A new photometric study of M14 (NGC 6402): An interpretation of the Horizontal Branch and beyond

We present a CCD $VI$ photometric study of the globular cluster M14. Particular attention is given to the variable stars. This allowed new classifications and cluster membership considerations. New variables are reported; 3 RRc, 18 SR and 1 SX Phe. The Fourier decomposition of RR Lyrae light curves lead to the mean cluster metallicity of [Fe/H]$_{\rm ZW}= -1.3 \pm 0.2$. Several independent methods yield a mean distance of $9.36 \pm 0.16$ kpc. A Colour-Magnitude diagram outlined by the cluster members enabled a matching with theoretical predictions of isochrones and zero-age horizontal branches, whose fitting to the observations is in good agreement with the above distance and metallicity. The Oosterhoff type of M14 is confirmed as Oo-int, and the pulsating mode distribution of RR Lyrae stars on the HB shows that the bimodal region of the instability strip is shared by RRab and RRc stars. By modelling the mass loss at the RGB after the He flash events, we were able to represent the blue tail of the HB, using a core mass of 0.48 $M_{\odot}$ and total masses of 0.52-0.55 $M_{\odot}$. A progenitor star on the MS of 0.84 $M_{\odot}$ reaches the HB in about 12.5 Gyrs, consonant with previous age determinations of the cluster. Type II Cepheids of M14 may be interpreted as products of post-HB evolution, driven by the complex processes involving the burning of the very thin low mass hydrogen and helium shells of these stars and their minuscule envelopes. No evidences were found in favor of M14 being of extragalactic origin.

Intra-night optical variability monitoring of $γ$-ray emitting blazars

We present the results obtained from our campaign to characterize the intra-night-optical variability properties of blazars detected by the {\it Fermi} Large Area Telescope. This involves R-band monitoring observations of a sample of 18 blazars, that includes five flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and thirteen BL Lac objects (BL Lacs) covering the redshift range z = 0.085$-$1.184. Our observations, carried out using the 1.3 m J.C. Bhattacharya Telescope cover a total of 40 nights ($\sim$200 hrs) between the period 2016 December and 2020 March. We characterized variability using the power enhanced $F-$test. We found a duty cycle (DC) of the variability of about 11\% for FSRQs and 12\% for BL Lacs. Dividing the sample into different sub-classes based on the position of the synchrotron peak in their broadband spectral energy distribution (SED), we found DC of $\sim$16\%, $\sim$10\% and $\sim$7\% for low-synchrotron peaked (LSP), intermediate synchrotron peaked (ISP) and high synchrotron peaked (HSP) blazars. Such high DC of variability in LSP blazars could be understood in the context of the R-band tracing the falling part (contributed by high energy electrons) of the synchrotron component of the broadband SED. Also, the R-band tracing the rising synchrotron part (produced by low energy electrons) in the case of ISP and HSP blazars, could cause lesser variability in them. Thus, the observed high DC of variability in LSP blazars relative to ISP and HSP blazars is in accordance with the leptonic model of emission from blazar jets.

Analysis of absorption lines in the high resolution spectra of five hot post-AGB candidates

From an analysis of absorption lines in the high resolution spectra we have derived the radial velocities, stellar parameters (Teff, gravity, wind-strength parameter logQ and projected rotational velocity) and abundances (C, N, O, and Si ) of IRAS 17460-3114, IRAS 18131-3008, IRAS 19336-0400, LSE 45 and LSE 163. Abundances are found to be solar, except for a low Si abundance in IRAS 19336-0400 and a mild CNO pattern in LSE 163, that rotates at an unusual large rotational velocity for its spectral classification. Combining the stellar parameters information with Gaia DR2 data we are able to derive absolute magnitudes, radii and luminosities and clarify the possible post-AGB nature of the objects. IRAS 17460-3114 and IRAS 18131-3008 are found to be massive OB stars, whereas IRAS 19336-0400 is found to be a post-AGB star, already showing nebular lines in the spectrum. However, we could not confirm the nature of LSE 45 and LSE 163 as post-AGB stars, although their parameters are much more inconsistent with those of massive stars. In both cases, we find a discrepancy between the spectroscopic mass and that derived from the predictions of post-AGB evolutionary tracks. In addition, LSE 45 lacks nebular lines, that are present in IRAS 19336-0400 at a similar temperature. In the case of LSE 163 the rotational velocity (259+/-15 km/s) would be extremely large for a star evolving to CSPN. The combination of this rotational velocity, the high Galactic latitude, slightly large radial velocity and mild CNO enhancement suggests a history of binary interaction.

K-band spectra of selected post-AGB candidates

We present medium resolution (1000) K-band spectra of 12 post-AGB candidates and related stars. For several objects in our sample, these spectra were obtained for the first time. The Br$γ$ line in emission is detected in seven objects indicating the onset of photo-ionization in these objects. Four objects show the presence of He i line. We detect H2 emission line in the spectra of IRAS 06556+1623, IRAS 22023+5249, IRAS 18062+2410 and IRAS 20462+3416. H2 emission line ratio 1-0 S(1)/2-1 S(1) indicate that H2 is radiatively excited due to the UV radiation of hot post-AGB central stars. When compared with the recent observations by other investigators, the Br$γ$ and H2 emission fluxes varied in some of the objects. The hot post-AGB stars IRAS 22495+5134, IRAS 22023+5249, IRAS 18062+2410 and IRAS 20462+3416 seem to be evolving rapidly to young low excitation planetary nebula phase. The spectra of the objects presented in this paper may be useful for future observers as some of these stars show spectral variation and since the post-AGB evolution of some of these stars is relatively rapid.

NGC 6712: the variable star population of a tidally disrupted globular cluster

We present an analysis of $\emph{VI}$ CCD time series photometry of globular cluster NGC 6712. Our main goal is to study the variable star population as indicators of the cluster mean physical parameters. We employed the Fourier decomposition of RR Lyrae light curves to confirm that $[\rm Fe/H]_{UVES} = -1.0 \pm 0.05$ is a solid estimate. We estimated the reddening to the cluster as $E(B-V)$ = 0.35 $\pm$ 0.04 from the RRab stars colour curves. The distance to the cluster was estimated using three independent methods which yielded a weighted mean distance $\big < d \big>$ = 8.1 $\pm$ 0.2 kpc. The distribution of RRab and RRc stars on the HB shows a clear segregation around the first overtone red edge of the instability strip, which seems to be a common feature in OoI-type cluster with a very red horizontal branch. We carried out a membership analysis of 60,447 stars in our FoV using the data from $Gaia$-DR2 and found 1529 likely members; we possess the light curves of 1100 among the member stars. This allowed us to produce a clean colour-magnitude diagram, consistent with an age of 12 Gyrs, and enabled us to discover close unresolved contaminants for several variable stars. From the proper motion analysis we found evidence of non-member stars in the FoV of the cluster being tidally affected by the gravitational pull of the bulge of the Galaxy. We found that the RRab variable V6, shows a previously undetected Blazhko effect. Finally, we report sixteen new variables of the EW-type (9) and SR-type (7).

Unveiling Vela -- Variability of Interstellar Lines in the Direction of the Vela Supernova Remnant III. Na D and Ca II K

High-resolution optical spectra were obtained in 2017-2019 with The Southern African Large Telescope of fifteen stars in the direction of the Vela supernova remnant. Interstellar Ca ii H and K and Na i D lines are discussed in this paper. In particular, the line profiles are compared with profiles at a comparable spectral resolution obtained in 1993-1996 by Cha & Sembach. Ten of the lines of sight show changes to one or more of the components in that line of sight. Changes include small changes (1-2 km/s) in radial velocity and/or increases/decreases in equivalent width over the two decades between the periods of observation. Changes are more obvious in the Ca K line than in the Na D lines. These changes are attributed to gas disturbed by interactions between the supernova ejecta and the surrounding interstellar medium. A representative timescale may be 20-50 years. Small-scale variations in line profiles across the face of the remnant suggest, as previously remarked, that a linear scale for interactions is a small fraction of the 40 pc size of the present remnant.

RR Lyrae stars and the horizontal branch of NGC 5904 (M5)

We report the distance and [Fe/H] value for the globular cluster NGC 5904 (M5) derived from the Fourier decomposition of the light curves of selected RRab and RRc stars. The aim in doing this was to bring these parameters into the homogeneous scales established by our previous work on numerous other globular clusters, allowing a direct comparison of the horizontal branch luminosity in clusters with a wide range of metallicities. Our CCD photometry of the large variable star population of this cluster is used to discuss light curve peculiarities, like Blazhko modulations, on an individual basis. New Blazhko variables are reported. From the RRab stars we found [Fe/H]$_{\rm UVES} = -1.335 \pm 0.003{\rm(statistical)} \pm 0.110{\rm(systematic)}$, and a distance of $7.6\pm 0.2$ kpc, and from the RRc stars we found [Fe/H]$_{\rm UVES}$ = $-1.39 \pm 0.03{\rm(statistical)} \pm 0.12{\rm(systematic)}$ and a distance of $7.5 \pm 0.3$ kpc. The results for RRab and RRc stars should be considered independent since they come from different calibrations and zero points. Absolute magnitudes, radii and masses are also reported for individual RR Lyrae stars. The distance to the cluster was calculated by alternative methods like the P-L relation of SX Phe and the luminosity of the stars at the tip of the red giant branch; we obtained $7.7 \pm 0.4$ and $7.2-7.5$ kpc respectively. The distribution of RR Lyrae stars in the instability strip is discussed and compared with other clusters in connection with the Oosterhoff and horizontal branch type. The Oosterhoff type II clusters systematically show a RRab-RRc segregation about the instability strip first-overtone red edge, while the Oosterhoff type I clusters may or may not display this feature. A group of RR Lyrae stars is identified in an advanced evolutionary stage, and two of them are likely binaries with unseen companions.

A beam-displacement prism based, three band stellar photo-polarimeter

A new astronomical photo-polarimeter that can measure linear polarization of point sources simultaneously in three spectral bands was designed and built in Indian Institute of Astrophysics. The polarimeter has a Calcite beam-displacement prism as the analyzer. The ordinary and extra-ordinary emerging beams in each spectral band are quasi-simultaneously detected by the same photomultiplier by using a high speed rotating chopper. The effective chopping frequency can be set to as high as 200 Hz. A rotating superachromatic Pancharatnam halfwave plate is used to modulate the light incident on the analyzer. The spectral bands are isolated using appropriate dichroic and glass filters. A detailed analysis shows that the reduction of 50% in the efficiency of the polarimeter because of the fact that the intensities of the two beams are measured alternately is partly compensated by the reduced time to be spent on the observation of the sky background. The position angle of polarization produced by the Glan-Taylor prism in the light path is found to be slightly wavelength dependent, indicating that the fixed super-achromatic halfwave plate in the beam does not fully compensate for the variation in the position angle of the effective optical axis of the rotating plate. However, the total amplitude of variation in the U-I spectral region is only 0.92 degree. The polarization efficiency is also found to be wavelength-dependent with a total amplitude of 0.271% in the U-I region; its mean value is 99.211%. The instrumental polarization is found to be very low. It is nearly constant in the V-I spectral region (~0.04%), and apparently, it increases slightly towards the ultraviolet. The observations of polarized stars show that the agreement between the measured polarization values and those available in the literature to be excellent.

A multi-spectral band stellar photo-polarimeter

We designed and built a new astronomical photo-polarimeter that can measure linear polarization simultaneously in three spectral bands. It has a Calcite beamdisplacement prism as the analyzer. The ordinary and extra-ordinary emerging beams in each spectral bands are quasi-simultaneously detected by the same photomultiplier by using a high speed rotating chopper. A rotating superachromatic Pancharatnam halfwave plate is used to modulate the light incident on the analyzer. The spectral bands are isolated using appropriate dichroic and glass filters. We show that the reduction of 50% in the efficiency of the polarimeter because of the fact that the intensities of the two beams are measured alternately is partly compensated by the reduced time to be spent on the observation of the sky background. The use of a beam-displacement prism as the analyzer completely removes the polarization of background skylight, which is a major source of error during moonlit nights, especially, in the case of faint stars. The field trials that were carried out by observing several polarized and unpolarized stars show the performance of the polarimeter to be satisfactory.

New variables in M5 (NGC 5904) and some identification corrections

We report twelve variables not previously detected in the globular cluster M5 (NGC 5904); one SX Phe and eleven semi-regular variables (SR). Their identifications, equatorial coordinates, ephemerides, and light curves are given. Furthermore, we have explored the light curves of a group of stars whose variability has not been confirmed and that are marked as probable non- variables in the CVSGC. Finally, we offer detailed identifications for some of the known variables in crowded regions that were misidentified in previous studies. We shall also address the cases of the cataclysmic variable or U Gem type V101 and of the variable blue straggler V159.

Unveiling Vela - Time Variability of Na I D lines in the Direction of the Vela Supernova Remnant

High-resolution spectral profiles of Na I D lines from the interstellar medium towards 64 stars in the direction of the Vela supernova remnant are presented. This survey conducted mostly between 2011-12 complements an earlier survey of the same stars by Cha & Sembach done in the 1993-96 period. The interval of 15 to 18 years provides a base line to search for changes in the interstellar profiles. Dramatic disappearance of strong absorption components at low radial velocity is seen towards three stars - HD 63578, HD 68217, HD 76161 - over 15-18 years; HD 68217 and HD 76161 are associated with the Vela SNR but HD 63578 is likely associated with the wind bubble of g2 Velorum. The vanishing of these cold neutral clouds in the short time of 15 to 18 years needs some explanation. Other changes are seen in high-velocity Na D components.

Spectroscopic analysis of four post-AGB candidates

We have done a detailed abundance analysis of four unexplored candidate post- Asymptotic Giant Branch(AGB) stars IRAS 13110 - 6629, IRAS 17579 - 3121, IRAS 18321 - 1401 and IRAS 18489 - 0629 using high resolution spectra. We have constructed Spectral Energy Distributions (SED) for these objects using the existing photometric data combined with infrared (IR) fluxes. For all sample stars, the SEDs exhibit double peaked energy distribution with well separated IR peaks showing the presence of dusty circumstellar material. The CNO abundances indicate the production of N via CN cycling, but observed [C/Fe] indicates the mixing of carbon produced by He burning by third dredge up although C/O ratio remains less that 1. A moderate DG effect is clearly seen for IRAS 18489 - 0629 and IRAS 17579 - 3121 while a large scatter observed in depletion plots for IRAS 18321 - 1401 and IRAS 13110 - 6629 indicate the presence of other processes affecting the observed abundance pattern.

Identification of metal-poor stars using the artificial neural network

Identification of metal-poor stars among field stars is extremely useful for studying the structure and evolution of the Galaxy and of external galaxies. We search for metal-poor stars using the artificial neural network (ANN) and extend its usage to determine absolute magnitudes. We have constructed a library of 167 medium-resolution stellar spectra (R ~ 1200) covering the stellar temperature range of 4200 to 8000 K, log g range of 0.5 to 5.0, and [Fe/H] range of -3.0 to +0.3 dex. This empirical spectral library was used to train ANNs, yielding an accuracy of 0.3 dex in [Fe/H], 200 K in temperature, and 0.3 dex in log g. We found that the independent calibrations of near-solar metallicity stars and metal-poor stars decreases the errors in T_eff and log g by nearly a factor of two. We calculated T_eff, log g, and [Fe/H] on a consistent scale for a large number of field stars and candidate metal-poor stars. We extended the application of this method to the calibration of absolute magnitudes using nearby stars with well-estimated parallaxes. A better calibration accuracy for M_V could be obtained by training separate ANNs for cool, warm, and metal-poor stars. The current accuracy of M_V calibration is (+-)0.3 mag. A list of newly identified metal-poor stars is presented. The M_V calibration procedure developed here is reddening-independent and hence may serve as a powerful tool in studying galactic structure.

The Stellar parametrization using Artificial Neural Network

An update on recent methods for automated stellar parametrization is given. We present preliminary results of the ongoing program for rapid parametrization of field stars using medium resolution spectra obtained using Vainu Bappu Telescope at VBO, Kavalur, India. We have used Artificial Neural Network for estimating temperature, gravity, metallicity and absolute magnitude of the field stars. The network for each parameter is trained independently using a large number of calibrating stars. The trained network is used for estimating atmospheric parameters of unexplored field stars.
