Stars in the Local Galactic Thick Disk and Halo in Gaia EDR3: A catalogue of Half a Million Local Main-sequence Stars with Photometric Metallicities

We present a catalogue of 551,214 main-sequence stars in the local ($d < 2$ kpc) Galactic thick disk and halo, based on a search of stars with large proper motions ($μ_{\mathrm{tot}} > 40.0$ mas/yr) in the Gaia Early Data Release 3. We derive photometric metallicity calibrated from the colour-luminosity-metallicity distribution of 20,047 stars with spectroscopic metallicities, collected from various spectroscopic surveys, including SDSS SEGUE/APOGEE, GALAH DR3, and LAMOST DR6. We combine these results to construct an empirical colour-magnitude-metallicity grid, which can be used to estimate photometric metallicities for low-mass metal-poor stars of K and M subtypes from their absolute $G$ magnitude and colour values. We find that low-mass, high-velocity stars in our catalogue share similar kinematics as reported in recent studies of more luminous Galactic halo stars. The pseudo-kinematic analysis of our sample recovers the main local halo structures, including the Gaia-Enceladus Stream and the Helmi stream; aside from these the local halo stars appear to show a remarkably smooth distribution in velocity space. Since the future Gaia data release will provide radial velocity measurements for only a small number of our sample, our catalogue provides targets of high interest for the future spectroscopic observation programs like SDSS-V, DESI MW survey, WEAVE, and/or 4MOST.

A Catalog of 531 White Dwarf Candidates in the Local Galactic Halo from Gaia Data Release 2

We present a catalog of 531 white dwarf candidates that have large apparent transverse motions relative to the Sun ($v_{T} > 200$ km s$^{-1}$), thus making them likely members of the local Galactic halo population. The candidates were selected from the Gaia Data Release 2, and are located in a great circle with $20^\circ$ width running across both Galactic poles and Galactic center and anti-center, a zone that spans 17.3% of the sky. The selection used a combination of kinematic and photometric properties, derived primarily from Gaia proper motions, $G$ magnitudes, and $G_{\rm BP}\,-\,G_{\rm RP}$ color, and including parallax whenever available. Additional validation of the white dwarf candidates is made using PanSTARRS photometric ($gri$) data. Our final catalog includes not only stars having full kinematic and luminosity estimates from reliable Gaia parallax, but also stars with presently unreliable or no available Gaia parallax measurements. We argue that our method to select local halo objects with and without reliable parallax data leads us to rounding up all possible halo white dwarfs in the Gaia catalog (in that particular section of that sky) with recorded proper motions $> 40$ mas yr$^{-1}$, and that pass our $v_{T} > 200$ km s$^{-1}$ threshold requirement. We expect this catalog will be useful for the study of the white dwarf population of the local Galactic halo.

DA white dwarfs observed in LAMOST pilot survey

A total of $\sim640,000$ objects from LAMOST pilot survey have been publicly released. In this work, we present a catalog of DA white dwarfs from the entire pilot survey. We outline a new algorithm for the selection of white dwarfs by fitting Sérsic profiles to the Balmer H$β$, H$γ$ and H$δ$ lines of the spectra, and calculating the equivalent width of the CaII K line. 2964 candidates are selected by constraining the fitting parameters and the equivalent width of CaII K line. All the spectra of candidates are visually inspected. We identify 230 (59 of them are already in Villanova and SDSS WD catalog) DA white dwarfs, 20 of which are DA white dwarfs with non-degenerate companions. In addition, 128 candidates are classified as DA white dwarf/subdwarfs, which means the classifications are ambiguous. The result is consistent with the expected DA white dwarf number estimated based on the LEGUE target selection algorithm.

The puzzling assembly of the Milky Way halo - contributions from dwarf Spheroidals and globular clusters

While recent sky surveys have uncovered large numbers of ever fainter Milky Way satellites, their classification as star clusters, low-luminosity galaxies, or tidal overdensities remains often unclear. Likewise, their contributions to the build-up of the halo is yet debated. In this contribution we will discuss the current knowledge of the stellar populations and chemo-dynamics in these puzzling satellites, with a particular focus on dwarf spheroidal galaxies and the globular clusters in the outer Galactic halo. Also the question of whether some of the outermost halo objects are dynamically associated with the (Milky Way) halo at all is addressed in terms of proper measurements in the remote Leo I and II dwarf galaxies.
