A review on quantum information processing in cavities

The processing of information and computation is undergoing a paradigmatic shift since the realization of the enormous potential of quantum features to perform these tasks. Coupled cavity array is one of the well-studied systems to carry out these tasks. It is a versatile platform for quantum networks for distributed information processing and communication. Cavities have the salient feature of retaining photons for longer durations, thereby enabling them to travel coherently through the array without losing them in dissipation. Many quantum information protocols have been implemented in arrays of coupled cavities. These advancements promise the suitability of cavity arrays for large-scale quantum communications and computations. This article reviews a few theoretical proposals and experimental realizations of quantum information tasks in cavities.

Enhancing phase sensitivity with number state filtered coherent states

Number state filtered coherent states are a class of nonclassical states obtained by removing one or more number states from a coherent state. Phase sensitivity of an interferometer is enhanced if these nonclassical states are used as input states. The optimal phase sensitivity, which is related to the quantum Cramer-Rao bound (QCRB) for the input state, improves beyond the standard quantum limit. It is argued that removal of more than one suitable number state leads to better phase sensitivity. As an important limiting case in this context, the even and odd coherent states, where the odd and even number states are filtered from coherent state respectively, are considered. The optimal phase sensitivity for these limiting cases equals that of the squeezed vacuum. It is observed that the improvement in phase sensitivity is not in direct proportion to the nonclassicality of the input states.

Quantum interference induced photon localisation and delocalisation in coupled cavities

We study photon localisation and delocalisation in a system of two nonlinear cavities with intensity-dependent coupling. It is shown that complete localisation or delocalisation is possible for proper choices of the strengths of nonlinearity, detuning and inter-cavity coupling. Role of the relative phase in the initial superposition in attaining localisation and delocalisation is discussed. Effects of dissipation and decoherence are considered and the use of quantum interference in reducing dissipation is explored. Many of the features of the system are shown to be the consequences of quantum interference.

Superposed Coherent States improve fidelity of NOON states generated in post-selection

Mixing the squeezed vacuum and coherent state in a beam-splitter generates NOON states of the electromagnetic field, but with fidelity less than unity. In this note it is shown that the output of the beam-splitter generates the NOON states with unit fidelity if superposed coherent states are used instead of the squeezed vacuum. Also, the post-selection probability of NOON states is shown to be higher.

Truncated Coherent States and Photon-addition

A class of states of the electromagnetic field involving superpositions of all the excited states above a specified low energy eigenstate of the electromagnetic field is introduced. These states and the photon-added coherent states are shown to be the limiting cases of a generalized photon-added coherent states. This new class of states is nonclassical, non-Gaussian and has equal uncertainties in the field quadratures. For suitable choices of parameters, these uncertainties are very close to those of the coherent states. Nevertheless, these states exhibit sub-Poissonian photon number distribution, which is a nonclassical feature. Under suitable approximations, these states become the generalized Bernoulli states of the field. Nonclassicality of these states is quantified using their entanglement potential.

Effect of thermal noise on atom-field interaction: Glauber-Lachs versus Mixing

Coherent signal containing thermal noise is a mixed state of radiation. There are two distinct classes of such states, a Gaussian state obtained by Glauber-Lachs mixing and a non-Gaussian state obtained by the canonical probabilistic mixing of thermal state and coherent state. Though both these versions are noise-included signal states, the effect of noise is less pronounced in the Glauber-Lachs version. Effects of these two distinct ways of noise addition is considered in the context of atom-field interaction; in particular, temporal evolution of population inversion and atom-field entanglement are studied. Quantum features like the collapse-revivals in the dynamics of population inversion and entanglement are diminished by the presence of thermal noise. It is shown that the features lost due to the presence of thermal noise are restored by the process of photon-addition.

Photon-added Coherent States in Parametric Down-conversion

Photon-added coherent states have been realized in optical parametric down-conversion by Zavatta {\em et al} [Science 306 (2004) 660-662]. In this report, it is established that the states generated in the process are {\em ideal} photon-added coherent states. It is shown that the scheme can generate higher order photon-added coherent states. A comparative study of the down-conversion process and atom-cavity interaction in generating the photon-added coherent states is presented.

Hierarchy of Separability Conditions for Bipartite Systems

A new hierarchy of separability conditions for bipartite states is obtained. All the conditions in the hierarchy are necessary for separability. The conditions are expressed in terms of higher powers of the density operator of the bipartite system and the reduced density operators of the subsystems. Violation of any of the conditions in the hierarchy implies entanglement. As a consequence of the hierarchy, another separability condition, expressed in terms of the eigenvalues of the density operators of the total system and subsystems, is obtained.

Nonlinear Jaynes-Cummings model of atom-field interaction

Interaction of a two-level atom with a single mode of electromagnetic field including Kerr nonlinearity for the field and intensity-dependent atom-field coupling is discussed. The Hamiltonian for the atom-field system is written in terms of the elements of a closed algebra, which has SU(1,1) and Heisenberg-Weyl algebras as limiting cases. Eigenstates and eigenvalues of the Hamiltonian are constructed. With the field being in a coherent state initially, the dynamical behaviour of atomic-inversion, field-statistics and uncertainties in the field quadratures are studied. The appearance of nonclassical features during the evolution of the field is shown. Further, we explore the overlap of initial and time-evolved field states.
