CMB from CFT

During inflation, spacetime is approximately described by de Sitter space which is conformally invariant with the symmetry group SO(1,4). This symmetry can significantly constrain the quantum perturbations which arise in the inflationary epoch. We consider a general situation of single field inflation and show that the three point function involving two scalar modes and one tensor mode is uniquely determined, up to small corrections, by the conformal symmetries. Special conformal transformations play an important role in our analysis. Our result applies only to models where the inflaton sector also approximately preserves the full conformal group and shows that this three point function is a good way to test if special conformal invariance was preserved during inflation.

Some Examples of Chiral Moduli Spaces and Dynamical Supersymmetry Breaking

We investigate the low-energy dynamics of $SU(N)$ gauge theories with one antisymmetric tensor field, $N - 4 + N_f$ antifundamentals and $N_f$ fundamentals, for $N_f \le 3$. For $N_f = 3$ we construct the quantum moduli space, and for $N_f < 3$ we find the exact quantum superpotentials. We find two large classes of models with dynamical supersymmetry breaking. The odd $N$ theories break supersymmetry once appropriate mass terms are added in the superpotential. The even $N$ theories break supersymmetry after gauging an extra chiral $U(1)$ symmetry.

Gluon fragmentation into polarized charmonium

Gluon fragmentation to $\chicJ(1P)$ followed by single photon emission represents the dominant source of prompt $J/Ψ$'s at the Tevatron for $p_\perp \gtap 6 \GeV$. Since fragmenting gluons are approximately transverse, their products are significantly polarized. We find that gluon fragmentation populates the helicity levels of $\chione$, $\chitwo$ and $J/Ψ$ according to $D_{\chione^{(h=0)}}: D_{\chione^{(|h|=1)}} \simeq 1:1$, $D_{\chitwo^{(h=0)}} : D_{\chitwo^{(|h|=1)}} : D_{\chitwo^{(|h|=2)}} \simeq 1:2.9:6.0$ and $D_{\J^{(h=0)}} : D_{\J^{(|h|=1)}} \simeq 1:3.4$. We also speculate that gluon fragmentation to the radially excited $\chitwo(2P)$ state followed by subsequent radiative decay could represent a large source of $ψ'(2S)$'s and potentially resolve the $ψ'$ deficit problem. A measurement of these states' polarizations would test this idea.
