$B \to K^*(\to Kπ) \ell^+\ell^-$ theory and the global picture: What's next?

The present status of the LHC anomalies found in exclusive semileptonic $b\to s\ell^+\ell^-$ decays is discussed with special emphasis on the exclusive 4-body angular distribution $B \to K^*(\to Kπ)\ell^+\ell^-$. The treatment of hadronic uncertainties in this mode is briefly reviewed, and some of the analyses in the literature are critically reassessed. The global picture provided by the global fit points to a coherent pattern of deviations with a significance substantially above 4$σ$ for different New Physics scenarios. Finally, we propose as the next step in the field to focus on the study of optimized observables that compare electron and muon modes, sensitive to lepton-flavour universality violations and free from hadronic uncertainties (including charm) in the SM, the so called $Q_i$ observables.

On the origin of the D0 like-sign dimuon charge asymmetry

We reconsider the recent observation by the D0 experiment of a sizable like-sign dimuon charge asymmetry, highlighting that it could be affected by CP-violating New Physics contributions not only in Bd- and Bs-meson mixings, but also in semileptonic decays of b and c quarks producing muons. The D0, measurement could be reconciled with the Standard Model expectations for neutral-meson mixings, provided that the CP asymmetry in semileptonic b (c) decays reaches 0.3 % (1%). Such effects, which lie within the available (rather loose) experimental bounds, would be clear indications of New Physics and should be investigated experimentally.

Theoretical status of $B \to K^* μ^+μ^-$: The path towards New Physics

We summarize the status of the analysis of the 4-body angular distribution $B \to K^*(\to K π) μ^+μ^-$ using a basis of optimized observables. We provide a New Physics interpretation of the pattern of deviations observed in the 1fb$^{-1}$ dataset with the coefficient of the semileptonic operator $O_9$ being the main responsible for this pattern. Also other scenarios involving more Wilson coefficients are briefly discussed. Further, we present a detailed description of each of the hadronic uncertainties entering our predictions and suggest possible tests for alternative hadronic explanations. Our most accurate SM predictions for the optimized observables in various bins including all uncertainties are also provided.

Future sensitivity to new physics in B_d, B_s and K mixings

We estimate, in a large class of scenarios, the sensitivity to new physics in B_d and B_s mixings achievable with 50 ab-1 of Belle II and 50 fb-1 of LHCb data. We find that current limits on new physics contributions in both B_{d,s} systems can be improved by a factor of ~5 for all values of the CP violating phases, corresponding to over a factor of 2 increase in the scale of new physics probed. Assuming the same suppressions by CKM matrix elements as those of the standard model box diagrams, the scale probed will be about 20 TeV for tree-level new physics contributions, and about 2 TeV for new physics arising at one-loop. We also explore the future sensitivity to new physics in K mixing. Implications for generic new physics and for various specific scenarios, such as minimal flavor violation, light third-generation dominated flavor violation, or U(2) flavor models are studied.

Of Contact Interactions and Colliders

The hierarchy of scales which would allow dimension-six contact interactions to parametrise New Physics may not be verified at colliders. Instead, we explore the feasability and usefulness of parametrising the high-energy tail of distributions at the LHC using form factors. We focus on the process pp -> l+l- in the presence of t (or s)-channel New Physics, guess a form factor from the partonic cross-section, and attempt to use data to constrain its coefficients, and the coefficients to constrain models. We find that our choice of form factor decribes t-channel exchange better than a contact interaction, and the coefficients in a particular model can be obtained from the partonic cross-section. We estimate bounds on the coefficients by fitting the form factors to available data. For the parametrisation corresponding to the contact interaction approximation, our expected bounds on the scale $Λ$ are within ~ 15% of the latest limits from the LHC experiments.

B ->K*ll: The New Frontier of New Physics searches in Flavor

The exclusive decay mode B ->K*ll has become one of the key players in the search for New Physics in flavor. An increasing number of observables are being studied experimentally, and with increasing precision. Its theoretical description is well under control, and an interesting set of clean observables have been identified, reducing further the theoretical uncertainties. Model-independent analyses show that in the near future this mode will either reveal NP through a pattern of correlated deviations from the SM, or pose very stringent constraints on radiative and semileptonic operators.

Optimizing the basis of B -> K* l+l- observables and understanding its tensions

We discuss the impact of recent LHCb data on the B -> K* mu+mu- decay for New Physics searches. We use an optimised set of observables with a limited sensitivity to hadronic inputs (form factors), leading to a significant deviation from the Standard Model for the semileptonic operator O9. We ascertain the robustness of our results with respect to models of power corrections, charm-loop effects, factorisation approaches, possible effects from resonance tails at low-recoil, choice of observables and binnings. We explain some contradictory results obtained for the chirality-flipped operator O9prime by different analyses by focusing on the sensitivity of observables at low recoil afflicted by the psi(4160) and possibly other resonances for B+-> K+ mu+mu- and illustrating the need for a finely binned analysis at large recoil (rather than a wide [1-6] bin). Finally, we present updated results including experimental correlations in B -> K* mu+ mu- observables, confirming the deviation seen with respect to the SM hypothesis (4.2 sigma for large-recoil data, 3.5 sigma for large- and low-recoil data).

Optimizing the basis of B->K*ll observables in the full kinematic range

We discuss the observables for the B->K*(->K pi)ll decay, focusing on both CP-averaged and CP-violating observables at large and low hadronic recoil with special emphasis on their low sensitivity to form-factor uncertainties. We identify an optimal basis of observables that balances theoretical and experimental advantages, which will guide the New Physics searches in the short term. We discuss some advantages of the observables in the basis, and in particular their improved sensitivity to New Physics compared to other observables. We present predictions within the Standard Model for the observables of interest, integrated over the appropriate bins including lepton mass corrections. Finally, we present bounds on the S-wave contribution to the distribution coming from the B->K_0*ll decay, which will help to establish the systematic error associated to this pollution.

Understanding the B->K*mu+mu- Anomaly

We present a global analysis of the B->K*(->K pi)mu+mu- decay using the recent LHCb measurements of the primary observables P_{1,2} and P'_{4,5,6,8}. Some of them exhibit large deviations with respect to the SM predictions. We explain the observed pattern of deviations through a large New Physics contribution to the Wilson coefficient of the semileptonic operator O9. This contribution has an opposite sign to the SM one, i.e., reduces the size of this coefficient significantly. A good description of data is achieved by allowing for New Physics contributions to the Wilson coefficients C7 and C9 only. We find a 4.5 sigma deviation with respect to the SM prediction, combining the large-recoil B->K*(->K pi)mu+mu- observables with other radiative processes. Once low-recoil observables are included the significance gets reduced to 3.9 sigma. We have tested different sources of systematics, none of them modifying our conclusions significantly. Finally, we propose additional ways of measuring the primary observables through new foldings.

Exploring New Physics in the C7-C7' plane

The Wilson coefficient C7 governing the radiative electromagnetic decays of B meson has been calculated to a very high accuracy in the Standard Model, but experimental bounds on either the magnitude or the sign of C7 are often model-dependent. In the present paper, we attempt at constraining both the magnitude and sign of C7 using a systematic approach. We consider already measured observables like the branching ratios of B \rightarrow Xs mu+ mu- and B \rightarrow Xs gamma, the isospin and CP asymmetries in B \rightarrow K* gamma, as well as AFB and FL in B \rightarrow K*l+l-. We also discuss the transverse observable AT2 which, once measured, may help to disentangle some of the scenarios considered. We explore the constraints on C7, C9, C10 as well as their chirality-flipped counterparts. Within our framework, we find that we need to extend the constraints up to 1.6 sigma to allow for the "flipped-sign solution" of C7. The SM solution for C7 exhibits a very mild tension if New Physics is allowed in dipole operators only. We provide semi-numerical expressions for all these observables as functions of the relevant Wilson coefficients at the low scale.

Implications from clean observables for the binned analysis of B -> K*ll at large recoil

We perform a frequentist analysis of q^2-dependent B-> K*(->Kpi)ll angular observables at large recoil, aiming at bridging the gap between current theoretical analyses and the actual experimental measurements. We focus on the most appropriate set of observables to measure and on the role of the q^2-binning. We highlight the importance of the observables P_i exhibiting a limited sensitivity to soft form factors for the search for New Physics contributions. We compute predictions for these binned observables in the Standard Model, and we compare them with their experimental determination extracted from recent LHCb data. Analyzing b->s and b->sll transitions within four different New Physics scenarios, we identify several New Physics benchmark points which can be discriminated through the measurement of P_i observables with a fine q^2-binning. We emphasise the importance (and risks) of using observables with (un)suppressed dependence on soft form factors for the search of New Physics, which we illustrate by the different size of hadronic uncertainties attached to two related observables (P_1 and S_3). We illustrate how the q^2-dependent angular observables measured in several bins can help to unravel New Physics contributions to B-> K*(->Kpi)ll, and show the extraordinary constraining power that the clean observables will have in the near future. We provide semi-numerical expressions for these observables as functions of the relevant Wilson coefficients at the low scale.

New Physics constraints from optimized observables in B -> K*ll at large recoil

B -> K*ll angular observables have become a key ingredient in global model-independent analyses of b->s transitions. However, as experimental precision improves, the use of theoretically clean quantities becomes a crucial issue. Global analyses that use clean observables integrated in small bins are already a reality, opening up a new chapter in our quest for New Physics.

Topological susceptibility on the lattice and the three-flavour quark condensate

We reanalyse the topological susceptibility assuming the possibility of a significant paramagnetic suppression of the three-flavour quark condensate and a correlated enhancement of vacuum fluctuations of $s\bar{s}$ pairs. Using the framework of resummed ChPT, we point out that simulations performed near the physical point, with a significant mass hierarchy between u,d and s dynamical quarks, are not able to disentangle the contributions from the quark condensate and sea $s\bar{s}$-pair fluctuations, and that simulations with three light quark masses of the same order are better suited for this purpose. We perform a combined fit of recent RBC/UKQCD data on pseudoscalar masses and decay constants as well as the topological susceptibility, and we reconsider the determination of lattice spacings in our framework, working out the consequences on the parameters of the chiral Lagrangian. We obtain Sigma(3;2 GeV)^1/3=243 \pm 12 MeV for the three-flavour quark condensate in the chiral limit. We notice a significant suppression compared to the two-flavour quark condensate Sigma(2;2 GeV)/Sigma(3;2 GeV)=1.51\pm 0.11 and we confirm previous findings of a competition between leading order and next-to-leading order contributions in three-flavour chiral series.

An analysis of B_{d,s} mixing angles in presence of New Physics and an update of Bs -> K0* anti-K0*

We discuss a simple approach to measure the weak mixing angles phi_s and phi_d of the Bs and Bd systems in the presence of New Physics. We present a new expression that allows one to measure directly the New Physics mixing angles if New Physics contributes significantly to the mixing only. We apply the method to specific penguin-mediated B->PP, B->PV and B ->VV modes. We provide a very stringent and simple bound on the direct CP asymmetries of all these modes, the violation of which is a signal of New Physics in decay. Within the same theoretical framework, an updated prediction for the branching ratio of Bs->K0* anti-K0* is presented, which can be compared with a recent LHCb analysis.

Extracting strong phase and $CP$ violation in $D$ decays by using quantum correlations in $ψ(3770)\to D^0 \overline{D}^0 \to (V_1V_2)(K π)$ and $ψ(3770)\to D^0\overline{D}^0\to (V_1V_2)(V_3V_4)

We exploit the angular and quantum correlations in the $D\bar{D}$ pairs produced through the decay of the $ψ(3770)$ resonance in a charm factory to investigate CP-violation in two different ways. We consider the case of $ψ(3770)\rightarrow D\bar{D}\rightarrow (V_1V_2)(Kπ)$ decays, which provide a new way to measure the strong phase difference $δ$ between Cabibbo-favored and doubly-Cabibbo suppressed $D$ decays required in the determination of the CKM angle $γ$. We also build CP-violating observables in $ψ(3770)\rightarrow D\bar{D}\rightarrow (V_1V_2)(V_3 V_4)$ to isolate specific new physics effects in the charm sector. Neglecting the systematics, we give a first rough estimate of the sensitivities of these measurements at BES-III with an integrated luminosity of 20 fb$^{-1}$ at $ψ(3770)$ peak and at a future super $τ$-charm factory with a luminosity of $10^{35}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$

Minimal Flavour Violation for Leptoquarks

Scalar leptoquarks, with baryon and lepton number conserving interactions, could have TeV scale masses, and be produced at colliders or contribute to a wide variety of rare decays. In pursuit of some insight as to the most sensitive search channels, We assume that the leptoquark-lepton-quark coupling can be constructed from the known mass matrices. We estimate the rates for selected rare processes in three cases: leptoquarks carrying lepton and quark flavour, leptoquarks with quark flavour only, and unflavoured leptoquarks. We find that leptoquark decay to top quarks is an interesting search channel.

Non-leptonic charmless Bc decays and their search at LHCb

We discuss the decay of Bc mesons into two light mesons (pi, K^(*), eta', rho, omega, phi). All these decay channels come from a single type of diagram, namely tree annihilation. This allows us to derive extremely simple SU(3) relations among these processes. The size of annihilation contributions is an important issue in B physics, and we provide two different estimates in the case of non-leptonic charmless Bc decays, either a comparison with annihilation decays of heavy-light mesons or a perturbative model inspired by QCD factorisation. We finally discuss a possible search for these channels at LHCb.

Penguin-mediated B_(d,s)->VV decays and the Bs - anti-Bs mixing angle

In this letter, we propose three different strategies to extract the weak mixing angle phi_s of the Bs system using penguin-mediated decays into vectors, mainly Bs->K*K*, Bs->phi K* and Bs->phi phi. We also provide predictions for the longitudinal branching ratio and CP-asymmetries of Bs->K*K* using a method that combines QCD factorisation with flavour symmetries to relate this decay to its Bd counterpart.
