Two-phase free boundary problems in convex domains

We study the regularity of minimizers of a two-phase free boundary problem. For a class of n-dimensional convex domains, we establish the Lipschitz continuity of the minimizer up to the fixed boundary under Neumann boundary conditions. Our proof uses an almost monotonicity formula for the Alt-Caffarelli-Friedman functional restricted to the convex domain. This requires a variant of the classical Friedland-Hayman inequality for geodesically convex subsets of the sphere with Neumann boundary conditions. To apply this inequality, in addition to convexity, we require a Dini condition governing the rate at which the fixed boundary converges to its limit cone at each boundary point.

Existence and Stability Properties of Radial Bound States for Schrödinger-Poisson with an External Coulomb Potential in Three Space Dimensions

We consider radial solutions to the Schrödinger-Poisson system in three dimensions with an external smooth potential with Coulomb-like decay. Such a system can be viewed as a model for the interaction of dark matter with a bright matter background in the non-relativistic limit. We find that there are infinitely many critical points of the Hamiltonian, subject to fixed mass, and that these bifurcate from solutions to the associated linear problem at zero mass. As a result, each branch has a different topological character defined by the number of zeros of the radial states. We construct numerical approximations to these nonlinear states along the first several branches. The solution branches can be continued, numerically, to large mass values, where they become asymptotic, under a rescaling, to those of the Schrödinger-Poisson problem with no external potential. Our numerical computations indicate that the ground state is orbitally stable, while the excited states are linearly unstable for sufficiently large mass.

Asymptotic Stability for KdV Solitons in Weighted $H^s$ Spaces

In this work, we consider the stability of solitons for the KdV equation below the energy space, using spatially-exponentially-weighted norms. Using a combination of the $I$-method and spectral analysis following Pego and Weinstein, we are able to show that, in the exponentially weighted space, the perturbation of a soliton decays exponentially for arbitrarily long times. The finite time restriction is due to a lack of global control of the unweighted perturbation.

Asymptotic Stability for KdV Solitons in Weighted Spaces via Iteration

In this paper, we reconsider the well-known result of Pego-Weinstein \cite{MR1289328} that soliton solutions to the Korteweg-deVries equation are asymptotically stable in exponentially weighted spaces. In this work, we recreate this result in the setting of modern well-posedness function spaces. We obtain asymptotic stability in the exponentially weighted space via an iteration argument. Our purpose here is to lay the groundwork to use the $I$-method to obtain asymptotic stability below $H^1$, which will be done in a second, forthcoming paper \cite{PR}. This will be possible because the exponential approach rate obtained here will defeat the polynomial loss in traditional applications of the $I$-method \cite{MR1995945}, \cite{MR1951312}, \cite{pigottorb}.

Dynamics near a minimal-mass soliton for a Korteweg-de Vries equation

We study soliton solutions to a generalized Korteweg - de Vries (KdV) equation with a saturated nonlinearity, following the line of inquiry of the authors for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS). KdV with such a nonlinearity is known to possess a minimal-mass soliton. We consider a small perturbation of a minimal-mass soliton and identify a system of ODEs, which models the behavior of the perturbation for short times. This connects nicely to a work of Comech, Cuccagna & Pelinovsky (2007). These ODEs form a simple dynamical system with a single unstable hyperbolic fixed point with two possible dynamical outcomes. A particular feature of the dynamics are that they are non-oscillatory. This distinguishes the KdV problem from the analogous NLS one.
