Open & Closed vs. Pure Open String One-Loop Amplitudes

We express one-loop string amplitudes involving both open and closed strings as sum over pure open string amplitudes. These findings generalize the analogous tree-level result to higher loops and extend the tree-level observation that in gravitational amplitudes a graviton can be traded for two gluons. Our results are derived from analytic continuation of closed string world-sheet coordinates on the cylinder resulting in pairs of real open string coordinates located at the two cylinder boundaries subject to a one-loop kernel. The latter depends on the loop momentum flowing between the two cylinder boundaries and relates to intersection theory for twisted cycles. Finally, contact is made with one-loop open string monodromy relations. The latter contain a boundary term, which is related to non-physical contours on the cylinder. A physical interpretation of the latter in terms of a closed string insertion is given.

Black Hole Formation and Classicalization in Ultra-Planckian 2 -> N Scattering

We establish a connection between the ultra-Planckian scattering amplitudes in field and string theory and unitarization by black hole formation in these scattering processes. Using as a guideline an explicit microscopic theory in which the black hole represents a bound-state of many soft gravitons at the quantum critical point, we were able to identify and compute a set of perturbative amplitudes relevant for black hole formation. These are the tree-level N-graviton scattering S-matrix elements in a kinematical regime (called classicalization limit) where the two incoming ultra-Planckian gravitons produce a large number N of soft gravitons. We compute these amplitudes by using the Kawai-Lewellen-Tye relations, as well as scattering equations and string theory techniques. We discover that this limit reveals the key features of the microscopic corpuscular black hole N-portrait. In particular, the perturbative suppression factor of a N-graviton final state, derived from the amplitude, matches the non-perturbative black hole entropy when N reaches the quantum criticality value, whereas final states with different value of N are either suppressed or excluded by non-perturbative corpuscular physics. Thus we identify the microscopic reason behind the black hole dominance over other final states including non-black hole classical object. In the parameterization of the classicalization limit the scattering equations can be solved exactly allowing us to obtain closed expressions for the high-energy limit of the open and closed superstring tree-level scattering amplitudes for a generic number N of external legs. We demonstrate matching and complementarity between the string theory and field theory in different large-s and large-N regimes.

Closed Superstring Amplitudes, Single-Valued Multiple Zeta Values and Deligne Associator

We revisit the tree-level closed superstring amplitude and identify its alpha'-expansion as series with single-valued multiple zeta values as coefficients. The latter represent a subclass of multiple zeta values originating from single-valued multiple polylogarithms at unity. Moreover, the alpha'-expansion of the closed superstring amplitude can be cast into the same algebraic form as the open superstring amplitude: the closed superstring amplitude essentially is the single-valued version of the open superstring amplitude. This fact points into a deeper connection between gauge and gravity amplitudes than what is implied by Kawai-Lewellen-Tye relations. Furthermore, we argue, that the Deligne associator carries the relevant information on the closed superstring amplitude. In particular, we give an explicit representation of the Deligne associator in terms of Gamma functions modulo squares of commutators of the underlying Lie algebra. This form of the associator can be interpreted as the four-point closed superstring amplitude.

Motivic Multiple Zeta Values and Superstring Amplitudes

The structure of tree-level open and closed superstring amplitudes is analyzed. For the open superstring amplitude we find a striking and elegant form, which allows to disentangle its alpha'-expansion into several contributions accounting for different classes of multiple zeta values. This form is bolstered by the decomposition of motivic multiple zeta values, i.e. the latter encapsulate the alpha'-expansion of the superstring amplitude. Moreover, a morphism induced by the coproduct maps the alpha'-expansion onto a non-commutative Hopf algebra. This map represents a generalization of the symbol of a transcendental function. In terms of elements of this Hopf algebra the alpha'-expansion assumes a very simple and symmetric form, which carries all the relevant information. Equipped with these results we can also cast the closed superstring amplitude into a very elegant form.

BPS Saturated String Amplitudes: K3 Elliptic Genus and Igusa Cusp Form

We study BPS saturated one-loop amplitudes in type II string theory compactified on K3 x T^2. The classes of amplitudes we consider are only sensitive to the very basic topological data of the internal K3 manifold. As a consequence, the integrands of the former are related to the elliptic genus of K3, which can be decomposed into representations of the internal N=4 superconformal algebra. Depending on the precise choice of external states these amplitudes capture either only the contribution of the short multiplets or the full series including intermediate multiplets. In the latter case we can define a generating functional for the whole class, which we show is given by the weight ten Igusa cusp form chi_{10} of Sp(4,Z). We speculate on possible algebraic implications of our result on the BPS states of the N=4 type II compactification.

Higher Point Spin Field Correlators in D=4 Superstring Theory

Calculational tools are provided allowing to determine general tree-level scattering amplitudes for processes involving bosons and fermions in heterotic and superstring theories in four space-time dimensions. We compute higher-point superstring correlators involving massless four-dimensional fermionic and spin fields. In D=4 these correlators boil down to a product of two pure spin field correlators of left- and right-handed spin fields. This observation greatly simplifies the computation of such correlators. The latter are basic ingredients to compute multi-fermion superstring amplitudes in D=4. Their underlying fermionic structure and the fermionic couplings in the effective action are determined by these correlators.

On tree-level higher order gravitational couplings in superstring theory

We consider the scattering amplitudes of five and six gravitons at tree-level in superstring theory. Their power series expansions in the Regge slope alpha' are analyzed through the order alpha'^8 showing some interesting constraints on higher order gravitational couplings in the effective superstring action like the absence of R^5 terms. Furthermore, some transcendentality constraints on the coefficients of the non-vanishing couplings are observed: the absence of zeta values of even weight through the order alpha'^8 like the absence of zeta(2) zeta(3) R^6 terms. Our analysis is valid for any superstring background in any space-time dimension, which allows for a conformal field theory description.

Open & Closed vs. Pure Open String Disk Amplitudes

We establish a relation between disk amplitudes involving N_o open and N_c closed strings and disk amplitudes with only N_o+2N_c open strings. This map, which represents a sort of generalized KLT relation on the disk, reveals important structures between open & closed and pure open string disk amplitudes: it relates couplings of brane and bulk string states to pure brane couplings. On the string world-sheet this becomes a non-trivial monodromy problem, which reduces the disk amplitude of N_o open and N_c closed strings to a sum of many color ordered partial subamplitudes of N_o+2N_c open strings. This sum can be further reduced to a sum over (N_o+2N_c-3)! subamplitudes of N=N_o+2N_c open strings only. Hence, the computation of disk amplitudes involving open and closed strings is reduced to computing these subamplitudes in the open string sector. In this sector we find a string theory generalization and proof of the Kleiss-Kuijf and Bern-Carrasco-Johanson relations: All order alpha' identities between open string subamplitudes are derived, which reproduce these field-theory relations in the limit alpha'->0. These identities allow to reduce the number of independent subamplitudes of an open string N-point amplitude to (N-3)!. This number is identical to the dimension of a minimal basis of generalized Gaussian hypergeometric functions describing the full N-point open string amplitude.

The Hunt for New Physics at the Large Hadron Collider

The Large Hadron Collider presents an unprecedented opportunity to probe the realm of new physics in the TeV region and shed light on some of the core unresolved issues of particle physics. These include the nature of electroweak symmetry breaking, the origin of mass, the possible constituent of cold dark matter, new sources of CP violation needed to explain the baryon excess in the universe, the possible existence of extra gauge groups and extra matter, and importantly the path Nature chooses to resolve the hierarchy problem - is it supersymmetry or extra dimensions. Many models of new physics beyond the standard model contain a hidden sector which can be probed at the LHC. Additionally, the LHC will be a top factory and accurate measurements of the properties of the top and its rare decays will provide a window to new physics. Further, the LHC could shed light on the origin of neutralino masses if the new physics associated with their generation lies in the TeV region. Finally, the LHC is also a laboratory to test the hypothesis of TeV scale strings and D-brane models. An overview of these possibilities is presented in the spirit that it will serve as a companion to the Technical Design Reports (TDRs) by the particle detector groups ATLAS and CMS to facilitate the test of the new theoretical ideas at the LHC. Which of these ideas stands the test of the LHC data will govern the course of particle physics in the subsequent decades.

Non-Abelian Born-Infeld Action and Type I - Heterotic Duality (II): Nonrenormalization Theorems

Type I - heterotic duality in D=10 predicts various relations and constraints on higher order F^n couplings at different string loop levels on both sides. We prove the vanishing of two-loop corrections to the heterotic F^4 terms, which is one of the basic predictions from this duality. Furthermore, we show that the heterotic F^5 and (CP even) F^6 couplings are not renormalized at one loop. These results strengthen the conjecture that in D=10 any Tr F^(2n) coupling appears only at the disc tree-level on type I side and at (n-1)-loop level on the heterotic side. Our non-renormalization theorems are valid in any heterotic string vacuum with sixteen supercharges.

1/4 BPS States and Non-Perturbative Couplings in N=4 String Theories

We compute certain 2K+4-point, one-loop couplings in the type IIA string compactified on K3 x T^2, which are related to a topological index on this manifold. Their special feature is that they are sensitive to only short and intermediate BPS multiplets. The couplings derive from underlying prepotentials G[K](T,U), which can be nicely summed up into a fundamental generating function. In the dual heterotic string on T^6, the amplitudes describe non-perturbative gravitational corrections to K-loop amplitudes due to bound states of fivebrane instantons with heterotic world-sheet instantons. We argue, as a consequence, that our results also give information about instanton configurations in six dimensional Sp(2k) gauge theories on T^6.

Higher Derivative Couplings and Heterotic-Type I Duality in Eight Dimensions

We calculate F^4 and R^4T^(4g-4) couplings in d=8 heterotic and type I string vacua (with gauge and graviphoton field strengths F,T, and Riemann curvature R). The holomorphic piece F_g of the heterotic one-loop coupling R^4T^(4g-4) is given by a polylogarithm of index 5-4g and encodes the counting of genus g curves with g nodes on the K3 of the dual F-theory side. We present closed expressions for world-sheet tau-integrals with an arbitrary number of lattice vector insertions. Furthermore we verify that the corresponding heterotic one-loop couplings sum up perturbative open string and non-perturbative D-string contributions on the type I side. Finally we discuss a type I one-loop correction to the R^2 term.

On the Anomalous and Global Interactions of Kodaira 7-Planes

We review interactions between certain 7-planes which are composed out of mutually non-local (p,q) 7-branes and which correspond to specific Kodaira singularities. We discuss in particular how to compute certain moduli-dependent terms in the effective action. These do not only probe the local Chern-Simons terms on the world-volumina, but also certain global aspects of plane interactions that can be attributed to ``torsion'' (or \ZZ_N-valued) D-brane charges.

Prepotentials from Symmetric Products

We investigate the prepotential that describes certain F^4 couplings in eight dimensional string compactifications, and show how they can be computed from the solutions of inhomogenous differential equations. These appear to have the form of the Picard-Fuchs equations of a fibration of Sym^2(K3) over P^1. Our findings give support to the conjecture that the relevant geometry which underlies these couplings is given by a five-fold.

preprint1999arXiv

Quartic Gauge Couplings from K3 Geometry

We show how certain F^4 couplings in eight dimensions can be computed using the mirror map and K3 data. They perfectly match with the corresponding heterotic one-loop couplings, and therefore this amounts to a successful test of the conjectured duality between the heterotic string on T^2 and F-theory on K3. The underlying quantum geometry appears to be a 5-fold, consisting of a hyperk"ahler 4-fold fibered over a IP^1 base. The natural candidate for this fiber is the symmetric product Sym^2(K3). We are lead to this structure by analyzing the implications of higher powers of E_2 in the relevant Borcherds counting functions, and in particular the appropriate generalizations of the Picard-Fuchs equations for the K3.

String Amplitudes and N=2, d=4 Prepotential in Heterotic K3 x T^2 Compactifications

For the gauge couplings, which arise after toroidal compactification of six-dimensional heterotic N=1 string theories from the T^2 torus, we calculate their one-loop corrections. This is performed by considering string amplitudes involving two gauge fields and moduli fields. We compare our results with the equations following from N=2 special geometry and the underlying prepotential of the theory. Moreover we find relations between derivatives of the N=2, d=4 prepotential and world-sheet tau-integrals which appear in various string amplitudes of any T^2-compactification.

Self-Dual Strings and Stability of BPS States in N=2 SU(2) Gauge Theories

We show how BPS states of supersymmetric SU(2) Yang-Mills with matter -both massless and massive- are described as self-dual strings on a Riemann surface. This connection enables us to prove the stability and the strong coupling behaviour of these states. The Riemann surface naturally arises from type-IIB Calabi-Yau compactifications whose three-branes wrapped around vanishing two-cycles correspond to one-cycles on this surface.

Moduli Dependence of One--Loop Gauge Couplings in (0,2) Compactifications

We derive the moduli dependence of the one--loop gauge couplings for non--vanishing gauge background fields in a four--dimensional heterotic (0,2) string compactification. Remarkably, these functions turn out to have a representation as modular functions on an auxiliary Riemann surface on appropriate truncations of the full moduli space. In particular, a certain kind of one--loop functions is given by the free energy of two--dimensional solitons on this surface.

Threshold Corrections to Gauge Couplings in Orbifold Compactifications

We derive the moduli dependent threshold corrections to gauge couplings in toroidal orbifold compactifications. The underlying six dimensional torus lattice of the heterotic string theory is not assumed ---as in previous calculations--- to decompose into a direct sum of a four--dimensional and a two--dimensional sublattice, with the latter lying in a plane left fixed by a set of orbifold twists. In this more general case the threshold corrections are no longer automorphic functions of the modular group, but of certain congruence subgroups of the modular group. These groups can also be obtained by studying the massless spectrum; moreover they have larger classes of automorphic functions. As a consequence the threshold corrections cannot be uniquely determined by symmetry considerations and certain boundary conditions at special points in the moduli space, as was claimed in previous publications.

Moduli and Twisted Sector Dependence of Z_N x Z_M Orbifold Couplings

We derive the four point correlation function involving four twist fields for arbitrary even dimensional Z_N x Z_M orbifold compactifications. Using techniques from the conformal field theory the three point correlation functions with twist fields are determined. Both the choice of the modular background (compatible with the twists) and of the (higher) twisted sectors involved are fully general. Our results turn out to be target space duality invariant.

Yukawa Couplings for Bosonic $Z_N$ Orbifolds: Their Moduli and Twisted Sector Dependence

The three point correlation functions with twist fields are determined for bosonic $Z_N$ orbifolds. Both the choice of the modular background (compatible with the twist) and of the (higher) twisted sectors involved are fully general. We point out a necessary restriction on the set of instantons contributing to twist field correlation functions not obtained in previous calculations. Our results show that the theory is target space duality invariant.
