4d $S$-duality wall and $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ relations

In this paper we present various $4d$ $\mathcal{N}=1$ dualities involving theories obtained by gluing two $E[USp(2N)]$ blocks via the gauging of a common $USp(2N)$ symmetry with the addition of $2L$ fundamental matter chiral fields. For $L=0$ in particular the theory has a quantum deformed moduli space with chiral symmetry breaking and its index takes the form of a delta-function. We interpret it as the Identity wall which identifies the two surviving $USp(2N)$ of each $E[USp(2N)]$ block. All the dualities are derived from iterative applications of the Intriligator--Pouliot duality. This plays for us the role of the fundamental duality, from which we derive all others. We then focus on the $3d$ version of our $4d$ dualities, which now involve the $\mathcal{N}=4$ $T[SU(N)]$ quiver theory that is known to correspond to the $3d$ $S$-wall. We show how these $3d$ dualities correspond to the relations $S^2=-1$, $S^{-1}S=1$ and $T^{-1} S T=S^{-1} T S$ for the $S$ and $T$ generators of $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$. These observations lead us to conjecture that $E[USp(2N)]$ can also be interpreted as a $4d$ $S$-wall.

Dualities from dualities: the sequential deconfinement technique

It is an interesting question whether a given infra-red duality between quantum field theories can be explained in terms of other more elementary dualities. For example recently it has been shown that mirror dualities can be obtained by iterative applications of Seiberg-like dualities. In this paper we continue this line of investigation focusing on theories with tensor matter. In such cases one can apply the idea of deconfinement, which consists of trading the tensor matter for extra gauge nodes by means of a suitable elementary duality. This gives an auxiliary dual frame which can then be manipulated with further dualizations, in an iterative procedure eventually yielding an interesting dual description of the original theory. The sequential deconfinement technique has avatars in different areas of mathematical physics, such as the study of hypergeometric and elliptic hypergeometric integral identities or of $2d$ free field correlators. We discuss various examples in the context $4d$ $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric theories, which are related to elliptic hypergeometric integrals. These include a new self-duality involving a quiver theory which exhibits a non-trivial global symmetry enhancement to $E_6$.

3d dualities from 2d free field correlators: recombination and rank stabilization

We propose various new 3d N=2 dualities exploiting their recently discovered connection to the duality relations for 2d free field CFT correlators. Most of the dualities involve, as the main building block, a quiver theory with monopole superpotential which enjoys various interesting properties such as being self-dual and reducing, in a suitable real mass deformation, to the familiar T[SU(N)] theory. In particular we propose a duality for the U(N) theory with one adjoint and k+1 fundamental flavors. By iterating some basic dualities we can bring the theory to a stable form which, in turns, allows us to find a dual frame where the rank of the original theory appears as a parameter.

4d mirror-like dualities

We construct a family of $4d$ $\mathcal{N}=1$ theories that we call $E^σ_ρ[USp(2N)]$ which exhibit a novel type of $4d$ IR duality very reminiscent of the mirror duality enjoyed by the $3d$ $\mathcal{N}=4$ $T^σ_ρ[SU(N)]$ theories. We obtain the $E^σ_ρ[USp(2N)]$ theories from the recently introduced $E[USp(2N)]$ theory, by following the RG flow initiated by vevs labelled by partitions $ρ$ and $σ$ for two operators transforming in the antisymmetric representations of the $USp(2N) \times USp(2N)$ IR symmetries of the $E[USp(2N)]$ theory. These vevs are the $4d$ uplift of the ones we turn on for the moment maps of $T[SU(N)]$ to trigger the flow to $T^σ_ρ[SU(N)]$. Indeed the $E[USp(2N)]$ theory, upon dimensional reduction and suitable real mass deformations, reduces to the $T[SU(N)]$ theory. In order to study the RG flows triggered by the vevs we develop a new strategy based on the duality webs of the $T[SU(N)]$ and $E[USp(2N)]$ theories.

Rank $Q$ E-string on a torus with flux

We discuss compactifications of rank $Q$ E-string theory on a torus with fluxes for abelian subgroups of the $E_8$ global symmetry of the $6d$ SCFT. We argue that the theories corresponding to such tori are built from a simple model we denote as $E[USp(2Q)]$. This model has a variety of non trivial properties. In particular the global symmetry is $USp(2Q)\times USp(2Q)\times U(1)^2$ with one of the two $USp(2Q)$ symmetries emerging in the IR as an enhancement of an $SU(2)^Q$ symmetry of the UV Lagrangian. The $E[USp(2Q)]$ model after dimensional reduction to $3d$ and a subsequent Coulomb branch flow is closely related to the familiar $3d$ $T[SU(Q)]$ theory, the model residing on an S-duality domain wall of $4d$ $\mathcal{N}=4$ $SU(Q)$ SYM. Gluing the $E[USp(2Q)]$ models by gauging the $USp(2Q)$ symmetries with proper admixtures of chiral superfields gives rise to systematic constructions of many examples of $4d$ theories with emergent IR symmetries. We support our claims by various checks involving computations of anomalies and supersymmetric partition functions. Many of the needed identities satisfied by the supersymmetric indices follow directly from recent mathematical results obtained by E. Rains.

From 3d dualities to 2d free field correlators and back

We investigate the relation between 3d N=2 theories and 2d free field correlators or Dotsenko-Fateev (DF) integrals for Liouville CFT. We show that the S^2xS^1 partition functions of some known 3d Seiberg-like dualities reduce, in a suitable 2d limit, to known basic duality identities for DF correlators. These identities are applied in a variety of contexts in CFT, as for example in the derivation of the DOZZ 3-point function. Reversing the logic, we can try to guess new 3d IR dualities which reduce to more intricate duality relations for the DF correlators. For example, we show that a recently proposed duality relating the U(N) theory with one flavor and one adjoint to a WZ model can be regarded as the 3d ancestor of the evaluation formula for the DF integral representation of the 3-point correlator. We are also able to interpret the analytic continuation in the number of screening charges, which is performed on the CFT side to reconstruct the DOZZ 3-point function, as the geometric transition relating the 3d U(N) theory to the 5d T_2 theory.

3d N=2 mirror symmetry, pq-webs and monopole superpotentials

D3 branes stretching between webs of (p,q) 5branes provide an interesting class of 3d N=2 theories. For generic pq-webs however the low energy field theory is not known. We use 3d mirror symmetry and Type IIB S-duality to construct Abelian gauge theories corresponding to D3 branes ending on both sides of a pq-web made of many coincident NS5's intersecting one D5. These theories contain chiral monopole operators in the superpotential and enjoy a non trivial pattern of global symmetry enhancements. In the special case of the pq-web with one D5 and one NS5, the 3d low energy SCFT admits three dual formulations. This triality can be applied locally inside bigger quiver gauge theories. We prove our statements using partial mirror symmetry `a la Kapustin-Strassler, showing the equality of the S^3_b partition functions and studying the quantum chiral rings.

Factorisation and holomorphic blocks in 4d

We study N=1 theories on Hermitian manifolds of the form M^4=S^1xM^3 with M^3 a U(1) fibration over S^2, and their 3d N=2 reductions. These manifolds admit an Heegaard-like decomposition in solid tori D^2xT^2 and D^2xS^1. We prove that when the 4d and 3d anomalies are cancelled the matrix integrands in the Coulomb branch partition functions can be factorised in terms of 1-loop factors on D^2xT^2 and D^2xS^1 respectively. By evaluating the Coulomb branch matrix integrals we show that the 4d and 3d partition functions can be expressed as sums of products of 4d and 3d holomorphic blocks.

5D partition functions, q-Virasoro systems and integrable spin-chains

We analyze N = 1 theories on S5 and S4 x S1, showing how their partition functions can be written in terms of a set of fundamental 5d holomorphic blocks. We demonstrate that, when the 5d mass parameters are analytically continued to suitable values, the S5 and S4 x S1 partition functions degenerate to those for S3 and S2 x S1. We explain this mechanism via the recently proposed correspondence between 5d partition functions and correlators with underlying q-Virasoro symmetry. From the q-Virasoro 3-point functions, we axiomatically derive a set of associated reflection coefficients, and show they can be geometrically interpreted in terms of Harish-Chandra c-functions for quantum symmetric spaces. We then link these particular c-functions to the types appearing in the Jost functions encoding the asymptotics of the scattering in integrable spin chains, obtained taking different limits of the XYZ model to XXZ-type.

3D-partition functions on the sphere: exact evaluation and mirror symmetry

We study N = 4 quiver theories on the three-sphere. We compute partition functions using the localisation method by Kapustin et al. solving exactly the matrix integrals at finite N, as functions of mass and Fayet-Iliopoulos parameters. We find a simple explicit formula for the partition function of the quiver tail T(SU(N)). This formula opens the way for the analysis of star-shaped quivers and their mirrors (that are the Gaiotto-type theories arising from M5 branes on punctured Riemann surfaces). We provide non-perturbative checks of mirror symmetry for infinite classes of theories and find the partition functions of the TN theory, the building block of generalised quiver theories.

Factorisation of N = 2 theories on the squashed 3-sphere

Partition functions of N=2 theories on the squashed 3-sphere have been recently shown to localise to matrix integrals. By explicitly evaluating the matrix integral we show that abelian partition functions can be expressed as a sum of products of two blocks. We identify the first block with the partition function of the vortex theory, with equivariant parameter hbar=2 Pi i b^2, defined on R^2 x S_1 corresponding to the b->0 degeneration of the ellipsoid. The second block gives the partition function of the vortex theory with equivariant parameter hbar^L=2 Pi i/b^2, on the dual R^2 x S_1 corresponding to the 1/b ->0 degeneration. The ellipsoid partition appears to provide the hbar -> hbar^L modular invariant non-perturbative completion of the vortex theory.

A & B model approaches to surface operators and Toda theories

It has recently been argued by Alday et al that the inclusion of surface operators in 4d N=2 SU(2) quiver gauge theories should correspond to insertions of certain degenerate operators in the dual Liouville theory. So far only the insertion of a single surface operator has been treated (in a semi-classical limit). In this paper we study and generalise this proposal. Our approach relies on the use of topological string theory techniques. On the B-model side we show that the effects of multiple surface operator insertions in 4d N=2 gauge theories can be calculated using the B-model topological recursion method, valid beyond the semi-classical limit. On the mirror A-model side we find by explicit computations that the 5d lift of the SU(N) gauge theory partition function in the presence of (one or many) surface operators is equal to an A-model topological string partition function with the insertion of (one or many) toric branes. This is in agreement with an earlier proposal by Gukov. Our A-model results were motivated by and agree with what one obtains by combining the AGT conjecture with the dual interpretation in terms of degenerate operators. The topological string theory approach also opens up new possibilities in the study of 2d Toda field theories.

Borel and Stokes Nonperturbative Phenomena in Topological String Theory and c=1 Matrix Models

We address the nonperturbative structure of topological strings and c=1 matrix models, focusing on understanding the nature of instanton effects alongside with exploring their relation to the large-order behavior of the 1/N expansion. We consider the Gaussian, Penner and Chern-Simons matrix models, together with their holographic duals, the c=1 minimal string at self-dual radius and topological string theory on the resolved conifold. We employ Borel analysis to obtain the exact all-loop multi-instanton corrections to the free energies of the aforementioned models, and show that the leading poles in the Borel plane control the large-order behavior of perturbation theory. We understand the nonperturbative effects in terms of the Schwinger effect and provide a semiclassical picture in terms of eigenvalue tunneling between critical points of the multi-sheeted matrix model effective potentials. In particular, we relate instantons to Stokes phenomena via a hyperasymptotic analysis, providing a smoothing of the nonperturbative ambiguity. Our predictions for the multi-instanton expansions are confirmed within the trans-series set-up, which in the double-scaling limit describes nonperturbative corrections to the Toda equation. Finally, we provide a spacetime realization of our nonperturbative corrections in terms of toric D-brane instantons which, in the double-scaling limit, precisely match D-instanton contributions to c=1 minimal strings.

Large N duality beyond the genus expansion

We study non-perturbative aspects of the large N duality between Chern-Simons theory and topological strings, and we find a rich structure of large N phase transitions in the complex plane of the 't Hooft parameter. These transitions are due to large N instanton effects, and they can be regarded as a deformation of the Stokes phenomenon. Moreover, we show that, for generic values of the 't Hooft coupling, instanton effects are not exponentially suppressed at large N and they correct the genus expansion. This phenomenon was first discovered in the context of matrix models, and we interpret it as a generalization of the oscillatory asymptotics along anti-Stokes lines. In the string dual, the instanton effects can be interpreted as corrections to the saddle string geometry due to discretized neighboring geometries. As a mathematical application, we obtain the 1/N asymptotics of the partition function of Chern-Simons theory on L(2,1), and we test it numerically to high precision in order to exhibit the importance of instanton effects.

The Real Topological Vertex at Work

We develop the real vertex formalism for the computation of the topological string partition function with D-branes and O-planes at the fixed point locus of an anti-holomorphic involution acting non-trivially on the toric diagram of any local toric Calabi-Yau manifold. Our results cover in particular the real vertex with non-trivial fixed leg. We give a careful derivation of the relevant ingredients using duality with Chern-Simons theory on orbifolds. We show that the real vertex can also be interpreted in terms of a statistical model of symmetric crystal melting. Using this latter connection, we also assess the constant map contribution in Calabi-Yau orientifold models. We find that there are no perturbative contributions beyond one-loop, but a non-trivial sum over non-perturbative sectors, which we compare with the non-perturbative contribution to the closed string expansion.

Topological open strings on orbifolds

We use the remodeling approach to the B-model topological string in terms of recursion relations to study open string amplitudes at orbifold points. To this end, we clarify modular properties of the open amplitudes and rewrite them in a form that makes their transformation properties under the modular group manifest. We exemplify this procedure for the C^3/Z_3 orbifold point of local P^2, where we present results for topological string amplitudes for genus zero and up to three holes, and for the one-holed torus. These amplitudes can be understood as generating functions for either open orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants of C^3/Z_3, or correlation functions in the orbifold CFT involving insertions of both bulk and boundary operators.

Topological strings and large N phase transitions II: Chiral expansion of q-deformed Yang-Mills theory

We continue our study of the large N phase transition in q-deformed Yang-Mills theory on the sphere and its role in connecting topological strings to black hole entropy. We study in detail the chiral theory defined in terms of uncoupled single U(N) representations at large N and write down the resulting partition function by means of the topological vertex. The emergent toric geometry has three Kaehler parameters, one of which corresponds to the expected fibration over the sphere. By taking a suitable double-scaling limit we recover the chiral Gross-Taylor string expansion. To analyse the phase transition we construct a matrix model which describes the chiral gauge theory. It has three distinct phases, one of which should be described by the closed topological string expansion. We verify this expectation by explicit comparison between the matrix model and the chiral topological string free energies. We also show that the critical point in the pertinent phase of the matrix model corresponds to a divergence of the topological string perturbation series.
