Amplitude analysis and branching fraction measurement of $J/ψ\to Λ\barΣ^0η+\mathrm{c.c}$

Based on a sample of $(10087\pm44)\times10^{6}$ $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector, a partial-wave analysis of $ J/ψ\to Λ\bar{ Σ}^0η+\mathrm{c.c} $ is performed for the first time. The dominant contributions are found to be excited $Λ$ states with $J^P=1/2^-$ and $J^P=1/2^+$ in the $ηΛ$ mass spectra. The measured masses and widths are $M=1668.8\pm3.1\pm21.2$ MeV/$c^2$ and $Γ=52.7\pm4.2\pm17.8$ MeV for the $Λ(1670)$, and $M=1881.5\pm16.5\pm20.3$ MeV/$c^2$ and $Γ=82.4\pm18.2\pm8.9$ MeV for the $Λ(1810)$, respectively. The branching fraction is determined to be $ \mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to Λ\bar{ Σ}^0η+\mathrm{c.c}) $ = $(3.44 \pm 0.11 \pm 0.13) \times 10^{-5}$. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic.

DESI Data Release 1: Stellar Catalogue

In this paper we present the stellar Value-Added Catalogue (VAC) based on the DESI Data Release 1. This VAC contains stellar parameter, abundance and radial velocity measurements for more than 4 million stars. It also contains, for the first time, measurements from individual epochs for more than a million stars with at least two observations. The main contribution to the catalogue comes from the bright program of the main survey, which includes $\sim $2.5 million stars, and the backup program, which includes $\sim $ 1 million stars. The combined magnitude range for the stars in the catalogue extends from ${\it Gaia}$ G $\sim 12$ to G $\sim 21$. For the magnitude range $17.5<G<21$ this catalogue represents a factor of 10 increase in the number of stars with radial velocity and abundance measurements compared to existing surveys. Despite DESI's resolution (R $\sim 2500-5000$), the median radial velocity uncertainty for stars in the catalogue is better than 1 km s$^{-1}$. The stellar parameters and abundances of stars in DESI are measured by two independent pipelines, and after applying a temperature-dependent calibration, [Fe/H] abundances of high signal-to-noise stars are accurate to better than $\sim$ 0.1 dex when compared to high-resolution surveys. The catalogue probes different Galactic components including a particularly large number of distant stars: tens of thousands of stars further than 10 kpc, and thousands further than 50 kpc. The catalogue also contains several thousand extremely metal-poor stars with ${\rm [Fe/H]}<-3$. The released sample of stars includes measurements for thousands of stars that are members of dwarf galaxies, open and globular clusters as well as members of several dozen stellar streams. The next public DESI data release is expected in less than two years and will contain three times as many stars as DR1.

Light Dark Matter Search with 7.8 Tonne-Year of Ionization-Only Data in XENONnT

We report on a blinded search for dark matter (DM) using ionization-only (S2-only) signals in XENONnT with a total exposure of $7.83\mathrm{tonne}\times\mathrm{year}$ over 579 days in three science runs. Dedicated background suppression techniques and the first complete S2-only background model in XENONnT provide sensitivity to nuclear recoils of [0.5, 5.0] $\mathrm{keV_\mathrm{nr}}$ and electronic recoils of [0.04, 0.7] $\mathrm{keV_\mathrm{ee}}$. No significant excess over the expected background is observed, and we set 90\% confidence level upper limits on spin-independent DM--nucleon and spin-dependent DM--neutron scattering for DM masses between 3 and 8 $\mathrm{GeV}/c^2$, as well as on DM--electron scattering, axion-like particles, and dark photons, improving on previous constraints. For spin-independent DM--nucleon scattering, we exclude cross sections above $6.0\times10^{-45} $cm$^2$ at a DM mass of 5 $\mathrm{GeV}/c^2$, pushing the XENONnT sensitivity closer to the region where coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering ($\text{CE}ν\text{NS}$) becomes an irreducible background.

Measurement of transverse $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ hyperon polarization in $p$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5.02$ TeV

The transverse polarization of $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ hyperons is measured in $p$Pb collisions collected by the LHCb experiment at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of $5.02$ TeV. The polarization is averaged over hyperon transverse momentum in the ranges $0.15 < p_{T} < 6.00 $ GeV/$c$, and Feynman-$x$ in the ranges $0.005 < x_{F} < 0.040$ (forward region) and $-0.10 < x_{F} < -0.01$ (backward region) defined relative to the proton beam direction. The transverse polarization is found to be compatible with zero for both $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ hyperons. The results are also measured as a function of $p_{T}$ and $x_{F}$ with no significant dependence on these variables observed. The results are compared with previous experimental measurements at different center-of-mass energies and collision environments.

Observation of Polarization and Determination of Electric and Magnetic Moments of $Ξ(1530)^0$ in $ψ(3686)\toΞ(1530)^0\barΞ(1530)^0$

Using the data sample of $2.7\times10^9$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we present an observation of the $Ξ(1530)^0$ polarization in the decay $ψ(3686)\toΞ(1530)^0\barΞ(1530)^0$ with a significance larger than $20σ$ compared with all other tested hypotheses. The helicity amplitudes for the process $ψ(3686)\toΞ(1530)^0\barΞ(1530)^0$ and the moduli of form factors including electric charge, magnetic dipole, electric quadrupole, and magnetic octupole are measured for the first time by performing an angular distribution analysis. Additionally, the polarization correlations between $Ξ(1530)^0$ and $\barΞ(1530)^0$ are measured.

Searching for Quantum Effects in the Brain: A Bell-Type Test for Nonclassical Latent Representations in Autoencoders

Whether neural information processing is entirely classical or involves quantum-mechanical elements remains an open question. Here we propose a model-agnostic, information-theoretic test of nonclassicality that bypasses microscopic assumptions and instead probes the structure of neural representations themselves. Using autoencoders as a transparent model system, we introduce a Bell-type consistency test in latent space, and ask whether decoding statistics obtained under multiple readout contexts can be jointly explained by a single positive latent-variable distribution. By shifting the search for quantum-like signatures in neural systems from microscopic dynamics to experimentally testable constraints on information processing, this work opens a new route for probing the fundamental physics of neural computation.

Coherent photoproduction of $ρ^0, ω$ and excited vector mesons in ultraperipheral PbPb collisions

The invariant-mass distribution for the coherent photoproduction of dipions in ultraperipheral PbPb collisions is measured using data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $224.6 \pm 9.6 μ$b$^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb experiment in 2018 at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=5.02$ TeV. In the mass range from 400 to 1200 MeV, the results are consistent with previous experiments, with the spectrum dominated by the $ρ^0$ meson, which interferes with a nonresonant component, together with a smaller $ω$ meson contribution. In an extended mass range up to 2300 MeV, models previously used do not fit the data and a consistent description requires the introduction of two resonances at masses of $1350\pm20$ MeV and $1790\pm20$ MeV with widths of about 300 MeV. The cross-section for each meson is measured differentially in twelve bins of rapidity from 2.05 to 4.90. The $ρ^0$ cross-section increases with rapidity from about 400 to 600 mb and is measured with a typical precision of 8\%, while the cross-section times branching fraction for the $ω,ρ^\prime$ and $ρ^{\prime\prime}$, with the statistical precision of the data, do not have a pronounced rapidity dependence and are between 0.5 and 1.5 mb, with uncertainties up to 30\%. A large nuclear suppression is observed for the $ρ^0$ meson compared to expectations based on photoproduction on the proton that use the impulse approximation. Significant suppression is also observed compared to that predicted by elastic scattering described in the Glauber approach, or with the addition of inelastic scattering in a Gribov--Glauber model.

ATOMS: ALMA Three-millimeter Observations of Massive Star-forming regions -XIII. Ongoing triggered star formation within clump-fed scenario found in the massive ($\sim1500$ $\rm M_\odot$) clump

Whether ionization feedback triggers the formation of massive stars is highly debated. Using ALMA 3 mm observations with a spatial resolution of $\sim 0.05$ pc and a mass sensitivity of 1.1 $\rm M_\odot$ beam$^{-1}$ at 20 K, we investigate the star formation and gas flow structures within the ionizing feedback-driven structure, a clump-scale massive ($\gtrsim 1500$ $\rm M_\odot$) bright-rimmed cloud (BRC) associated with IRAS 18290-0924. This BRC is bound only if external compression from ionized gas is considered. A small-scale ($\lesssim1$ pc) age sequence along the direction of ionizing radiation is revealed for the embedded cores and protostars, which suggests triggered star formation via radiation-driven implosion (RDI). Furthermore, filamentary gas structures converge towards the cores located in the BRC's center, indicating that these filaments are fueling mass towards cores. The local core-scale mass infall rate derived from H$^{13}$CO$^+$ $J=1-0$ blue profile is of the same order of magnitude as the filamentary mass inflow rate, approximately 1 $\rm M_\odot$ kyr$^{-1}$. A photodissociation region (PDR) covering the irradiated clump surface is detected in several molecules, such as CCH, HCO$^+$, and CS whereas the spatial distribution stratification of these molecules is indistinct. CCH spectra of the PDR possibly indicate a photoevaporation flow leaving the clump surface with a projected velocity of $\sim2$ km s$^{-1}$. Our new observations show that RDI accompanied by a clump-fed process is operating in this massive BRC. Whether this combined process works in other massive BRCs is worth exploring with dedicated surveys.

Denser glasses relax faster: a competition between rejuvenation and aging during in-situ high pressure compression at the atomic scale

A fascinating feature of metallic glasses is their ability to explore different configurations under mechanical deformations. This effect is usually observed through macroscopic observables, while little is known on the consequence of the deformation at atomic level. Using the new generation of synchrotrons, we probe the atomic motion and structure in a metallic glass under hydrostatic compression, from the onset of the perturbation up to a severely-compressed state. While the structure indicates reversible densification under compression, the dynamic is dramatically accelerated and exhibits a hysteresis with two regimes. At low pressures, the atomic motion is heterogeneous with avalanche-like rearrangements suggesting rejuvenation, while under further compression, aging leads to a super-diffusive dynamics triggered by internal stresses inherent to the glass. These results highlight the complexity of the atomic motion in non-ergodic systems and support a theory recently developed to describe the surprising rejuvenation and strain hardening of metallic glasses under compression.

$J/ψ$ photo-production in Pb-Pb peripheral collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 5 TeV

The photo-production of $J/ψ$ mesons at low transverse momentum is studied in peripheral lead-lead collisions collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 5 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 210 $\rm{μb}^{-1}$. The $J/ψ$ candidates are reconstructed through the prompt decay into two muons of opposite charge in the rapidity region of $2.0<y<4.5$. The results significantly improve previous measurements and are compared to the latest theoretical prediction.

A Simulation-Based Method for Correcting Mode Coupling in CMB Angular Power Spectra

Modern CMB analysis pipelines regularly employ complex time-domain filters, beam models, masking, and other techniques during the production of sky maps and their corresponding angular power spectra. However, these processes can generate couplings between multipoles from the same spectrum and from different spectra, in addition to the typical power attenuation. Within the context of pseudo-$C_\ell$ based, MASTER-style analyses, the net effect of the time-domain filtering is commonly approximated by a multiplicative transfer function, $F_{\ell}$, that can fail to capture mode mixing and is dependent on the spectrum of the signal. To address these shortcomings, we have developed a simulation-based spectral correction approach that constructs a two-dimensional transfer matrix, $J_{\ell\ell'}$, which contains information about mode mixing in addition to mode attenuation. We demonstrate the application of this approach on data from the first flight of the SPIDER balloon-borne CMB experiment.

Acceleration of 60 MeV proton beams in the commissioning experiment of SULF-10 PW laser

We report the experimental results of the commissioning phase in the 10 PW laser beamline of Shanghai Superintense Ultrafast Laser Facility (SULF). The peak power reaches 2.4 PW on target without the last amplifying during the experiment. The laser energy of 72\pm 9 J is directed to a focal spot of ~6 μm diameter (FWHM) in 30 fs pulse duration, yielding a focused peak intensity around 2.0 \times 10^{21} W/cm^2. First laser-proton acceleration experiment is performed using plain copper and plastic targets. High-energy proton beams with maximum cut-off energy up to 62.5 MeV are achieved using copper foils at the optimum target thickness of 4 μm via target normal sheath acceleration (TNSA). For plastic targets of tens of nanometers thick, the proton cut-off energy is approximately 20 MeV, showing ring-like or filamented density distributions. These experimental results reflect the capabilities of the SULF-10 PW beamline, e.g., both ultrahigh intensity and relatively good beam contrast. Further optimization for these key parameters is underway, where peak laser intensities of 10^{22}-10^{23} W/cm^2 are anticipated to support various experiments on extreme field physics.

Analysis of neutral $B$-meson decays into two muons

Branching fraction and effective lifetime measurements of the rare decay $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ and searches for the decays $B^0\toμ^+μ^-$ and $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-γ$ are reported using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of $7$ TeV, $8$ TeV and $13$ TeV, corresponding to a luminosity of $9$ fb$^{-1}$. The branching fraction ${\mathcal{B}}(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-)=\left(3.09^{+0.46+0.15}_{-0.43-0.11}\right)\times 10^{-9}$ and the effective lifetime $τ(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-)=(2.07\pm 0.29\pm 0.03)$ are measured, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. No significant signal for $B^0\toμ^+μ^-$ and $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-γ$ decays is found and upper limits $\mathcal{B}(B^0\toμ^+μ^-)<2.6\times 10^{-10}$ and $\mathcal{B}(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-γ)<2.0\times 10^{-9}$ at the 95% CL are determined, where the latter is limited to the range $m_{μμ} > 4.9$ GeV$/c^2$. The results are in agreement with the Standard Model expectations.

Angular analysis of $D^0 \to π^+π^-μ^+μ^-$ and $D^0 \to K^+K^-μ^+μ^-$ decays and search for $CP$ violation

The first full angular analysis and an updated measurement of the decay-rate $CP$ asymmetry of the $D^0 \to π^+π^-μ^+μ^-$ and $D^0 \to K^+K^-μ^+μ^-$ decays are reported. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb$^{-1}$. The full set of $CP$-averaged angular observables and their $CP$ asymmetries are measured as a function of the dimuon invariant mass. The results are consistent with expectations from the standard model and with $CP$ symmetry.

Collaborative Experience between Scientific Software Projects using Agile Scrum Development

Developing sustainable software for the scientific community requires expertise in software engineering and domain science. This can be challenging due to the unique needs of scientific software, the insufficient resources for software engineering practices in the scientific community, and the complexity of developing for evolving scientific contexts. While open-source software can partially address these concerns, it can introduce complicating dependencies and delay development. These issues can be reduced if scientists and software developers collaborate. We present a case study wherein scientists from the SuperNova Early Warning System collaborated with software developers from the Scalable Cyberinfrastructure for Multi-Messenger Astrophysics project. The collaboration addressed the difficulties of open-source software development, but presented additional risks to each team. For the scientists, there was a concern of relying on external systems and lacking control in the development process. For the developers, there was a risk in supporting a user-group while maintaining core development. These issues were mitigated by creating a second Agile Scrum framework in parallel with the developers' ongoing Agile Scrum process. This Agile collaboration promoted communication, ensured that the scientists had an active role in development, and allowed the developers to evaluate and implement the scientists' software requirements. The collaboration provided benefits for each group: the scientists actuated their development by using an existing platform, and the developers utilized the scientists' use-case to improve their systems. This case study suggests that scientists and software developers can avoid scientific computing issues by collaborating and that Agile Scrum methods can address emergent concerns.

Constraints on the CKM angle $γ$ from $B^\pm\to Dh^\pm$ decays using $D\rightarrow h^\pm h^{\prime\mp}π^0$ final states

A data sample collected with the LHCb detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb$^{-1}$ is used to measure eleven $CP$ violation observables in $B^\pm\to Dh^\pm$ decays, where $h$ is either a kaon or a pion. The neutral $D$ meson decay is reconstructed in the three-body final states: $K^\pmπ^\mpπ^0$}; $π^+π^-π^0$; $K^+K^-π^0$ and the suppressed $π^\pm K^\mpπ^0$ combination. The mode where a large $CP$ asymmetry is expected, $B^\pm\to [π^\pm K^\mpπ^0]_DK^\pm$, is observed with a significance greater than seven standard deviations. The ratio of the partial width of this mode relative to that of the favoured mode, $B^\pm\to [K^\pmπ^\mpπ^0]_D K^\pm$, is $R_{{\rm ADS}(K)} = (1.27\pm0.16\pm0.02)\times 10^{-2}$. Evidence for a large $CP$ asymmetry is also seen: $A_{{\rm ADS}(K)} = -0.38\pm0.12\pm0.02$. Constraints on the CKM angle $γ$ are calculated from the eleven reported observables.

Deeply virtual Compton scattering cross section at high Bjorken $x_B$

We report high-precision measurements of the Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) cross section at high values of the Bjorken variable $x_B$. DVCS is sensitive to the Generalized Parton Distributions of the nucleon, which provide a three-dimensional description of its internal constituents. Using the exact analytic expression of the DVCS cross section for all possible polarization states of the initial and final electron and nucleon, and final state photon, we present the first experimental extraction of all four helicity-conserving Compton Form Factors (CFFs) of the nucleon as a function of $x_B$, while systematically including helicity flip amplitudes. In particular, the high accuracy of the present data demonstrates sensitivity to some very poorly known CFFs.

Determination of the argon spectral function from (e,e'p) data

The E12-14-012 experiment, performed in Jefferson Lab Hall A, has measured the $(e, e'p)$ cross section in parallel kinematics using a natural argon target. Here, we report the full results of the analysis of the data set corresponding to beam energy 2.222 GeV, and spanning the missing momentum and missing energy range $15 \lesssim p_m \lesssim 300$ MeV/c and $12 \lesssim E_m \lesssim 80$ MeV. The reduced cross section, determined as a function of $p_m$ and $E_m$ with $\approx$4\% accuracy, has been fitted using the results of Monte Carlo simulations involving a model spectral function and including the effects of final state interactions. The overall agreement between data and simulations turns out to be quite satisfactory ($χ^2$/n.d.o.f.=1.9). The resulting spectral function will provide valuable new information, needed for the interpretation of neutrino interactions in liquid argon detectors.

Development of a $^{127}$Xe calibration source for nEXO

We study a possible calibration technique for the nEXO experiment using a $^{127}$Xe electron capture source. nEXO is a next-generation search for neutrinoless double beta decay ($0νββ$) that will use a 5-tonne, monolithic liquid xenon time projection chamber (TPC). The xenon, used both as source and detection medium, will be enriched to 90% in $^{136}$Xe. To optimize the event reconstruction and energy resolution, calibrations are needed to map the position- and time-dependent detector response. The 36.3 day half-life of $^{127}$Xe and its small $Q$-value compared to that of $^{136}$Xe $0νββ$ would allow a small activity to be maintained continuously in the detector during normal operations without introducing additional backgrounds, thereby enabling in-situ calibration and monitoring of the detector response. In this work we describe a process for producing the source and preliminary experimental tests. We then use simulations to project the precision with which such a source could calibrate spatial corrections to the light and charge response of the nEXO TPC.

Double-Weak Decays of $^{124}$Xe and $^{136}$Xe in the XENON1T and XENONnT Experiments

We present results on the search for double-electron capture ($2ν\text{ECEC}$) of $^{124}$Xe and neutrinoless double-$β$ decay ($0νββ$) of $^{136}$Xe in XENON1T. We consider captures from the K- up to the N-shell in the $2ν\text{ECEC}$ signal model and measure a total half-life of $T_{1/2}^{2ν\text{ECEC}}=(1.1\pm0.2_\text{stat}\pm0.1_\text{sys})\times 10^{22}\;\text{yr}$ with a $0.87\;\text{kg}\times\text{yr}$ isotope exposure. The statistical significance of the signal is $7.0\,σ$. We use XENON1T data with $36.16\;\text{kg}\times\text{yr}$ of $^{136}$Xe exposure to search for $0νββ$. We find no evidence of a signal and set a lower limit on the half-life of $T_{1/2}^{0νββ} > 1.2 \times 10^{24}\;\text{yr}\; \text{at}\; 90\,\%\;\text{CL}$. This is the best result from a dark matter detector without an enriched target to date. We also report projections on the sensitivity of XENONnT to $0νββ$. Assuming a $275\;\text{kg}\times\text{yr}$ $^{136}$Xe exposure, the expected sensitivity is $T_{1/2}^{0νββ} > 2.1 \times 10^{25}\;\text{yr}\; \text{at}\; 90\,\%\;\text{CL}$, corresponding to an effective Majorana mass range of $\langle m_{ββ} \rangle < (0.19 - 0.59)\;\text{eV/c}^2$.

First measurement of high-energy reactor antineutrinos at Daya Bay

This Letter reports the first measurement of high-energy reactor antineutrinos at Daya Bay, with nearly 9000 inverse beta decay candidates in the prompt energy region of 8-12~MeV observed over 1958 days of data collection. A multivariate analysis is used to separate 2500 signal events from background statistically. The hypothesis of no reactor antineutrinos with neutrino energy above 10~MeV is rejected with a significance of 6.2 standard deviations. A 29\% antineutrino flux deficit in the prompt energy region of 8-11~MeV is observed compared to a recent model prediction. We provide the unfolded antineutrino spectrum above 7 MeV as a data-based reference for other experiments. This result provides the first direct observation of the production of antineutrinos from several high-$Q_β$ isotopes in commercial reactors.

First measurement of the $Z\rightarrow μ^+ μ^-$ angular coefficients in the forward region of $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

The first study of the angular distribution of $μ^+ μ^-$ pairs produced in the forward rapidity region via the Drell-Yan reaction $pp \rightarrow γ^{*}/Z +X \rightarrow l^+ l^- + X$ is presented, using data collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.1 $\rm{fb}^{-1}$. The coefficients of the five leading terms in the angular distribution are determined as a function of the dimuon transverse momentum and rapidity. GPU-based optical simulation of the DARWIN detector

Understanding propagation of scintillation light is critical for maximizing the discovery potential of next-generation liquid xenon detectors that use dual-phase time projection chamber technology. This work describes a detailed optical simulation of the DARWIN detector implemented using Chroma, a GPU-based photon tracking framework. To evaluate the framework and to explore ways of maximizing efficiency and minimizing the time of light collection, we simulate several variations of the conventional detector design. Results of these selected studies are presented. More generally, we conclude that the approach used in this work allows one to investigate alternative designs faster and in more detail than using conventional Geant4 optical simulations, making it an attractive tool to guide the development of the ultimate liquid xenon observatory.

Identification of charm jets at LHCb

The identification of charm jets is achieved at LHCb for data collected in 2015-2018 using a method based on the properties of displaced vertices reconstructed and matched with jets. The performance of this method is determined using a dijet calibration dataset recorded by the LHCb detector and selected such that the jets are unbiased in quantities used in the tagging algorithm. The charm-tagging efficiency is reported as a function of the transverse momentum of the jet. The measured efficiencies are compared to those obtained from simulation and found to be in good agreement.

In-flight gain monitoring of SPIDER's transition-edge sensor arrays

Experiments deploying large arrays of transition-edge sensors (TESs) often require a robust method to monitor gain variations with minimal loss of observing time. We propose a sensitive and non-intrusive method for monitoring variations in TES responsivity using small square waves applied to the TES bias. We construct an estimator for a TES's small-signal power response from its electrical response that is exact in the limit of strong electrothermal feedback. We discuss the application and validation of this method using flight data from SPIDER, a balloon-borne telescope that observes the polarization of the cosmic microwave background with more than 2000 TESs. This method may prove useful for future balloon- and space-based instruments, where observing time and ground control bandwidth are limited.

Joint Determination of Reactor Antineutrino Spectra from $^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu Fission by Daya Bay and PROSPECT

A joint determination of the reactor antineutrino spectra resulting from the fission of $^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu has been carried out by the Daya Bay and PROSPECT collaborations. This Letter reports the level of consistency of $^{235}$U spectrum measurements from the two experiments and presents new results from a joint analysis of both data sets. The measurements are found to be consistent. The combined analysis reduces the degeneracy between the dominant $^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu isotopes and improves the uncertainty of the $^{235}$U spectral shape to about 3\%. The ${}^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu antineutrino energy spectra are unfolded from the jointly deconvolved reactor spectra using the Wiener-SVD unfolding method, providing a data-based reference for other reactor antineutrino experiments and other applications. This is the first measurement of the $^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu spectra based on the combination of experiments at low- and highly enriched uranium reactors.

Low-Energy Physics in Neutrino LArTPCs

In this white paper, we outline some of the scientific opportunities and challenges related to detection and reconstruction of low-energy (less than 100 MeV) signatures in liquid argon time-projection chamber (LArTPC) detectors. Key takeaways are summarized as follows. 1) LArTPCs have unique sensitivity to a range of physics and astrophysics signatures via detection of event features at and below the few tens of MeV range. 2) Low-energy signatures are an integral part of GeV-scale accelerator neutrino interaction final states, and their reconstruction can enhance the oscillation physics sensitivities of LArTPC experiments. 3) BSM signals from accelerator and natural sources also generate diverse signatures in the low-energy range, and reconstruction of these signatures can increase the breadth of BSM scenarios accessible in LArTPC-based searches. 4) Neutrino interaction cross sections and other nuclear physics processes in argon relevant to sub-hundred-MeV LArTPC signatures are poorly understood. Improved theory and experimental measurements are needed. Pion decay-at-rest sources and charged particle and neutron test beams are ideal facilities for experimentally improving this understanding. 5) There are specific calibration needs in the low-energy range, as well as specific needs for control and understanding of radiological and cosmogenic backgrounds. 6) Novel ideas for future LArTPC technology that enhance low-energy capabilities should be explored. These include novel charge enhancement and readout systems, enhanced photon detection, low radioactivity argon, and xenon doping. 7) Low-energy signatures, whether steady-state or part of a supernova burst or larger GeV-scale event topology, have specific triggering, DAQ and reconstruction requirements that must be addressed outside the scope of conventional GeV-scale data collection and analysis pathways.

Measurement of $χ_{c1}(3872)$ production in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=8$ and $13$ TeV

The production cross-section of the $χ_{c1}(3872)$ state relative to the $ψ(2S)$ meson is measured using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s}=8$ and 13 TeV, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 2.0 and 5.4 fb$^{-1}$, respectively. The two mesons are reconstructed in the $J/ψπ^{+}π^{-}$ final state. The ratios of the prompt and nonprompt $χ_{c1}(3872)$ to $ψ(2S)$ production cross-sections are measured as a function of transverse momentum, $p_{\rm T}$, and rapidity, $y$, in the kinematic range $4 < p_{\rm T} < 20$ GeV/$c$ and $2.0 < y < 4.5$. The prompt ratio is found to increase with $p_{\rm T}$ independently of $y$. The double-differential cross-section ratio of $χ_{c1}(3872)$ relative to $ψ(2S)$ mesons between 13 and 8 TeV is also measured for the prompt component and observed to be consistent with unity, independent of $p_{\rm T}$ and centre-of-mass energy.

Measurement of prompt charged-particle production in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV

The differential cross-section of prompt inclusive production of long-lived charged particles in proton-proton collisions is measured using a data sample recorded by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of ${\sqrt{s} = 13\,\mathrm{TeV}}$. The data sample, collected with an unbiased trigger, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of ${5.4\,\mathrm{nb}^{-1}}$. The differential cross-section is measured as a function of transverse momentum and pseudorapidity in the ranges ${p_\mathrm{T} \in [0.08, 10)\,\mathrm{GeV}\,c^{-1}}$ and ${η\in [2.0, 4.8)}$ and is determined separately for positively and negatively charged particles. The results are compared with predictions from various hadronic-interaction models.

An improved measurement of the decay $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ and searches for the decays $B^0\toμ^+μ^-$ and $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-γ$ are performed at the LHCb experiment using data collected in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7,~8$ and $13$ TeV, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 1, 2 and 6 fb$^{-1}$, respectively. The $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ branching fraction and effective lifetime are measured to be ${\mathcal{B}}(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-)=\left(3.09^{+0.46+0.15}_{-0.43-0.11}\right)\times 10^{-9}$ and $τ(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-)=(2.07\pm 0.29\pm 0.03)$ ps, respectively, where the uncertainties include both statistical and systematic contributions. No significant signal for $B^0\toμ^+μ^-$ and $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-γ$ decays is found and the upper limits $\mathcal{B}(B^0\toμ^+μ^-)<2.6\times 10^{-10}$ and $\mathcal{B}(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-γ)<2.0\times 10^{-9}$ at 95% confidence level are determined, where the latter is limited to the range $m_{μμ} > 4.9$ GeV$/c^2$. Additionally, the ratio between the $B^0\toμ^+μ^-$ and $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ branching fractions is measured to be $\mathcal{R}_{μ^+μ^-}<0.095$ at 95% confidence level. The results are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions.

Measurement of the charm mixing parameter $y_{CP} - y_{CP}^{Kπ}$ using two-body $D^0$ meson decays

A measurement of the ratios of the effective decay widths of $D^0 \to π^-π^+$ and $D^0 \to K^-K^+$ decays over that of $D^0 \to K^-π^+$ decays is performed with the LHCb experiment using proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $13 \, \mathrm{TeV}$, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $6 \, \mathrm{fb^{-1}}$. These observables give access to the charm mixing parameters $y_{CP}^{ππ} - y_{CP}^{Kπ}$ and $y_{CP}^{KK} - y_{CP}^{Kπ}$, and are measured as $y_{CP}^{ππ} - y_{CP}^{Kπ} = (6.57 \pm 0.53 \pm 0.16) \times 10^{-3}$, $y_{CP}^{KK} - y_{CP}^{Kπ} = (7.08 \pm 0.30 \pm 0.14) \times 10^{-3}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The combination of the two measurements is $y_{CP} - y_{CP}^{Kπ} = (6.96 \pm 0.26 \pm 0.13) \times 10^{-3}$, which is four times more precise than the previous world average.

Measurement of the lifetimes of promptly produced $Ω^{0}_{c}$ and $Ξ^{0}_{c}$ baryons

A measurement of the lifetimes of the $Ω^{0}_{c}$ and $Ξ^{0}_{c}$ baryons is reported using proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of $13\text{ TeV}$, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.4\text{ fb}^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment. The $Ω^{0}_{c}$ and $Ξ^{0}_{c}$ baryons are produced directly from proton interactions and reconstructed in the $pK^{-}K^{-}π^{+}$ final state. The $Ω^{0}_{c}$ lifetime is measured to be $276.5\pm13.4\pm4.4\pm0.7\text{ fs}$, and the $Ξ^{0}_{c}$ lifetime is measured to be $148.0\pm2.3\pm2.2\pm0.2\text{ fs}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third due to the uncertainty on the $D^{0}$ lifetime. These results confirm previous LHCb measurements based on semileptonic beauty-hadron decays, which disagree with earlier results of a four times shorter $Ω^{0}_{c}$ lifetime, and provide the single most precise measurement of the $Ω^{0}_{c}$ lifetime.

Measurement of the nuclear modification factor and prompt charged particle production in $p\mathrm{Pb}$ and $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\scriptscriptstyle\mathrm{NN}}}=5\,\mathrm{TeV}$

The production of prompt charged particles in proton-lead collisions and in proton-proton collisions at the nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy ${\sqrt{s_{\scriptscriptstyle\mathrm{NN}}}=5\,\mathrm{TeV}}$ is studied at LHCb as a function of pseudorapidity ($η$) and transverse momentum ($p_{\mathrm{T}}$) with respect to the proton beam direction. The nuclear modification factor for charged particles is determined as a function of $η$ between ${-4.8<η<-2.5}$ (backward region) and ${2.0<η<4.8}$ (forward region), and $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ between ${0.2<p_{\mathrm{T}}<8.0\,\mathrm{GeV}/c}$. The results show a suppression of charged particle production in proton-lead collisions relative to proton-proton collisions in the forward region and an enhancement in the backward region for $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ larger than $1.5\,\mathrm{GeV}/c$. This measurement constrains nuclear PDFs and saturation models at previously unexplored values of the parton momentum fraction down to $10^{-6}$.

Measurement of the photon polarization in $Λ_b \to Λγ$ decays

The photon polarization in $b \to s γ$ transitions is measured for the first time in radiative b-baryon decays exploiting the unique spin structure of $Λ_b \to Λγ$ decays. A data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $6\;fb^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment in $pp$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $13\;TeV$ is used. The photon polarization is measured to be $α_γ= 0.82^{\,+\,0.17\,+\,0.04}_{\,-\,0.26\,-\,0.13}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This result is in agreement with the Standard Model prediction and previous measurements in b-meson decays. Charge-parity breaking effects are studied for the first time in this observable and found to be consistent with $CP$ symmetry.

Measurement of the W boson mass

The $W$ boson mass is measured using proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 fb$^{-1}$ recorded during 2016 by the LHCb experiment. With a simultaneous fit of the muon $q/p_T$ distribution of a sample of $W \to μν$ decays and the $ϕ^*$ distribution of a sample of $Z\toμμ$ decays the $W$ boson mass is determined to be \begin{equation*} m_{W} = 80354 \pm 23_{\rm stat} \pm 10_{\rm exp} \pm 17_{\rm theory} \pm 9_{\rm PDF}~\mathrm{MeV}, \end{equation*} where uncertainties correspond to contributions from statistical, experimental systematic, theoretical and parton distribution function sources. This is an average of results based on three recent global parton distribution function sets. The measurement agrees well with the prediction of the global electroweak fit and with previous measurements.

NEXO: Neutrinoless double beta decay search beyond $10^{28}$ year half-life sensitivity

The nEXO neutrinoless double beta decay experiment is designed to use a time projection chamber and 5000 kg of isotopically enriched liquid xenon to search for the decay in $^{136}$Xe. Progress in the detector design, paired with higher fidelity in its simulation and an advanced data analysis, based on the one used for the final results of EXO-200, produce a sensitivity prediction that exceeds the half-life of $10^{28}$ years. Specifically, improvements have been made in the understanding of production of scintillation photons and charge as well as of their transport and reconstruction in the detector. The more detailed knowledge of the detector construction has been paired with more assays for trace radioactivity in different materials. In particular, the use of custom electroformed copper is now incorporated in the design, leading to a substantial reduction in backgrounds from the intrinsic radioactivity of detector materials. Furthermore, a number of assumptions from previous sensitivity projections have gained further support from interim work validating the nEXO experiment concept. Together these improvements and updates suggest that the nEXO experiment will reach a half-life sensitivity of $1.35\times 10^{28}$ yr at 90% confidence level in 10 years of data taking, covering the parameter space associated with the inverted neutrino mass ordering, along with a significant portion of the parameter space for the normal ordering scenario, for almost all nuclear matrix elements. The effects of backgrounds deviating from the nominal values used for the projections are also illustrated, concluding that the nEXO design is robust against a number of imperfections of the model.

Using the~decay $Λ_b^0\rightarrow Λ_c^+ π^+ π^-π^-$ as a normalisation channel, the ratio of branching fractions is measured to be $$ \frac { {\mathcal{B}} ( Λ_b^0\rightarrow D^+ p π^-π^- ) } { {\mathcal{B}} ( Λ_b^0\rightarrow Λ_c^+ π^+ π^-π^- ) } \times \frac { {\mathcal{B}} ( D^+ \rightarrow K^-π^+π^+) } { {\mathcal{B}} ( Λ_c^+ \rightarrow p K^-π^+ ) } = ( 5.35 \pm 0.21 \pm 0.16 ) \% \,, $$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The ratio of branching fractions for $Λ_b^0\rightarrow D^{*+} p π^-π^-$ and $Λ_b^0\rightarrow D^+ p π^-π^-$ decays is found to be $$ \frac{ {\mathcal{B}} ( Λ_b^0\rightarrow D^{*+} p π^-π^- )} { {\mathcal{B}} ( Λ_b^0\rightarrow D^{+} p π^-π^- )} \times ( {\mathcal{B}}( D^{*+} \rightarrow π^0 ) + {\mathcal{B}}( D^{*+} \rightarrow γ)) = ( 61.3 \pm 4.3 \pm 4.0 ) \% \,. $$

Observation of an exotic narrow doubly charmed tetraquark

Conventional hadronic matter consists of baryons and mesons made of three quarks and quark-antiquark pairs, respectively. The observation of a new type of hadronic state, a doubly charmed tetraquark containing two charm quarks, an anti-$u$ and an anti-$d$ quark, is reported using data collected by the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. This exotic state with a mass of about 3875 MeV$/c^2$ manifests itself as a narrow peak in the mass spectrum of $D^0D^0π^+$ mesons just below the $D^{*+}D^0$ mass threshold. The near threshold mass together with a strikingly narrow width reveals the resonance nature of the state.

Observation of the $B^0\rightarrow\overline{D}^{*0}K^{+}π^{-}$ and $B_s^0\rightarrow\overline{D}^{*0}K^{-}π^{+}$ decays

The first observations of $B^0\rightarrow\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0}K^{+}π^{-}$ and $B_s^0\rightarrow\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0}K^{-}π^{+}$ decays are presented, and their branching fractions relative to that of the $B^0\rightarrow\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0}π^{+}π^{-}$ decay are reported. These modes can potentially be used to investigate the spectroscopy of charm and charm-strange resonances and to determine the angle $γ$ of the CKM unitarity triangle. It is also important to understand them as a source of potential background in determinations of $γ$ from $B^{+}\rightarrow DK^{+}$ and $B^{0}\rightarrow DK^{+}π^{-}$ decays. The analysis is based on a sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.4 ~\rm{fb}^{-1}$ of proton--proton collision data at $13 ~\rm{TeV}$ centre-of-mass energy recorded with the LHCb detector. The $\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0}$ mesons are fully reconstructed in the $\overline{D}^{0}π^{0}$ and $\overline{D}^{0}γ$ channels, with the $\overline{D}^{0} \rightarrow K^{+}π^{-}$ decay. A novel weighting method is used to subtract background while simultaneously applying an event-by-event efficiency correction to account for resonant structures in the decays.

Observation of the suppressed $Λ_b^0\to D p K^-$ decay with $D\to K^+ π^-$ and measurement of its $C\!P$ asymmetry

A study of $Λ_b^0$ baryon decays to the $DpK^-$ final state is presented based on a proton-proton collision data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb detector. Two $Λ_b^0$ decays are considered, $Λ_b^0\to DpK^-$ with $D\to K^-π^+$ and $D\to K^+π^-$, where $D$ represents a superposition of $D^0$ and $\overline{D}^0$ states. The latter process is expected to be suppressed relative to the former, and is observed for the first time. The ratio of branching fractions of the two decays is measured, and the $C\!P$ asymmetry of the suppressed mode, which is sensitive to the CKM angle $γ$, is also reported.

Observation of two new excited ${\itΞ}_b^0$ states decaying to ${\itΛ}_b^0 K^-π^+$

Two narrow resonant states are observed in the ${\itΛ}_b^0 K^-π^+$ mass spectrum using a data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13$~\rm TeV$, collected by the LHCb experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $6~{\rm fb}^{-1}$. The minimal quark content of the ${\itΛ}_b^0 K^-π^+$ system indicates that these are excited ${\itΞ}_b^0$ baryons. The masses of the ${\itΞ}_b(6327)^0$ and ${\itΞ}_b(6333)^0$ states are $m({\itΞ}_b(6327)^0) = 6327.28 ^{\,+\,0.23}_{\,-\,0.21} \pm 0.12 \pm 0.24~{\rm MeV}$ and $m({\itΞ}_b(6333)^0) = 6332.69 ^{\,+\,0.17}_{\,-\,0.18} \pm 0.03 \pm 0.22~{\rm MeV}$, respectively, with a mass splitting of $Δm = 5.41 ^{\,+\,0.26}_{\,-\,0.27} \pm 0.12 ~{\rm MeV}$, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and due to the ${\itΛ}_b^0$ mass measurement. The measured natural widths of these states are consistent with zero, with upper limits of $Γ({\itΞ}_b(6327)^0)<2.20~(2.56) ~{\rm MeV}$ and $Γ({\itΞ}_b(6333)^0)<1.60~(1.92) ~{\rm MeV}$ at a $90\%~(95\%)$ credibility level. The significance of the two-peak hypothesis is larger than nine (five) Gaussian standard deviations compared to the no-peak (one-peak) hypothesis. The masses, widths and resonant structure of the new states are in good agreement with the expectations for a doublet of 1$D$ ${\itΞ}_b^0$ resonances.

Precise determination of the B0s-B0sbar oscillation frequency

Mesons comprising a beauty quark and a strange quark can oscillate between particle (B0s) and antiparticle (B0s) flavour eigenstates, with a frequency given by the mass difference between heavy and light mass eigenstates, deltams. Here we present ameasurement of deltams using B0s2DsPi decays produced in proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The oscillation frequency is found to be deltams = 17.7683 +- 0.0051 +- 0.0032 ps-1, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This measurement improves upon the current deltams precision by a factor of two. We combine this result with previous LHCb measurements to determine deltams = 17.7656 +- 0.0057 ps-1, which is the legacy measurement of the original LHCb detector.

Scintillator Tile Batch Test of CEPC AHCAL

Hadron calorimeter (HCAL) is an essential sub-detector of the baseline detector system for Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC). We plan to build an Analog Hadron CALorimeter (AHCAL) prototype based on the Particle Flow Algorithm (PFA). The AHCAL of CEPC uses steel as absorber and scintillator tiles read out by Silicon Photo-Multipliers (SiPMs) as sensitive medium. The energy linearity and resolution of the calorimeter depends on the light yield uniformity of sensitive medium. It is essential to qualify the entire detector production in order to select scintillator tiles with light yield uniform within 10\%. An automated batch test platform has been designed with 144 channels, an automated 3D servo motor. The paper summarizes the tests performed on more than 15000 scintillator tiles. The measured light yield, corrected for the set-up response non-uniformity, is around 12.9 p.e. . About 91.6\% of scintillators (14219 pieces) are qualified within 10\% of light yield window.

Search for massive long-lived particles decaying semileptonically at sqrt(s)=13 TeV

A search is performed for massive long-lived particles (LLP) decaying semileptonically into a muon and two quarks. Two kinds of LLP production processes were considered. In the first, a Higgs-like boson with mass from 30 to 200 GeV is produced by gluon fusion and decays into two LLPs. The analysis covers LLP mass values from 10 GeV up to about one half the Higgs-like boson mass. The second LLP production mode is directly from quark interactions, with LLP masses from 10 to 90 GeV. The LLP lifetimes considered range from 5 to 200 ps. This study uses LHCb data collected from proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 1/fb. No evidence of these long-lived states has been observed, and upper limits on the production cross-section times branching ratio have been set for each model considered.

Study of the doubly charmed tetraquark $T_{cc}^+$

An exotic narrow state in the $D^0D^0π^+$ mass spectrum just below the $D^{*+}D^0$ mass threshold is studied using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb$^{-1}$ acquired with the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The state is consistent with the ground isoscalar $T^+_{cc}$ tetraquark with a quark content of $cc\bar{u}\bar{d}$ and spin-parity quantum numbers $\mathrm{J}^{\mathrm{P}}=1^+$. Study of the $DD$ mass spectra disfavours interpretation of the resonance as the isovector state. The decay structure via intermediate off-shell $D^{*+}$ mesons is confirmed by the $D^0π^+$ mass distribution. The mass of the resonance and its coupling to the $D^{*}D$ system are analysed. Resonance parameters including the pole position, scattering length, effective range and compositeness are measured to reveal important information about the nature of the $T^+_{cc}$ state. In addition, an unexpected dependence of the production rate on track multiplicity is observed.

Test of lepton universality in beauty-quark decays

The Standard Model of particle physics currently provides our best description of fundamental particles and their interactions. The theory predicts that the different charged leptons, the electron, muon and tau, have identical electroweak interaction strengths. Previous measurements have shown a wide range of particle decays are consistent with this principle of lepton universality. This article presents evidence for the breaking of lepton universality in beauty-quark decays, with a significance of 3.1 standard deviations, based on proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at CERN's Large Hadron Collider. The measurements are of processes in which a beauty meson transforms into a strange meson with the emission of either an electron and a positron, or a muon and an antimuon. If confirmed by future measurements, this violation of lepton universality would imply physics beyond the Standard Model, such as a new fundamental interaction between quarks and leptons.

The measurements are performed using proton-proton collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9\, \mathrm{fb}^{-1}$. The results are consistent with the Standard Model and previous tests of lepton universality in related decay modes. The first observation of $B^0 \to K^0_S e^+ e^-$ and $B^+ \to K^{*+} e^+ e^-$ decays is reported.

The cross-section measurement for the $^3{\textrm H}(e,e'K^+)nnΛ$ reaction

The small binding energy of the hypertrition leads to predictions of non-existence of bound hypernuclei for isotriplet three-body systems such as $nnΛ$. However, invariant mass spectroscopy at GSI has reported events that may be interpreted as the bound $nnΛ$ state. The $nnΛ$ state was sought by missing-mass spectroscopy via the $(e,e'K^+)$ reaction at Jefferson Lab's experimental Hall A. The present experiment has higher sensitivity to the $nnΛ$-state investigation in terms of better precision by a factor of about three. The analysis shown in this article focuses on the derivation of the reaction cross-section for the $^3{\rm{H}}(γ^{*},K^+)\textrm{X}$ reaction. Events that were detected in an acceptance, where a Monte Carlo simulation could reproduce the data well ($|δp/p| < 4\%$), were analyzed to minimize the systematic uncertainty. No significant structures were observed with the acceptance cuts, and the upper limits of the production cross-section of the $nnΛ$ state were obtained to be $21$ and $31~\rm{nb/sr}$ at the $90\%$ confidence level when theoretical predictions of $(-B_Λ, Γ) = (0.25,0.8)$ and $(0.55, 4.7)$ MeV, respectively, were assumed. The cross-section result provides valuable information for examining the existence of $nnΛ$.

Measurement of the Ar(e,e$^\prime$ p) and Ti(e,e$^\prime$ p) cross sections in Jefferson Lab Hall A

The E12-14-012 experiment, performed in Jefferson Lab Hall A, has collected exclusive electron-scattering data (e,e$^\prime$p) in parallel kinematics using natural argon and natural titanium targets. Here, we report the first results of the analysis of the data set corresponding to beam energy of 2,222 MeV, electron scattering angle 21.5 deg, and proton emission angle -50 deg. The differential cross sections, measured with $\sim$4% uncertainty, have been studied as a function of missing energy and missing momentum, and compared to the results of Monte Carlo simulations, obtained from a model based on the Distorted Wave Impulse Approximation.

Ruling out color transparency in quasi-elastic $^{12}$C(e,e'p) up to $Q^2$ of 14.2 (GeV/c)$^2$

Quasielastic $^{12}$C$(e,e'p)$ scattering was measured at space-like 4-momentum transfer squared $Q^2$~=~8, 9.4, 11.4, and 14.2 (GeV/c)$^2$, the highest ever achieved to date. Nuclear transparency for this reaction was extracted by comparing the measured yield to that expected from a plane-wave impulse approximation calculation without any final state interactions. The measured transparency was consistent with no $Q^2$ dependence, up to proton momenta of 8.5~GeV/c, ruling out the quantum chromodynamics effect of color transparency at the measured $Q^2$ scales in exclusive $(e,e'p)$ reactions. These results impose strict constraints on models of color transparency for protons.

Search for the doubly charmed baryon $\itΞ_{cc}^{+}$ in the $\itΞ_{c}^{+} π^{-} π^{+}$ final state

A search for the doubly charmed baryon $\itΞ_{cc}^{+}$ is performed in the $\itΞ_{c}^{+} π^{-} π^{+}$ invariant-mass spectrum, where the $\itΞ_{c}^{+}$ baryon is reconstructed in the $p K^{-} π^{+}$ final state. The study uses proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13$\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}$, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 5.4$\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$. No significant signal is observed in the invariant-mass range of 3.4$-$3.8$\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}/c^2$. Upper limits are set on the ratio of branching fractions multiplied by the production cross-section with respect to the $\itΞ_{cc}^{++} \rightarrow (\itΞ_{c}^{+} \rightarrow p K^{-} π^{+}) π^{+}$ decay for different $\itΞ_{cc}^{+}$ mass and lifetime hypotheses in the rapidity range from 2.0 to 4.5 and the transverse momentum range from 2.5 to 25$\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}/c$. The results from this search are combined with a previously published search for the $\itΞ_{cc}^{+} \rightarrow \itΛ_{c}^{+} K^{-} π^{+}$ decay mode, yielding a maximum local significance of 4.0 standard deviations around the mass of 3620$\mathrm{\,Me\kern -0.1em V}/c^2$, including systematic uncertainties. Taking into account the look-elsewhere effect in the 3.5$-$3.7$\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}/c^2$ mass window, the combined global significance is 2.9 standard deviations including systematic uncertainties.

Study of the $B_c^+$ decays into charmonia and three light hadrons

Using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9fb^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb detector, seven decay modes of the $B_c^+$ meson into a $J/ψ$ or $ψ(2S)$ meson and three charged hadrons, kaons or pions, are studied. The decays $B_c^+\rightarrow ( ψ(2S) \rightarrow J/ψπ^+ π^-)π^+ $, $B_c^+\rightarrow ψ(2S)π^+π^+π^-$, $B_c^+\rightarrow J/ψK^+π^+π^-$ and $B_c^+\rightarrow K^+K^+K^-$ are observed for the first time, and evidence for the $B_c^+\rightarrow ψ(2S)K^+K^-π^+$ decay is found, where $J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$ mesons are reconstructed in their dimuon decay modes. The ratios of branching fractions between the different $B_c^+$ decays are reported as well as the fractions of the decays proceeding via intermediate resonances. The results largely support the factorisation approach used for a theoretical description of the studied decays.

The EXO-200 detector, part II: Auxiliary Systems

The EXO-200 experiment searched for neutrinoless double-beta decay of $^{136}$Xe with a single-phase liquid xenon detector. It used an active mass of 110 kg of 80.6%-enriched liquid xenon in an ultra-low background time projection chamber with ionization and scintillation detection and readout. This paper describes the design and performance of the various support systems necessary for detector operation, including cryogenics, xenon handling, and controls. Novel features of the system were driven by the need to protect the thin-walled detector chamber containing the liquid xenon, to achieve high chemical purity of the Xe, and to maintain thermal uniformity across the detector.

Cloud-cloud collision as drivers of the chemical complexity in Galactic Centre molecular clouds

G+0.693-0.03 is a quiescent molecular cloud located within the Sagittarius B2 (Sgr B2) star-forming complex. Recent spectral surveys have shown that it represents one of the most prolific repositories of complex organic species in the Galaxy. The origin of such chemical complexity, along with the small-scale physical structure and properties of G+0.693-0.03, remains a mystery. In this paper, we report the study of multiple molecules with interferometric observations in combination with single-dish data in G+0.693-0.03. Despite the lack of detection of continuum source, we find small-scale (0.2 pc) structures within this cloud. The analysis of the molecular emission of typical shock tracers such as SiO, HNCO, and CH$_3$OH unveiled two molecular components, peaking at velocities of 57 and 75 km s$^{-1}$. They are found to be interconnected in both space and velocity. The position-velocity diagrams show features that match with the observational signatures of a cloud-cloud collision. Additionally, we detect three series of class \rom{1} methanol masers known to appear in shocked gas, supporting the cloud-cloud collision scenario. From the maser emission we provide constraints on the gas kinetic temperatures ($\sim$30-150 K) and H$_2$ densities (10$^4$-10$^5$ cm$^{-2}$). These properties are similar to those found for the starburst galaxy NGC253 also using class \rom{1} methanol masers, suggested to be associated with a cloud-cloud collision. We conclude that shocks driven by the possible cloud-cloud collision is likely the most important mechanism responsible for the high level of chemical complexity observed in G+0.693-0.03.

Improved Constraints on Sterile Neutrino Mixing from Disappearance Searches in the MINOS, MINOS+, Daya Bay, and Bugey-3 Experiments

Searches for electron antineutrino, muon neutrino, and muon antineutrino disappearance driven by sterile neutrino mixing have been carried out by the Daya Bay and MINOS+ collaborations. This Letter presents the combined results of these searches, along with exclusion results from the Bugey-3 reactor experiment, framed in a minimally extended four-neutrino scenario. Significantly improved constraints on the $θ_{μe}$ mixing angle are derived that constitute the most stringent limits to date over five orders of magnitude in the sterile mass-squared splitting $Δm^2_{41}$, excluding the 90% C.L. sterile-neutrino parameter space allowed by the LSND and MiniBooNE observations at 90% CL$_s$ for $Δm^2_{41}<5\,$eV$^2$.Furthermore, the LSND and MiniBooNE 99% C.L. allowed regions are excluded at 99% CL$_s$ for $Δm^2_{41}$ $<$ 1.2 eV$^2$.

Measurement of the scintillation and ionization response of liquid xenon at MeV energies in the EXO-200 experiment

Liquid xenon (LXe) is employed in a number of current and future detectors for rare event searches. We use the EXO-200 experimental data to measure the absolute scintillation and ionization yields generated by $γ$ interactions from $^{228}$Th (2615~keV), $^{226}$Ra (1764~keV) and $^{60}$Co (1332~keV and 1173~keV) calibration sources, over a range of electric fields. The $W$-value that defines the recombination-independent energy scale is measured to be $11.5~\pm~0.5$~(syst.)~$\pm~0.1$~(stat.) eV. These data are also used to measure the recombination fluctuations in the number of electrons and photons produced by the calibration sources at the MeV-scale, which deviate from extrapolations of lower-energy data. Additionally, a semi-empirical model for the energy resolution of the detector is developed, which is used to constrain the recombination efficiency, i.e., the fraction of recombined electrons that result in the emission of a detectable photon. Detailed measurements of the absolute charge and light yields for MeV-scale electron recoils are important for predicting the performance of future neutrinoless double beta decay detectors.

Measurement of the Spectral Shape of the beta-decay of 137Xe to the Ground State of 137Cs in EXO-200 and Comparison with Theory

We report on a comparison between the theoretically predicted and experimentally measured spectra of the first-forbidden non-unique $β$-decay transition $^{137}\textrm{Xe}(7/2^-)\to\,^{137}\textrm{Cs}(7/2^+)$. The experimental data were acquired by the EXO-200 experiment during a deployment of an AmBe neutron source. The ultra-low background environment of EXO-200, together with dedicated source deployment and analysis procedures, allowed for collection of a pure sample of the decays, with an estimated signal-to-background ratio of more than 99-to-1 in the energy range from 1075 to 4175 keV. In addition to providing a rare and accurate measurement of the first-forbidden non-unique $β$-decay shape, this work constitutes a novel test of the calculated electron spectral shapes in the context of the reactor antineutrino anomaly and spectral bump.

Novel observation of isospin structure of short-range correlations in calcium isotopes

Short Range Correlations (SRCs) have been identified as being responsible for the high momentum tail of the nucleon momentum distribution, n(k). Hard, short-range interactions of nucleon pairs generate the high momentum tail and imprint a universal character on n(k) for all nuclei at large momentum. Triple coincidence experiments have shown a strong dominance of np pairs, but these measurements involve large final state interactions. This paper presents the results from Jefferson Lab experiment E08014 which measured inclusive electron scattering cross-section from Ca isotopes. By comparing the inclusive cross section from 48Ca to 40Ca in a kinematic region dominated by SRCs we provide a new way to study the isospin structure of SRCs.

Observations of a GX 301-2 Apastron Flare with the X-Calibur Hard X-Ray Polarimeter Supported by NICER, the Swift XRT and BAT, and Fermi GBM

The accretion-powered X-ray pulsar GX 301-2 was observed with the balloon-borne X-Calibur hard X-ray polarimeter during late December 2018, with contiguous observations by the NICER X-ray telescope, the Swift X-ray Telescope and Burst Alert Telescope, and the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor spanning several months. The observations detected the pulsar in a rare apastron flaring state coinciding with a significant spin-up of the pulsar discovered with the Fermi GBM. The X-Calibur, NICER, and Swift observations reveal a pulse profile strongly dominated by one main peak, and the NICER and Swift data show strong variation of the profile from pulse to pulse. The X-Calibur observations constrain for the first time the linear polarization of the 15-35 keV emission from a highly magnetized accreting neutron star, indicating a polarization degree of (27+38-27)% (90% confidence limit) averaged over all pulse phases. We discuss the spin-up and the X-ray spectral and polarimetric results in the context of theoretical predictions. We conclude with a discussion of the scientific potential of future observations of highly magnetized neutron stars with the more sensitive follow-up mission XL-Calibur.

On the Shannon entropy power on Riemannian manifolds and Ricci flow

In this paper, we prove the concavity of the Shannon entropy power for the heat equation associated with the Laplacian or the Witten Laplacian on complete Riemannian manifolds with suitable curvature-dimension condition and on compact super Ricci flows. Under suitable curvature-dimension condition, we prove that the rigidity models of the Shannon entropy power are Einstein or quasi Einstein manifolds with Hessian solitons. Moreover, we prove the convexity of the Shannon entropy power for the conjugate heat equation introduced by G. Perelman on Ricci flow and that the corresponding rigidity models are the shrinking Ricci solitons. As an application, we prove the entropy isoperimetric inequality on complete Riemannian manifolds with non-negative (Bakry-Emery) Ricci curvature and the maximal volume growth condition.

Pattern formation of the three-layer Saffman-Taylor problem in a radial Hele-Shaw cell

The three-layer Saffman-Taylor problem introduces two coupled moving interfaces separating the three fluids. A very recent weakly nonlinear analysis of this problem in a radial Hele-Shaw cell setup has shown that the morphologies of the emerging fingering patterns strongly depend on the initial thickness of the intermediate layer connecting the two interfaces. Here we go beyond the weakly nonlinear regime and explore full nonlinear interfacial dynamics using a spectrally accurate boundary integral method. We quantify the nonlinear instability of both interfaces as the relevant physical parameters (e.g., viscosities and surface tensions) are varied and show that our nonlinear computations are in good agreement with the experimental observations and the weakly nonlinear analysis. Nonlinear simulations reveal that due to the existence of a second interface, the classical highly branched morphologies are replaced by less unstable structures in which finger tip-splitting and finger competition phenomena are evidently restrained as the initial annulus' thickness is reduced. In addition, these novels patterns develop fingers with a series of low-amplitude bumps at their tips, associated with the enhanced growth of high-frequency modes promoted by the increasing coupling strength of interfaces.

Probing few-body nuclear dynamics via 3H and 3He (e,e'p)pn cross-section measurements

We report the first measurement of the \eep three-body breakup reaction cross sections in helium-3 ($^3$He) and tritium ($^3$H) at large momentum transfer ($\langle Q^2 \rangle \approx 1.9$ (GeV/c)$^2$) and $x_B>1$ kinematics, where the cross section should be sensitive to quasielastic (QE) scattering from single nucleons. The data cover missing momenta $40 \le p_{miss} \le 500$ MeV/c that, in the QE limit with no rescattering, equals the initial momentum of the probed nucleon. The measured cross sections are compared with state-of-the-art ab-initio calculations. Overall good agreement, within $\pm20\%$, is observed between data and calculations for the full $p_{miss}$ range for $^3$H and for $100 \le p_{miss} \le 350$ MeV/c for $^3$He. Including the effects of rescattering of the outgoing nucleon improves agreement with the data at $p_{miss} > 250$ MeV/c and suggests contributions from charge-exchange (SCX) rescattering. The isoscalar sum of $^3$He plus $^3$H, which is largely insensitive to SCX, is described by calculations to within the accuracy of the data over the entire $p_{miss}$ range. This validates current models of the ground state of the three-nucleon system up to very high initial nucleon momenta of $500$ MeV/c.

Study of muonium emission from laser-ablated silica aerogel

The emission of muonium ($μ^+e^-$) atoms into vacuum from silica aerogel with laser ablation on its surface was studied with various ablation structures at room temperature using the subsurface muon beams at TRIUMF and Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). Laser ablation was applied to produce holes or grooves with typical dimensions of a few hundred $μ$m to a few mm, except for some extreme conditions. The measured emission rate tends to be higher for larger fractions of ablation opening and for shallower depths. More than a few ablation structures reach the emission rates similar to the highest achieved in the past measurements. The emission rate is found to be stable at least for a couple of days. Measurements of spin precession amplitudes for the produced muonium atoms and remaining muons in a magnetic field determine a muonium formation fraction of $(65.5 \pm 1.8)$%. The precession of the polarized muonium atoms is also observed clearly in vacuum. A projection of the emission rates measured at TRIUMF to the corresponding rates at J-PARC is demonstrated taking the different beam condition into account reasonably.

Thermal transport across nanometre gaps: phonon transmission vs air conduction

Heat transfer between two surfaces separated by a nanometre gap is important for a number of applications ranging from spaced head disk systems, scanning thermal microscopy and thermal transport in aerogels. At these separation distances, near field radiative heat transfer competes with heat transfer mediated by phonons. Here we quantify the contribution of phonon assisted heat transfer between apolar solids using lattice dynamics combined with ab-initio calculations. We clearly demonstrate that phonons dominate heat transfer for subnanometre gaps. Strikingly, we conclude that even in the situation where the gap is filled with air molecules, phonons provide the dominant energy channel between the two solids nearly in contact. Our results predict orders of magnitude enhanced phonon heat transfer compared to previous works and bring forward a methodology to analyse phonon transmission across nanoscale vacuum gaps between apolar materials.

Mapping Photocathode Quantum Efficiency with Ghost Imaging

Measuring the quantum efficiency (QE) map of a photocathode injector typically requires laser scanning, an invasive operation that involves modifying the injector laser focus and rastering the focused laser spot across the photocathode surface. Raster scanning interrupts normal operation and takes considerable time to setup. In this paper, we demonstrate a novel method of measuring the QE map using a ghost imaging framework that correlates the injector laser spatial variation over time with the total charge yield. Ghost imaging enables passive, real-time monitoring of the QE map without manually modifying the injector laser or interrupting injector operation. We first demonstrate the method at the UCLA Pegasus photoinjector with the help of a digital micromirror device (DMD) and a piezoelectric mirror to increase our control of the overall transverse variance of the illumination profile. The reconstruction algorithm parameters are fine-tuned using simulations and the results are validated against the ground truth map acquired using the traditional rastering method. Finally, we apply the technique to data acquired parasitically from the LCLS photoinjector, showing the feasibility of this method to retrieve a QE map without interrupting normal operation.

Measurements of electron transport in liquid and gas Xenon using a laser-driven photocathode

Measurements of electron drift properties in liquid and gaseous xenon are reported. The electrons are generated by the photoelectric effect in a semi-transparent gold photocathode driven in transmission mode with a pulsed ultraviolet laser. The charges drift and diffuse in a small chamber at various electric fields and a fixed drift distance of 2.0 cm. At an electric field of 0.5 kV/cm, the measured drift velocities and corresponding temperature coefficients respectively are $1.97 \pm 0.04$ mm/$μ$s and $(-0.69\pm0.05)$\%/K for liquid xenon, and $1.42 \pm 0.03$ mm/$μ$s and $(+0.11\pm0.01)$\%/K for gaseous xenon at 1.5 bar. In addition, we measure longitudinal diffusion coefficients of $25.7 \pm 4.6$ cm$^2$/s and $149 \pm 23$ cm$^2$/s, for liquid and gas, respectively. The quantum efficiency of the gold photocathode is studied at the photon energy of 4.73 eV in liquid and gaseous xenon, and vacuum. These charge transport properties and the behavior of photocathodes in a xenon environment are important in designing and calibrating future large scale noble liquid detectors.

On the shape of the $\bar d-\bar u$ asymmetry

Using data from a recent reanalysis of neutron structure functions extracted from inclusive proton and deuteron deep-inelastic scattering (DIS), we re-examine the constraints on the shape of the $\bar d-\bar u$ asymmetry in the proton at large parton momentum fractions $x$. A global analysis of the proton-neutron structure function difference from BCDMS, NMC, SLAC and Jefferson Lab DIS measurements, and of Fermilab Drell-Yan lepton-pair production cross sections, suggests that existing data can be well described with $\bar d > \bar u$ for all values of $x$ currently accessible. We compare the shape of the fitted $\bar d-\bar u$ distributions with expectations from nonperturbative models based on chiral symmetry breaking, which can be tested by upcoming Drell-Yan data from the SeaQuest experiment at larger values of $x$.

Reflectance of Silicon Photomultipliers at Vacuum Ultraviolet Wavelengths

Characterization of the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) reflectance of silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) is important for large-scale SiPM-based photodetector systems. We report the angular dependence of the specular reflectance in a vacuum of SiPMs manufactured by Fondazionc Bruno Kessler (FBK) and Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. (HPK) over wavelengths ranging from 120 nm to 280 nm. Refractive index and extinction coefficient of the thin silicon-dioxide film deposited on the surface of the FBK SiPMs are derived from reflectance data of a FBK silicon wafer with the same deposited oxide film as SiPMs. The diffuse reflectance of SiPMs is also measured at 193 nm. Reflectivity and PDE of VUV4 Hamamatsu SiPMs in Liquid Xenon

Understanding reflective properties of materials and photodetection efficiency (PDE) of photodetectors is important for optimizing energy resolution and sensitivity of the next generation neutrinoless double beta decay, direct detection dark matter, and neutrino oscillation experiments that will use noble liquid gases, such as nEXO, DARWIN, DarkSide-20k, and DUNE. Little information is currently available about reflectivity and PDE in liquid noble gases, because such measurements are difficult to conduct in a cryogenic environment and at short enough wavelengths. Here we report a measurement of specular reflectivity and relative PDE of Hamamatsu VUV4 silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) with 50 micrometer micro-cells conducted with xenon scintillation light (~175 nm) in liquid xenon. The specular reflectivity at 15 deg. incidence of three samples of VUV4 SiPMs is found to be 30.4+/-1.4%, 28.6+/-1.3%, and 28.0+/-1.3%, respectively. The PDE at normal incidence differs by +/-8% (standard deviation) among the three devices. The angular dependence of the reflectivity and PDE was also measured for one of the SiPMs. Both the reflectivity and PDE decrease as the angle of incidence increases. This is the first measurement of an angular dependence of PDE and reflectivity of a SiPM in liquid xenon.

Repetitive single electron spin readout in silicon

Single electron spins confined in silicon quantum dots hold great promise as a quantum computing architecture with demonstrations of long coherence times, high-fidelity quantum logic gates, basic quantum algorithms and device scalability. While single-shot spin detection is now a laboratory routine, the need for quantum error correction in a large-scale quantum computing device demands a quantum non-demolition (QND) implementation. Unlike conventional counterparts, the QND spin readout imposes minimal disturbance to the probed spin polarization and can therefore be repeated to extinguish measurement errors. However, it has remained elusive for an electron spin in silicon as it involves exquisite exposure of the system to the external circuitry for readout while maintaining the coherence and integrity of the qubit. Here we show that an electron spin qubit in silicon can be measured in a highly non-demolition manner by probing another electron spin in a neighboring dot Ising-coupled to the qubit spin. The high non-demolition fidelity (99% on average) enables over 20 readout repetitions of a single spin state, yielding an overall average measurement fidelity of up to 95% within 1.2 ms. We further demonstrate that our repetitive QND readout protocol can realize heralded high-fidelity (> 99.6%) ground-state preparation. Our QND-based measurement and preparation, mediated by a second qubit of the same kind, will allow for a new class of quantum information protocols with electron spins in silicon without compromising the architectural homogeneity.

Calculations with spectroscopic accuracy: energies and transition rates in the nitrogen isoelectronic sequence from Ar XII to Zn XXIV

Combined relativistic configuration interaction and many-body perturbation calculations are performed for the 359 fine-structure levels of the $2s^2 2p^3$, $2s 2p^4$, $2p^5$, $2s^2 2p^2 3l$, $2s 2p^3 3l$, $2p^4 3l$, and $2s^2 2p^2 4l$ configurations in N-like ions from Ar XII to Zn XXIV. A complete and consistent data set of energies, wavelengths, radiative rates, oscillator strengths, and line strengths for all possible electric dipole, magnetic dipole, electric quadrupole, and magnetic quadrupole transitions among the 359 levels are given for each ion. We report second- and third-harmonic generation in monolayer MoS$_\mathrm{2}$ as a tool for imaging and accurately characterizing the material's nonlinear optical properties under 1560 nm excitation. Using a surface nonlinear optics treatment, we derive expressions relating experimental measurements to second- and third-order nonlinear sheet susceptibility magnitudes, obtaining values of $|χ_s^{(2)}|=2.0\times10^{-20}$ m$^2$ V$^{-1}$ and for the first time for monolayer MoS$_\mathrm{2}$, $|χ_s^{(3)}|=1.7\times10^{-28}$ m$^3$ V$^{-2}$. Experimental comparisons between MoS$_\mathrm{2}$ and graphene are also performed, demonstrating $\sim$3.4 times stronger third-order sheet nonlinearity in monolayer MoS$_\mathrm{2}$, highlighting the material's potential for nonlinear photonics in the telecommunications C band.

Coherent Charge Transport in Ballistic InSb Nanowire Josephson Junctions

Hybrid InSb nanowire-superconductor devices are promising for investigating Majorana modes and topological quantum computation in solid-state devices. An experimental realisation of ballistic, phase-coherent superconductor-nanowire hybrid devices is a necessary step towards engineering topological superconducting electronics. Here, we report on a low-temperature transport study of Josephson junction devices fabricated from InSb nanowires grown by molecular-beam epitaxy and provide a clear evidence for phase-coherent, ballistic charge transport through the nanowires in the junctions. We demonstrate that our devices show gate-tunable proximity-induced supercurrent and clear signatures of multiple Andreev reflections in the differential conductance, indicating phase-coherent transport within the junctions. We also observe periodic modulations of the critical current that can be associated with the Fabry-Pérot interference in the nanowires in the ballistic transport regime. Our work shows that the InSb nanowires grown by molecular-beam epitaxy are of excellent material quality and hybrid superconducting devices made from these nanowires are highly desirable for investigation of the novel physics in topological states of matter and for applications in topological quantum electronics.

Coherent Coupling of WS_2 Monolayers with Metallic Photonic Nanostructures at Room Temperature

Room temperature strong coupling of WS_2 monolayer exciton transitions to metallic Fabry-Perot and plasmonic optical cavities is demonstrated. A Rabi splitting of 101 meV is observed for the Fabry-Perot cavity, more than double those reported to date in other 2D materials. The enhanced magnitude and visibility of WS_2 monolayer strong coupling is attributed to the larger absorption coefficient, the narrower linewidth of the A exciton transition, and greater spin-orbit coupling. For WS_2 coupled to plasmonic arrays, the Rabi splitting still reaches 60 meV despite the less favorable coupling conditions, and displays interesting photoluminescence features. The unambiguous signature of WS_2 monolayer strong coupling in easily fabricated metallic resonators at room temperature suggests many possibilities for combining light-matter hybridization with spin and valleytronics.

Experimental access to Transition Distribution Amplitudes with the PANDA experiment at FAIR

Baryon-to-meson Transition Distribution Amplitudes (TDAs) encoding valuable new information on hadron structure appear as building blocks in the collinear factorized description for several types of hard exclusive reactions. In this paper, we address the possibility of accessing nucleon-to-pion ($πN$) TDAs from $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0$ reaction with the future PANDA detector at the FAIR facility. At high center of mass energy and high invariant mass squared of the lepton pair $q^2$, the amplitude of the signal channel $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0$ admits a QCD factorized description in terms of $πN$ TDAs and nucleon Distribution Amplitudes (DAs) in the forward and backward kinematic regimes. Assuming the validity of this factorized description, we perform feasibility studies for measuring $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0$ with the PANDA detector. Detailed simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as on rejection of the most severe background channel, i.e. $\bar{p}p \to π^+π^- π^0$ were performed for the center of mass energy squared $s = 5$ GeV$^2$ and $s = 10$ GeV$^2$, in the kinematic regions $3.0 < q^2 < 4.3$ GeV$^2$ and $5 < q^2 < 9$ GeV$^2$, respectively, with a neutral pion scattered in the forward or backward cone $| \cosθ_{π^0}| > 0.5 $ in the proton-antiproton center of mass frame. Results of the simulation show that the particle identification capabilities of the PANDA detector will allow to achieve a background rejection factor of $5\cdot 10^7$ ($1\cdot 10^7$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=5$ GeV$^2$, and of $1\cdot 10^8$ ($6\cdot 10^6$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=10$ GeV$^2$, while keeping the signal reconstruction efficiency at around $40\%$. At both energies, a clean lepton signal can be reconstructed with the expected statistics corresponding to $2$ fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. (.../...)

Feasibility studies of time-like proton electromagnetic form factors at PANDA at FAIR

Simulation results for future measurements of electromagnetic proton form factors at \PANDA (FAIR) within the PandaRoot software framework are reported. The statistical precision with which the proton form factors can be determined is estimated. The signal channel $\bar p p \to e^+ e^-$ is studied on the basis of two different but consistent procedures. The suppression of the main background channel, $\textit{i.e.}$ $\bar p p \to π^+ π^-$, is studied. Furthermore, the background versus signal efficiency, statistical and systematical uncertainties on the extracted proton form factors are evaluated using two different procedures. The results are consistent with those of a previous simulation study using an older, simplified framework. However, a slightly better precision is achieved in the PandaRoot study in a large range of momentum transfer, assuming the nominal beam conditions and detector performance.

Improved Search for a Light Sterile Neutrino with the Full Configuration of the Daya Bay Experiment

This Letter reports an improved search for light sterile neutrino mixing in the electron antineutrino disappearance channel with the full configuration of the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment. With an additional 404 days of data collected in eight antineutrino detectors, this search benefits from 3.6 times the statistics available to the previous publication, as well as from improvements in energy calibration and background reduction. A relative comparison of the rate and energy spectrum of reactor antineutrinos in the three experimental halls yields no evidence of sterile neutrino mixing in the $2\times10^{-4} \lesssim |Δm^{2}_{41}| \lesssim 0.3$ eV$^{2}$ mass range. The resulting limits on $\sin^{2}2θ_{14}$ are improved by approximately a factor of 2 over previous results and constitute the most stringent constraints to date in the $|Δm^{2}_{41}| \lesssim 0.2$ eV$^{2}$ region.

Limits on Active to Sterile Neutrino Oscillations from Disappearance Searches in the MINOS, Daya Bay, and Bugey-3 Experiments

Searches for a light sterile neutrino have been performed independently by the MINOS and the Daya Bay experiments using the muon (anti)neutrino and electron antineutrino disappearance channels, respectively. In this Letter, results from both experiments are combined with those from the Bugey-3 reactor neutrino experiment to constrain oscillations into light sterile neutrinos. The three experiments are sensitive to complementary regions of parameter space, enabling the combined analysis to probe regions allowed by the LSND and MiniBooNE experiments in a minimally extended four-neutrino flavor framework. Stringent limits on $\sin^2 2θ_{μe}$ are set over 6 orders of magnitude in the sterile mass-squared splitting $Δm^2_{41}$. The sterile-neutrino mixing phase space allowed by the LSND and MiniBooNE experiments is excluded for $Δm^2_{41} < 0.8$ eV$^2$ at 95% CL$_s$.

New measurement of $θ_{13}$ via neutron capture on hydrogen at Daya Bay

This article reports an improved independent measurement of neutrino mixing angle $θ_{13}$ at the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment. Electron antineutrinos were identified by inverse $β$-decays with the emitted neutron captured by hydrogen, yielding a data-set with principally distinct uncertainties from that with neutrons captured by gadolinium. With the final two of eight antineutrino detectors installed, this study used 621 days of data including the previously reported 217-day data set with six detectors. The dominant statistical uncertainty was reduced by 49%. Intensive studies of the cosmogenic muon-induced $^9$Li and fast neutron backgrounds and the neutron-capture energy selection efficiency, resulted in a reduction of the systematic uncertainty by 26%. The deficit in the detected number of antineutrinos at the far detectors relative to the expected number based on the near detectors yielded $\sin^22θ_{13} = 0.071 \pm 0.011$ in the three-neutrino-oscillation framework. The combination of this result with the gadolinium-capture result is also reported.

Study of the wave packet treatment of neutrino oscillation at Daya Bay

The disappearance of reactor $\barν_e$ observed by the Daya Bay experiment is examined in the framework of a model in which the neutrino is described by a wave packet with a relative intrinsic momentum dispersion $σ_\text{rel}$. Three pairs of nuclear reactors and eight antineutrino detectors, each with good energy resolution, distributed among three experimental halls, supply a high-statistics sample of $\barν_e$ acquired at nine different baselines. This provides a unique platform to test the effects which arise from the wave packet treatment of neutrino oscillation. The modified survival probability formula was used to fit Daya Bay data, providing the first experimental limits: $2.38 \cdot 10^{-17} < σ_{\rm rel} < 0.23$. Treating the dimensions of the reactor cores and detectors as constraints, the limits are improved: $10^{-14} \lesssim σ_{\rm rel} < 0.23$, and an upper limit of $σ_{\rm rel} <0.20$ is obtained. All limits correspond to a 95\% C.L. Furthermore, the effect due to the wave packet nature of neutrino oscillation is found to be insignificant for reactor antineutrinos detected by the Daya Bay experiment thus ensuring an unbiased measurement of the oscillation parameters $\sin^22θ_{13}$ and $Δm^2_{32}$ within the plane wave model.

Geospatial Big Data Handling Theory and Methods: A Review and Research Challenges

Big data has now become a strong focus of global interest that is increasingly attracting the attention of academia, industry, government and other organizations. Big data can be situated in the disciplinary area of traditional geospatial data handling theory and methods. The increasing volume and varying format of collected geospatial big data presents challenges in storing, managing, processing, analyzing, visualizing and verifying the quality of data. This has implications for the quality of decisions made with big data. Consequently, this position paper of the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) Technical Commission II (TC II) revisits the existing geospatial data handling methods and theories to determine if they are still capable of handling emerging geospatial big data. Further, the paper synthesises problems, major issues and challenges with current developments as well as recommending what needs to be developed further in the near future. JUNO Conceptual Design Report

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is proposed to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy using an underground liquid scintillator detector. It is located 53 km away from both Yangjiang and Taishan Nuclear Power Plants in Guangdong, China. The experimental hall, spanning more than 50 meters, is under a granite mountain of over 700 m overburden. Within six years of running, the detection of reactor antineutrinos can resolve the neutrino mass hierarchy at a confidence level of 3-4$σ$, and determine neutrino oscillation parameters $\sin^2θ_{12}$, $Δm^2_{21}$, and $|Δm^2_{ee}|$ to an accuracy of better than 1%. The JUNO detector can be also used to study terrestrial and extra-terrestrial neutrinos and new physics beyond the Standard Model. The central detector contains 20,000 tons liquid scintillator with an acrylic sphere of 35 m in diameter. $\sim$17,000 508-mm diameter PMTs with high quantum efficiency provide $\sim$75% optical coverage. The current choice of the liquid scintillator is: linear alkyl benzene (LAB) as the solvent, plus PPO as the scintillation fluor and a wavelength-shifter (Bis-MSB). The number of detected photoelectrons per MeV is larger than 1,100 and the energy resolution is expected to be 3% at 1 MeV. The calibration system is designed to deploy multiple sources to cover the entire energy range of reactor antineutrinos, and to achieve a full-volume position coverage inside the detector. The veto system is used for muon detection, muon induced background study and reduction. It consists of a Water Cherenkov detector and a Top Tracker system. The readout system, the detector control system and the offline system insure efficient and stable data acquisition and processing.

A new variable for SRS plan quality evaluation based on normal tissue sparing: The Effect of Prescription Isodose Levels

Objectives: A new dosimetric variable, dose dropping speed (DDS), was proposed and used to evaluate normal tissue sparing among stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) plans with different prescription isodose lines. Methods: Forty plans were generated for 8 intracranial SRS cases, prescribing to isodose levels (IDLs) ranging from 50% to 90% in 10% increments. Whilst maintaining similar coverage and conformity, plans at different IDLs were evaluated in terms of normal tissue sparing using the proposed DDS. The DDS was defined as the greater decay coefficient in a double exponential decay fit of the dose drop-off outside the PTV, which models the steep portion of the drop-off. Provided that the prescription dose covers the whole PTV, a greater DDS indicates better normal tissue sparing. Results: Among all plans, the DDS was found the lowest for the prescription at 90% IDL and the highest for the prescription at 60% or 70%. Beam profile slope change in penumbra and its field size dependence were explored and given as the physical basis of the findings. Conclusions: A variable was proposed for SRS plan quality evaluation. Using this measure, prescriptions at 60% and 70% IDLs were found to provide best normal tissue sparing. Advances in knowledge: A new variable was proposed based on which normal tissue sparing was quantitatively evaluated, comparing different prescription IDLs in SRS.

Partial spin reversal in magnetic deflagration

The reversal of spins in a magnetic material as they relax toward equilibrium is accompanied by the release of Zeeman energy which can lead to accelerated spin relaxation and the formation of a well-defined self-sustained propagating spin-reversal front known as magnetic deflagration. To date, studies of Mn$_{12}$-acetate single crystals have focused mainly on deflagration in large longitudinal magnetic fields and found a fully spin-reversed final state. We report a systematic study of the effect of transverse magnetic field on magnetic deflagration and demonstrate that in small longitudinal fields the final state consists of only partially reversed spins. Further, we measured the front speed as a function of applied magnetic field. The theory of magnetic deflagration, together with a modification that takes into account the partial spin reversal, fits the transverse field dependence of the front speed but not its dependence on longitudinal field. The most significant result of this study is the finding of a partially spin-reversed final state, which is evidence that the spins at the deflagration front are also only partially reversed.

Joint Iterative Power Adjustment and Interference Suppression Algorithms for Cooperative DS-CDMA Networks

This work presents joint iterative power allocation and interference suppression algorithms for DS-CDMA networks which employ multiple relays and the amplify and forward cooperation strategy. We propose a joint constrained optimization framework that considers the allocation of power levels across the relays subject to individual and global power constraints and the design of linear receivers for interference suppression. We derive constrained minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) expressions for the parameter vectors that determine the optimal power levels across the relays and the parameters of the linear receivers. In order to solve the proposed optimization problems efficiently, we develop recursive least squares (RLS) algorithms for adaptive joint iterative power allocation, and receiver and channel parameter estimation. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms obtain significant gains in performance and capacity over existing schemes.

Observation of in-gap surface states in the Kondo insulator SmB6 by photoemission

Kondo insulators (KIs) are strongly correlated materials in which the interactions between 4f and conduction electrons lead to a hybridization gap opening at low temperature 1-2. SmB6 is a typical KI, but its resistivity does not diverge at low temperatures, which was attributed to some in-gap states 3-10. However after several decades of research, the nature and origin of the in-gap states remain unclear. Recent band calculation and transport measurements suggest that the in-gap states could actually be ascribed to topological surface states. SmB6 thus might be the first realization of topological Kondo insulator (TKI) 13, the strongly correlated version of topological insulator (TI) 11,12. Here by performing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we directly observed several dispersive states within the hybridization gap of SmB6, which cross the Fermi level and show negligible kz dependence, indicative of their surface origin. Furthermore, the circular dichroism (CD) ARPES results of the in-gap states suggest the chirality of orbital momentum, and temperature dependent measurements have shown that the in-gap states vanish simultaneously with the hybridization gap around 150 K. These strongly suggest their possible topological origin.

Onset of a Propagating Self-Sustained Spin Reversal Front in a Magnetic System

The energy released in a magnetic material by reversing spins as they relax toward equilibrium can lead to a dynamical instability that ignites self-sustained rapid relaxation along a deflagration front that propagates at a constant subsonic speed. Using a trigger heat pulse and transverse and longitudinal magnetic fields, we investigate and control the crossover between thermally driven magnetic relaxation and magnetic deflagration in single crystals of Mn$_{12}$-acetate.

Studies of Vector Boson Scattering And Triboson Production with DELPHES Parametrized Fast Simulation for Snowmass 2013

Multiboson production provides a unique way to probe Electroweak Symmetry Breaking (EWSB) and physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). With the discovery of the Higgs boson, the default model is that EWSB occurs according to the Higgs mechanism. Deviations from the SM in Higgs and gauge boson properties due to new physics at a higher energy scale can be parameterized by higher-dimension operators in an Effective Field Theory (EFT). We present sensitivity studies for dimension-6 and dimension-8 operators in an EFT by looking for anomalous vector boson scattering and triboson production, at proton-proton colliders with center-of-mass energies of 14 TeV, 33 TeV and 100 TeV, respectively.

Study of Electroweak Interactions at the Energy Frontier

With the discovery of the Higgs boson, the spectrum of particles in the Standard Model (SM) is complete. It is more important than ever to perform precision measurements and to test for deviations from SM predictions in the electroweak sector. In this report, we investigate two themes in the arena of precision electroweak measurements: the electroweak precision observables (EWPOs) that test the particle content and couplings in the SM and the minimal supersymmetric SM, and the measurements involving multiple gauge bosons in the final state which provide unique probes of the basic tenets of electroweak symmetry breaking. Among the important EWPOs we focus our discussion on M_W and sin^2 theta_eff^l, and on anomalous quartic gauge couplings probed by triboson production and vector boson scattering. We investigate the thresholds of precision that need to be achieved in order to be sensitive to new physics. We study the precision that can be achieved at various facilities on these observables. We discuss the calculational tools needed to predict SM rates and distributions in order to perform these measurements at the required precision. This report summarizes the work of the Energy Frontier Precision Study of Electroweak Interactions working group of the 2013 Community Summer Study (Snowmass).

{110} Plane Orientation Driven Superior Li-ion Battery Performance and Room Temperature Ferromagnetism in Co3O4 Nanostructures

This paper presents synthesis methods and multifunctional properties of porous Co3O4 nanoplatelets and nanowires. Surprisingly, significantly superior Li-ion battery performance compared to other cathode materials is exhibited in the same samples as room temperature ferromagnetism (RTFM). Microstructure observations, and properties measurements and analysis indicate that the as-prepared Co3O4 nanostructures exhibit a spontaneous transformation of their morphology, showing a predominantly {110} plane orientation and preferentially presenting the Co3+ species at the surface at appreciate preparation condition. More Co3+ in an octahedral (O) position exposed on the surface is associated with more Co3+ being Co3+|\cdot (Co3+ with trapped charge carriers) or reduced to Co2+ in the O position due to surface defects or oxygen vacancies, which is possibly the mechanism of excellent electric transport properties then high Li-battery performance; at the same time, reduced to Co2+ or free charge carriers trapped by Co3+|\cdot in the O position are the role of charge carries- mediate ferromagnetism, may be the origin of RTFM as well. These results further show the importance of modifying the nanostructure of surfaces in the preparation of transition metal oxides as multidisciplinary functional materials.

Unusual magnetic phenomena (abnormal magnetization verse temperature (M - T) behaviour, large and abnormal magnetization hysteresis loop horizontal shift (HHS) verse cooling field (HFC) behaviours (HHS - HFC) has been observed in these square nanotubes. These suggest the observation of large unfrozen orbital moment which also is the micro -original of observed large and abnormal horizontal shift (HHS). Critical Behavior of a Strongly Interacting 2D Electron System

With decreasing density $n_s$ the thermopower $S$ of a low-disorder 2D electron system in silicon is found to exhibit a sharp increase by more than an order of magnitude, tending to a divergence at a finite, disorder-independent density $n_t$ consistent with the critical form $(-T/S) \propto (n_s-n_t)^x$ with $x=1.0\pm 0.1$ ($T$ is the temperature). Precise measurement of the absolute fluorescence yield of the 337 nm band in atmospheric gases

A measurement of the absolute fluorescence yield of the 337 nm nitrogen band, relevant to ultra-high energy cosmic ray (UHECR) detectors, is reported. Two independent calibrations of the fluorescence emission induced by a 120 GeV proton beam were employed: Cherenkov light from the beam particle and calibrated light from a nitrogen laser. The fluorescence yield in air at a pressure of 1013 hPa and temperature of 293 K was found to be $Y_{337} = 5.61\pm 0.06_{stat} \pm 0.21_{syst}$ photons/MeV. Bonding mechanism in the nitrides Ti2AlN and TiN: an experimental and theoretical investigation

The electronic structure of nanolaminate Ti2AlN and TiN thin films has been investigated by bulk-sensitive soft x-ray emission spectroscopy. The measured Ti L, N K, Al L1 and Al L2,3 emission spectra are compared with calculated spectra using ab initio density-functional theory including dipole transition matrix elements. Three different types of bond regions are identified; a relatively weak Ti 3d - Al 3p bonding between -1 and -2 eV below the Fermi level, and Ti 3d - N 2p and Ti 3d - N 2s bonding which are deeper in energy observed at -4.8 eV and -15 eV below the Fermi level, respectively. A strongly modified spectral shape of 3s states of Al L2,3 emission from Ti2AlN in comparison to pure Al metal is found, which reflects the Ti 3d - Al 3p hybridization observed in the Al L1 emission. Diversity of multiwavelength emission bumps in the GRB 100219A afterglow

Context. Multi-wavelength observations of gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows provide important information about the activity of their central engines and their environments. In particular, the short timescale variability, such as bumps and/or rebrightening features visible in the multi-wavelength light curves, is still poorly understood. Aims. We analyze the multi-wavelength observations of the GRB100219A afterglow at redshift 4.7. In particular, we attempt to identify the physical origin of the late achromatic flares/bumps detected in the X-ray and optical bands. Methods. We present ground-based optical photometric data and Swift X-ray observations on GRB100219A. We analyzed the temporal behavior of the X-ray and optical light curves, as well as the X-ray spectra. Results. The early flares in the X-ray and optical light curves peak simultaneously at about 1000 s after the burst trigger, while late achromatic bumps in the X-ray and optical bands appear at about 20000 s after the burst trigger. These are uncommon features in the afterglow phenomenology. Considering the temporal and spectral properties, we argue that both optical and X-ray emissions come from the same mechanism. The late flares/bumps may be produced by late internal shocks from long-lasting activity of the central engine. An off-axis origin for a structured jet model is also discussed to interpret the bump shapes. The early optical bump can be interpreted as the afterglow onset, while the early X-ray flare could be caused by the internal activity. GRB 100219A exploded in a dense environment as revealed by the strong attenuation of X-ray emission and the optical-to-X-ray spectral energy distribution.

The detailed investigation of the electronic structure and chemical bonding provides increased understanding of the physical properties of this type of nanolaminates. Three different types of bond regions are identified; the relatively weak Ti 3d - Al 3p hybridization 1 eV below the Fermi level, and the Ti 3d - C 2p and Ti 3d - C 2s hybridizations which are stronger and deeper in energy are observed around 2.5 eV and 10 eV below the Fermi level, respectively. A strongly modified spectral shape of the 3s final states in comparison to pure Al is detected for the buried Al monolayers indirectly reflecting the Ti 3d - Al 3p hybridization. The electronic structure in the new transition metal carbide Ti4SiC3 has been investigated by bulk-sensitive soft x-ray emission spectroscopy and compared to the well-studied Ti3SiC2 and TiC systems. The measured high-resolution Ti L, C K and Si L x-ray emission spectra are discussed with ab initio calculations based on density-functional theory including core-to-valence dipole matrix elements. The detailed investigations of the Ti-C and Ti-Si chemical bonds provide increased understanding of the physical properties of these nanolaminates. A strongly modified spectral shape is detected for the buried Si monolayers due to Si 3p hybridization with the Ti 3d orbitals. As a result of relaxation of the crystal structure and the charge-transfer from Ti (and Si) to C, the strength of the Ti-C covalent bond is increased. The differences between the electronic and crystal structures of Ti4SiC3 and Ti3SiC2 are discussed in relation to the number of Si layers per Ti layer in the two systems and the corresponding change of materials properties.

The electronic structures of epitaxially grown films of Ti3AlC2, Ti3SiC2 and Ti3GeC2 have been investigated by bulk-sensitive soft X-ray emission spectroscopy. The measured high-resolution Ti L, C K, Al L, Si L and Ge M emission spectra are compared with ab initio density-functional theory including core-to-valence dipole matrix elements. A qualitative agreement between experiment and theory is obtained. A weak covalent Ti-Al bond is manifested by a pronounced shoulder in the Ti L-emission of Ti3AlC2. As Al is replaced with Si or Ge, the shoulder disappears. For the buried Al and Si-layers, strongly hybridized spectral shapes are detected in Ti3AlC2 and Ti3SiC2, respectively. As a result of relaxation of the crystal structure and the increased charge-transfer from Ti to C, the Ti-C bonding is strengthened. The differences between the electronic structures are discussed in relation to the bonding in the nanolaminates and the corresponding change of materials properties.

We measure the branching fraction for the decay B0bar --> Lambda_c^+ anti-Lambda K- to be (3.8 \pm 0.8_{stat} \pm 0.2_{sys} \pm 1.0_{Lambda_c^+})x10^{-5}. The uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to the uncertainty in the Lambda_c^+ branching fraction. We find that the Lambda_c^+ K^- invariant mass distribution shows an enhancement above 3.5 GeV/c^2.

Search for hadronic decays of a light Higgs boson in the radiative decay Upsilon --> gamma A0

We search for hadronic decays of a light Higgs boson (A0) produced in radiative decays of an Upsilon(2S) or Upsilon(3S) meson, Upsilon --> gamma A0. The data have been recorded by the BABAR experiment at the Upsilon(3S) and Upsilon(2S) center of mass energies, and include (121.3 \pm 1.2) x 10^6 Upsilon(3S) and (98.3 \pm 0.9) x 10^6 Upsilon(2S) mesons. No significant signal is observed. We set 90% confidence level upper limits on the product branching fractions B(Upsilon(nS)-->gamma A0) x B(A0-->hadrons) (n=2 or 3) that range from 1 x 10^{-6} for an A0 mass of 0.3 GeV/c^2 to 8 x 10^{-5} at 7 GeV/c^2.

Study of radiative bottomonium transitions using converted photons

We use 111+/-1 million Upsilon(3S) and 89+/-1 million Upsilon(2S) events recorded by the BaBar detector at the PEP-II B-factory at SLAC to perform a study of radiative transitions between bottomonium states using photons that have been converted to e+e- pairs by the detector material. We observe Upsilon(3S) -> gamma chi_b0,2(1P) decay, make precise measurements of the branching fractions for chi_b1,2(1P,2P) -> gamma Upsilon(1S) and chi_b1,2(2P) -> gamma Upsilon(2S) decays, and search for radiative decay to the eta_b(1S) and eta_b(2S) states.

The electric field as a novel switch for uptake/release of hydrogen storage in nitrogen doped graphene

Nitrogen-doped graphene was recently synthesized and was reported to be a catalyst for hydrogen dissociative adsorption under a perpendicular applied electric field (F). In this work, the diffusion of H atoms on N-doped graphene, in the presence and absence of an applied perpendicular electric field, is studied using density functional theory. We demonstrate that the applied field can significantly facilitate the binding of hydrogen molecules on N-doped graphene through dissociative adsorption and diffusion on the surface. By removing the applied field the absorbed H atoms can be released efficiently. Our theoretical calculation indicates that N-doped graphene is a promising hydrogen storage material with reversible hydrogen adsorption/desorption where the applied electric field can act as a switch for the uptake/release processes.

Very large optical rotation generated by Rb vapor in a multi-pass cell

Paramagnetic Faraday rotation is a powerful technique for atom sensing widely used in quantum non-demolition measurements, fundamental symmetry tests, and other precision measurements. We demonstrate the use of a multi-pass optical cell for Faraday rotation spectroscopy and observe polarization rotation in excess of 100 radians from spin-polarized Rb vapor. Unlike optical cavities, multi-pass cells have a deterministic number of light passes and can be used to measure large optical rotations. We also observe a 10-fold suppression of transverse spin relaxation when Rb atoms are placed in a coherent superposition state immune to spin-exchange collisions.

Enhanced stability of hydrogen atoms at the graphene/graphane interface of nanoribbons

The thermal stability of graphene/graphane nanoribbons (GGNRs) is investigated using density functional theory. It is found that the energy barriers for the diffusion of hydrogen atoms on the zigzag and armchair interfaces of GGNRs are 2.86 and 3.17 eV, respectively, while the diffusion barrier of an isolated H atom on pristine graphene was only ~0.3 eV. These results unambiguously demonstrate that the thermal stability of GGNRs can be enhanced significantly by increasing the hydrogen diffusion barriers through graphene/graphane interface engineering. This may provide new insights for viable applications of GGNRs.

Interruption of Tidal Disruption Flares By Supermassive Black Hole Binaries

Supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs) are products of galaxy mergers, and are important in testing Lambda cold dark matter cosmology and locating gravitational-wave-radiation sources. A unique electromagnetic signature of SMBHBs in galactic nuclei is essential in identifying the binaries in observations from the IR band through optical to X-ray. Recently, the flares in optical, UV, and X-ray caused by supermassive black holes (SMBHs) tidally disrupting nearby stars have been successfully used to observationally probe single SMBHs in normal galaxies. In this Letter, we investigate the accretion of the gaseous debris of a tidally disrupted star by a SMBHB. Using both stability analysis of three-body systems and numerical scattering experiments, we show that the accretion of stellar debris gas, which initially decays with time $\propto t^{-5/3}$, would stop at a time $T_{\rm tr} \simeq ηT_{\rm b}$. Here, $η\sim0.25$ and $T_{\rm b}$ is the orbital period of the SMBHB. After a period of interruption, the accretion recurs discretely at time $T_{\rm r} \simeq ξT_b$, where $ξ\sim 1$. Both $η$ and $ξ$ sensitively depend on the orbital parameters of the tidally disrupted star at the tidal radius and the orbit eccentricity of SMBHB. The interrupted accretion of the stellar debris gas gives rise to an interrupted tidal flare, which could be used to identify SMBHBs in non-active galaxies in the upcoming transient surveys.

2+1 flavor domain wall QCD on a (2 fm)^3 lattice: light meson spectroscopy with Ls = 16

We present results for light meson masses and pseudoscalar decay constants from the first of a series of lattice calculations with 2+1 dynamical flavors of domain wall fermions and the Iwasaki gauge action. The work reported here was done at a fixed lattice spacing of about 0.12 fm on a 16^3\times32 lattice, which amounts to a spatial volume of (2 fm)^3 in physical units. The number of sites in the fifth dimension is 16, which gives m_{res} = 0.00308(4) in these simulations. Three values of input light sea quark masses, m_l^{sea} \approx 0.85 m_s, 0.59 m_s and 0.33 m_s were used to allow for extrapolations to the physical light quark limit, whilst the heavier sea quark mass was fixed to approximately the physical strange quark mass m_s. The exact rational hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm was used to evaluate the fractional powers of the fermion determinants in the ensemble generation. We have found that f_π= 127(4) MeV, f_K = 157(5) MeV and f_K/f_π= 1.24(2), where the errors are statistical only, which are in good agreement with the experimental values.
