BGK model for multi-component gases near a global Maxwellian

In this paper, we establish the existence of the unique global-in-time classical solutions to the multi-component BGK model suggested in \cite{mixmodel} when the initial data is a small perturbation of global equilibrium. For this, we carefully analyze the dissipative nature of the linearized multi-component relaxation operator, and observe that the partial dissipation from the intra-species and the inter-species linearized relaxation operators are combined in a complementary manner to give rise to the desired dissipation estimate of the model We also observe that the convergence rate of the distribution function increases as the momentum-energy interchange rate between the different components of the gas increases.

Convergence results of a nested decentralized gradient method for non-strongly convex problems

We are concerned with the convergence of NEAR-DGD$^+$ (Nested Exact Alternating Recursion Distributed Gradient Descent) method introduced to solve the distributed optimization problems. Under the assumption of the strong convexity of local objective functions and the Lipschitz continuity of their gradients, the linear convergence is established in \cite{BBKW - Near DGD}. In this paper, we investigate the convergence property of NEAR-DGD$^+$ in the absence of strong convexity. More precisely, we establish the convergence results in the following two cases: (1) When only the convexity is assumed on the objective function. (2) When the objective function is represented as a composite function of a strongly convex function and a rank deficient matrix, which falls into the class of convex and quasi-strongly convex functions. Numerical results are provided to support the convergence results.

On a relativistic BGK model for polyatomic gases near equilibrium

Recently, a novel relativistic polyatomic BGK model was suggested by Pennisi and Ruggeri [J. of Phys. Conf. Series, 1035, (2018)] to overcome drawbacks of the Anderson-Witting model and Marle model. In this paper, we prove the unique existence and asymptotic behavior of classical solutions to the relativistic polyatomic BGK model when the initial data is sufficiently close to a global equilibrium.

BGK model of the multi-species Uehling-Uhlenbeck equation

We propose a BGK model of the quantum Boltzmann equation for gas mixtures. We also provide a sufficient condition that guarantees the existence of equilibrium coefficients so that the model shares the same conservation laws and $H$-theorem with the quantum Boltzmann equation. Unlike the classical BGK for gas mixtures, the equilibrium coefficinets of the local equilibiriums for quantum multi-species gases are defined through highly nonlinear relations that are not explicitly solvable. We verify in a unified way that such nonlinear relations uniquely determine the equilibrium coefficients under the condition, leading to the well-definedness of our model.

Convergence estimates of a semi-Lagrangian scheme for the ellipsoidal BGK model for polyatomic molecules

In this paper, we propose a new semi-Lagrangian scheme for the polyatomic ellipsoidal BGK model. In order to avoid time step restrictions coming from convection term and small Knudsen number, we combine a semi-Lagrangian approach for the convection term with an implicit treatment for the relaxation term. We show how to explicitly solve the implicit step, thus obtaining an efficient and stable scheme for any Knudsen number. We also derive an explicit error estimate on the convergence of the proposed scheme for every fixed value of the Knudsen number.

Propagation of $L^p$ estimates for the Spatially Homogeneous Relativistic Boltzmann Equation

In this paper, we prove the propagation of $L^p$ upper bounds for the spatially homogeneous relativistic Boltzmann equation for any $1<p<\infty$. We consider the case of relativistic \textit{hard ball} with Grad's angular cutoff. Our proof is based on a detailed study of the interrelationship between the relative momenta, the regularity and the $L^p$ estimates for the gain operator, the development of the relativistic Carleman representation, and several estimates on the relativistic hypersurface $E^{v_*}_{v'-v}$. We also derive a Pythagorean theorem for the \textit{relative momenta} $g(v,v_*),$ $g(v,v')$, and $g(v',v_*)$, which has a crucial role in the reduction of the momentum singularity.

Stationary quantum BGK model for bosons and fermions in a bounded interval

In this paper, we consider the existence problem for a stationary relaxational models of the quantum Boltzmann equation. More precisely, we establish the existence of mild solution to the fermionic or bosonic quantum BGK model in a slab with inflow boundary data. Unlike the classical case, it is necessary to verify that the quantum local equilibrium state is well-defined, and the transition from the non-condensed state to the condensated state (Bosons), or from the non-saturated state to the saturated state (Fermions) does not arise in our solution space.

Ellipsoidal BGK model near a global Maxwellian

The BGK model has been widely used in place of the Boltzmann equation because of the qualitatively satisfactory results it provides at relatively low computational cost. There is, however, a major drawback to the BGK model: The hydrodynamic limit at the Navier-Stokes level is not correct. One evidence is that the Prandtl number computed using the BGK model does not agree with what is derived from the Boltzmann equation. To overcome this problem, Holway \cite{Holway} introduced the ellipsoidal BGK model where the local Maxwellian is replaced by a non-isotropic Gaussian. In this paper, we prove the existence of classical solutions of the ES-BGK model when the initial data is a small perturbation of the global Maxwellian. The key observation is that the degeneracy of the ellipsoidal BGK model is comparable to that of the original BGK model or the Boltzmann equation in the range $-1/2<ν<1$.

The Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann System for Weakly Inhomogeneous Data

This paper is devoted to the study of the dynamics of charged particles in a weakly inhomogeneous dilute gas. More precisely, we consider the existence of unique global in time classical solutions for the Vlasov-MaxwellBoltzmann system and its asymptotic behavior when the particle distribution function is a small perturbation around an arbitrarily large homogenous solution of the Boltzmann equation.

The Boltzmann equation near a rotational local Maxwellian

In rotationally symmetric domains, the Boltzmann equation with specular reflection boundary condition has a special type of equilibrium states called the rotational local Maxwellian which, unlike the uniform Maxwellian, has an additional term related to the angular momentum of the gas. In this paper, we consider the initial boundary value problem of the Boltzmann equation near the rotational local Maxwellian. Based on the L2-L1 framework of [12], we establish the global well-posedness and the convergence toward such equilibrium states.

$L^p$-estimates of the Botlzmann Equation around a traveling local Maxwellian

In this paper, we are interested in the $L^p$-estimates of the Boltzmann equation in the case that the distribution function stays around a travelling local Maxwellian. For this, we divide both sides of the Boltzmann equation by the velocity distribution function with a fractional exponent and reformulate the Boltzmann equation into a regularized one. This amounts to endowing additional integrability on the collision kernel, which in turn enables us to apply simple Hölder type inequalities. Our results cover the whole range of Lebesgue exponents: $0<p\leq \infty$.

Cauchy problem for the Boltzmann-BGK model near a global Maxwellian

In this paper, we are interested in the Cauchy problem for the Boltzmann-BGK model for a general class of collision frequencies. We prove that the Boltzmann-BGK model linearized around a global Maxwellian admits a unique global smooth solution if the initial perturbation is sufficiently small in a high order energy norm. We also establish an asymptotic decay estimate and uniform $L^2$-stability for nonlinear perturbations.

Convergence of a Semi-Lagrangian Scheme for the BGK Model of the Boltzmann Equation

Recently, a new class of semi-Lagrangian methods for the BGK model of the Boltzmann equation has been introduced [8, 17, 18]. These methods work in a satisfactory way either in rarefied or fluid regime. Moreover, because of the semi-Lagrangian feature, the stability property is not restricted by the CFL condition. These aspects make them very attractive for practical applications. In this paper, we investigate the convergence properties of the method and prove that the discrete solution of the scheme converges in a weighted L1 norm to the unique smooth solution by deriving an explicit error estimate.
