Kinematic dependence of azimuthal anisotropies in pp++Au, dd++Au, 3^3He+Au at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}} = 200 GeV

There is strong evidence for the formation of small droplets of quark-gluon plasma in p/d/3p/d/^{3}He+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and in pp+pp/Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. In particular, the analysis of data at RHIC for different geometries obtained by varying the projectile size and shape has proven insightful. In the present analysis, we find excellent agreement with the previously published PHENIX at RHIC results on elliptical and triangular flow with an independent analysis via the two-particle correlation method, which has quite different systematic uncertainties and an independent code base. In addition, the results are extended to other detector combinations with different kinematic (pseudorapidity) coverage. These results provide additional constraints on contributions from nonflow and longitudinal decorrelations.

Transverse momentum dependent forward neutron single spin asymmetries in transversely polarized pp++pp collisions at s=200\sqrt{s}=200 GeV

In 2015, the PHENIX collaboration has measured very forward (η>6.8η>6.8) single-spin asymmetries of inclusive neutrons in transversely polarized proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions at a center of mass energy of 200 GeV. A previous publication from this data set concentrated on the nuclear dependence of such asymmetries. In this measurement the explicit transverse-momentum dependence of inclusive neutron single spin asymmetries for proton-proton collisions is extracted using a bootstrapping-unfolding technique on the transverse momenta. This explicit transverse-momentum dependence will help improve the understanding of the mechanisms that create these asymmetries.

J/ψJ/ψ and ψ(2S)ψ(2S) production at forward rapidity in pp+pp collisions at s=510\sqrt{s}=510 GeV

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has measured the differential cross section, mean transverse momentum, mean transverse momentum squared of inclusive J/ψJ/ψ and cross-section ratio of ψ(2S)ψ(2S) to J/ψJ/ψ at forward rapidity in \pp collisions at \sqrts = 510 GeV via the dimuon decay channel. Comparison is made to inclusive J/ψJ/ψ cross sections measured at \sqrts = 200 GeV and 2.76--13 TeV. The result is also compared to leading-order nonrelativistic QCD calculations coupled to a color-glass-condensate description of the low-xx gluons in the proton at low transverse momentum (pTp_T) and to next-to-leading order nonrelativistic QCD calculations for the rest of the pTp_T range. These calculations overestimate the data at low pTp_T. While consistent with the data within uncertainties above ≈3\approx3 GeV/cc, the calculations are systematically below the data. The total cross section times the branching ratio is BR $dσ^{J/ψ}_{pp}/dy (1.2<|y|<2.2, 0<p_T<10~\mbox{GeV/$c$}) =$ 54.3 ±\pm 0.5 (stat) ±\pm 5.5 (syst) nb.

Measurement of J/ψJ/ψ at forward and backward rapidity in pp+pp, pp+A+Al, pp+A+Au, and 3^3He+Au collisions at sNN=200 GeV\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200~{\rm GeV}

Charmonium is a valuable probe in heavy-ion collisions to study the properties of the quark gluon plasma, and is also an interesting probe in small collision systems to study cold nuclear matter effects, which are also present in large collision systems. With the recent observations of collective behavior of produced particles in small system collisions, measurements of the modification of charmonium in small systems have become increasingly relevant. We present the results of J/ψJ/ψ measurements at forward and backward rapidity in various small collision systems, pp++pp, pp++Al, pp++Au and 3^3He++Au, at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV. The results are presented in the form of the observable RABR_{AB}, the nuclear modification factor, a measure of the ratio of the J/ψJ/ψ invariant yield compared to the scaled yield in pp++pp collisions. We examine the rapidity, transverse momentum, and collision centrality dependence of nuclear effects on J/ψJ/ψ production with different projectile sizes pp and 3^3He, and different target sizes Al and Au. The modification is found to be strongly dependent on the target size, but to be very similar for pp++Au and 3^{3}He++Au. However, for 0%--20% central collisions at backward rapidity, the modification for 3^{3}He++Au is found to be smaller than that for pp++Au, with a mean fit to the ratio of 0.89±0.030.89\pm0.03(stat)±0.08{\pm}0.08(syst), possibly indicating final state effects due to the larger projectile size.

Measurement of charged pion double spin asymmetries at midrapidity in longitudinally polarized pp++pp collisions at s=510\sqrt{s}=510 GeV

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has measured the longitudinal double spin asymmetries, ALLA_{LL}, for charged pions at midrapidity (∣η∣<0.35|η|<0.35) in longitudinally polarized pp++pp collisions at s=510\sqrt{s}=510 GeV. These measurements are sensitive to the gluon spin contribution to the total spin of the proton in the parton momentum fraction xx range between 0.04 and 0.09. One can infer the sign of the gluon polarization from the ordering of pion asymmetries with charge alone. The asymmetries are found to be consistent with global quantum-chromodynamics fits of deep-inelastic scattering and data at s=200\sqrt{s}=200 GeV, which show a nonzero positive contribution of gluon spin to the proton spin.

Nuclear-modification factor of charged hadrons at forward and backward rapidity in pp++Al and pp++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV

The PHENIX experiment has studied nuclear effects in pp++Al and pp++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV on charged hadron production at forward rapidity (1.4<η<2.41.4<η<2.4, pp-going direction) and backward rapidity (−2.2<η<−1.2-2.2<η<-1.2, AA-going direction). Such effects are quantified by measuring nuclear modification factors as a function of transverse momentum and pseudorapidity in various collision multiplicity selections. In central pp++Al and pp++Au collisions, a suppression (enhancement) is observed at forward (backward) rapidity compared to the binary scaled yields in pp+pp collisions. The magnitude of enhancement at backward rapidity is larger in pp++Au collisions than in pp++Al collisions, which have a smaller number of participating nucleons. However, the results at forward rapidity show a similar suppression within uncertainties. The results in the integrated centrality are compared with calculations using nuclear parton distribution functions, which show a reasonable agreement at the forward rapidity but fail to describe the backward rapidity enhancement.

Production of π0π^0 and ηη mesons in U++U collisions at sNN=192\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=192 GeV

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider measured π0π^0 and ηη mesons at midrapidity in U++U collisions at sNN=192\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=192 GeV in a wide transverse momentum range. Measurements were performed in the π0(η)→γγπ^0(η)\rightarrowγγ decay modes. A strong suppression of π0π^0 and ηη meson production at high transverse momentum was observed in central U++U collisions relative to binary scaled pp++pp results. Yields of π0π^0 and ηη mesons measured in U++U collisions show similar suppression pattern to the ones measured in Au++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV for similar numbers of participant nucleons. The ηη/π0π^0 ratios do not show dependence on centrality or transverse momentum, and are consistent with previously measured values in hadron-hadron, hadron-nucleus, nucleus-nucleus, and e+e−e^+e^- collisions.
