Physics of leptoquarks in precision experiments and at particle colliders

We present a comprehensive review of physics effects generated by leptoquarks (LQs), i.e., hypothetical particles that can turn quarks into leptons and vice versa, of either scalar or vector nature. These considerations include discussion of possible completions of the Standard Model that contain LQ fields. The main focus of the review is on those LQ scenarios that are not problematic with regard to proton stability. We accordingly concentrate on the phenomenology of light leptoquarks that is relevant for precision experiments and particle colliders. Important constraints on LQ interactions with matter are derived from precision low-energy observables such as electric dipole moments, (g-2) of charged leptons, atomic parity violation, neutral meson mixing, Kaon, B, and D meson decays, etc. We provide a general analysis of indirect constraints on the strength of LQ interactions with the quarks and leptons to make statements that are as model independent as possible. We address complementary constraints that originate from electroweak precision measurements, top, and Higgs physics. The Higgs physics analysis we present covers not only the most recent but also expected results from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We finally discuss direct LQ searches. Current experimental situation is summarized and self-consistency of assumptions that go into existing accelerator-based searches is discussed. A progress in making next-to-leading order predictions for both pair and single LQ productions at colliders is also outlined.

QCD effects and search for new physics in t -->b W

The most general set of new physics effective operators contributing to the decay of an unpolarized top quark into a bottom quark and a W gauge boson are considered at next-to-leading order in QCD. We find that the dipole operator contribution to the transverse-plus W helicity fraction F+ is enhanced compared to the leading order result at non-vanishing bottom quark mass. Nonetheless, presently the observable most sensitive to new physics contributions is the longitudinal W helicity fraction FL. We also investigate constraints on t W b couplings coming from precision flavor observables, in particular from Delta B=1 and Delta B=2 transitions of Bq mesons. We find these to be mostly superior to present direct constraints coming from top decay and single top production measurements at the LHC and Tevatron.

Theory overview of charm physics

Recent developments in charm physics within the standard model and beyond are reviewed. The precision study of leptonic charm meson decays accompanied with the constraints coming from K, B and tau physics enables to determine constraints on models of new physics. The standard model contributions in the D0 - D0bar system are still under investigation including operators of higher dimensions. New physics models such as the Littlest Higgs model or warped extra-dimensional models might modify the amount of CP violation, although CP violating asymmetries are still predicted to be at most of the order 1%. The forward-backward asymmetry in the top anti-top pair production at the Tevatron is opening a new window in the study of new physics in the charm sector. A few of the models considered to explain the observed asymmetry might modify flavor changing neutral current mediated charm processes. New physics searches in rare charm decays are discussed. It is pointed out that in most models new physics effects in rare charm decays are insignificant.

B, D and K decays

With the advent of the LHC, we will be able to probe New Physics (NP) up to energy scales almost one order of magnitude larger than it has been possible with present accelerator facilities. While direct detection of new particles will be the main avenue to establish the presence of NP at the LHC, indirect searches will provide precious complementary information, since most probably it will not be possible to measure the full spectrum of new particles and their couplings through direct production. In particular, precision measurements and computations in the realm of flavour physics are expected to play a key role in constraining the unknown parameters of the Lagrangian of any NP model emerging from direct searches at the LHC. The aim of Working Group 2 was twofold: on one hand, to provide a coherent, up-to-date picture of the status of flavour physics before the start of the LHC; on the other hand, to initiate activities on the path towards integrating information on NP from high-pT and flavour data.

Non-factorizable contributions to $\bar{B^0_d} \to D_s^{(*)} \bar{D_s^{(*)}}$ from chiral loops and tree level $1/N_c$ terms

We point out that the amplitudes for the decays $\bar{B}^0 \to D_s^+ D_s^-$ and $\bar{B}^0_s \to D^+ D^-$ have no factorizable contributions. If one or two of the $D$-mesons in the final state are vectors (i.e $D^*$ 's) there are relatively small factorizable contributions through the annihilation mechanism. The dominant contributions to the decay amplitudes arise from chiral loop contributions and $1/N_c$ suppressed tree level. We predict that the branching ratios for the processes $\bar B^0_d \to D_s^+ D_s^-$, $\bar B^0_d \to D_s^{+*} D_s^- $ and $\bar B^0_d \to D_s^+ D_s^{-*}$ are all of order $(2- 3) \times 10^{-4}$, while $\bar B^0_s \to D_d^+ D_d^-$, $\bar B^0_s \to D_d^{+*} D_d^- $ and $\bar B^0_s \to D_d^+ D_d^{-*}$ are of order $(4- 7) \times 10^{-3}$. If {\em both} $D$-mesons in the final state are $D^*$'s, we obtain branching ratios of order two times bigger.

CP violating phase $γ$ and the partial widths asymmetry in $B^- \to π^+ π^- K^-$ and $B^- \to K^+ K^- K^-$ decays

Motivated by recent Belle measurement of the branching ratios $B^- \to π^+ π^- K^-$ and $B^- \to K^+ K^- K^-$ and $B^\pm \to χ_{c0} K^\pm$, we investigate the CP violating asymmetry in the partial widths for the decays $B^- \to π^+ π^- K^-$ and $B^- \to K^+ K^- K^-$, which results from the interference of the nonresonant decay amplitude with the resonant amplitude $B^\pm \to χ_{c0} K^\pm $ $ \toπ^+ π^- K^\pm $ and $B^\pm \to χ_{c0} K^\pm$ $ \to K^+ K^- K^-$. By taking $γ\simeq 58^o$ we predict that the partial widths asymmetry is reaching 10% for the $B^- \to π^+ π^- K^-$ decay and 16% for the $B^- \to K^+ K^- K^-$decay.

The Radiative Leptonic Decays D^0 -> e^+ e^- gamma, mu^+ mu^- gamma in the Standard Model and Beyond

We present a calculation of the rare decay modes D^0 -> e^+ e^- gamma and D^0 -> mu^+ mu^- gamma in the framework of Standard Model. For the short distance part, we have derived QCD corrections to the Wilson coefficients involved, including C_9. The latter is found to be strongly suppressed by the corrections, leading to diminished values for the c -> u l^+l^- branching ratios in the 10^(-10) range. Within SM the exclusive decays are dominated by long distance effects. Nonresonant contributions are estimated using heavy quark and chiral symmetries to be at the level of 10%, compared to the contributions arising from D^0-> V gamma->l^+ l^- gamma, with V=rho, omega, phi. The total SM branching ratio is predicted to be in the range (1-3) x 10^(-9). We also consider contributions coming from MSSM with and without R parity conservation. Effects from MSSM are significant only for the R-parity violating case. Such contributions enhance the branching ratio D^0-> mu^+ mu^- gamma to 0.5 x 10^(-7), based on appropriately allowed values for C_9 and C_{10}. This selects D^0->mu^+ mu^- gamma as a possible probe of new physics.

Search for new physics in $ΔS = 2$ two - body (VV, PP, VP) decays of the B^- - meson

The $ΔS = 2$ $b \to \bar d ss$ transition proceeds via the box - diagram in the Standard Model with a branching ratio calculated to be below $10^{-11}$, thus providing an appropriate testing ground for physics beyond the Standard Model. We analyze the $ΔS = 2$ two - body $B^- \to K^{*-} \bar K^{*0}$, $B^- \to K^- \bar K^{0}$, $B^- \to K^{*-} \bar K^{0}$ and $B^- \to K^{-} \bar K^{*0}$ exclusive decays which are driven by the $b \to \bar d ss$ transition, both in the Standard Model and in several extensions of it. The models considered are the minimal supersymmetric model with and without ${\cal R}$ parity conservation and two Higgs doublet models. All four modes are found to have a branching ratio of the order of $10^{-13}$ in the Standard Model, while the expected branching ratio in the different extensions vary between $10^{-9} - 10^{-6}$.

FCNC transitions $c\to uγ$ and $s\to dγ$ in $B_c\to B_u^*γ$ and $B_s\to B_d^*γ$ decays

We propose the $B_c\to B_u^*γ$ decay as the most suitable probe for the flavour changing neutral transition $c\to uγ$. We estimate the short and long distance contributions to this decay within the standard model and we find them to be comparable; this is in contrast to radiative decays of $D$ mesons, that are completely dominated by the long distance contributions. Since the $c\to uγ$ transition is very sensitive to the physics beyond the standard model, the standard model prediction $Br(B_c\to B_u^*γ)\sim 10^{-8}$ obtained here opens a new window for future experiments. The detection of $B_c\to B_u^*γ$ decay at branching ratio well above $10^{-8}$ would signal new physics. In addition we study the $s\to dγ$ transition in $B_s\to B_d^*γ$ decay and we find it to be dominated by the long distance contribution. We use the Isgur-Scora-Grinstein-Wise (ISGW) constituent quark model for the calculation of these decays.

The penguin operators in nonresonant $B^- \to M \bar M π^-$ $(M =π^-, K^-, K^0)$ decays

We investigate the contributions coming from the penguin operators in the nonresonant $B^- \to M \bar M π^-$ ($M =π^-, K^-, K^0$) decays. The effective Wilson coefficients of the the strong penguin operators $O_{4,6}$ are found to be relatively larger. We calculate the contributions arising from the $O_4$ and $O_6$ operators in the nonresonant decays $B^- \to M \bar Mπ^-$ ($M = π^-, K^-, \bar K^0$) using a model combining heavy quark symmetry and the chiral symmetry, developed previously. We find that the forbidden nonresonant $B^- \to K^0 \bar K^0 π^-$ decay occurs through the strong penguin operators. These penguin contributions affect the branching ratios for $B^- \to M \bar Mπ^-$ ($M = π^-, K^-$) by only a few percent. The branching ratio for $B^- \to K^0 \bar K^0 π^-$ is estimated to be of the order $ 10^{-6}$.

Long distance $c \to u γ$ effects in weak radiative decays of D-mesons

We present a detailed analysis of the $D \to V γ$ transitions, using a model which combines heavy quark effective theory and the chiral Lagrangian approach and includes symmetry breaking. We notice that in addition to the previously considered s - channel annihilation and t - channel W - exchange, there is a long distance penguin - like $ c \to u γ$ contribution in the t - channel of Cabibbo - suppressed modes. Its magnitude is determined by the size of symmetry breaking which we calculate with a vector dominance approach. Although smaller in magnitude, the penguin - like contribution would lead to sizeable effects in case of cancellations among the other contributions to the amplitude. Thus, it may invalidate suggested tests for beyond the standard model effects in these decays. We also indicate the range of expectations for the branching ratios of various $D \to V γ$ modes.

SU(3) flavor symmetry breaking and semileptonic decays of heavy mesons

Assuming the ${\bar D}^0, D^-, D^-_s$ and $B^+, B^0, B_s^0$ mesons belong to triplets of SU(3) flavor symmetry, we analyse the form factors in the semileptonic decays of these mesons. Both quark and meson mass differences are taken into account. We find a number of relations, in agreement with the present data as well as with previous analyses, and predict certain ratios of form factors, not yet measured, most notably the D meson decay constant $f_D = 209 \pm 39$ MeV.
