About the origin of the magnetic ground state of Tb$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$

Magnetic-rare-earth pyrochlore iridates exhibit a rich variety of unconventional phases, driven by the complex interactions within and between the rare-earth and the iridium sublattices. In this study, we investigate the peculiar magnetic state of Tb$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$, where a component of the Tb$^{3+}$ moment orders perpendicular to its local Ising anisotropy axis. By means of neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering down to dilution temperatures, complemented by specific heat measurements, we show that this intriguing magnetic state is fully established at 1.5 K and we characterize its excitation spectrum across a broad range of energies. Our calculations reveal that bilinear interactions between Tb$^{3+}$ ions subjected to the Ir molecular field capture several key features of the experiments, but need to be supplemented to fully reproduce the observed behavior.

Signature of a randomness-driven spin-liquid state in a frustrated magnet

Collective behaviour of electrons, frustration induced quantum fluctuations and entanglement in quantum materials underlie some of the emergent quantum phenomena with exotic quasi-particle excitations that are highly relevant for technological applications. Herein, we present our thermodynamic and muon spin relaxation measurements, complemented by ab initio density functional theory and exact diagonalization results, on the recently synthesized frustrated antiferromagnet Li4CuTeO6, in which Cu2+ ions (S = 1/2) constitute disordered spin chains and ladders along the crystallographic [101] direction with weak random inter-chain couplings. Our thermodynamic experiments detect neither long-range magnetic ordering nor spin freezing down to 45 mK despite the presence of strong antiferromagnetic interaction between Cu2+ moments leading to a large effective Curie-Weiss temperature of -154 K. Muon spin relaxation results are consistent with thermodynamic results. The temperature and magnetic field scaling of magnetization and specific heat reveal a data collapse pointing towards the presence of random-singlets within a disorder-driven correlated and dynamic ground-state in this frustrated antiferromagnet.

From one- to two-magnon excitations in the S=3/2 magnet $β$-CaCr$_2$O$_4$

We apply neutron spectroscopy to measure the magnetic dynamics in the S=3/2 magnet $β$-CaCr$_2$O$_4$ (T$_N$=21 K). The low-energy fluctuations, in the ordered state, resemble large-S linear spin-waves from the incommensurate ground state. However, at higher energy transfers, these semi-classical and harmonic dynamics are replaced by an energy and momentum broadened continuum of excitations. Applying kinematic constraints required for energy and momentum conservation, sum rules of neutron scattering, and comparison against exact diagonalization calculations, we show that the dynamics at high-energy transfers resemble low-S one-dimensional quantum fluctuations. $β$-CaCr$_2$O$_4$ represents an example of a magnet at the border between classical Néel and quantum phases, displaying dual characteristics.

Kitaev interactions in the Co honeycomb antiferromagnets Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ and Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$

Co$^{2+}$ ions in an octahedral crystal field, stabilise a j$_{eff}$ = 1/2 ground state with an orbital degree of freedom and have been recently put forward for realising Kitaev interactions, a prediction we have tested by investigating spin dynamics in two cobalt honeycomb lattice compounds, Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ and Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$, using inelastic neutron scattering. We used linear spin wave theory to show that the magnetic spectra can be reproduced with a spin Hamiltonian including a dominant Kitaev nearest-neighbour interaction, weaker Heisenberg interactions up to the third neighbour and bond-dependent off-diagonal exchange interactions. Beyond the Kitaev interaction that alone would induce a quantum spin liquid state, the presence of these additional couplings is responsible for the zigzag-type long-range magnetic ordering observed at low temperature in both compounds. These results provide evidence for the realization of Kitaev-type coupling in cobalt-based materials, despite hosting a weaker spin-orbit coupling than their 4d and 5d counterparts.

Dimer Physics in the Frustrated Cairo Pentagonal Antiferromagnet Bi2Fe4O9

The research field of magnetic frustration is dominated by triangle-based lattices but exotic phenomena can also be observed in pentagonal networks. A peculiar noncollinear magnetic order is indeed known to be stabilized in Bi2Fe4O9 materializing a Cairo pentagonal lattice. We present the spin wave excitations in the magnetically ordered state, obtained by inelastic neutron scattering. They reveal an unconventional excited state related to local precession of pairs of spins. The magnetic excitations are then modeled to determine the superexchange interactions for which the frustration is indeed at the origin of the spin arrangement. This analysis unveils a hierarchy in the interactions, leading to a paramagnetic state (close to the Néel temperature) constituted of strongly coupled dimers separated by much less correlated spins. This produces two types of response to an applied magnetic field associated with the two nonequivalent Fe sites, as observed in the magnetization distributions obtained using polarized neutrons.

Field-angle resolved magnetic excitations as a probe of hidden-order symmetry in CeB6

In contrast to magnetic order formed by electrons' dipolar moments, ordering phenomena associated with higher-order multipoles (quadrupoles, octupoles, etc.) are more difficult to characterize because of the limited choice of experimental probes that can distinguish different multipolar moments. The heavy-fermion compound CeB6 and its La-diluted alloys are among the best-studied realizations of the long-range-ordered multipolar phases, often referred to as "hidden order". Previously the hidden order in phase II was identified as primary antiferroquadrupolar (AFQ) and field-induced octupolar (AFO) order. Here we present a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of collective excitations in the phase II of CeB6. Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) in fields up to 16.5 T reveals a new high-energy mode above 14 T in addition to the low-energy magnetic excitations. The experimental dependence of their energy on the magnitude and angle of the applied magnetic field is compared to the results of a multipolar interaction model. The magnetic excitation spectrum in rotating field is calculated within a localized approach using the pseudo-spin presentation for the Gamma8 states. We show that the rotating-field technique at fixed momentum can complement conventional INS measurements of the dispersion at constant field and holds great promise for identifying the symmetry of multipolar order parameters and the details of inter-multipolar interactions that stabilize hidden-order phases.

High-order parametric generation of coherent XUV radiation

We observe a new regime of coherent XUV radiation generation in noble gases induced by femtosecond pulses at very high intensities. This XUV emission has both a reduced divergence and spectral width as compared to high-order harmonic generation (HHG). It is not emitted at a moderate intensity of the driving pulses where only high-order harmonics are generated. At high driving intensities, the additional XUV comb appears near all harmonic orders and even exceeds the HHG signal on the axis. The peaks are observed in several gases and their frequencies do not depend on the driving intensity or gas pressure. We analyze the divergence, spectral width and spectral shift of this XUV emission. We show that these specific features are well explained by high-order parametric generation (HPG) involving multiphoton absorption and combined emission of an idler THz radiation and an XUV beam with remarkably smooth spatial and spectral characteristics.

Anisotropic interactions opposing magnetocrystalline anisotropy in Sr$_3$NiIrO$_6$

We report our investigation of the electronic and magnetic excitations of Sr$_3$NiIrO$_6$ by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering at the Ir L$_3$ edge. The intra-$t_{2g}$ electronic transitions are analyzed using an atomic model, including spin-orbit coupling and trigonal distortion of the IrO$_6$ octahedron, confronted to {\it ab initio} quantum chemistry calculations. The Ir spin-orbital entanglement is quantified and its implication on the magnetic properties, in particular in inducing highly anisotropic magnetic interactions, is highlighted. These are included in the spin-wave model proposed to account for the dispersionless magnetic excitation that we observe at 90 meV. By counterbalancing the strong Ni$^{2+}$ easy-plane anisotropy that manifests itself at high temperature, the anisotropy of the interactions finally leads to the remarkable easy-axis magnetism reported in this material at low temperature.

Antiferro-quadrupolar correlations in the quantum spin ice candidate Pr2Zr2O7

We present an experimental study of the quantum spin ice candidate pyrochlore coumpound \przr\ by means of magnetization measurements, specific heat and neutron scattering up to 12 T and down to 60 mK. When the field is applied along the $[111]$ and $[1\bar{1}0]$ directions, ${\bf k}=0$ field induced structures settle in. We find that the ordered moment rises slowly, even at very low temperature, in agreement with macroscopic magnetization. Interestingly, for $H \parallel [1\bar{1}0]$, the ordered moment appears on the so called $α$ chains only. The spin excitation spectrum is essentially {\it inelastic} and consists in a broad flat mode centered at about 0.4 meV with a magnetic structure factor which resembles the spin ice pattern. For $H \parallel [1\bar{1}0]$ (at least up to 2.5 T), we find that a well defined mode forms from this broad response, whose energy increases with $H$, in the same way as the temperature of the specific heat anomaly. We finally discuss these results in the light of mean field calculations and propose a new interpretation where quadrupolar interactions play a major role, overcoming the magnetic exchange. In this picture, the spin ice pattern appears shifted up to finite energy because of those new interactions. We then propose a range of acceptable parameters for \przr\, that allow to reproduce several experimental features observed under field. With these parameters, the actual ground state of this material would be an antiferroquadrupolar liquid with spin-ice like excitations.

Observation of magnetic fragmentation in spin ice

Fractionalised excitations that emerge from a many body system have revealed rich physics and concepts, from composite fermions in two-dimensional electron systems, revealed through the fractional quantum Hall effect, to spinons in antiferromagnetic chains and, more recently, fractionalisation of Dirac electrons in graphene and magnetic monopoles in spin ice. Even more surprising is the fragmentation of the degrees of freedom themselves, leading to coexisting and a priori independent ground states. This puzzling phenomenon was recently put forward in the context of spin ice, in which the magnetic moment field can fragment, resulting in a dual ground state consisting of a fluctuating spin liquid, a so-called Coulomb phase, on top of a magnetic monopole crystal. Here we show, by means of neutron scattering measurements, that such fragmentation occurs in the spin ice candidate Nd$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$. We observe the spectacular coexistence of an antiferromagnetic order induced by the monopole crystallisation and a fluctuating state with ferromagnetic correlations. Experimentally, this fragmentation manifests itself via the superposition of magnetic Bragg peaks, characteristic of the ordered phase, and a pinch point pattern, characteristic of the Coulomb phase. These results highlight the relevance of the fragmentation concept to describe the physics of systems that are simultaneously ordered and fluctuating.

Photoexcitation Circular Dichroism in Chiral Molecules

Chirality is ubiquitous in nature and fundamental in science, from particle physics to metamaterials. The most established technique of chiral discrimination - photoabsorption circular dichroism - relies on the magnetic properties of a chiral medium and yields an extremely weak chiral response. We propose and demonstrate a new, orders of magnitude more sensitive type of circular dichroism in neutral molecules: photoexitation circular dichroism. It does not rely on weak magnetic effects, but takes advantage of the coherent helical motion of bound electrons excited by ultrashort circularly polarized light. It results in an ultrafast chiral response and the efficient excitation of a macroscopic chiral density in an initially isotropic ensemble of randomly oriented chiral molecules. We probe this excitation without the aid of further chiral interactions using linearly polarized laser pulses. Our time-resolved study of vibronic chiral dynamics opens a way to the efficient initiation, control and monitoring of chiral chemical change in neutral molecules at the level of electrons.

Fluctuations and all-in$-$all-out ordering in dipole-octupole Nd2Zr2O7

We present an experimental study of the pyrochlore coumpound Nd2Zr2O7 by means of neutron scattering and magnetization measurements down to 90 mK. The Nd$^{3+}$ magnetic moments exhibit a strong local $\langle$111$\rangle$ Ising anisotropy together with a dipolar-octupolar nature, different from the standard Kramers-doublet studied so far. We show that, despite the positive Curie-Weiss temperature, \ndzr\ undergoes a transition around 285 mK towards an all-in$-$all-out antiferromagnetic state. We establish the $(H,T)$ phase diagram in the three directions of the applied field and reveal a metamagnetic transition around 0.1 T. The strongly reduced ordered magnetic moment as well as the unexpected shape of the magnetization curves demonstrate that Nd2Zr2O7 , is not a standard Ising antiferromagnet. We propose that the peculiar nature of the Nd doublet combined with competing interactions explain these findings.

Longitudinal and Transverse Zeeman Ladders in the Ising-Like Chain Antiferromagnet BaCo2V2O8

We explore the spin dynamics emerging from the Néel phase of the chain compound antiferromagnet BaCo2V2O8. Our inelastic neutron scattering study reveals unconventional discrete spin excitations, so called Zeeman ladders, understood in terms of spinon confinement, due to the interchain attractive linear potential. These excitations consist in two interlaced series of modes, respectively with transverse and longitudinal polarization. The latter have no classical counterpart and are related to the zero-point fluctuations that weaken the ordered moment in weakly coupled quantum chains. Our analysis reveals that BaCo2V2O8, with moderate Ising anisotropy and sizable interchain interactions, remarkably fulfills the conditions necessary for the observation of these longitudinal excitations.

Mesoscopic correlations in Tb2Ti2O7 spin liquid

We have studied the spin correlations with $\bf{k}$= ($\frac12$, $\frac12$, $\frac12$) propagation vector which appear below 0.4\, K in \tbti\ spin liquid by combining powder neutron diffraction and specific heat on Tb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+y}$ samples with $x$=0, 0.01, -0.01. The $\bf{k}$= ($\frac12$, $\frac12$, $\frac12$) order clearly appears on all neutron patterns by subtracting a pattern at 1.2(1)\,K. Refining the subtracted patterns at 0.07\,K yields two possible spin structures, with spin-ice-like and monopole-like correlations respectively. Mesoscopic correlations involve Tb moments of 1 to 2 \mub\ ordered on a length scale of about 20 Å. In addition, long range order involving a small spin component of 0.1 to 0.2 \mub\ is detected for the $x$= 0 and 0.01 samples showing a peak in the specific heat. Comparison with previous single crystals data suggests that the ($\frac12$, $\frac12$, $\frac12$) order settles in through nanometric spin textures with dominant spin ice character and correlated orientations, analogous to nanomagnetic twins.

Spin dynamics in the presence of competing ferro- and antiferro-magnetic correlations in Yb2Ti2O7

In this work, we show that the zero field excitation spectra in the quantum spin ice candidate pyrochlore compound \ybti\ is a continuum characterized by a very broad and almost flat dynamical response which extends up to $1-1.5$ meV, coexisting or not with a quasi-elastic response depending on the wave-vector. The spectra do not evolve between 50 mK and 2 K, indicating that the spin dynamics is only little affected by the temperature in both the short-range correlated and ordered regimes. Although classical spin dynamics simulations qualitatively capture some of the experimental observations, we show that they fail to reproduce this broad continuum. In particular, the simulations predict an energy scale twice smaller than the experimental observations. This analysis is based on a careful determination of the exchange couplings, able to reproduce both the zero field diffuse scattering and the spin wave spectrum rising in the field polarized state. According to this analysis, \ybti\ lies at the border between a ferro and an antiferromagnetic phase. These results suggest that the unconventional ground state of \ybti\ is governed by strong quantum fluctuations arising from the competition between those phases. The observed spectra may correspond to a continuum of deconfined spinons as expected in quantum spin liquids.

Advanced Virgo: a 2nd generation interferometric gravitational wave detector

Advanced Virgo is the project to upgrade the Virgo interferometric detector of gravitational waves, with the aim of increasing the number of observable galaxies (and thus the detection rate) by three orders of magnitude. The project is now in an advanced construction phase and the assembly and integration will be completed by the end of 2015. Advanced Virgo will be part of a network with the two Advanced LIGO detectors in the US and GEO HF in Germany, with the goal of contributing to the early detections of gravitational waves and to opening a new observation window on the universe. In this paper we describe the main features of the Advanced Virgo detector and outline the status of the construction.

Multi-channel Electronic and Vibrational Dynamics in Polyatomic High-order Harmonic Generation

High-order harmonic generation in polyatomic molecules generally involves multiple channels, each associated with a different orbital. Their unambiguous assignment remains a major challenge for high-harmonic spectroscopy. Here we present a multi-modal approach, using unaligned SF$_6$ molecules as an example, where we combine methods from extreme-ultraviolet spectroscopy, above-threshold ionization and attosecond metrology. Channel-resolved above-threshold ionization measurements reveal that strong-field ionization opens four channels. Two of them, identified by monitoring the ellipticity dependence of the high-harmonic emission, are found to dominate the harmonic signal. A switch from the HOMO-3 to the HOMO-1 channel at 26 eV is confirmed by a phase jump in the harmonic emission, and by the differing dynamical responses to molecular vibrations. This study demonstrates a modus operandi for extending high-harmonic spectroscopy to polyatomic molecules, where complex attosecond dynamics are expected.

Order by Disorder and Energetic Selection of the Ground State in the XY Pyrochlore Antiferromagnet Er2Ti2O7. An Inelastic Neutron Scattering Study

Examples of materials where an "order by disorder" mechanism is at play to select a particular ground state are scarce. It has recently been proposed, however, that the antiferromagnetic XY pyrochlore Er2Ti2O7, reveals a most convincing case of this mechanism. Observation of a spin gap at zone centers has recently been interpreted as a corroboration of this physics. In this paper, we argue, however, that the anisotropy generated by the interaction-induced admixing between the crystal-field ground and excited levels provides for an alternative mechanism. It especially predicts the opening of a spin gap of about 15 micro-eV, which is of the same order of magnitude as the one observed experimentally. We report new high resolution inelastic neutron scattering data which can be well understood within this scenario.

Temperature-Dependent Interplay of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction and Single-Ion Anisotropy in Multiferroic BiFeO$_3$

Low-energy magnon excitations in multiferroic BiFeO$_3$ were measured in detail as a function of temperature around several Brillouin zone centers by inelastic neutron scattering experiments on single crystals. Unique features around 1 meV are directly associated with the interplay of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and a small single-ion anisotropy. The temperature dependence of these and the exchange interactions were determined by fitting the measured magnon dispersion with spin-wave calculations. The spectra best fits an easy-axis type magnetic anisotropy and the deduced exchange and anisotropy parameters enable us to determine the anharmonicity of the magnetic cycloid. We then draw a direct connection between the changes in the parameters of spin Hamiltonian with temperature and the physical properties and structural deformations of BiFeO$_3$.

An ab initio study of magneto-electric coupling of $\rm YMnO_3$

The present paper proposes the direct calculation of the microscopic contributions to the magneto-electric coupling, using ab initio methods. The electrostrictive and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya contributions were evaluated individually. For this purpose a specific method was designed, combining DFT calculations and embedded fragments, explicitely correlated, quantum chemical calculations. This method allowed us to calculate the evolution of the magnetic couplings as a function of an applied electric field. We found that in $\rm YMnO_3$ the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya contribution to the magneto-electric effect is three orders of magnitude weaker than the electrostrictive contribution. Strictive effects are thus dominant in the magnetic exchange evolution under an applied electric field, and by extension on the magneto-electric effect. These effects remain however quite small and the modifications of the magnetic excitations under an applied electric field will be difficult to observe experimentally. Another important conclusion is that the amplitude of the magneto-electric effect is very small. Indeed, it can be shown that the linear magneto-electric tensor is null due to the inter-layer symmetry operations.

Inhomogeneous High-order Harmonic Generation in Krypton Clusters

High order harmonic generation from clusters is a controversial topic: conflicting theories exist, with different explanations for similar experimental observations. From an experimental point of view, separating the contributions from monomers and clusters is challenging. By performing a spectrally and spatially resolved study in a controlled mixture of clusters and monomers, we are able to isolate a region of the spectrum where the emission purely originates from clusters. Surpringly, the emission from clusters is depolarized, which is the signature of statistical inhomogeneous emission from a low-density source. The harmonic response to laser ellipticity shows that this generation is produced by a new recollisional mechanism, which opens the way to future theoretical studies.

Low temperature diffuse neutron scattering and magnetisation in single crystal Tb2Ti2O7

We present an interpretation of zero field diffuse neutron scattering and of high field magnetisation data at very low temperature in the frustrated pyrochlore system Tb2Ti2O7. This material has antiferromagnetic exchange interactions and it is expected to have Ising character at low temperature. Contrary to expectations, it shows no magnetic ordering down to 0.05\,K, being thus labelled a "spin liquid". However, the ground state in Tb2Ti2O7 is not a mere fluctuating moment paramagnet but, as demonstrated by very recent experiments, a state where the electronic degrees of freedom are hybridised with the phononic variables in an unconventional way. We show here that, by approximating this complex and still unraveled electron-phonon interaction by a dynamic Jahn-Teller coupling, one can account rather well for the diffuse neutron scattering and the low temperature isothermal magnetisation. We discuss the shortcomings of this picture which arise mainly from the fact that the singlet electronic mean field ground state of the model fails to reproduce the observed strong intensity of the elastic and quasi-elastic neutron scattering.

Low temperature structural effects in the (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$ and AsF$_6$ Bechgaard salts

We present a detailed low-temperature investigation of the statics and dynamics of the anions and methyl groups in the organic conductors (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$ and (TMTSF)$_2$AsF$_6$ (TMTSF : tetramethyl-tetraselenafulvalene). The 4 K neutron scattering structure refinement of the fully deuterated (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$-D12 salt allows locating precisely the methyl groups at 4 K. This structure is compared to the one of the fully hydrogenated (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$-H12 salt previously determined at the same temperature. Surprisingly it is found that deuteration corresponds to the application of a negative pressure of 5 x 10$^2$ MPa to the H12 salt. Accurate measurements of the Bragg intensity show anomalous thermal variations at low temperature both in the deuterated PF$_6$ and AsF$_6$ salts. Two different thermal behaviors have been distinguished. Low-Bragg-angle measurements reflect the presence of low-frequency modes at characteristic energies θ$_E$ = 8.3 K and θ$_E$ = 6.7 K for the PF$_6$-D12 and AsF$_6$-D12 salts, respectively. These modes correspond to the low-temperature methyl group motion. Large-Bragg-angle measurements evidence an unexpected structural change around 55 K which probably corresponds to the linkage of the anions to the methyl groups via the formation of F...D-CD2 bonds observed in the 4 K structural refinement. Finally we show that the thermal expansion coefficient of (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$ is dominated by the librational motion of the PF$_6$ units. We quantitatively analyze the low-temperature variation of the lattice expansion via the contribution of Einstein oscillators, which allows us to determine for the first time the characteristic frequency of the PF6 librations: θ$_E$ = 50 K and θ$_E$ = 76 K for the PF$_6$-D12 and PF$_6$-H12 salts, respectively.

Role of the Ionic Potential in High Harmonic Generation

Recollision processes provide direct insight into the structure and dynamics of electronic wave functions. However, the strength of the process sets its basic limitations - the interaction couples numerous degrees of freedom. In this Letter we decouple the basic steps of the process and resolve the role of the ionic potential which is at the heart of a broad range of strong field phenomena. Specifically, we measure high harmonic generation from argon atoms. By manipulating the polarization of the laser field we resolve the vectorial properties of the interaction. Our study shows that the ionic core plays a significant role in all steps of the interaction. In particular, Coulomb focusing induces an angular deflection of the electrons before recombination. A complete spatiospectral analysis reveals the influence of the potential on the spatiotemporal properties of the emitted light.

High-harmonic transient grating spectroscopy of NO2 electronic relaxation

We study theoretically and experimentally the electronic relaxation of NO2 molecules excited by absorption of one ~400 nm pump photon. Semi-classical simulations based on trajectory surface hopping calculations are performed. They predict fast oscillations of the electronic character around the intersection of the ground and first excited diabatic states. An experiment based on high-order harmonic transient grating spectroscopy reveals dynamics occuring on the same timescale. A systematic study of the detected transient is conducted to investigate the possible influence of the pump intensity, pump wavelength, and rotational temperature of the molecules. The quantitative agreement between measured and predicted dynamics shows that, in NO2, high harmonic transient grating spectroscopy encodes vibrational dynamics underlying the electronic relaxation.

InMnO3 : a fully frustrated multiferroic

InMnO$_3$ is a peculiar member of the hexagonal manganites h-RMnO$_3$ (where R is a rare earth metal element), showing crystalline, electronic and magnetic properties at variance with the other compounds of the family. We have studied high quality samples synthesized at high pressure and temperature by powder neutron diffraction. The position of the Mn ions is found to be close to the threshold $\it{x}=1/3$ where superexchange Mn-Mn interactions along the $\it{c}$ axis compensate. Magnetic long range order occurs below $T_{\rm N}$= 120(2) K with a magnetic unit cell doubled along $\it{c}$, whereas short range two dimensional dynamical spin correlations are observed above $T_{\rm N}$. We propose that pseudo-dipolar interactions are responsible for the long period magnetic structure.

Role of Antisymmetric Exchange in Selecting Magnetic Chirality in Ba$_3$NbFe$_3$Si$_2$O$_{14}$

We present electron spin resonance (ESR) investigation of the acentric \FeLang, featuring a unique single-domain double-chiral magnetic ground state. Combining simulations of the ESR line-width anisotropy and the antiferromagnetic-resonance modes allows us to single out the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interaction as the leading magnetic anisotropy term. We demonstrate that the rather minute out-of-plane DM component $d_c=45$ mK is responsible for selecting a unique ground state, which endures thermal fluctuations up to astonishingly high temperatures.

Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, a two singlet spin-liquid pyrochlore

The pyrochlore compound \tbti\ is known to remain in a spin-liquid state down to the lowest attainable temperature (0.05\,K), whereas current theories predict it should order into an antiferromagnetic structure. A number of models have been developed in order to resolve this discrepancy, but they could not obtain a spin-liquid ground state. We present here an explanation for the lack of magnetic order in \tbti\ based on the presence of a Jahn-Teller-like distortion from the local trigonal symmetry and on the physics of the two-singlet system coupled by exchange.

High-order Harmonic Spectroscopy of the Cooper Minimum in Argon: Experimental and Theoretical Study

We study the Cooper minimum in high harmonic generation from argon atoms using long wavelength laser pulses. We find that the minimum in high harmonic spectra is systematically shifted with respect to total photoionization cross section measurements. We use a semi-classical theoretical approach based on Classical Trajectory Monte Carlo and Quantum Electron Scattering methods (CTMC-QUEST) to model the experiment. Our study reveals that the shift between photoionization and high harmonic emission is due to several effects: the directivity of the recombining electrons and emitted polarization, and the shape of the recolliding electron wavepacket.

Two- and three-dimensional magnetic correlations in the spin-1/2 square-lattice system Zn2VO(PO4)2

The magnetic correlations in the quasi-two dimensional spin-1/2 square-lattice system Zn2VO(PO4)2 have been investigated by neutron diffraction technique. A long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering below 3.75 K (TN) has been observed with a reduced moment of 0.66(2) μB per V ion at 1.5 K. In a given ab plane, the AFM spin arrangement is Néel type and the AFM layers are coupled ferromagnetically along the c axis. Remarkably, we have observed a pure 2D short-range AFM ordering in the ab plane above TN. Interestingly, the coexistence of diffuse magnetic scattering and three dimensional antiferromagnetic Bragg peaks has been found below TN, indicating the presence of spin-waves as confirmed by our calculation using the linear spin-wave theory. The observed results are discussed in the light of existing theory for a two-dimensional spin-1/2 square-lattice system.

Spin dynamics in the geometrically frustrated multiferroic CuCrO2

The spin dynamics of the geometrically frustrated triangular antiferromagnet multiferroic CuCrO2 have been mapped out using inelastic neutron scattering. The relevant spin Hamiltonian parameters modelling the incommensurate modulated helicoid have been determined, and correspond to antiferromagnetic nearest and next-nearest neighbour interactions in the ab plane, with a strong planar anisotropy. The weakly dispersive excitation along c reflects the essentially two-dimensional character of the magnetic interactions and according to classical energy calculations it is weakly ferromagnetic. Our results clearly point out the relevance of the balance between a ferromagnetic coupling between adjacent planes and a weakly antiferromagnetic next-nearest neighbour interaction in stabilising the three-dimensional ferroelectric magnetic order in CuCrO2. This novel insight on the interplay between magnetic interactions in CuCrO2 should provide a useful basis in the design of new delafossite-based multiferroic materials.

Quantized spin waves in the metallic state of magnetoresistive manganites

High resolution spin waves measurements have been carried out in ferromagnetic (F) La(1-x)(Sr,Ca)xMnO3 with x(Sr)=0.15, 0.175, 0.2, 0.3 and x(Ca)=0.3. In all q-directions, close to the zone boundary, the spin wave spectra consist of several energy levels, with the same values in the metallic and the x\approx 1/8 ranges. Mainly the intensity varies, jumping from the lower energy levels determined in the x\approx 1/8 range to the higher energy ones observed in the metallic state. On the basis of a quantitative agreement found for x(Sr)=0.15 in a model of ordered 2D clusters, the spin wave anomalies of the metallic state can be interpreted in terms of quantized spin waves within the same 2D clusters, embedded in a 3D matrix.
