Growth Dynamics of S. aureus with Sugars and Sugar Alcohols in Weak Magnetic Fields

We study the effects of weak magnetic fields (around 2 mT) on the growth of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) in the presence of a few sweeteners (monosaccharides, disaccharides, sugar alcohols, and consumer-grade sweeteners). Bacterial growth rates were compared in various magnetic fields at room temperature. Bacterial growth was estimated using optical absorbance measurements at various wavelengths, and pH values were manually estimated using pH strips. Absorbance was measured at 492 nm and 630 nm, which are wavelengths comparable to the size of a cell of S. aureus after division. This comparability plays a vital role in the scale of measured absorbance values. The results imply that bacterial growth may be reduced due to acidic byproducts formed by metabolizing sugars or sugar alcohols, as an increasingly acidic solution is less ideal for bacterial growth. Magnetic fields were also found to have a minor effect on pH estimates. These results reveal potential effects on microorganisms in the presence of sugars and sugar alcohols in addition to weak magnetic fields, demonstrating the contribution of various environmental conditions with increasing prevalence in the modern day.

Comparative Study of Magnetic Moment of Leptons in Hot and Dense Media

We study the magnetic moment of leptons in extremely hot universe and superdense media of stars at high temperatures. Anomalous magnetic moment of charged leptons is inversely proportional to its mass, whereas, the induced dipole moment of neutral leptons is directly proportional to their mass. Neutral massive point particles exert nonzero magnetic moment as a higher order effect, which is smaller than the anomalous magnetic moment of a charged particle of their same flavor partner. All leptons acquire some extra mass due to their interaction with the medium and affect the magnetic moment accordingly. We compare the contribution to the magnetic moment of various leptons due to their temperature and chemical potential dependent masses. It is shown that the magnetic moment contributions are non-ignorable for lighter leptons and heavy neutrinos. These calculations are very important to study particle propagation in the early universe and in superdense stellar media.

Current Trends in Physics Enrollment

We analyze the current trends in higher education and discuss its impact on physics enrollment in US institutions. The pandemic, lockdowns, unemployment, and healthcare problems have led to unique social and economic conditions. These conditions have modified the latest trends in education. COVID-19 has had great impact on the academic culture due to online teaching and learning methods. We identify some of the key factors including economic problems, changes in job market, modifications in family obligations, physical and mental health conditions, and overall insecurity and uncertainty in life. These key factors are causing a shift in educational preferences. A few recommendations are made to get out of the current dilemma. We use all the data collected by the American Physical Society statistics department [1].

Equation of state of fermions in neutron stars

Employing both the number density and energy density, the equation of state of fermions for each microscopic region of a neutron star is derived in the presence of various statistical effects. It is computed as functions of temperature (T), chemical potential (μ) and magnetic field (B) based on the statistical properties and corresponding phases of neutron stars. It is revealed that the measurable properties describing the dynamic behavior of a neutron star are determined by the unusual statistical conditions. It is demonstrated that, in a strong magnetic field (B larger thanμ), the pressure (P) shows a logarithmic dependence on B (P is proportional to logarithm of(μ/B). It is found that the regions with a higher (lower) magnetic field (density) have a shorter (longer) life time. Moreover, the relationship between the magnetic field and chemical potential confirms that the large magnetic field and high density are short lived as compared to low magnetic field and low density at the same temperature.

Growth Rate of Staphylococcus Aureus in weak magnetic field

A comparative study of the growth of S.aureus in different types of weak magnetic field shows that the growth of the bacteria is initially suppressed after inoculation in a new medium and then increased in the same pattern with or without magnetic field. However, the rate of growth and death of bacteria depend on the variation in the magnetic field for comparable strength. Magnetic field effect on the ionic motion plays a key role in the growth rate. It is shown that the concentration of bacteria reduces initially and then it starts increasing after some time. Multiplication and death of bacterial cells is related to its interaction with the nutrients which is managed by the magnetic field direction, strength and variation at room temperature.

QED Plasma at Extremely High Temperature and Density

We use the renormalization scheme of QED (Quantum Electrodynamics) in real-time formalism to calculate the effective parameters of the theory, indicating the existence of relativistic QED plasma at extremely high temperatures and extremely high densities. High-density plasma is found inside the stellar cores and high temperature QED plasma could only exist, right after the neutrino decoupling temperature in the early universe, before the nucleosynthesis is complete. Radiation couples with the medium through the vacuum polarization in a hot and dense medium. Calculating the vacuum polarization tensor in a medium, the effect of radiation on matter is investigated in such a medium. We explicitly compute the parameters of QED plasma such as plasma frequency, Debye shielding length and the propagation frequency in terms of temperature and density of the superhot and superdense medium, respectively. This study helps to understand short term existence of QED plasma in the superhot and superdense systems.

Electromagnetic Properties of a Hot and Dense Medium

We study the properties of an electromagnetically interacting medium in the presence of high concentration of electrons at extremely high temperatures and chemical potentials. We show that the electromagnetic properties of a medium such as the electric permittivity, magnetic permeability, magnetic moments and the propagation speed of electromagnetic waves as well as the corresponding particle processes depend on temperature and density of the medium. Electromagnetic properties of neutrinos are significantly modified due to their interactions with electrons when they propagate through such a medium of hot and dense electrons.
