Transverse-energy distributions at midrapidity in pp++pp, dd++Au, and Au++Au collisions at sNN=62.4\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=62.4--200~GeV and implications for particle-production models

Measurements of the midrapidity transverse energy distribution, $d\Et/dη$, are presented for pp++pp, dd++Au, and Au++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV and additionally for Au++Au collisions at sNN=62.4\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=62.4 and 130 GeV. The $d\Et/dη$ distributions are first compared with the number of nucleon participants NpartN_{\rm part}, number of binary collisions NcollN_{\rm coll}, and number of constituent-quark participants NqpN_{qp} calculated from a Glauber model based on the nuclear geometry. For Au++Au, $\mean{d\Et/dη}/N_{\rm part}$ increases with NpartN_{\rm part}, while $\mean{d\Et/dη}/N_{qp}$ is approximately constant for all three energies. This indicates that the two component ansatz, dET/dη∝(1−x)Npart/2+xNcolldE_{T}/dη\propto (1-x) N_{\rm part}/2 + x N_{\rm coll}, which has been used to represent ETE_T distributions, is simply a proxy for NqpN_{qp}, and that the NcollN_{\rm coll} term does not represent a hard-scattering component in ETE_T distributions. The dET/dηdE_{T}/dη distributions of Au++Au and dd++Au are then calculated from the measured pp++pp ETE_T distribution using two models that both reproduce the Au++Au data. However, while the number-of-constituent-quark-participant model agrees well with the dd++Au data, the additive-quark model does not.

Jet Structure from Dihadron Correlations in d+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV

Dihadron correlations at high transverse momentum in d+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV at midrapidity are measured by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). From these correlations we extract several structural characteristics of jets; the root-mean-squared (RMS) transverse momentum of fragmenting hadrons with respect to the jet sqrt(<j_T^2>), the mean sine-squared angle between the scattered partons <sin^2(phi_jj)>, and the number of particles produced within the dijet that are associated with a high-p_T particle (dN/dx_E distributions). We observe that the fragmentation characteristics of jets in d+Au collisions are very similar to those in p+p collisions and that there is also little dependence on the centrality of the d+Au collision. This is consistent with the nuclear medium having little influence on the fragmentation process. Furthermore, there is no statistically significant increase in the value of <sin^2(phi_jj)> from p+p to d+Au collisions. This constrains the amount of multiple scattering that partons undergo in the cold nuclear medium before and after a hard-collision.

Bose-Einstein Correlations of Charged Pion Pairs in Au+Au Collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200_ GeV

Bose-Einstein correlations of identically charged pion pairs were measured by the PHENIX experiment at mid-rapidity in Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 200 GeV. The Bertsch-Pratt radius parameters were determined as a function of the transverse momentum of the pair and as a function of the centrality of the collision. Using the \it{full} Coulomb correction, the ratio Rout/RsideR_{\rm out}/R_{\rm side} is smaller than unity for <kT><k_{\rm T}> from 0.25 to 1.2 GeV/c and for all measured centralities. However, using recently developed partial Coulomb correction methods, we find that Rout/RsideR_{\rm out}/R_{\rm side} is 0.8-1.1 for the measured <kT><k_{\rm T}> range, and approximately constant at unity with the number of participants.

Systematic Studies of the Centrality and sqrt(s_NN) Dependence of dE_T/deta and dN_ch/deta in Heavy Ion Collisions at Mid-rapidity

The PHENIX experiment at RHIC has measured transverse energy and charged particle multiplicity at mid-rapidity in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 19.6, 130 and 200 GeV as a function of centrality. The presented results are compared to measurements from other RHIC experiments, and experiments at lower energies. The sqrt(s_NN) dependence of dE_T/deta and dN_ch/deta per pair of participants is consistent with logarithmic scaling for the most central events. The centrality dependence of dE_T/deta and dN_ch/deta is similar at all measured incident energies. At RHIC energies the ratio of transverse energy per charged particle was found independent of centrality and growing slowly with sqrt(s_NN). A survey of comparisons between the data and available theoretical models is also presented.
