Reciprocal relation of Schwinger pair production between $\textrm{dS}_2$ and $\textrm{AdS}_2$

The Klein-Gordon and Dirac equation for a massive charged field in a uniform electric field has a symmetry of two-dimensional global de Sitter (dS) and anti-de Sitter (AdS) space. In the in-out formalism the mean numbers of spinors (spin-1/2 fermions) and scalars (spin-0 bosons) spontaneously produced by the uniform electric field are exactly found from the Bogoliubov relations both in the global and planar coordinates of (A)dS$_2$ space. We show that the uniform electric field enhances the production of charged spinor and scalar pairs in the planar and global dS space while the AdS space reduces the pair production in which weak electric fields below the Breitenlohner-Freedman (BF) bound prohibits pair production. The leading Boltzmann factor in dS space can be written as the Gibbons-Hawking radiation or Schwinger effect enhanced by e-folding factors less than one that give the QED effect or the curvature effect. We observe that dS$_2$ and AdS$_2$ spaces are connected by QED, such as a reciprocal relation between the mean number of spinors and scalars provided that the spacetime curvature is analytically continued. The leading behavior of the mean numbers for spinors and scalars is explained as a residue sum of contour integrals of the frequency or momentum in the phase-integral formulation.

Generalized Gelfand-Dikii equation for fermionic Schwinger pair production

Schwinger pair creation in a purely time-dependent electric field can be reduced to an effective quantum mechanical problem using a variety of formalisms. Here we develop an approach based on the Gelfand-Dikii equation for scalar QED, and on a generalization of that equation for spinor QED. We discuss a number of solvable special cases from this point of view. In previous work, two of the authors had shown for the scalar case how to use the well-known solitonic solutions of the KdV equation to construct Pöschl-Teller like electric fields that do not pair create at some fixed but arbitrary momentum. Here, we present numerical evidence that this construction can be adapted to the fermionic case by a mere change of parameters.

Merger rate of charged black holes from the two-body dynamical capture

We consider the two-body dynamical capture of black holes carrying U(1) charge which can not only correspond to electric or magnetic charge but also have other physical interpretations such as dark or hidden charge. In the low-velocity and weak-field regime, we study gravitational and electromagnetic radiations from point masses with U(1) charges in a hyperbolic orbit, and we develop a formalism to derive the merger rate of charged black holes from the two-body dynamical capture. We apply the formalism to find the effects of the charge-to-mass ratio on the merger rate for possible different cases and discover that the effects depend on the models.

Merger rate distribution of primordial black hole binaries with electric charges

We consider gravitational radiation and electromagnetic radiation from point mass binary with electric charges in a Keplerian orbit, and calculate the merger rate distribution of primordial black hole binaries with charges and a general mass function by taking into account gravitational torque and electromagnetic torque by the nearest primordial black hole. We apply the formalism to the extremal charged case and find that $α=-(m_i+m_j)^2\partial^2 \ln {\cal R}(m_i,m_j)/\partial m_i \partial m_j=12/11$, which is independent of the mass function.

Schwinger Effect from Near-extremal Black Holes in (A)dS Space

We study the Schwinger effect in near-extremal Reissner-Nordström (RN) black holes with electric and/or magnetic charges in the (Anti-) de Sitter (AdS) space. The formula for the Schwinger effect takes a universal form for near-extremal black holes with the near-horizon geometry of ${\rm AdS}_2 \times S^2$ and with the proper radii for the ${\rm AdS}_2$ space and the two-sphere $S^2$, regardless of the asymptotically flat or (A)dS space. The asymptotic AdS boundary enhances and the dS boundary suppresses the Schwinger effect and the small radius of the AdS (dS) space reinforces the enhancement and suppression.

Schwinger Effect in Near-extremal Charged Black Holes in High Dimensions

We study the Schwinger effect in near-extremal nonrotating black holes in an arbitrary $D(\geq 4)$-dimensional asymptotically flat and (A)dS space. Using the near-horizon geometry $\mathrm{AdS}_2 \times \mathrm{S}^{D-2}$ of near-extremal black holes with Myers-Perry metric, we find a universal expression of the emission formula for charges that is a multiplication of the Schwinger effects in an $\mathrm{AdS}_2$ space and in a two-dimensional Rindler space. The effective temperature of an accelerated charge for the Schwinger effect is determined by the radii of the effective $\mathrm{AdS}_2$ space and $\mathrm{S}^{D-2}$ as well as the mass, charge, angular momentum of the charge and the radius of the (A)dS space. The Schwinger effect in the asymptotically flat space is more efficient and persistent for a wide range of large black holes for dimensions higher than four. The AdS (dS) boundary enhances (suppresses) the Schwinger effect than the asymptotically flat space. The Schwinger effect persists for a wide range of black holes in the AdS space and has an upper bound in the dS space.

Simulation of Quantum Universe

Quantum simulation provides quantum systems under study with analogous controllable quantum systems and has wide applications from condensed-matter physics to high energy physics and to cosmology. The quantum system of a homogeneous and isotropic field in the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe can be simulated by a charge in an electrically modulated ion trap. The quantum states of these time-dependent oscillators are constructed by quantum invariants. Further, we propose simulation of quantum Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe with a minimal massive scalar field by a charged scalar field in a homogeneous, time-dependent, magnetic field in quantum electrodynamics and investigate the Cauchy problem of how the wave functions evolve.

Complex Effective Action and Schwinger Effect

Spontaneous pair production from background fields or spacetimes is one of the most prominent phenomena predicted by quantum field theory. The Schwinger mechanism of production of charged pairs by a strong electric field and the Hawking radiation of all species of particles from a black hole are the consequence of nonperturbative quantum effects. In this review article, the vacuum structure and pair production is reviewed in the in-out formalism, which provides a consistent framework for quantum field theory in the sense that the complex action explains not only the vacuum persistence but also pair production. The current technology of intense lasers is still lower by a few order than the Schwinger limit for electron-positron pair production, while magnetic fields of magnetars on the surface are higher than the Schwinger limit and even higher at the core. On the other hand, the zero effective mass of electron and hole in graphene and Dirac or Weyl semimetals will open a window for experimental test of quantum electrodynamics (QED) phenomena in strong fields.

Construction of Exact Ermakov-Pinney Solutions and Time-Dependent Quantum Oscillators

The harmonic oscillator with a time-dependent frequency has a family of linear quantum invariants for the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, which are determined by any two independent solutions to the classical equation of motion. Ermakov and Pinney have shown that a general solution to the time-dependent oscillator with an inverse cubic term can be expressed in terms of two independent solutions to the time-dependent oscillator. We explore the connection between linear quantum invariants and the Ermakov-Pinney solution for the time-dependent harmonic oscillator. We advance a novel method to construct Ermakov-Pinney solutions to a class of time-dependent oscillators and the wave functions for the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. We further show that the first and the second Pöschl-Teller potentials belong to a special class of exact time-dependent oscillators. A perturbation method is proposed for any slowly-varying time-dependent frequency.

Pair Production, Vacuum Polarization and Anomaly in (A)dS and Charged Black Holes

We explore the connection between the distribution of particles spontaneously produced from an electric field or black hole and the vacuum persistence, twice the imaginary part of the one-loop effective action. Employing the reconstruction conjecture, we find the effective action for the Bose-Einstein or Fermi-Dirac distribution. The Schwinger effect in ${\rm AdS}_2$ is computed via the phase-integral method in the static coordinates. The Hawking radiation and Schwinger effect of a charged black hole is rederived and interpreted via the phase-integral. Finally, we discuss the relation between the vacuum persistence and the trace or gravitational anomalies.

Schwinger Effect, Hawking Radiation, and Unruh Effect

We revisit the Schwinger effect in de Sitter, anti-de Sitter spaces and charged black holes, and explore the interplay between quantum electrodynamics and the quantum gravity effect at one-loop level. We then advance a thermal interpretation of the Schwinger effect in curved spacetimes. Finally, we show that the Schwinger effect in a near-extremal black hole differs from Hawking radiation of charged particles in a non-extremal black hole and is factorized into those in an anti-de Sitter space and a Rindler space with the surface gravity for acceleration.

Spin Resonance Effect on Pair Production in Rotating Electric Fields

We advance a new analytical method for the Dirac equation in two-dimensional, homogeneous, time-dependent electric fields, which expresses the Cauchy problem of the two-component spinor and its derivative as the time-ordered integral of the transition rate of the time-dependent eigenspinors and the time-dependent energy eigenvalues. The in-vacuum at later times evolves from that at the past infinity and continuously make transitions between eigenspinors and between positive and negative frequencies of the time-dependent energy eigenvalues. The production of electron and positron pairs is given by the coefficient of the negative frequency at the future infinity which evolves from the positive frequency at the past infinity. In the adiabatic case when the time scale for the rotation of eigenspinors and energy eigenvalues is much longer than the electron Compton time, we find the spin-resonance effect on the pair production, which is simply determined by the spin rotation, the pair production and the continuous transmission coefficients between the energy eigenvalues without the change of spin states.

Will quantum cosmology resurrect chaotic inflation model?

The single field chaotic inflation model with a monomial power greater than one seems to be ruled out by the recent Planck and WMAP CMB data while Starobinsky model with a higher curvature term seems to be a viable model. Higher curvature terms being originated from quantum fluctuations, we revisit the quantum cosmology of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation for the chaotic inflation model. The semiclassical cosmology emerges from quantum cosmology with fluctuations of spacetimes and matter when the wave function is peaked around the semiclassical trajectory with quantum corrections a la the de Broglie-Bohm pilot theory.

On the Vlasov equation for Schwinger pair production in a time-dependent electric field

Schwinger pair creation in a purely time-dependent electric field can be described through a quantum Vlasov equation describing the time evolution of the single-particle momentum distribution function. This equation exists in two versions, both of which can be derived by a Bogoliubov transformation, but whose equivalence is not obvious. For the spinless case, we show here that the difference between these two evolution equations corresponds to the one between the "in-out" and "in-in" formalisms. We give a simple relation between the asymptotic distribution functions generated by the two Vlasov equations. As examples we discuss the Sauter and single-soliton field cases.

Schwinger Effect in (A)dS and Charged Black Hole

In an (Anti-) de Sitter space and a charged black hole the Schwinger effect is either enhanced by the Hawking radiation or suppressed by the negative curvature. We use the contour integral method to calculate the production of charged pairs in the global (A)dS space. The charge emission from near-extremal black hole is found from the AdS geometry near the horizon and interpreted as the Schwinger effect in a Rindler space with the surface gravity for the acceleration as well as the Schwinger effect in AdS space.

Schwinger Effect, Hawking Radiation and Gauge-Gravity Relation

We present a unified picture for the Schwinger effect and the Hawking radiation and address the gauge-gravity relation and the dS-AdS duality issue at the one-loop level. We propose a thermal interpretation for the Schwinger effect in an (A)dS space and in an Reissner-Nordström black hole. The emission of charged particles from the near-extremal charged black hole is proportional to the Schwinger effect in an AdS and to another Schwinger effect in a Rindler space accelerated by the surface gravity.

preprint2015arXiv

Thermal Interpretation of Schwinger Effect in Near-Extremal RN Black Hole

We propose a thermal interpretation of the Schwinger effect for charged scalars and spinors in an extremal and near-extremal Reissner-Nordström (RN) black hole. The emission of charges has the distribution with an effective temperature determined by the Davies-Unruh temperature for accelerating charges by the electric field and the scalar curvature of AdS_2 from the near-horizon geometry AdS_2 X S^2. We find a charge bound for the extremal micro black hole to remain stable against the Schwinger emission in analogy with the Breitenlohlner-Freedman bound for the AdS space. In the in-out formalism we find the one-loop QED effective action consistent with the vacuum persistence and interpret the vacuum persistence as the leading Schwinger effect and the effect of a charged vacuum of the Coulomb field.

Geometric Origin of Pair Production by Electric Field in de Sitter Space

The particle production in a de Sitter space provides an interesting model to understand the curvature effect on Schwinger pair production by a constant electric field or Schwinger mechanism on the de Sitter radiation. For that purpose, we employ the recently introduced complex analysis method, in which the quantum evolution in the complex time explains the pair production via the geometric transition amplitude and gives the pair-production rate as the contour integral. We compare the result by the contour integral with that of the phase-integral method.

One-Loop Effective Action and Schwinger Effect in (Anti-) de Sitter Space

We study the Schwinger mechanism by a uniform electric field in ${\rm dS}_2$ and ${\rm AdS}_2$ and the curvature effect on the Schwinger effect, and further propose a thermal interpretation of the Schwinger formula in terms of the Gibbons-Hawking temperature and the Unruh temperature for an accelerating charge in ${\rm dS}_2$ and an analogous expression in ${\rm AdS}_2$. The exact one-loop effective action is found in the proper-time integral in each space, which is determined by the effective mass, the Maxwell scalar, and the scalar curvature, and whose pole structure gives the imaginary part of the effective action and the exact pair-production rate. The exact pair-production rate is also given the thermal interpretation.

QED Actions in Supercritical Fields

In the in-out formalism we advance a new method to represent the gamma function for QED actions in supercritical fields, which is complementary to the proper-time integral representation in Phys. Rev. D 78, 105013 (2008) and Phys. Rev. D 84, 065004 (2011). The new method directly yields the QED action in terms of the Hurwitz zeta function in a constant magnetic field and the complex QED action in a constant electric field. The complex action exactly gives the vacuum polarization and the vacuum persistence and thereby the pair-production rate in the electric field. The QED actions exhibit the electromagnetic duality.

Second Quantized Scalar QED in Homogeneous Time-Dependent Electromagnetic Fields

We formulate the second quantization of a charged scalar field in homogeneous, time-dependent electromagnetic fields, in which the Hamiltonian is an infinite system of decoupled, time-dependent oscillators for electric fields, but it is another infinite system of coupled, time-dependent oscillators for magnetic fields. We then employ the quantum invariant method to find various quantum states for the charged field. For time-dependent electric fields, a pair of quantum invariant operators for each oscillator with the given momentum plays the role of the time-dependent annihilation and the creation operators, constructs the exact quantum states, and gives the vacuum persistence amplitude as well as the pair-production rate. We also find the quantum invariants for the coupled oscillators for the charged field in time-dependent magnetic fields and advance a perturbation method when the magnetic fields change adiabatically. Finally, the quantum state and the pair production are discussed when a time-dependent electric field is present in parallel to the magnetic field.

Geometric Origin of Stokes Phenomenon for de Sitter Radiation

We propose a geometric interpretation for the Stokes phenomenon in de Sitter spacetime that particles are produced in even dimensions but not in odd dimensions. The scattering amplitude for a quantum field between the in-vacuum and the transported one along a closed path in the complex-time plane gives the particle-production rate that explains not only the Boltzmann factor from the simple pole at infinity, corresponding to the cosmological horizon, but also the sinusoidal behavior from simple poles at the north and south poles of the Euclidean geometry. The Stokes phenomenon is a consequence of interference among four independent closed paths in the complex plane.

Landau Levels of Scalar QED in Time-Dependent Magnetic Fields

The Landau levels of scalar QED undergo continuous transitions under a homogeneous, time-dependent magnetic field. We analytically formulate the Klein-Gordon equation for a charged spinless scalar as a Cauchy initial value problem in the two-component first order formalism and then put forth a measure that classifies the quantum motions into the adiabatic change, the nonadiabatic change, and the sudden change. We find the exact quantum motion and calculate the pair-production rate when the magnetic field suddenly changes as a step function.

New Geometric Transition as Origin of Particle Production in Time-Dependent Backgrounds

By extending the quantum evolution of a scalar field in time-dependent backgrounds to the complex-time plane and transporting the in-vacuum along a closed path, we argue that the geometric transition from the simple pole at infinity determines the multi-pair production depending on the winding number. We apply the geometric transition to Schwinger mechanism in the time-dependent vector potential for a constant electric field and to Gibbons-Hawking particle production in the planar coordinates of a de Sitter space.

Spontaneous Emission of Charged Bosons from Supercritical Point Charges

We study the spontaneous emission of charged bosons from supercritical Coulomb potentials and charged black holes. We find the exact emission rate from the Bogoliubov transformation by applying the tunneling boundary condition on the Jost functions at the asymptotic boundaries. The emission rate for charged bosons in the supercritical Coulomb potential increases as the charge $Zα> 1/2$ of the superatom and the energy of the bosons increase but is suppressed for large angular momenta. We discuss physical implications of the emission of charged bosons from superatoms and charged black holes.

de Sitter Radiation and Backreaction in Quantum Cosmology

We explore the quantum cosmology description of the de Sitter (dS) radiation and its backreaction to dS space, inherent in the wave function of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation for pure gravity with a cosmological constant. We first investigate the quantum Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker cosmological model and then consider possible effects of inhomogeneities of the universe on the dS radiation. In both the cases we obtain the modified Friedmann equation, including the backreaction from spacetime fluctuations, and the quantum-corrected dS temperature. It is shown that the quantum correction increases the dS temperature with the increment characterized by the ratio of the dS scale to the Planck scale.

Non-adiabatic Quantum Vlasov Equation for Schwinger Pair Production

Using Lewis-Riesenfeld theory, we derive an exact non-adiabatic master equation describing the time evolution of the QED Schwinger pair production rate for a general time-varying electric field. This equation can be written equivalently as a first-order matrix equation, as a Vlasov type integral equation, or as a third-order differential equation. In the last version it relates to the KdV equation, which allows us to construct an exact solution using the well-known one-soliton solution to that equation. The case of time-like delta function pulse fields is also shortly considered. We compare with previous approaches to the purely time-dependent field case.

Quantum Dynamics for de Sitter Radiation

We revisit the Hamiltonian formalism for a massive scalar field and study the particle production in a de Sitter space. In the invariant-operator picture the time-dependent annihilation and creation operators are constructed in terms of a complex solution to the classical equation of motion for the field and the Gaussian wave function for each Fourier mode is found which is an exact solution to the Schrödinger equation. The in-out formalism is reformulated by the annihilation and creation operators and the Gaussian wave functions. The de Sitter radiation from the in-out formalism differs from the Gibbons-Hawking radiation in the planar coordinates, and we discuss the discrepancy of the particle production by the two method

Schwinger Pair Production in Pulsed Electric Fields

We numerically investigate the temporal behavior and the structure of longitudinal momentum spectrum and the field polarity effect on pair production in pulsed electric fields in scalar quantum electrodynamics (QED). Using the evolution operator expressed in terms of the particle and antiparticle operators, we find the exact quantum states under the influence of electric pulses and measure the number of pairs of the Minkowski particle and antiparticle. The number of pairs, depending on the configuration of electric pulses, exhibits rich structures in the longitudinal momentum spectrum and undergoes diverse dynamical behaviors at the onset of the interaction but always either converges to a momentum-dependent constant or oscillates around a momentum-dependent time average after the completion of fields.

Spontaneous Pair Production in Reissner-Nordstrom Black Holes

We investigate the spontaneous pair production, including the Schwinger mechanism and the Hawking thermal radiation, of charged scalar particles from the near horizon region of a (near) extremal Reissner-Nordström black hole. The paradigm is equivalent to the dynamics of the charged scalar field in a specific AdS$_2 \times S^2$ spacetime with a constant electric field. Two possible boundary conditions are adopted to explicitly compute the corresponding production rate and absorption cross section. It is shown that the Schwinger production rate can be eventually suppressed by the increasing attractive gravitational force as the geometry changes from the extremal to the near extremal black hole. Consequently, the Schwinger mechanism and the Hawking radiation are generically indistinguishable for the near extremal black holes. The holographic description dual to the pair production is also briefly discussed.

Third Quantization and Quantum Universes

We study the third quantization of the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmology with $N$-minimal massless fields. The third quantized Hamiltonian for the WDW equation in the minisuperspace consists of infinite number of intrinsic time-dependent, decoupled oscillators. The Hamiltonian has a pair of invariant operators for each universe with conserved momenta of the fields that play a role of the annihilation and the creation operators and that construct various quantum states for the universe. The closed universe exhibits an interesting feature of transitions from stable states to tachyonic states depending on the conserved momenta of the fields. In the classical forbidden unstable regime, the quantum states have googolplex growing position and conjugate momentum dispersions, which defy any measurements of the position of the universe.

Probing the Vacuum Structure of Spacetime

We explore the question of how to probe the vacuum structure of space time by a massive scalar field through interaction with background gravitons. Using the $Γ$-regularization for the in-/out-state formalism, we find the effective action of a scalar field in a conformally, asymptotically flat spacetime and a four-dimensional de Sitter space, which is a gravitational analog of the Heisenberg-Euler and Schwinger effective action for a charged scalar in a constant electric field. The effective action is nonperturbative in that it sums all one-loop diagrams with arbitrary number of external lines of gravitons. The massive scalar field becomes unstable due to particle production, the effective action has an imaginary part that determines the decay rate of the vacuum, and the out-vacuum is unitarily inequivalent to the in-vacuum.

QED Effective Action in Magnetic Field Backgrounds and Electromagnetic Duality

In the in-out formalism we advance a method of the inverse scattering matrix for calculating effective actions in pure magnetic field backgrounds. The one-loop effective actions are found in a localized magnetic field of Sauter type and approximately in a general magnetic field by applying the uniform semiclassical approximation. The effective actions exhibit the electromagnetic duality between a constant electric field and a constant magnetic field and between $E(x) = E sech^2 (x/L)$ and $B(x) = B sech^2 (x/L)$.

QED Effective Actions in Space-Dependent Gauge and Electromagnetic Duality

We develop the in-out formalism for one-loop effective actions in electromagnetic fields in the space-dependent gauge. We further advance a method using the inverse scattering matrix to calculate the effective actions in pure magnetic fields, find the effective actions in a constant magnetic field and a localized Sauter-type magnetic field and apply the uniform semiclassical approximation to the effective action in a general magnetic field. In the in-out formalism we show that the one-loop effective actions in constant fields and Sauter-type fields exhibit the electromagnetic duality.

Schwinger mechanism in dS_2 and AdS_2 revisited

Recalculating the Bogoliubov coefficients from the solutions in Phys. Rev. D 78, 103517 (2008), we obtain the mean number of boson pairs in a uniform electric field in the global coordinates dS_2 and AdS_2, which have the correct zero-field and zero-curvature limits, and study the vacuum persistence at one-loop. The mean number in AdS_2 gives the lowest limit to the Breitenloher-Freedman bound in the uniform electric field, and the mean numbers in dS_2 and AdS_2 satisfy the reciprocal relation N_{dS} (R, E) N_{AdS} (R, E) = 1 under the analytical continuation of the scalar curvature R.

Schwinger Pair Production in Solitonic Gauge Fields

We study the time-dependent solitonic gauge fields in scalar QED, in which a charged particle has the energy of reflectionless Pösch-Teller potential with natural quantum numbers. Solving the quantum master equation for quadratic correlation functions, we find the exact pair-production rates as polynomials of inverse square of hyperbolic cosine, which exhibit solitonic characteristics of a finite total pair production per unit volume and a non-oscillatory behavior for the entire period, and an exponentially decaying factor in asymptotic regions. It is shown that the solitonic gauge fields are the simplest solutions of the quantum master equation and that the back-reaction of the produced pairs does not destabilize the solitonic gauge fields.

Effective Action of QED in Electric Field Backgrounds II: Spatially Localized Fields

We find the Bogoliubov coefficient from the tunneling boundary condition on a charged particle coupled to a static electric field $E_0 sech^2 (z/L)$ and, using the regularization scheme in Phys. Rev. D 78, 105013 (2008), obtain the exact one-loop effective action in scalar and spinor QED. It is shown that the effective action satisfies the general relation between the vacuum persistence and the mean number of produced pairs. We advance an approximation method for general electric fields and show the duality between the space-dependent and time-dependent electric fields of the same form at the leading order of the effective actions.

Information-Theoretic Uncertainty Relation and Random-Phase Entropy

Dunkel and Trigger [Phys. Rev. A {71}, 052102 (2005)] show that the Leipnik's joint entropy monotonously increases for the initially maximally classical Gaussian wave packet for a free particle. After expressing the joint entropy of the general Gaussian wave packets for quadratic Hamiltonians as $S (t) = ln (e/2) + ln (2 Delta x (t) Delta p (t)/hbar)$, we show that a class of general Gaussian wave packets does not warrant the monotonous increase of the joint entropy. We propose that the random-phase entropy with respect to the squeeze angle always monotonously increases even for non-maximally classical states.

Nonperturbative QED Effective Action at Finite Temperature

We advance a novel method for the finite-temperature effective action for nonequilibrium quantum fields and find the QED effective action in time-dependent electric fields, where charged pairs evolve out of equilibrium. The imaginary part of the effective action consists of thermal loops of the Fermi-Dirac or Bose-Einstein distribution for the initial thermal ensemble weighted with factors for vacuum fluctuations. And the real part of the effective action is determined by the mean number of produced pairs, vacuum polarization, and thermal distribution. The mean number of produced pairs is equal to twice the imaginary part. We explicitly find the finite-temperature effective action in a constant electric field.

The Stokes Phenomenon and Quantum Tunneling for de Sitter Radiation in Nonstationary Coordinates

We study quantum tunneling for the de Sitter radiation in the planar coordinates and global coordinates, which are nonstationary coordinates and describe the expanding geometry. Using the phase-integral approximation for the Hamilton-Jacobi action in the complex plane of time, we obtain the particle-production rate in both coordinates and derive the additional sinusoidal factor depending on the dimensionality of spacetime and the quantum number for spherical harmonics in the global coordinates. This approach resolves the factor of two problem in the tunneling method.

Vacuum Structure of de Sitter Space

In the in-/out-state formalism we find the exact one-loop effective action of a massive scalar field in the global coordinates of de Sitter spaces, which is a gravity analog of the Heisenberg-Euler action in QED. The nonperturbative effective action, modulo the angular momentum sum, has an imaginary part in all even dimensions, but the imaginary part of the effective action is zero in all odd dimensions. However, in the zeta-function regularization for angular momenta, the weak-curvature expansion of the renormalized effective action vanishes in any even dimension, while the real part is finite in any odd dimension. This implies that de Sitter spaces may be stable against particle production at one-loop.

Effective Action and Schwinger Pair Production in Strong QED

Some field theoretical aspects, such as the effective action and Schwinger pair production, are critically reviewed in strong QED. The difference of the boundary conditions on the solutions of the field equation is discussed to result in the effective action both in the Coulomb and time-dependent gauge. Finally, the apparent spin-statistics inversion is also discussed, where the WKB action for bosons (fermions) works well for fermion (boson) pair-production rate.

Spacetime structure of 5D hypercylindrical vacuum solutions with tension

We investigate geometrical properties of 5D cylindrical vacuum solutions with a transverse spherical symmetry. The metric is uniform along the fifth direction and characterized by tension and mass densities. The solutions are classified by the tension-to-mass ratio. One particular example is the well-known Schwarzschild black string which has a curvature singularity enclosed by a horizon. We focus mainly on geometry of other solutions which possess a naked singularity. The light signal emitted by an object approaching the singularity reaches a distant observer with finite time, but is infinitely red-shifted.

Schwinger Mechanism and Hawking Radiation as Quantum Tunneling

The common interpretation of the Hawking radiation as quantum tunneling has some ambiguity such as coordinate-dependence of tunneling rate and non-invariance of the action under canonical transformations. Entropy Production and Thermodynamic Arrow of Time in a Recollapsing Universe

We investigate the thermodynamic arrow of time in a time-symmetrically recollapsing universe by calculating quantum mechanically the entropy production of a massive scalar field. It is found that even though the Hamiltonian has a time-reversal symmetry with respect to the maximum expansion of the universe, the entropy production is generic and the total entropy of the scalar field increases monotonically. We conclude that the thermodynamic arrow of time is a universal phenomenon even in the expanding and subsequently recollapsing universe due to the parametric interaction of matter field with gravity.

The simple poles in the S-matrix occur in the Euclidean spacetime, and the Euclidean Wheeler-DeWitt equation is a variant of the Calogero models, which is discussed in connection with conformal mechanics and a quantum instanton.

Nonequilibrium Quantum Evolution of Open Systems

We apply the Liouville-von Neumann (LvN) approach to open systems to describe the nonequilibrium quantum evolution. The Liouville-von Neumann approach is a unified method that can be applied to both time-independent (closed) and time-dependent (open) systems and to both equilibrium and nonequilibrium systems. We study the nonequilibrium quantum evolution of oscillator models for open boson and fermion systems

Factorization and q-Deformed Algebra of Quantum Anharmonic Oscillator

We have studied the underlying algebraic structure of the anharmonic oscillator by using the variational perturbation theory. To the first order of the variational perturbation, the Hamiltonian is found to be factorized into a supersymmetric form in terms of the annihilation and creation operators, which satisfy a q-deformed algebra. This algebraic structure is used to construct all the eigenstates of the Hamiltonian.

Problem of Unitarity and Quantum Corrections in Semiclassical Quantum Gravity

Using both the Born-Oppenheimer idea and the de Broglie-Bohm interpretation of wavefunction we represent in a different way the semiclassical quantum gravity from the Wheeler-DeWitt equation in an oscillating regime which can preserve completely the unitary quantum evolution of a matter field at the expense of a nonlinear gravitational field equation, but has the same asymptotic limit as the others. We apply the de Broglie-Bohm interpretation to the nonlinear gravitational field equation to develop a perturbation method to find the quantum corrections of a matter field to the gravity. The semiclassical Einstein equation with the quantum corrections is found for a minimal quantum FRW cosmological model.

Coherent State Representation of Semiclassical Quantum Gravity

We elaborate the recently introduced asymptotically exact semiclassical quantum gravity derived from the Wheeler-DeWitt equation by finding a particular coherent state representation of a quantum scalar field in which the back-reaction of the scalar field Hamiltonian exactly gives rise to the classical one. In this coherent state representation classical spacetime emerges naturally from semiclassical quantum gravity.

Renormalized Thermodynamic Entropy of Black Holes in Higher Dimensions

We study the ultraviolet divergent structures of the matter (scalar) field in a higher D-dimensional Reissner-Nordström black hole and compute the matter field contribution to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy by using the Pauli-Villars regularization method. We find that the matter field contribution to the black hole entropy does not, in general, yield the correct renormalization of the gravitational coupling constants. In particular we show that the matter field contribution in odd dimensions does not give the term proportional to the area of the black hole event horizon.

New Asymptotic Expanstion Method for the Wheeler-DeWitt Equation

A new asymptotic expansion method is developed to separate the Wheeler-DeWitt equation into the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for a matter field and the Einstein-Hamilton-Jacobi equation for the gravitational field including the quantum back-reaction of the matter field. In particular, the nonadiabatic basis of the generalized invariant for the matter field Hamiltonian separates the Wheeler-DeWitt equation completely in the asymptotic limit of $m_p^2$ approaching infinity. The higher order quantum corrections of the gravity to the matter field are found. The new asymptotic expansion method is valid throughout all regions of superspace compared with other expansion methods with a certain limited region of validity. We apply the new asymptotic expansion method to the minimal FRW universe.
