Finite higher spin transformations from exponentiation

We study the exponentiation of elements of the gauge Lie algebras ${\rm hs}(λ)$ of three-dimensional higher spin theories. Exponentiable elements generate one-parameter groups of finite higher spin symmetries. We show that elements of ${\rm hs}(λ)$ in a dense set are exponentiable, when pictured in certain representations of ${\rm hs}(λ)$, induced from representations of $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ in the complementary series. We also provide a geometric picture of higher spin gauge transformations clarifying the physical origin of these representations. This allows us to construct an infinite-dimensional topological group $HS(λ)$ of finite higher spin symmetries. Interestingly, this construction is possible only for $0 \leq λ\leq 1$, which are the values for which the higher spin theory is believed to be unitary and for which the Gaberdiel-Gopakumar duality holds. We exponentiate explicitly various commutative subalgebras of ${\rm hs}(λ)$. Among those, we identify families of elements of ${\rm hs}(λ)$ exponentiating to the unit of $HS(λ)$, generalizing the logarithms of the holonomies of BTZ black hole connections. Our techniques are generalizable to the Lie algebras relevant to higher spin theories in dimensions above three.

The global anomaly of the self-dual field in general backgrounds

We prove a formula for the global gravitational anomaly of the self-dual field theory in the presence of background gauge fields, assuming the results of arXiv:1110.4639. Along the way, we also clarify various points about the self-dual field theory. In particular, we give a general definition of the theta characteristic entering its partition function and settle the issue of its possible metric dependence. We treat the cohomological version of type IIB supergravity as an example of the formalism: a mixed gauge-gravitational global anomaly, occurring when the B-field and Ramond-Ramond 2-form gauge fields have non-trivial Wilson lines, cancels provided a certain cobordism group vanishes.

Global gravitational anomaly cancellation for five-branes

We show that the global mixed gauge-gravitational anomaly of the worldvolume theory of the M5-brane vanishes, when the anomaly inflow from the bulk is taken into account. This result extends to the type IIA and heterotic $E_8 \times E_8$ five-branes. As a by-product, we provide a definition of the chiral fermionic fields for generic non-spin M5-brane worldvolume and determine the coupling between the self-dual field and the M-theory C-field.

The global anomalies of (2,0) superconformal field theories in six dimensions

We compute the global gauge and gravitational anomalies of the A-type (2,0) superconformal quantum field theories in six dimensions, and conjecture a formula valid for the D- and E-type theories. We show that the anomaly contains terms that do not contribute to the local anomaly but that are crucial for the consistency of the global anomaly. A side result is an intuitive picture for the appearance of Hopf-Wess-Zumino terms on the Coulomb branch of the (2,0) theories.

The anomaly line bundle of the self-dual field theory

In this work, we determine explicitly the anomaly line bundle of the abelian self-dual field theory over the space of metrics modulo diffeomorphisms, including its torsion part. Inspired by the work of Belov and Moore, we propose a non-covariant action principle for a pair of Euclidean self-dual fields on a generic oriented Riemannian manifold. The corresponding path integral allows to study the global properties of the partition function over the space of metrics modulo diffeomorphisms. We show that the anomaly bundle for a pair of self-dual fields differs from the determinant bundle of the Dirac operator coupled to chiral spinors by a flat bundle that is not trivial if the underlying manifold has middle-degree cohomology, and whose holonomies are determined explicitly. We briefly sketch the relevance of this result for the computation of the global gravitational anomaly of the self-dual field theory, that will appear in another paper.

The global gravitational anomaly of the self-dual field theory

We derive a formula for the global gravitational anomaly of the self-dual field theory on an arbitrary compact oriented Riemannian manifold. Along the way, we uncover interesting links between the theory of determinant line bundles of Dirac operators, Siegel theta functions and a functor constructed by Hopkins and Singer. We apply our result to type IIB supergravity and show that in the naive approximation where the Ramond-Ramond fields are treated as differential cohomology classes, the global gravitational anomaly vanishes on all 10-dimensional spin manifolds. We sketch a few other important physical applications.

Geometric quantization and the metric dependence of the self-dual field theory

We investigate the metric dependence of the partition function of the self-dual p-form gauge field on an arbitrary Riemannian manifold. Using geometric quantization of the space of middle-dimensional forms, we derive a projectively flat connection on its space of polarizations. This connection governs metric dependence of the partition function of the self-dual field. We show that the dependence is essentially given by the Cheeger half-torsion of the underlying manifold. We compute the local gravitational anomaly and show how our derivation relates to the classical computation based on index theory. As an application, we show that the one-loop determinant of the (2,0) multiplet on a Calabi-Yau threefold coincides with the square root of the one-loop determinant of the B-model.

Defect loops in gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten models

We consider loop observables in gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten models, and study the action of renormalization group flows on them. In the WZW model based on a compact Lie group G, we analyze at the classical level how the space of renormalizable defects is reduced upon the imposition of global and affine symmetries. We identify families of loop observables which are invariant with respect to an affine symmetry corresponding to a subgroup H of G, and show that they descend to gauge-invariant defects in the gauged model based on G/H. We study the flows acting on these families perturbatively, and quantize the fixed points of the flows exactly. From their action on boundary states, we present a derivation of the "generalized Affleck-Ludwig rule, which describes a large class of boundary renormalization group flows in rational conformal field theories.

New WZW D-branes from the algebra of Wilson loop operators

We investigate the algebra generated by the topological Wilson loop operators in WZW models. Wilson loops describe the nontrivial fixed points of the boundary renormalization group flows triggered by Kondo perturbations. Their enveloping algebra therefore encodes all the fixed points which can be reached by sequences of Kondo flows. This algebra is easily described in the case of SU(2), but displays a very rich structure for higher rank groups. In the latter case, its action on known D-branes creates a profusion of new and generically non-rational D-branes. We describe their symmetries and the geometry of their worldvolumes. We briefly explain how to extend these results to coset models.

D-branes in Lie groups of rank > 1

We consider a low-energy effective action for the gauge field on Wess-Zumino-Witten D-branes in a compact simple Lie group, in the limit of large k. We prove that the effective action is bounded from below, and study stability of various D-brane configurations, including some class of non-maximally symmetric ones. We show that for Lie groups of rank higher than one, the D-brane ground state breaks the Kac-Moody symmetry of the boundary theory. We then give arguments hinting that the "fuzzy sphere" D2-brane which is known to be the stable brane configuration in the case of SU(2), may also correspond to the ground state in other compact simple Lie groups.
