Implications of the CP asymmetry in semileptonic B decay

Recent experimental searches for $A_{SL}$, the CP asymmetry in semileptonic B decay, have reached an accuracy of order one percent. Consequently, they give meaningful constraints on new physics. We find that cancellations between the Standard Model (SM) and new physics contributions to $B^0 - \bar B^0$ mixing cannot be as strong as was allowed prior to these measurements. The predictions for this asymmetry within the SM and within models of minimal flavor violation (MFV) are below the reach of present and near future measurements. Including order $m_c^2/m_b^2$ and $Λ_{QCD}/m_b$ corrections we obtain the SM prediction: $-1.3 \times 10^{-3} < A_{SL} < -0.5 \times 10^{-3}$. Future measurements can exclude not only the SM, but MFV as well, if the sign of the asymmetry is opposite to the SM or if it is same-sign but much enhanced. We also comment on the CP asymmetry in semileptonic $B_s$ decay, and update the range of the angle $β_s$ in the SM: $0.026 < \sin2β_s < 0.048$.

CP Violation and the Absence of Second Class Currents in Charmless B Decays

The absence of second class currents together with the assumption of factorization for non-leptonic B decays provide new constraints on CP observables in decay B to a0(980)(to eta pi) pi. The kinematics of this decay do not allow interference between the oppositely charged resonances in the Dalitz plot as in B0 to rho(770)pi. Nonetheless, under the assumption of factorization, the a0pi two-body time-dependent isospin analysis leads to a more robust extraction of the angle alpha than in the rhopi isospin-pentagon analysis. The absence of second class currents might lead to enhanced direct CP violation and/or allows for a test of some assumptions made in the alpha analysis in other decays like B to a0rho, B to b1(1235)pi, B to a0 a0, B to eta(eta')pipi and B to b1 a0. The effects from non-factorizable contributions on the determination of alpha are estimated by means of a numerical study.
