Number Theory meets Wireless Communications: an introduction for dummies like us

In this chapter we introduce the theory of Diophantine approximation via a series of basic examples from information theory relevant to wireless communications. In particular, we discuss Dirichlet's theorem, badly approximable points, Dirichlet improvable and singular points, the metric (probabilistic) theory of Diophantine approximation including the Khintchine-Groshev theorem and the theory of Diophantine approximation on manifolds. We explore various number theoretic approaches used in the analysis of communication characteristics such as Degrees of Freedom (DoF). In particular, we improve the result of Motahari et al regarding the DoF of a two-user X-channel. In essence, we show that the total DoF can be achieved for all (rather than almost all) choices of channel coefficients with the exception of a subset of strictly smaller dimension than the ambient space. The improvement utilises the concept of jointly non-singular points that we introduce and a general result of Kadyrov et al on the $δ$-escape of mass in the space of lattices. We also discuss follow-up open problems that incorporate a breakthrough of Cheung and more generally Das et al on the dimension of the set of singular points.

Metric Diophantine Approximation: aspects of recent work

In these notes, we begin by recalling aspects of the classical theory of metric Diophantine approximation; such as theorems of Khintchine, Jarn\'ık, Duffin-Schaeffer and Gallagher. We then describe recent strengthening of various classical statements as well as recent developments in the area of Diophantine approximation on manifolds. The latter includes the well approximable, the badly approximable and the inhomogeneous aspects.

Diophantine Approximation and applications in Interference Alignment

This paper is motivated by recent applications of Diophantine approximation in electronics, in particular, in the rapidly developing area of Interference Alignment. Some remarkable advances in this area give substantial credit to the fundamental Khintchine-Groshev Theorem and, in particular, to its far reaching generalisation for submanifolds of a Euclidean space. With a view towards the aforementioned applications, here we introduce and prove quantitative explicit generalisations of the Khintchine-Groshev Theorem for non-degenerate submanifolds of $\mathbb{R}^n$. The importance of such quantitative statements is explicitly discussed in Section 4.7.1 of Jafar's monograph `Interference Alignment - A New Look at Signal Dimensions in a Communication Network', Foundations and Trends in Communications and Information Theory, Vol. 7, no. 1, 2010.

Diophantine approximation on manifolds and the distribution of rational points: contributions to the convergence theory

In this paper we develop the convergence theory of simultaneous, inhomogeneous Diophantine approximation on manifolds. A consequence of our main result is that if the manifold $M \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is of dimension strictly greater than $(n+1)/2$ and satisfies a natural non-degeneracy condition, then $M$ is of Khintchine type for convergence. The key lies in obtaining essentially the best possible upper bound regarding the distribution of rational points near manifolds.

Badly approximable points on planar curves and winning

For any i,j>0 with i+j =1, let Bad(i,j) denote the set of points (x,y) \in R^2 such that max \{ ||qx||^{1/i}, \, ||qy||^{1/j} \} > c/q for some positive constant c = c(x,y) and all q in N. We show that \Bad(i,j) \cap C is winning in the sense of Schmidt games for a large class of planar curves C, namely, everywhere non-degenerate planar curves and straight lines satisfying a natural Diophantine condition. This strengthens recent results solving a problem of Davenport from the sixties. In short, within the context of Davenport's problem, the winning statement is best possible. Furthermore, we obtain the inhomogeneous generalizations of the winning results for planar curves and lines and also show that the inhomogeneous form of Bad(i,j) is winning for two dimensional Schmidt games.

A note on three problems in metric Diophantine approximation

The use of Hausdorff measures and dimension in the theory of Diophantine approximation dates back to the 1920s with the theorems of Jarnik and Besicovitch regarding well-approximable and badly-approximable points. In this paper we consider three inhomogeneous problems that further develop these classical results. Firstly, we obtain a Jarnik type theorem for the set of multiplicatively approximable points in the plane. This Hausdorff measure statement does not reduce to Gallagher's Lebesgue measure statement as one might expect and is new even in the homogeneous setting. Next, we establish a Jarnik type theorem for the set of multiplicatively approximable points on a non-degenerate planar curve. This completes the Hausdorff theory for planar curves. Finally, we show that the set of simultaneously inhomogeneously (i,j)-badly approximable points in the plane is of full dimension. The underlying philosophy behind the proof has other applications; e.g. towards establishing the inhomogeneous version of Schmidt's Conjecture. The higher dimensional analogues of the planar results are also discussed.

Badly approximable points on planar curves and a problem of Davenport

Let C be two times continuously differentiable curve in R^2 with at least one point at which the curvature is non-zero. For any i,j > 0 with i+j =1, let Bad(i,j) denote the set of points (x,y) in R^2 for which max {||qx ||^{1/i}, ||qy||^{1/j}} > c/q for all integers q >0. Here c = c(x,y) is a positive constant. Our main result implies that any finite intersection of such sets with C has full Hausdorff dimension. This provides a solution to a problem of Davenport dating back to the sixties.

Multiplicative zero-one laws and metric number theory

We develop the classical theory of Diophantine approximation without assuming monotonicity or convexity. A complete `multiplicative' zero-one law is established akin to the `simultaneous' zero-one laws of Cassels and Gallagher. As a consequence we are able to establish the analogue of the Duffin-Schaeffer theorem within the multiplicative setup. The key ingredient is the rather simple but nevertheless versatile `cross fibering principle'. In a nutshell it enables us to `lift' zero-one laws to higher dimensions.

Classical metric Diophantine approximation revisited: the Khintchine-Groshev theorem

Under the assumption that the approximating function $ψ$ is monotonic, the classical Khintchine-Groshev theorem provides an elegant probabilistic criterion for the Lebesgue measure of the set of $ψ$-approximable matrices in $\R^{mn}$. The famous Duffin-Schaeffer counterexample shows that the monotonicity assumption on $ψ$ is absolutely necessary when $m=n=1$. On the other hand, it is known that monotonicity is not necessary when $n > 2$ (Sprindzuk) or when $n=1$ and $m>1$ (Gallagher). Surprisingly, when $n=2$ the situation is unresolved. We deal with this remaining case and thereby remove all unnecessary conditions from the classical Khintchine-Groshev theorem. This settles a multi-dimensional analogue of Catlin's Conjecture.

Inhomogeneous theory of dual Diophantine approximation on manifolds

The inhomogeneous Groshev type theory for dual Diophantine approximation on manifolds is developed. In particular, the notion of nice manifolds is introduced and the divergence part of the theory is established for all such manifolds. Our results naturally incorporate and generalize the homogeneous measure and dimension theorems for non-degenerate manifolds established to date. The generality of the inhomogeneous aspect considered within enables us to make a new contribution even to the classical theory in R^n. Furthermore, the multivariable aspect considered within has natural applications beyond the standard inhomogeneous theory such as to Diophantine problems related to approximation by algebraic integers.

Multiplicatively badly approximable numbers and generalised Cantor sets

Let p be a prime number. The p-adic case of the Mixed Littlewood Conjecture states that liminf_{q \to \infty} q . |q|_p . ||q x|| = 0 for all real numbers x. We show that with the additional factor of log q.loglog q the statement is false. Indeed, our main result implies that the set of x for which liminf_{q\to\infty} q . log q . loglog q. |q|_p . ||qx|| > 0 is of full dimension. The result is obtained as an application of a general framework for Cantor sets developed in this paper.

On a problem in simultaneous Diophantine approximation: Schmidt's conjecture

For any $i,j \ge 0$ with $i+j =1$, let $\bad(i,j)$ denote the set of points $(x,y) \in \R^2$ for which $ \max \{\|qx\|^{1/i}, \|qy\|^{1/j} \} > c/q $ for all $ q \in \N $. Here $c = c(x,y)$ is a positive constant. Our main result implies that any finite intersection of such sets has full dimension. This settles a conjecture of Wolfgang M. Schmidt in the theory of simultaneous Diophantine approximation.

The mixed Schmidt conjecture in the theory of Diophantine approximation

Let $\mathcal{D}=(d_n)_{n=1}^\infty$ be a bounded sequence of integers with $d_n\ge 2$ and let $(i, j)$ be a pair of strictly positive numbers with $i+j=1$. We prove that the set of $x \in \RR$ for which there exists some constant $c(x) > 0$ such that \[ \max\{|q|_\DDD^{1/i}, \|qx\|^{1/j}\} > c(x)/ q \qquad \forall q \in \NN \] is one quarter winning (in the sense of Schmidt games). Thus the intersection of any countable number of such sets is of full dimension. In turn, this establishes the natural analogue of Schmidt's conjecture within the framework of the de Mathan-Teulié conjecture -- also known as the `Mixed Littlewood Conjecture'.

Inhomogeneous Diophantine approximation on planar curves

The inhomogeneous metric theory for the set of simultaneously $ψ$-approximable points lying on a planar curve is developed. Our results naturally incorporate the homogeneous Khintchine-Jarnik type theorems recently established in [Ann. of Math. (2), 166 (2007), pp. 367-426] and [Invent. Math., 166 (2006), pp. 103-124]. The key lies in obtaining essentially the best possible results regarding the distribution of `shifted' rational points near planar curves.

An Inhomogeneous Transference Principle and Diophantine Approximation

In a landmark paper, D.Y. Kleinbock and G.A. Margulis established the fundamental Baker-Sprindzuk conjecture on homogeneous Diophantine approximation on manifolds. Subsequently, there has been dramatic progress in this area of research. However, the techniques developed to date do not seem to be applicable to inhomogeneous approximation. Consequently, the theory of inhomogeneous Diophantine approximation on manifolds remains essentially non-existent. In this paper we develop an approach that enables us to transfer homogeneous statements to inhomogeneous ones. This is rather surprising as the inhomogeneous theory contains the homogeneous theory and so is more general. As a consequence, we establish the inhomogeneous analogue of the Baker-Sprindzuk conjecture. Furthermore, we prove a complete inhomogeneous version of the profound theorem of Kleinbock, Lindenstrauss & Weiss on the extremality of friendly measures. The results obtained in this paper constitute the first step towards developing a coherent inhomogeneous theory for manifolds in line with the homogeneous theory.
