Beyond universality in random matrix theory

In order to have a better understanding of finite random matrices with non-Gaussian entries, we study the 1/N1/N expansion of local eigenvalue statistics in both the bulk and at the hard edge of the spectrum of random matrices. This gives valuable information about the smallest singular value not seen in universality laws. In particular, we show the dependence on the fourth moment (or the kurtosis) of the entries. This work makes use of the so-called complex Gaussian divisible ensembles for both Wigner and sample covariance matrices.

Fluctuations at the edges of the spectrum of the full rank deformed GUE

We consider a full rank deformation of the GUE WN+ANW_N+A_N where ANA_N is a full rank Hermitian matrix of size NN and WNW_N is a GUE. The empirical eigenvalue distribution μANμ_{A_N} of ANA_N converges to a probability distribution νν. We identify all the possible limiting eigenvalue statistics at the edges of the spectrum, including outliers, edges and merging points of connected components of the limiting spectrum. The results are stated in terms of a deterministic equivalent of the empirical eigenvalue distribution of WN+ANW_N+A_N, namely the free convolution of the semi-circle distribution and the empirical eigenvalues distribution of ANA_N.

Universality in the bulk of the spectrum for complex sample covariance matrices

We consider complex sample covariance matrices MN=1NYY∗M_N=\frac{1}{N}YY^* where YY is a N×pN \times p random matrix with i.i.d. entries Yij,1≤i≤N,1≤j≤pY_{ij}, 1\leq i\leq N, 1\leq j \leq p with distribution FF. Under some regularity and decay assumption on FF, we prove universality of some local eigenvalue statistics in the bulk of the spectrum in the limit where N→∞N\to \infty and lim⁡N→∞p/N=γ\lim_{N \to \infty}p/N =γ for any real number γ∈(0,∞)γ\in (0, \infty).
