Photometric and spectroscopic observations, and abundance tomography modelling of the type Ia supernova SN 2014J located in M82

Spectroscopic and photometric observations of the nearby Type Ia Supernova (SN Ia) SN 2014J are presented. Spectroscopic observations were taken -8 to +10 d relative to B-band maximum, using FRODOSpec, a multi-purpose integral-field unit spectrograph. The observations range from 3900 AA to 9000 AA. SN 2014J is located in M82 which makes it the closest SN Ia studied in at least the last 28 years. It is a spectrosopically normal SN Ia with high velocity features. We model the spectra of SN 2014J with a Monte Carlo (MC) radiative transfer code, using the abundance tomography technique. SN 2014J is highly reddened, with a host galaxy extinction of E(B-V)=1.2 (R_V=1.38). It has a $Δ$m_15(B) of 1.08$\pm$0.03 when corrected for extinction. As SN 2014J is a normal SN Ia, the density structure of the classical W7 model was selected. The model and photometric luminosities are both consistent with B-band maximum occurring on JD 2456690.4$\pm$0.12. The abundance of the SN 2014J behaves like other normal SN Ia, with significant amounts of silicon (12% by mass) and sulphur (9% by mass) at high velocities (12300 km s$^{-1}$) and the low-velocity ejecta (v<6500 km s$^{-1}$) consists almost entirely of $^{56}$Ni.

Chemical abundance anticorrelations in globular cluster stars: The effect on cluster integrated spectra

It is widely accepted that individual Galactic globular clusters harbor two coeval generations of stars, the first one born with the `standard' $α$-enhanced metal mixture observed in field Halo objects, the second one characterized by an anticorrelated CN-ONa abundance pattern overimposed on the first generation, $α$-enhanced metal mixture. We have investigated with appropriate stellar population synthesis models how this second generation of stars affects the integrated spectrum of a typical metal rich Galactic globular cluster, like 47\,Tuc, focusing our analysis on the widely used Lick-type indices. We find that the only indices appreciably affected by the abundance anticorrelations are Ca4227, G4300, ${\rm CN_1}$, ${\rm CN_2}$ and NaD. The age-sensitive Balmer line, Fe line and the [MgFe] indices widely used to determine age, Fe and total metallicity of extragalactic systems are largely insensitive to the second generation population. Enhanced He in second generation stars affects also the Balmer line indices of the integrated spectra, through the change of the turn off temperature and -- in the assumption that the mass loss history of both stellar generations is the same -- the horizontal branch morphology of the underlying isochrones.

A large stellar evolution database for population synthesis studies. V. Stellar models and isochrones with CNONa abundance anticorrelations

We present a new grid of stellar models and isochrones for old stellar populations, covering a large range of [Fe/H] values, for an heavy element mixture characterized by CNONa abundance anticorrelations as observed in Galactic globular cluster stars. The effect of this metal abundance pattern on the evolutionary properties of low mass stars, from the main sequence to the horizontal branch phase is analyzed. We perform comparisons between these new models, and our reference alpha-enhanced calculations, and discuss briefly implications for CMDs showing multiple main sequence or subgiant branches. A brief qualitative discussion of the effect of CN abundances on color-T_{eff} transformations is also presented, highlighting the need to determine theoretical color transformations for the appropriate metal mixture, if one wants to interpret observations in the Stroemgren system, or broadband filters blueward of the Johnson V-band.
