Upgrade of the CMS Resistive Plate Chambers for the High Luminosity LHC

During the upcoming High Luminosity phase of the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC), the integrated luminosity of the accelerator will increase to 3000 fb$^{-1}$. The expected experimental conditions in that period in terms of background rates, event pileup, and the probable aging of the current detectors present a challenge for all the existing experiments at the LHC, including the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment. To ensure a highly performing muon system for this period, several upgrades of the Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) system of the CMS are currently being implemented. These include the replacement of the readout system for the present system, and the installation of two new RPC stations with improved chamber and front-end electronics designs. The current overall status of this CMS RPC upgrade project is presented.

High Rate RPC detector for LHC

The High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) phase is designed to increase by an order of magnitude the amount of data to be collected by the LHC experiments. The foreseen gradual increase of the instantaneous luminosity of up to more than twice its nominal value of $10\times10^{34}\ {\rm cm}^{-1}{\rm s}^{-2}$ during Phase I and Phase II of the LHC running, presents special challenges for the experiments. The region with high pseudo rapidity ($η$) region of the forward muon spectrometer ($2.4 > |η| > 1.9$) is not equipped with RPC stations. The increase of the expected particles rate up to 2 kHz cm$^{-1}$ ( including a safety factor 3 ) motivates the installation of RPC chambers to guarantee redundancy with the CSC chambers already present. The current CMS RPC technology cannot sustain the expected background level. A new generation of Glass-RPC (GRPC) using low-resistivity glass was proposed to equip the two most far away of the four high $η$ muon stations of CMS. In their single-gap version they can stand rates of few kHz cm$^{-1}$. Their time precision of about 1 ns can allow to reduce the noise contribution leading to an improvement of the trigger rate. The proposed design for large size chambers is examined and some preliminary results obtained during beam tests at Gamma Irradiation Facility (GIF++) and Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) at CERN are shown. They were performed to validate the capability of such detectors to support high irradiation environment with limited consequence on their efficiency.

High rate, fast timing Glass RPC for the high η CMS muon detectors

The HL-LHC phase is designed to increase by an order of magnitude the amount of data to be collected by the LHC experiments. To achieve this goal in a reasonable time scale the instantaneous luminosity would also increase by an order of magnitude up to $6.10^{34} cm^{-2} s^{-1}$ . The region of the forward muon spectrometer ($|η| > 1.6$) is not equipped with RPC stations. The increase of the expected particles rate up to $2 kHz/cm^{2}$ (including a safety factor 3) motivates the installation of RPC chambers to guarantee redundancy with the CSC chambers already present. The actual RPC technology of CMS cannot sustain the expected background level. The new technology that will be chosen should have a high rate capability and provides a good spatial and timing resolution. A new generation of Glass-RPC (GRPC) using low-resistivity (LR) glass is proposed to equip at least the two most far away of the four high $η$ muon stations of CMS. First the design of small size prototypes and studies of their performance in high-rate particles flux is presented. Then the proposed designs for large size chambers and their fast-timing electronic readout are examined and preliminary results are provided.

Performance of Resistive Plate Chambers installed during the first long shutdown of the CMS experiment

The CMS experiment, located at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, has a redundant muon system composed by three different detector technologies: Cathode Strip Chambers (in the forward regions), Drift Tubes (in the central region) and Resistive Plate Chambers (both its central and forward regions). All three are used for muon reconstruction and triggering. During the first long shutdown (LS1) of the LHC (2013-2014) the CMS muon system has been upgraded with 144 newly installed RPCs on the forth forward stations. The new chambers ensure and enhance the muon trigger efficiency in the high luminosity conditions of the LHC Run2. The chambers have been successfully installed and commissioned. The system has been run successfully and experimental data has been collected and analyzed. The performance results of the newly installed RPCs will be presented.

R&D towards the CMS RPC Phase-2 upgrade

The high pseudo-rapidity region of the CMS muon system is covered by Cathode Strip Chambers (CSC) only and lacks redundant coverage despite the fact that it is a challenging region for muons in terms of backgrounds and momentum resolution. In order to maintain good efficiency for the muon trigger in this region additional RPCs are planned to be installed in the two outermost stations at low angle named RE3/1 and RE4/1. These stations will use RPCs with finer granularity and good timing resolution to mitigate background effects and to increase the redundancy of the system.

Physics at the e+ e- Linear Collider

A comprehensive review of physics at an e+e- Linear Collider in the energy range of sqrt{s}=92 GeV--3 TeV is presented in view of recent and expected LHC results, experiments from low energy as well as astroparticle physics. The report focuses in particular on Higgs boson, Top quark and electroweak precision physics, but also discusses several models of beyond the Standard Model physics such as Supersymmetry, little Higgs models and extra gauge bosons. The connection to cosmology has been analyzed as well.

Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 3. Higgs Properties

This Report summarizes the results of the activities in 2012 and the first half of 2013 of the LHC Higgs Cross Section Working Group. The main goal of the working group was to present the state of the art of Higgs Physics at the LHC, integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. This report follows the first working group report Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 1. Inclusive Observables (CERN-2011-002) and the second working group report Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 2. Differential Distributions (CERN-2012-002). After the discovery of a Higgs boson at the LHC in mid-2012 this report focuses on refined prediction of Standard Model (SM) Higgs phenomenology around the experimentally observed value of 125-126 GeV, refined predictions for heavy SM-like Higgs bosons as well as predictions in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and first steps to go beyond these models. The other main focus is on the extraction of the characteristics and properties of the newly discovered particle such as couplings to SM particles, spin and CP-quantum numbers etc.

Multiple Higgs-Portal and Gauge-Kinetic Mixings

We develop a phenomenological formalism for mixing effects between the Standard Model and hidden-sector fields, motivated by dark matter in the Universe as well as string theories. The scheme includes multiple Higgs-portal interactions in the scalar sector as well as multiple gauge-kinetic mixings in the abelian gauge sector. While some of the mixing effects can be cast in closed form, other elements can be controlled analytically only by means of perturbative expansions in the ratio of standard scales over large hidden scales. Higgs and vector-boson masses and mixings are illustrated numerically for characteristic processes.

Theoretical Basis of Higgs-Spin Analysis in $H \to γγ$ and $Zγ$ Decays

We chart the theoretical basis of radiative decays of the Higgs boson, $H \to γγ$ and $Zγ$, for measuring the spin of the Higgs particle. These decay channels are complementary to other rare modes such as real/virtual $Z$-boson pair-decays. In systematic helicity analyses the angular distribution for zero-spin is confronted with hypothetical spin-$2^\pm$ and higher assignments to quantify the sensitivity.

Dirac Neutralinos and Electroweak Scalar Bosons of N=1/N=2 Hybrid Supersymmetry at Colliders

In the N=1 supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model, neutralinos associated in supermultiplets with the neutral electroweak gauge and Higgs bosons are, as well as gluinos, Majorana fermions. They can be paired with the Majorana fermions of novel gaugino/scalar supermultiplets, as suggested by extended N=2 supersymmetry, to Dirac particles. Matter fields are not extended beyond the standard N=1 supermultiplets in N=1/N=2 hybrid supersymmetry to preserve the chiral character of the theory. Complementing earlier analyses in the color sector, central elements of such an electroweak scenario are analyzed in the present study. The decay properties of the Dirac fermions and of the scalar bosons are worked out, and the single and pair production channels of the new particles are described for proton collisions at the LHC, and electron/positron and photon-photon collisions at linear colliders. Special attention is paid to modifications of the Higgs sector, identified with an N=2 hypermultiplet, by the mixing with the novel electroweak scalar sector.

Isolated Lepton Events at HERA: SUSY R-Parity Violation?

Events with an isolated high $p_T$ lepton, a hadron jet and missing energy as observed in the H1 experiment at HERA, are potentially associated with R-parity violation in supersymmetric theories. However, stringent kinematic constraints must be fulfilled if the production of supersymmetric particles in R-parity violating scenarios were the correct path for explaining these puzzling events. A reference point \RF is specified for which these constraints are illustrated and implications of the supersymmetric interpretation for new classes of multi-lepton events are indicated.

Heavy Higgs Resonances for the Neutralino Relic Density in the Higgs Decoupling Limit of the CP--noninvariant Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model

The lightest neutralino is a compelling candidate to account for cold dark matter in the universe in supersymmetric theories with $R$--parity. In the CP-invariant theory, the neutralino relic density can be found in accord with recent WMAP data if neutralino annihilation in the early universe occurs via the s-channel $A$ funnel. In contrast, in the CP-noninvariant theory two heavy neutral Higgs bosons can contribute to the Higgs funnel mechanism significantly due to a CP-violating {\it complex} mixing between two heavy states, in particular, when they are almost degenerate. With a simple analytic and numerical analysis, we demonstrate that the CP-violating Higgs mixing can modify the profile of the neutralino relic density {\it considerably} in the heavy Higgs funnel with the neutralino mass close to half of the heavy Higgs masses.

Determining tan(beta) in ττFusion to SUSY Higgs Bosons at a Photon Collider

We investigate ττfusion to light h and heavy H and A Higgs bosons in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) at a photon collider as a promising channel for measuring large values of tan(beta). For standard design parameters of a photon collider an error Δtan(beta) \sim 1, uniformly for tan(beta) \gsim 10, may be expected, improving on complementary measurements at the LHC and e+e- linear colliders.

Analysis of the Neutralino System in Supersymmetric Theories

Charginos $\tildeχ^\pm$ and neutralinos $\tildeχ^0$ in supersymmetric theories can be produced copiously at $e^+e^-$ colliders and their properties can be measured with high accuracy. Consecutively to the chargino system, in which the SU(2) gaugino parameter $M_2$, the higgsino mass parameter $μ$ and $\tanβ$ can be determined, the remaining fundamental supersymmetry parameter in the gaugino/higgsino sector of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model, the U(1) gaugino mass $M_1$, can be analyzed in the neutralino system, including its modulus and its phase in CP-noninvariant theories. The CP properties of the neutralino system are characterized by unitarity quadrangles. Analytical solutions for the neutralino mass eigenvalues and for the mixing matrix are presented for CP-noninvariant theories in general. They can be written in compact form for large supersymmetric mass parameters. The closure of the neutralino and chargino systems can be studied by exploiting sum rules for the pair-production processes in $e^+e^-$ collisions. Thus the picture of the non-colored gaugino and higgsino complex in supersymmetric theories can comprehensively be reconstructed in these experiments.

CP Violation in Tau Slepton Pair Production at Muon Colliders

We discuss in detail signals for CP violation in the Higgs boson and tau-slepton sectors through the production processes $μ^+μ^- \to \tildeτ_i^- \tildeτ_j^+$, where $i,j=1,2$ label the two $τ$ slepton mass eigenstates in the minimal supersymmetric standard model. We assume that the soft breaking parameters of third generation sfermions contain CP violating phases, which induce CP violation in the Higgs sector through quantum corrections. We classify all the observables for probing CP violation in the Higgs boson and $τ$ slepton sectors. These observables depend on the initial muon beam polarization, where we include transverse polarization states. If the heavy Higgs bosons can decay into tau slepton pairs, a complete determination of the CP properties of the neutral Higgs boson and $τ$--slepton systems is possible. The interference between the Higgs boson and gauge boson contributions could also provide a powerful method for probing CP violation, if transversely polarized muon beams are available. We show in detail how to directly measure CP violation in the tau slepton system, under the assumption that the neutral Higgs mixing angles are determined through the on--shell production of the neutral Higgs bosons.

Higgs Boson Decays in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with Radiative Higgs Sector CP Violation

We re-evaluate the decays of the Higgs bosons in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) where the tree-level CP invariance of the Higgs potential is explicitly broken by the loop effects of the third-generation squarks with CP-violating soft-breaking Yukawa interactions. This study is based on the mass matrix of the neutral Higgs bosons that is valid for arbitrary values of all the relevant MSSM parameters. It extends the previous work considerably by including neutral Higgs-boson decays into virtual gauge bosons and those into top-squark pairs, by implementing squark-loop contributions to the two-gluon decay channel, and by incorporating the decays of the charged Higgs boson. The constraints from the electron electric dipole moment on the CP phases are also discussed. We find that the branching fractions of both the neutral and charged Higgs-boson decays and their total decay widths depend strongly on the CP phases of the top (and bottom) squark sectors through the loop-induced neutral Higgs boson mixing as well as the direct couplings of the neutral Higgs bosons to top squark pairs.

Neutralino-Nucleus Elastic Cross Section in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with Explicit CP Violation

We study the elastic scattering of the lightest neutralino with a nucleus in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) with explicit flavor preserving CP violation, including the one-loop CP-violating neutral Higgs-boson mixing effects induced dominantly by the CP phases in the top and bottom (s)quark sectors. We construct the most general form of the effective Lagrangian for the neutralino-nucleus scattering in the limit of vanishing momentum transfers and then we perform a comprehensive analysis of the effects of the complex CP phases on the mass spectra of the lightest neutralino, neutral Higgs bosons and top squarks, and on the the spin-dependent and spin-independent neutralino-nucleus scattering cross section for three neucleus targets F, Si and Ge. The CP phases can reduce or enhance the neutralino-nucleus cross sections significantly, depending on the values of the real parameters in the MSSM.

Probing MSSM Higgs Sector with Explicit CP Violation at a Photon Linear Collider

The CP properties of Higgs bosons can be probed through their s-channel resonance productions via photon-photon collisions by use of circularly and/or linearly polarized backscattered laser photons at a TeV-scale linear e^+ e^- collider. Exploiting this powerful tool, we investigate in detail the Higgs sector of the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model with explicit CP violation.

Reconstructing the Chargino System at $e^+e^-$ Linear Colliders

In most supersymmetric theories charginos, $\tildeχ^\pm_{1,2}$, belong to the class of the lightest supersymmetric particles. The chargino system can be reconstructed completely in $e^+e^-$ collider experiments: $e^+e^-\to\tildeχ_i^+ \tildeχ_j^- [i,j=1,2]$. By measuring the total cross sections and the asymmetries with polarized beams, the chargino masses and the gaugino-higgsino mixing angles of these states can be determined accurately. If only the lightest charginos $\tildeχ_1^\pm$ are kinematically accessible in a first phase of the machine, transverse beam polarization or the measurement of chargino polarization in the final state is needed to determine the mixing angles. From these observables the fundamental SUSY parameters can be derived: the SU(2) gaugino mass $M_2$, the modulus and the cosine of the CP-violating phase of the higgsino mass parameter $μ$, and $\tanβ= v_2/v_1$, the ratio of the vacuum expectation values of the two neutral Higgs doublet fields. The remaining two-fold ambiguity of the phase can be resolved by measuring the normal polarization of the charginos. Sum rules of the cross sections can be exploited to investigate the closure of the two-chargino system.

CP Phases in Correlated Production and Decay of Neutralinos in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model

We investigate the associated production of neutralinos $e^+e^-\to\tildeχ^0_1\tildeχ^0_2$ accompanied by the neutralino leptonic decay $\tildeχ^0_2\to\tildeχ^0_1 \ell^+\ell^-$, taking into account initial beam polarization and production-decay spin correlations in the minimal supersymmetric standard model with general CP phases but without generational mixing in the slepton sector. The stringent constraints from the electron EDM on the CP phases are also included in the discussion. Initial beam polarizations lead to three CP--even distributions and one CP--odd distribution, which can be studied independently of the details of the neutralino decays. We find that the production cross section and the branching fractions of the leptonic neutralino decays are very sensitive to the CP phases. In addition, the production--decay spin correlations lead to several CP--even observables such as lepton invariant mass distribution, and lepton angular distribution, and one interesting T--odd (CP--odd) triple product of the initial electron momentum and two final lepton momenta, the size of which might be large enough to be measured at the high--luminosity future electron--positron collider or can play a complementary role in constraining the CP phases with the EDM constraints.

MSSM Higgs-Boson Production at Hadron Colliders with Explicit CP Violation

Gluon fusion is the main production mechanism for Higgs bosons with masses up to several hundred GeV in $pp$ collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. We investigate the effects of the CP-violating phases on the fusion process including both the sfermion-loop contributions and the one-loop induced CP-violating scalar-pseudoscalar mixing in the minimal supersymmetric standard model. With a universal trilinear parameter assumed, every physical observable involves only the sum of the phases of the universal trilinear parameter $A$ and the higgsino mass parameter $μ$. The phase affects the lightest Higgs-boson production rate significantly through the neutral Higgs-boson mixing and, for the masses around the lightest stop-pair threshold, it also changes the production rate of the heavy Higgs bosons significantly through both the stop and sbottom loops and the neutral Higgs-boson mixing.

Single-photon events in e^+ e^- collisions

We provide a detailed investigation of single-photon production processes in $e^+e^-$ collisions with missing momenta carried by neutrinos or neutralinos. The transition amplitudes for both processes can be organized into a generic simplified, factorized form; each neutral V$\pm$A vector current of missing energy carriers is factorized out and all the characteristics of the reaction is solely included in the electron vector current. Firstly, we apply the generic form to give a unified description of a single-photon production with a Dirac-type or Majorana-type neutrino-pair and to confirm their identical characteristics as suggested by the so-called Practical Dirac-Majorana Confusion Theorem. Secondly, we show that the generic amplitude form is maintained with the anomalous P- and C-invariant WW$γ$ couplings in the neutrino-associated process and it enables us to easily understand large contributions of the anomalous WW$γ$ couplings at higher energies and, in particular, at the points away from the Z-resonance peak. Finally, the neutralino-associated process, which receives modifications in both the left-handed and right-handed electron currents due to the exchanges of the left-handed and right-handed selectrons, can be differentiated from the neutrino-associated ones through the left-right asymmetries and/or the circular polarization of the outgoing photon.

Chargino Pair Production in $e^+e^-$ Collisions

Charginos $χ_1^\pm$ are expected to be the lightest observable supersymmetric particles in many supersymmetric models. We present a procedure which will allow to determine the chargino mixing angles and, subsequently, the fundamental SUSY parameters $M_2, μ$ and $\tanβ$ by measurements of the total cross section and the spin correlations in $e^+e^-$ annihilation to $χ_1^+ χ_1^-$ chargino pairs.

Determining SUSY Parameters in Chargino Pair-Production in $e^+e^-$ Collisions

In most supersymmetric theories, charginos $\tildeχ^\pm_{1,2}$, mixtures of charged color-neutral gauginos and higgsinos, belong to the class of the lightest supersymmetric particles. They are easy to observe at $e^+e^-$ colliders. By measuring the total cross sections and the left-right asymmetries with polarized electron beams in $e^+e^-\to\tildeχ_i^-\tildeχ_j^+ [i,j=1,2]$, the chargino masses and the gaugino-higgsino mixing angles can be determined. From these observables the fundamental SUSY parameters can be derived: the SU(2) gaugino mass $M_2$, the modulus $|μ|$ and $\cos Φ_μ$ of the higgsino mass parameter, and $\tanβ= v_2/v_1$, the ratio of the vacuum expectation values of the two neutral Higgs doublet fields. The solutions are unique; the CP-violating phase $Φ_μ$ can be determined uniquely by analyzing effects due to the normal polarization of the charginos.

CP Violation in the Top-Quark Pair Production at a Next Linear Collider

We provide a detailed, model-independent, study for CP violation effects due to the T-odd top-quark electric dipole moment (EDM) and weak dipole moment (WDM) in the top-quark pair production via $e^+e^-$ and two-photon annihilation at a next $e^+e^-$ linear collider (NLC). There are two methods in detecting CP violation effects in these processes. One method makes use of measurements of various spin correlations in the final decay products of the produced top-quark pair, while the other is to measure various CP-odd polarization asymmetry effects of the initial states. In the $e^+e^-$ case only the first method can be used, and in the $γγ$ case both methods can be employed. We provide a complete classification of angular correlations of the $t$ and $\bar{t}$ decay products under CP and CP\tilde{T} which greatly faciliate CP tests in the $e^+e^-$ mode. Concentrating on the second method with the Compton back-scattered high-energetic laser light off the electron or positron beam in the two-photon mode, we construct two CP-odd and CP\tilde{T}-even initial polarization configurations and apply them to investigating CP-violating effects due to the top-quark EDM. With a typical set of experimental parameters at the NLC, we compare the 1-σsensitivities to the top-quark EDM and WDM in the $e^+e^-$ mode and the two-photon mode. Some model expectation values of the T-odd parameters are compared with the results.

Probing the Weak Boson Sector in $γe\rightarrow Ze$

We study possible deviations from the standard model in the reaction $γe\rightarrow Ze$ at a 500 GeV $e^+e^-$ collider. As a photon source we use a laser backscattered photon beam. We investigate the most general $γZγ$ and $γZZ$ vertices including operators up to energy-dimension-six which are Lorentz invariant. These vertices require four extra parameters; two are CP-conserving, $h^γ_1$ and $h^Z_1$, and two are CP-violating, $h^γ_2$ and $h^Z_2$. We present analytical expressions of the helicity amplitudes for the process $γe\rightarrow Ze$ for arbitrary values of anomalous couplings. Assuming Standard Model values are actually measured we present the allowed region in the ($h^γ_1,h^Z_1$) plane at the 90\% confidence level. We then show how the angular correlation of the $Z$ decay products can be used to extract detailed information on the anomalous (especially CP-violating) $γZγ$ and $γZZ$ couplings.

Factorization of gravitational Compton scattering amplitude in the linearized version of general relativity

Gravitational Compton scattering process with a massive fermion is studied in the context of the linearized gravity. Gravitational gauge invariance and graviton transversality cause the transition amplitude to be factorized into that of scalar QED Compton scattering and that of fermion QED Compton scattering with an overall kinematical factor. The factorization is shown explicitly and its physical implications are discussed.
