Beyond Endoscopy via the trace formula - II: Asymptotic expansions of Fourier transforms and bounds towards the Ramanujan conjecture

We continue the analysis of the elliptic part of the trace formula initiated in \cite{Altug:2015aa}. In that reference Poisson summation was applied to the elliptic part and the dominant term was analyzed. The main aim of this paper is to study the remaining terms after Poisson summation. We analyze the the Fourier transforms of (smoothed) orbital integrals and obtain exact asymptotic expansions. As an application we recover, using the Arthur-Selberg trace formula, Kuznetsov's result (cf. \cite{Kuznetsov:1980aa}) that the trace of the $p$th Hecke operator on cuspidal automorphic representations is bounded by $p^{\frac14}$.

Beyond Endoscopy via the trace formula - III: The standard representation

We finalize the analysis of the trace formula initiated in \cite{Altug:2015aa} and developed in \cite{Altug:2015ab}, and calculate the asymptotic expansion of the beyond endoscopic averages for the standard $L$-functions attached to weight $k\geq3$ cusp forms on $GL(2)$ (cf. Theorem \ref{mainthm}). This, in particular, constitutes the first example of beyond endoscopy executed via the Arthur-Selberg trace formula, as originally proposed in \cite{Langlands:2004aa}. As an application we also give a new proof of the analytic continuation of the $L$-function attached to Ramanujan's $Δ$-function.

Beyond Endoscopy via the Trace Formula-I: Poisson Summation and Contributions of Special Representations

With analytic applications in mind, in particular Beyond Endoscopy ([13]), we initiate the study of the elliptic part of the trace formula. Incorporating the approximate functional equation to the elliptic part we control the analytic behavior of the volumes of tori that appear in the elliptic part. Furthermore by carefully choosing the truncation parameter in the approximate functional equation we smooth-out the singularities of orbital integrals. Finally by an application of Poisson summation we rewrite the elliptic part so that it is ready to be used in analytic applications, and in particular in Beyond Endoscopy. As a by product we also isolate the contributions of special representations as pointed out in [13].

Elliptic curves, random matrices and orbital integrals

An isogeny class of elliptic curves over a finite field is determined by a quadratic Weil polynomial. Gekeler has given a product formula, in terms of congruence considerations involving that polynomial, for the size of such an isogeny class. In this paper, we give a new, transparent proof of this formula; it turns out that this product actually computes an adelic orbital integral which visibly counts the desired cardinality. This answers a question posed by N. Katz.
