Spatial Curvature at the Sound Horizon

The effect of spatial curvature on primordial perturbations is controlled by $ Ω_{K,0}/c_{s}^{2} $, where $ Ω_{K,0} $ is today's fractional density of spatial curvature and $ c_{s} $ is the speed of sound during inflation. Here we study these effects in the limit $ c_{s}\ll 1 $. First, we show that the standard cosmological soft theorems in flat universes are violated in curved universes and the soft limits of correlators can have non-universal contributions even in single-clock inflation. This is a consequence of the fact that, in the presence of spatial curvature, there is a gap between the spectrum of residual diffeomorphisms and that of physical modes. Second, there are curvature corrections to primordial correlators, which are not scale invariant. We provide explicit formulae for these corrections to the power spectrum and the bispectrum to linear order in curvature in single-clock inflation. We show that the large-scale CMB anisotropies could provide interesting new constraints on these curvature effects, and therefore on $ Ω_{K,0}/c_{s}^{2} $, but it is necessary to go beyond our linear-order treatment.

Symmetric Scalars

We provide a complete classification of Poincaré-invariant scalar field theories with an enlarged set of classical symmetries to leading order in derivatives, namely for the so-called $P(X,ϕ)$ theories, in two or more spacetime dimensions. We find only three possibilities: Dirac-Born-Infeld, Cuscuton and Scaling theories. The latter two classes of actions involve an arbitrary function of the scalar field. As an application, we use the scaling symmetry to derive an infinite set of constraints on the Wilsonian coefficients of the low-energy Effective Field Theory. Furthermore, we study the extension of these results to cosmological (FLRW) and (Anti-)de Sitter spacetimes. We find in particular that the Cuscuton action has a generic set of symmetries around any background spacetime that possesses Killing vector fields, while the DBI actions have well-known analogues that we summarize explicitly.

Ghost inflation and de Sitter entropy

In the setup of ghost condensation model the generalized second law of black hole thermodynamics can be respected under a radiatively stable assumption that couplings between the field responsible for ghost condensate and matter fields such as those in the Standard Model are suppressed by the Planck scale. Since not only black holes but also cosmology are expected to play important roles towards our better understanding of gravity, we consider a cosmological setup to test the theory of ghost condensation. In particular we shall show that the de Sitter entropy bound proposed by Arkani-Hamed, et.al. is satisfied if ghost inflation happened in the early epoch of our universe and if there remains a tiny positive cosmological constant in the future infinity. We then propose a notion of cosmological Page time after inflation.

Effective Field Theory of non-Attractor Inflation

We present the model-independent studies of non attractor inflation in the context of effective field theory (EFT) of inflation. Within the EFT approach two independent branches of non-attractor inflation solutions are discovered in which a near scale-invariant curvature perturbation power spectrum is generated from the interplay between the variation of sound speed and the second slow roll parameter η. The first branch captures and extends the previously studied models of non-attractor inflation in which the curvature perturbation is not frozen on super-horizon scales and the single field non-Gaussianity consistency condition is violated. We present the general expression for the amplitude of local-type non-Gaussianity in this branch. The second branch is new in which the curvature perturbation is frozen on super-horizon scales and the single field non-Gaussianity consistency condition does hold in the squeezed limit. Depending on the model parameters, the shape of bispectrum in this branch changes from an equilateral configuration to a folded configuration while the amplitude of non-Gaussianity is less than unity.

Inflationary power asymmetry from primordial domain walls

We study the asymmetric primordial fluctuations in a model of inflation in which translational invariance is broken by a domain wall. We calculate the corrections to the power spectrum of curvature perturbations; they are anisotropic and contain dipole, quadrupole, and higher multipoles with non-trivial scale-dependent amplitudes. Inspired by observations of these multipole asymmetries in terms of two-point correlations and variance in real space, we demonstrate that this model can explain the observed anomalous power asymmetry of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) sky, including its characteristic feature that the dipole dominates over higher multipoles. We test the viability of the model and place approximate constraints on its parameters by using observational values of dipole, quadrupole, and octopole amplitudes of the asymmetry measured by a local-variance estimator. We find that a configuration of the model in which the CMB sphere does not intersect the domain wall during inflation provides a good fit to the data. We further derive analytic expressions for the corrections to the CMB temperature covariance matrix, or angular power spectra, which can be used in future statistical analysis of the model in spherical harmonic space.
