Contents of partitions and the combinatorics of permutation factorizations in genus 0

The central object of study is a formal power series that we call the content series, a symmetric function involving an arbitrary underlying formal power series $f$ in the contents of the cells in a partition. In previous work we have shown that the content series satisfies the KP equations. The main result of this paper is a new partial differential equation for which the content series is the unique solution, subject to a simple initial condition. This equation is expressed in terms of families of operators that we call $\mathcal{U}$ and $\mathcal{D}$ operators, whose action on the Schur symmetric function $s_λ$ can be simply expressed in terms of powers of the contents of the cells in $λ$. Among our results, we construct the ${\mathcal{U}}$ and ${\mathcal{D}}$ operators explicitly as partial differential operators in the underlying power sum symmetric functions. We also give a combinatorial interpretation for the content series in terms of the Jucys-Murphy elements in the group algebra of the symmetric group. This leads to an interpretation for the content series as a generating series for branched covers of the sphere by a Riemann surface of arbitrary genus $g$. As particular cases, by suitable choice of the underlying series $f$, the content series specializes to the generating series for three known classes of branched covers: Hurwitz numbers, monotone Hurwitz numbers, and $m$-hypermap numbers. We apply our pde to give new proofs of the explicit formulas for these three classes of number in genus $0$. In the case of the $m$-hypermap numbers of Bousquet-Mélou and Schaeffer, this is the first algebraic proof of this result.

Hook Weighted Increasing Trees, Cayley Trees and Abel-Hurwitz Identities

Recently Féray, Goulden and Lascoux gave a proof of a new hook summation formula for unordered increasing trees by means of a generalization of the Prüfer code for labelled trees and posed the problem of finding a bijection between weighted increasing trees and Cayley trees. We give such a bijection, providing an answer to the problem posed by Féray, Goulden and Lascoux as well as showing a combinatorial connection to the theory of tree volumes defined by Kelmans. In addition we give two simple proofs of the hook summation formula. As an application we describe how the hook summation formula gives a combinatorial proof of a generalization of Abel and Hurwitz' theorem, originally proven by Strehl.

The Non-Orientable Map Asymptotics Constant $p_g$

Using the pfaffian structure of the generating series for locally orientable maps, we show that the generating series satsifies a nonlinear differential equation called the BKP equation. Using this we are able to derive a cubic differential equation which is satisfied by the generating series for locally orientable triangulations. As a result, we prove a conjecture of Garoufalidis and Mariño concerning the constant $p_g$ which appears in asymptotic formulas for a variety of rooted maps on non-orientable surfaces. This allows one to determine the asymptotic expansion for $p_g$ up to an unknown Stokes constant.

Diagonal Solutions to the 2-Toda Hierarchy

Using a combinatorial description of the Bernstein operator and its action on Schur functions, we describe the formal power series solutions to a family of partial differential equations known as the 2-Toda hierarchy. We also characterize diagonal solutions and use this to prove that a special family of formal power series, called content-type series, are solutions to the 2-Toda hierarchy. As examples, we prove that various generating series for permutation factorization problems (including the double Hurwitz problem), correlators for the Schur measure on partitions and the formal character expansion of the HCIZ integral are all solutions to the 2-Toda hierarchy.
