The low degree cohomology of compactifications of AgA_g

We compute the low degree ℓ\ell-adic intersection cohomology of symplectic local systems on the Satake compactification of the moduli space AgA_g of principally polarized abelian varieties. We prove that only a small finite list of irreducible Galois representations can appear in the low degree cohomology of any nonsingular toroidal compactification of AgA_g or Xg,sX_{g,s}, the ss-fold fiber product of the universal abelian variety. We give several applications, including to spaces of holomorphic forms on toroidal compactifications and to the cohomology of the interior. In particular, we give a complete characterization of when the cohomology of Xg,sX_{g,s}, or one of its toroidal compactifications, is of Tate type. The result is independent of the choice of toroidal compactification.

The rational Chow rings of moduli spaces of hyperelliptic curves with marked points

We determine the rational Chow ring of the moduli space Hg,n\mathcal{H}_{g,n} of nn-pointed smooth hyperelliptic curves of genus gg when n≤2g+6n \leq 2g+6. We also show that the Chow ring of the partial compactification Ig,n\mathcal{I}_{g,n}, parametrizing nn-pointed irreducible nodal hyperelliptic curves, is generated by tautological divisors. Along the way, we improve Casnati's result that Hg,n\mathcal{H}_{g,n} is rational for n≤2g+8n \leq 2g+8 to show Hg,n\mathcal{H}_{g,n} is rational for n≤3g+5n \leq 3g+5.

On a Conjecture on the Variety of Lines on a Fano Complete Intersection

The Debarre-de Jong conjecture predicts that the Fano variety of lines on a smooth Fano hypersurface in Pn\mathbb{P}^n is always of the expected dimension. We generalize this conjecture to the case of Fano complete intersections and prove that for a Fano complete intersection X⊂PnX\subset \mathbb{P}^n of hypersurfaces whose degrees sum to at most 7, the Fano variety of lines on XX has the expected dimension.
