Low-frequency wideband timing of InPTA pulsars observed with the uGMRT

High-precision measurements of the pulsar dispersion measure (DM) are possible using telescopes with low-frequency wideband receivers. We present an initial study of the application of the wideband timing technique, which can simultaneously measure the pulsar times of arrival (ToAs) and DMs, for a set of five pulsars observed with the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) as part of the Indian Pulsar Timing Array (InPTA) campaign. We have used the observations with the 300-500 MHz band of the uGMRT for this purpose. We obtain high precision in DM measurements with precisions of the order 10^{-6}cm^{-3}pc. The ToAs obtained have sub-μs precision and the root-mean-square of the post-fit ToA residuals are in the sub-μs range. We find that the uncertainties in the DMs and ToAs obtained with this wideband technique, applied to low-frequency data, are consistent with the results obtained with traditional pulsar timing techniques and comparable to high-frequency results from other PTAs. This work opens up an interesting possibility of using low-frequency wideband observations for precision pulsar timing and gravitational wave detection with similar precision as high-frequency observations used conventionally.

Quasi-stationary sequences of hyper massive neutron stars with exotic equations of state

In this work, we study the effect of differential rotation, finite temperature and strangeness on the quasi stationary sequences of hyper massive neutron stars (HMNS). We generate constant rest mass sequences of differentially rotating and uniformly rotating stars. The nucleonic matter relevant to the star interior is described within the framework of the relativistic mean field model with the DD2 parameter set. We also consider the strange $Λ$ hyperons using the BHB$Λϕ$ equation of state (EoS). Additionally, we probe the behaviour of neutron stars (NS) with these compositions at different temperatures. We report that the addition of hyperons to the EoS produces a significant boost to the spin-up phenomenon. Moreover, increasing the temperature can make the spin-up more robust. We also study the impact of strangeness and thermal effects on the T/W instability. Finally, we analyse equilibrium sequences of a NS following a stable transition from differential rotation to uniform rotation. The decrease in frequency relative to angular momentum loss during this transition is significantly smaller for EoS containing hyperons, compared to nucleonic EoS.

The Magnetar Connection

We investigate the combined evolution of the dipolar surface magnetic field (B$_{s}$) and the spin-period (P$_s$) of known magnetars and high magnetic field (B$_s$ $ \gtrsim 10^{13}$~G) radio pulsars. We study the long term behaviour of these objects assuming a simple ohmic dissipation of the magnetic field. Identifying the regions (in the P$_s$-B$_s$ plane) in which these neutron stars would likely move into, before crossing the death-line to enter the pulsar graveyard, we comment upon the possible connection between the magnetars and other classes of neutron stars.

Temperature dependent appearance of exotic matter makes nascent neutron stars spin faster

Neutron stars offer the opportunity to study the behaviour of matter at densities and temperatures inaccessible to terrestrial experiments. Gravitational-wave observations of binary neutron star coalescences can constrain the neutron-star equation of state before and after merger. After the neutron star binary merges, hyperons can form in the remnant, changing the behaviour of the neutron-star equation of state. In this study, we use finite-entropy equations of state to show that a post-merger remnant can spin up due to cooling. The magnitude of the spin-up depends on the neutron-star equation of state. If hyperons are present, the post-merger spin-up changes the peak gravitational-wave frequency by $\sim 540$ Hz, when the entropy per baryon drops from $s=2$ $k_B$ to $s=0$ $k_B$. If hyperons are not present, the post-merger spin-up changes by $\sim 360$ Hz, providing a gravitational-wave signature for exotic matter. We expect the same qualitative behaviour whenever temperature dependent phase transitions are triggered.

Gravitational waves from r-mode instability of massive young sub- and super-Chandrasekhar white dwarfs

In the present work we investigate the r-mode instability windows, spindown and spindown rates of sub- and super-Chandrasekhar magnetized white dwarfs in presence of Landau quantization of the electron gas and magnetic braking. The gravitational wave strain amplitudes due to r-mode instability is also calculated. The dominant damping mechanism is taken to be the shear viscosity arising due to scattering of the degenerate electrons from the ion liquid. We find that the critical frequencies of Landau quantized magnetized white dwarfs are the lowest, those of non-Landau quantized ones are higher and those of non-magnetized ones are the highest at the same temperature. This implies that magnetic braking and Landau quantization both enhance r-mode instability. We have also seen that there is rapid spindown of magnetized white dwarfs due to additional magnetic braking term but there is no considerable effect of Landau quantization on the spindown and spindown rates for magnetic field strengths relevant for white dwarf interiors. We find that the r-mode gravitational wave strain amplitude for a rapidly rotating super-Chandrasekhar white dwarf at 1 kpc is $\sim 10^{-27}$, making isolated massive rapidly rotating hot magnetized white dwarfs prime candidates for search of gravitational waves in the future.

Signatures of strangeness in neutron star merger remnants

Neutron star (NS) mergers provide us with information rich in physics using multi-messenger astrophysical observations. One of the probable remnants of such a merger is a differentially rotating hot hypermassive neutron star. The stability of the merger remnant depends crucially on the underlying Equation of State (EoS) and thus provides a method to probe the nature of dense matter in NSs. In this work, we search for possible signatures of strangeness containing matter in the NS interior on the secular stability of the merger remnant. We also use recently proposed methods to make a rough estimate the collapse time of the merger remnant and the threshold mass above which the merger promptly collapses to a black hole.

Neutron Star Physics in the Square Kilometer Array Era : An Indian Perspective

It is an exceptionally opportune time for Astrophysics when a number of next-generation mega-instruments are poised to observe the universe across the entire electromagnetic spectrum with unprecedented data quality. The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is undoubtedly one of the major components of this scenario. In particular, the SKA is expected to discover tens of thousands of new neutron stars giving a major fillip to a wide range of scientific investigations. India has a sizeable community of scientists working on different aspects of neutron star physics with immediate access to both the uGMRT (an SKA pathfinder) and the recently launched X-ray observatory Astrosat. The current interests of the community largely centre around studies of - a) the generation of neutron stars and the SNe connection}, b) the neutron star population and evolutionary pathways}, c) the evolution of neutron stars in binaries and the magnetic fields}, d) the neutron star equation of state}, e) the radio pulsar emission mechanism}, and, f) the radio pulsars as probes of gravitational physics}. Most of these studies are the main goals of the SKA first phase, which is likely to be operational in the next four years. This article summarises the science goals of the Indian neutron star community in the SKA era, with significant focus on coordinated efforts among the SKA and other existing/upcoming instruments.

A Comparative study of hyperon equations of state in supernova simulations

A comparative study of the $Λ$ hyperon equations of state of Banik, Hempel and Banyopadhyay (BHB) \citep{bhb} and \citet{shen11} (denoted as HShen $Λ$) for core collapse supernova (CCSN) simulations is carried out in this work. The dynamical evolution of a protoneutron star (PNS) into a black hole is investigated in core collapse supernova simulations in the general relativistic one dimensional code using the BHB$Λϕ$ and HShen $Λ$ equation of state (EoS) tables and different progenitor models from Woosley and Heger \citep{Woos}. Radial profiles of the mass fractions of baryons, the density as well as the temperature in the PNS at different moments in time, are compared for both EoS tables. The behaviour of the central density of the PNS with time is demonstrated for those two $Λ$ hyperon EoS tables and compared with their corresponding nuclear EoS tables. It is observed that the black hole formation time is higher in the BHB$Λϕ$ case than in the HShen $Λ$ EoS for the entire set of progenitor models adopted here, because the repulsive $Λ$-$Λ$ interaction makes the BHB$Λϕ$ EoS stiffer. Neutrino emission with the $Λ$ hyperon EoS ceases earlier than that of its nuclear counterpart. The long duration evolution of the shock radius and gravitational mass of the PNS after a successful supernova explosion with enhanced neutrino heating are studied with the BHB$Λϕ$ EoS and $s$20WH07 progenitor model. The PNS is found to remain stable for 4 s and might evolve into a cold neutron star.

Massive Neutron Stars with Antikaon Condensates in a Density Dependent Hadron Field Theory

The measurement of $1.97 \pm 0.04 M_{solar}$ for PSR J1614-2230 and $2.01 \pm 0.04M_{solar}$ for PSR J0348+0432 puts a strong constraint on the neutron star equation of state and its exotic composition at higher densities. In this paper, we investigate the possibility of exotic equation of state within the observational mass constraint of $2M_{solar}$ in the framework of relativistic mean field model with density-dependent couplings. We particularly study the effect of antikaon condensates in the presence of hyperons on the mass-radius relationship of the neutron star.

New Hyperon Equations of State for Supernovae and Neutron Stars in Density-dependent Hadron Field Theory

We develop new hyperon equation of state (EoS) tables for core-collapse supernova simulations and neutron stars. These EoS tables are based on a density-dependent relativistic hadron field theory where baryon-baryon interaction is mediated by mesons, using the parameter set DD2 from Typel et al. (2010) for nucleons. Furthermore, light and heavy nuclei along with the interacting nucleons are treated in the nuclear statistical equilibrium model of Hempel and Schaffner-Bielich which includes excluded volume effects. Of all possible hyperons, we consider only the contribution of $Λ$s. We have developed two variants of hyperonic EoS tables: in the np$Λϕ$ case the repulsive hyperon-hyperon interaction mediated by the strange $ϕ$ meson is taken into account, and in the np$Λ$ case it is not. The EoS tables for the two cases encompass wide range of density ($10^{-12}$ to $\sim$ 1 fm$^{-3}$), temperature (0.1 to 158.48 MeV), and proton fraction (0.01 to 0.60). The effects of $Λ$ hyperons on thermodynamic quantities such as free energy per baryon, pressure, or entropy per baryon are investigated and found to be significant at high densities. The cold, $β$-equilibrated EoS (with the crust included self-consistently) results in a 2.1 M$_{\odot}$ maximum mass neutron star for the np$Λϕ$ case, whereas that for the np$Λ$ case is 1.95 M$_{\odot}$. The np$Λϕ$ EoS represents the first supernova EoS table involving hyperons that is directly compatible with the recently measured 2 M$_{\odot}$ neutron stars.

Probing the metastability of protoneutron star with hyperon in core-collapse supernova

We investigate the role of hyperons in the dynamical collapse of a non-rotating massive star to a black hole(BH) using one dimensional general relativistic $GR1D$ code. We follow the dynamical formation and evolution of a protoneutron star (PNS) to a black hole using various progenitor models, adopting a hyperonic equation of state (EoS) generated by Shen et. al. We compare the results with those of nuclear EoS by Shen et. al. and understand the role of strange hyperons in the core collapse supernova. We discuss the neutrino signals that may be used as a probe to core collapse. Further, an exotic EoS can support a much lower maximum mass cold neutron star compared to PNS. In this regard, we also study the metastability of PNS in the presence of hyperon in the long-time evolution of the progenitors, relevant to supernova SN1987A.

Kaon and Lambda productions in relativistic heavy ion collisions

A microscopic approach has been employed to study the kaon and $Λ$ productions in heavy ion collisions. The productions of $K^+$ and $Λ$ have been studied within the framework of Boltzmann transport equation for various beam energies. We find a non-monotonic horn like structure for $K^+/π^+$ and $Λ/π$ when plotted against centre of mass energies ($\sqrt s_{\mathrm NN}$) with the assumption of initial partonic phase for $\sqrt s_{\mathrm NN}$ beyond a certain threshold. However, the ratio $K^+/π^+$ shows a monotonic nature when a hadronic initial state is considered for all $\sqrt s_{\mathrm NN}$. Experimental values of $K^-/π^-$ for different $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm NN}}$ are also reproduced within the ambit of the same formalism.

Nucleation of antikaon condensed matter in proto neutron stars

A first order phase transition from nuclear matter to antikaon condensed matter may proceed through thermal nucleation of a critical droplet of antikaon condensed matter during the early evolution of proto neutron stars (PNS). Droplets of new phase having radii larger than a critical radius would survive and grow, if the latent heat is transported from the droplet surface to the metastable phase. We investigate the effect of shear viscosity on the thermal nucleation time of the droplets of antikaon condensed matter. In this connection we particularly study the contribution of neutrinos in the shear viscosity and nucleation in PNS.

Shear viscosity and the nucleation of antikaon condensed matter in protoneutron stars

We study shear viscosities of different species in hot and neutrino-trapped dense matter relevant to protoneutron stars. It is found that the shear viscosities of neutrons, protons and electrons in neutrino-trapped matter are of the same orders of magnitude as the corresponding shear viscosities in neutrino-free matter. Above all, the shear viscosity due to neutrinos is higher by several orders of magnitude than that of other species in neutrino-trapped matter. Next we investigate the effect of shear viscosity in particular, neutrino shear viscosity on the thermal nucleation rate of droplets of antikaon condensed matter in protoneutron stars. The first-order phase transition from hadronic matter to antikaon condensed matter is driven by the thermal nucleation process. We compute the equation of state used for the calculation of shear viscosity and thermal nucleation time within the relativistic mean field model. Neutrino shear viscosity enhances the prefactor in the nucleation rate by several orders of magnitude compared with the $T^4$ approximation of earlier calculations. Consequently the thermal nucleation time in the $T^4$ approximation overestimates our result. Furthermore, the thermal nucleation of an antikaon droplet might be possible in neutrino-trapped matter before neutrino diffusion takes place.

Effect of Shear viscosity on the nucleation of antikaon condensed matter in neutron stars

We investigate a first-order phase transition from hadronic matter to antikaon condensed matter during the cooling stage of protoneutron stars. The phase transition proceeds through the thermal nucleation of antikaon condensed matter. In this connection we study the effect of shear viscosity on the thermal nucleation rate of droplets of antikaon condensed matter. Here we adopt the same equation of state for the calculation of shear viscosity and thermal nucleation time. We compute the shear viscosity of neutron star matter composed of neutrons, protons, electrons and muons using the relativistic mean field model. The prefactor in the nucleation rate which includes the shear viscosity, is enhanced by several orders of magnitude compared with the $T^4$ approximation of earlier calculations. Consequently the thermal nucleation time in the $T^4$ approximation overestimates our result. Further the thermal nucleation of an antikaon droplet might be possible in our case for surface tension smaller than 20 MeV fm$^{-2}$.

The horn in the kaon to pion ratio

A microscopic approach has been employed to study the kaon productions in heavy ion collisions. The momentum integrated Boltzmann equation has been used to study the evolution of strangeness in the system formed in heavy ion collision at relativistic energies. The kaon productions have been calculated for different centre of mass energies ($\sqrt{s_{\mathrm {NN}}}$) ranging from AGS to RHIC. The results have been compared with available experimental data. We obtain a non-monotonic horn like structure for $K^+/π^+$ when plotted with $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm {NN}}}$ with the assumption of an initial partonic phase beyond a certain threshold in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$. However, a monotonic rise of $K^+/π^+$ is observed when a hadronic initial state is assumed for all $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm {NN}}}$. Experimental values of $K^-/π^-$ are also reproduced within the ambit of the same formalism. Results from scenarios where the strange quarks and hadrons are formed in equilibrium and evolves with and without secondary productions have also been presented.

Shear viscosity in antikaon condensed matter

We investigate the shear viscosity of neutron star matter in the presence of an antikaon condensate. The electron and muon number densities are reduced due to the appearance of a $K^-$ condensate in neutron star matter, whereas the proton number density increases. Consequently the shear viscosity due to scatterings of electrons and muons with themselves and protons is lowered compared to the case without the condensate. On the other hand, the contribution of proton-proton collisions to the proton shear viscosity through electromagnetic and strong interactions, becomes important and comparable to the neutron shear viscosity.

Exotica in rotating compact stars

The determination of mass and radius of a single neutron star EXO 0748-676 has been reported recently. Also, the estimate of radius from the measurement of moment of inertia of pulsar A in double pulsar system PSR J0737-3039 would be possible in near future. Here we construct models of static and uniformly rotating neutron stars involving exotic matter and compare our theoretical calculations with the recent findings from observations to probe dense matter in neutron stars.

preprint2004arXiv

Rotating compact stars with exotic matter

We have constructed models of uniformly rotating compact stars including hyperons, Bose-Einstein condensates of antikaons and quarks. First order phase transitions from hadronic to antikaon condensed matter and then to quark matter are considered here. For the equation of state undergoing phase transitions to antikaon condensates, the third family of compact stars are found to exist in the fixed angular velocity sequences. However, the third family solution disappears when the compact stars rotate very fast. For this equation of state, the fixed baryon number supramassive sequence shows a second stable part after the unstable region but no back bending phenomenon. On the other hand, we observe that the rotation gives rise to a second maximum beyond the neutron star maximum for the equation of state involving phase transitions to both antikaon condensed and quark matter. In this case, the back bending phenomenon has been observed in the supramassive sequence as a consequence of the first order phase transition from $K^-$ condensed to quark matter. And the back bending segment contains stable configurations of neutron stars.
