Towards Feynman rules for conformal blocks

We conjecture a simple set of "Feynman rules" for constructing $n$-point global conformal blocks in any channel in $d$ spacetime dimensions, for external and exchanged scalar operators for arbitrary $n$ and $d$. The vertex factors are given in terms of Lauricella hypergeometric functions of one, two or three variables, and the Feynman rules furnish an explicit power-series expansion in powers of cross-ratios. These rules are conjectured based on previously known results in the literature, which include four-, five- and six-point examples as well as the $n$-point comb channel blocks. We prove these rules for all previously known cases, as well as for a seven-point block in a new topology and the even-point blocks in the "OPE channel." The proof relies on holographic methods, notably the Feynman rules for Mellin amplitudes of tree-level AdS diagrams in a scalar effective field theory, and is easily applicable to any particular choice of a conformal block.

A multipoint conformal block chain in $d$ dimensions

Conformal blocks play a central role in CFTs as the basic, theory-independent building blocks. However, only limited results are available concerning multipoint blocks associated with the global conformal group. In this paper, we systematically work out the $d$-dimensional $n$-point global conformal blocks (for arbitrary $d$ and $n$) for external and exchanged scalar operators in the so-called comb channel. We use kinematic aspects of holography and previously worked out higher-point AdS propagator identities to first obtain the geodesic diagram representation for the $(n+2)$-point block. Subsequently, upon taking a particular double-OPE limit, we obtain an explicit power series expansion for the $n$-point block expressed in terms of powers of conformal cross-ratios. Interestingly, the expansion coefficient is written entirely in terms of Pochhammer symbols and $(n-4)$ factors of the generalized hypergeometric function ${}_3F_2$, for which we provide a holographic explanation. This generalizes the results previously obtained in the literature for $n=4, 5$. We verify the results explicitly in embedding space using conformal Casimir equations.

Segmented strings and the McMillan map

We present new exact solutions describing motions of closed segmented strings in $AdS_3$ in terms of elliptic functions. The existence of analytic expressions is due to the integrability of the classical equations of motion, which in our examples reduce to instances of the McMillan map. We also obtain a discrete evolution rule for the motion in $AdS_3$ of arbitrary bound states of fundamental strings and D1-branes in the test approximation.

Perturbations of vortex ring pairs

We study pairs of co-axial vortex rings starting from the action for a classical bosonic string in a three-form background. We complete earlier work on the phase diagram of classical orbits by explicitly considering the case where the circulations of the two vortex rings are equal and opposite. We then go on to study perturbations, focusing on cases where the relevant four-dimensional transfer matrix splits into two-dimensional blocks. When the circulations of the rings have the same sign, instabilities are mostly limited to wavelengths smaller than a dynamically generated length scale at which single-ring instabilities occur. When the circulations have the opposite sign, larger wavelength instabilities can occur.

Strings and vortex rings

We treat string propagation and interaction in the presence of a background Neveu-Schwarz three-form field strength, suitable for describing vortex rings in a superfluid or low-viscosity normal fluid. A circular vortex ring exhibits instabilities which have been recognized for many years, but whose precise boundaries we determine for the first time analytically in the small core limit. Two circular vortices colliding head-on exhibit stronger instabilities which cause splitting into many small vortices at late times. We provide an approximate analytic treatment of these instabilities and show that the most unstable wavelength is parametrically larger than a dynamically generated length scale which in many hydrodynamic systems is close to the cutoff. We also summarize how the string construction we discuss can be derived from the Gross-Pitaevskii lagrangian, and also how it compares to the action for giant gravitons.

Gauge-invariant correlation functions in light-cone superspace

We initiate a study of correlation functions of gauge-invariant operators in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory using the light-cone superspace formalism. Our primary aim is to develop efficient methods to compute perturbative corrections to correlation functions. This analysis also allows us to examine potential subtleties which may arise when calculating off-shell quantities in light-cone gauge. We comment on the intriguing possibility that the manifest N=4 supersymmetry in this approach may allow for a compact description of entire multiplets and their correlation functions.

A manifestly MHV Lagrangian for N=4 Yang-Mills

We derive a manifestly MHV Lagrangian for the N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in light-cone superspace. This is achieved by constructing a canonical redefinition which maps the N=4 superfield and its conjugate to a new pair of superfields. In terms of these new superfields the N=4 Lagrangian takes a (non-polynomial) manifestly MHV form, containing vertices involving two superfields of negative helicity and an arbitrary number of superfields of positive helicity. We also discuss constraints satisfied by the new superfields, which ensure that they describe the correct degrees of freedom in the N=4 supermultiplet. We test our derivation by showing that an expansion of our superspace Lagrangian in component fields reproduces the correct gluon MHV vertices.
