Absolute neutrino mass scale and dark matter stability from flavour symmetry

We explore a simple but extremely predictive extension of the scotogenic model. We promote the scotogenic symmetry $\mathbb{Z}_2$ to the flavour non-Abelian symmetry $Σ(81)$, which can also automatically protect dark matter stability. In addition, $Σ(81)$ leads to striking predictions in the lepton sector: only Inverted Ordering is realised, the absolute neutrino mass scale is predicted to be $m_\text{lightest} \approx 7.5 \times 10^{-4}$ eV and the Majorana phases are correlated in such a way that $|m_{ee}| \approx 0.018$ eV. The model also leads to a strong correlation between the solar mixing angle $θ_{12}$ and $δ_{CP}$, which may be falsified by the next generation of neutrino oscillation experiments. The setup is minimal in the sense that no additional symmetries or flavons are required.

Gravitational wave induced baryon acoustic oscillations

We study the impact of gravitational waves originating from a first order phase transition on structure formation. To do so, we perform a second order perturbation analysis in the $1+3$ covariant framework and derive a wave equation in which second order, adiabatic density perturbations of the photon-baryon fluid are sourced by the gravitational wave energy density during radiation domination and on sub-horizon scales. The scale on which such waves affect the energy density perturbation spectrum is found to be proportional to the horizon size at the time of the phase transition times its inverse duration. Consequently, structure of the size of galaxies and bigger can only be affected in this way by relatively late phase transitions at $\ge 10^{6}\,\text{s}$. Using cosmic variance as a bound we derive limits on the strength $α$ and the relative duration $(β/H_*)^{-1}$ of phase transitions as functions of the time of their occurrence which results in a new exclusion region for the energy density in gravitational waves today. We find that the cosmic variance bound forbids only relative long lasting phase transitions, e.g. $β/H_*\lesssim 6.8$ for $t_*\approx 5\times10^{11}\,\text{s}$, which exhibit a substantial amount of supercooling $α>20$ to affect the matter power spectrum.

Dark matter stability and Dirac neutrinos using only Standard Model symmetries

We provide a generic framework to obtain stable dark matter along with naturally small Dirac neutrino masses generated at the loop level. This is achieved through the spontaneous breaking of the global $U(1)_{B-L}$ symmetry already present in Standard Model. The $U(1)_{B-L}$ symmetry is broken down to a residual even $\mathcal{Z}_n$; $n \geq 4$ subgroup. The residual $\mathcal{Z}_n$ symmetry simultaneously guarantees dark matter stability and protects the Dirac nature of neutrinos. The $U(1)_{B-L}$ symmetry in our setup is anomaly free and can also be gauged in a straightforward way. Finally, we present an explicit example using our framework to show the idea in action.

Natural axion model from flavour

We explore a common symmetrical origin for two long standing problems in particle physics: the strong CP and the fermion mass hierarchy problems. The Peccei--Quinn mechanism solves the former one with an anomalous global $U(1)_{\rm PQ}$ symmetry. Here we investigate how this $U(1)_{\rm PQ}$ could at the same time explain the fermion mass hierarchy. We work in the context of a four-Higgs-doublet model which explains all quark and charged fermion masses with natural, i.e.\ order $1$, Yukawa couplings. Moreover, the axion of the model constitutes a viable dark matter candidate and neutrino masses are incorporated via the standard type-I seesaw mechanism. A simple extension of the model allows for Dirac neutrinos.

Scotogenic Dark Symmetry as a residual subgroup of Standard Model Symmetries

We show that the scotogenic dark symmetry can be obtained as a residual subgroup of the global $U(1)_{B-L}$ symmetry already present in Standard Model. We propose a general framework where the $U(1)_{B-L}$ symmetry is spontaneously broken to an even $\mathcal{Z}_{2n}$ subgroup, setting the general conditions for neutrinos to be Majorana and the dark matter stability in terms of the residual $\mathcal{Z}_{2n}$. Under this general framework, as examples, we build a class of simple models where, in the scotogenic spirit, the dark matter candidate is the lightest particle running inside the neutrino mass loop. The global $U(1)_{B-L}$ symmetry in our framework being anomaly free can also be gauged in a straightforward manner leading to a richer phenomenology.

CP Violation from Flavor Symmetry in a Lepton Quarticity Dark Matter Model

We propose a simple $Δ(27) \otimes Z_4$ model where neutrinos are predicted to be Dirac fermions. The smallness of their masses follows from a type-I seesaw mechanism and the leptonic CP violating phase correlates with the pattern of $Δ(27)$ flavor symmetry breaking. The scheme naturally harbors a WIMP dark matter candidate associated to the Dirac nature of neutrinos, in that the same $Z_4$ lepton number symmetry also ensures dark matter stability.
