Connections and naïve lifting of DG modules

In this paper, we generalize the notion of connections, which was introduced by Alain Connes in noncommutative differential geometry, to the differential graded (DG) homological algebra setting. Then, along a DG algebra homomorphism $A \to B$, where $B$ is assumed to be projective as an underlying graded $A$-module, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for a semifree DG $B$-module to be naïvely liftable to $A$ in terms of connections.

Semi-fiber products of algebras and lifting of complexes

Let $k$ be a field. In this paper, we define the notion of semi-fiber products of commutative $k$-algebras and show that the class of such rings contains several classes of commutative rings, including that of the fiber products of local $k$-algebras over their common residue field $k$. For a noetherian local $k$-algebra $R$ and an ideal $I$ of $R$, under certain conditions, we characterize the liftability of $k$ along the natural surjection $R\twoheadrightarrow R/I$ in terms of retractions, sections, and the existence of semi-fiber product decompositions of $R$.

Naive liftings of DG modules

Let n be a positive integer, and let A be a strongly commutative differential graded (DG) algebra over a commutative ring R. Assume that (a) B=A[X_1,...,X_n] is a polynomial extension of A, where X_1,...,X_n are variables of positive degrees; or (b) A is a divided power DG R-algebra and B=A<X_1,...,X_n> is a free extension of A obtained by adjunction of variables X_1,...,X_n of positive degrees. In this paper, we study naive liftability of DG modules along the natural injection A-->B using the notions of diagonal ideals and homotopy limits. We prove that if N is a bounded below semifree DG B-module such that Ext_B^i(N, N)=0 for all i>0, then N is naively liftable to A. This implies that N is a direct summand of a DG B-module that is liftable to A. Also, the relation between naive liftability of DG modules and the Auslander-Reiten Conjecture has been described.

Local rings with quasi-decomposable maximal ideal

Let $(R,\frak m)$ be a commutative noetherian local ring. In this paper, we prove that if $\frak m$ is decomposable, then for any finitely generated $R$-module $M$ of infinite projective dimension $\frak m$ is a direct summand of (a direct sum of) syzygies of $M$. Applying this result to the case where $\frak m$ is quasi-decomposable, we obtain several classfications of subcategories, including a complete classification of the thick subcategories of the singularity category of $R$.

Determinants of incidence and Hessian matrices arising from the vector space lattice

Let $\mathcal{V}=\bigsqcup_{i=0}^n\mathcal{V}_i$ be the lattice of subspaces of the $n$-dimensional vector space over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ and let $\mathcal{A}$ be the graded Gorenstein algebra defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ which has $\mathcal{V}$ as a $\mathbb{Q}$ basis. Let $F$ be the Macaulay dual generator for $\mathcal{A}$. We compute explicitly the Hessian determinant $|\frac{\partial ^2F}{\partial X_i \partial X_j}|$ evaluated at the point $X_1 = X_2 = \cdots = X_N=1$ and relate it to the determinant of the incidence matrix between $\mathcal{V}_1$ and $\mathcal{V}_{n-1}$. Our exploration is motivated by the fact that both of these matrices arise naturally in the study of the Sperner property of the lattice and the Lefschetz property for the graded Artinian Gorenstein algebra associated to it.

Extension Groups for DG Modules

Let $M$ and $N$ be differential graded (DG) modules over a positively graded commutative DG algebra $A$. We show that the Ext-groups $\operatorname{Ext}^i_A(M,N)$ defined in terms of semi-projective resolutions are not in general isomorphic to the Yoneda Ext-groups $\operatorname{YExt}^i_A(M,N)$ given in terms of equivalence classes of extensions. On the other hand, we show that these groups are isomorphic when the first DG module is semi-projective.

Vanishing of Ext and Tor over fiber products

Consider a non-trivial fiber product $R=S\times_kT$ of local rings $S$, $T$ with common residue field $k$. Given two finitely generate $R$-modules $M$ and $N$, we show that if $\operatorname{Tor}^R_i(M,N)=0=\operatorname{Tor}^R_{i+1}(M,N)$ for some $i\geq 5$, then $\operatorname{pd}_R(M)\leq 1$ or $\operatorname{pd}_R(N)\leq 1$. From this, we deduce several consequence, for instance, that $R$ satisfies the Auslander-Reiten Conjecture.

Homology over trivial extensions of commutative DG algebras

Conditions on the Koszul complex of a noetherian local ring $R$ guarantee that $\mathrm{Tor}^{R}_{i}(M,N)$ is non-zero for infinitely many $i$, when $M$ and $N$ are finitely generated $R$-modules of infinite projective dimension. These conditions are obtained from results concerning Tor of differential graded modules over certain trivial extensions of commutative differential graded algebras.

Cohen Factorizations: Weak Functoriality and Applications

We investigate Cohen factorizations of local ring homomorphisms from three perspectives. First, we prove a "weak functoriality" result for Cohen factorizations: certain morphisms of local ring homomorphisms induce morphisms of Cohen factorizations. Second, we use Cohen factorizations to study the properties of local ring homomorphisms (Gorenstein, Cohen-Macaulay, etc.) in certain commutative diagrams. Third, we use Cohen factorizations to investigate the structure of quasi-deformations of local rings, with an eye on the question of the behavior of CI-dimension in short exact sequences.
