Halide Adsorption on Single-crystal Silver Substrates: Dynamic Simulations and ab-initio Density-functional Theory

We investigate the static and dynamic behaviors of a Br adlayer electrochemically deposited onto single-crystal Ag(100) using an off-lattice model of the adlayer. Unlike previous studies using a lattice-gas model, the off-lattice model allows adparticles to be located at any position within a two-dimensional approximation to the substrate. Interactions with the substrate are approximated by a corrugation potential. Using Density Functional Theory (DFT) to calculate surface binding energies, a sinusoidal approximation to the corrugation potential is constructed. A variety of techniques, including Monte Carlo and Langevin simulations, are used to study the behavior of the adlayer. The lateral root-mean-square (rms) deviation of the adparticles from the binding sites is presented along with equilibrium coverage isotherms, and the thermally activated Arrhenius barrier-hopping model used in previous dynamic Monte Carlo simulations is tested.

Measurement of the hydrodynamic forces between two polymer-coated spheres

The hydrodynamic forces between Brownian spheres are determined from a measurement of the correlated thermal fluctuations in particle position using a new method, two-particle cross-correlation spectroscopy (TCS). A pair of 1.3 um diameter polymer-coated poly(methyl methacrylate) were held at separations of between 2 um and 20 um using optical traps. The mobility tensor is determined directly from the statistically-averaged Brownian fluctuations of the two spheres. The observed distance dependence of the mobility tensor is in quantitative agreement with low-Reynolds number calculations.

Application of the Projected Dynamics Method to an Anisotropic Heisenberg Model

The Projected Dynamics method was originally developed to study metastable decay in ferromagnetic discrete spin models. Here, we apply it to a classical, continuous Heisenberg model with anisotropic ferromagnetic interactions, which evolves under a Monte Carlo dynamic. The anisotropy is sufficiently large to allow comparison with the Ising model. We describe the Projected Dynamics method and how to apply it to this continuous-spin system. We also discuss how to extract metastable lifetimes and how to extrapolate from small systems to larger systems.
