable potentials. Finally, we explain how these ideas can be combined to establish a new upper bound, valid to second order, for the energy of hard spheres in the Gross-Pitaeavskii limit. Here we only sketch the main ideas, details will appear elsewhere.

A new second order upper bound for the ground state energy of dilute Bose gases

We establish an upper bound for the ground state energy per unit volume of a dilute Bose gas in the thermodynamic limit, capturing the correct second order term, as predicted by the Lee-Huang-Yang formula. This result has been first established in J. Stat. Phys. 136(3) by H.-T. Yau and J. Yin. Our proof, which applies to repulsive and compactly supported $V \in L^3 (\mathbb{R}^3)$, gives better rates and, in our opinion, is substantially simpler.

Bose-Einstein condensation for two dimensional bosons in the Gross-Pitaevskii regime

We consider systems of N bosons trapped on the two-dimensional unit torus, in the Gross-Pitaevskii regime, where the scattering length of the repulsive interaction is exponentially small in the number of particles. We show that low-energy states exhibit complete Bose-Einstein condensation, with almost optimal bounds on the number of orthogonal excitations.

Renormalization theory of a two dimensional Bose gas: quantum critical point and quasi-condensed state

We present a renormalization group construction of a weakly interacting Bose gas at zero temperature in the two-dimensional continuum, both in the quantum critical regime and in the presence of a condensate fraction. The construction is performed within a rigorous renormalization group scheme, borrowed from the methods of constructive field theory, which allows us to derive explicit bounds on all the orders of renormalized perturbation theory. Our scheme allows us to construct the theory of the quantum critical point completely, both in the ultraviolet and in the infrared regimes, thus extending previous heuristic approaches to this phase. For the condensate phase, we solve completely the ultraviolet problem and we investigate in detail the infrared region, up to length scales of the order $(λ^3 ρ_0)^{-1/2}$ (here $λ$ is the interaction strength and $ρ_0$ the condensate density), which is the largest length scale at which the problem is perturbative in nature. We exhibit violations to the formal Ward Identities, due to the momentum cutoff used to regularize the theory, which suggest that previous proposals about the existence of a non-perturbative non-trivial fixed point for the infrared flow should be reconsidered.

Low dimensional interacting bosons

The theory of ultracold, dilute Bose gases is the subject of intensive studies, driven by new experimental applications, which also motivate the study of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in low dimensions. From the theoretical point of view there are few, quite special, models in which we are able to prove BEC for interacting bosons. With the aim of studying the condensation problem I considered a simplified model for a three and two dimensional system of bosons interacting with a repulsive short range potential, obtained by introducing an ultraviolet momentum cutoff. I proved that the interacting theory is well defined at all orders in terms of one (in three dimensions) or two (in two dimensions) effective parameters, related to the intensity of the interaction. Moreover the correlations do not exhibit anomalous dimensions, i.e. the model is in the same universality class of the exactly soluble Bogoliubov model. The result is obtained by using Rigorous Renormalization Group techniques and implementing local Ward identities (WI), which reduce the number of independent running couplings, this fact being crucial for the control of the two dimensional theory, where the effective interactions are relevant. Since the ultraviolet momentum cutoff breaks local gauge invariance, the corrections to the formal WI have been considered.
