Thermodynamics of $f(R)$ Theories of Gravity

This paper starts from a toy model for inflation in a class of modified theories of gravity in the metric formalism. Instead of the standard procedure -- assuming a non-linear Lagrangian $f(R)$ in the Jordan frame -- we start from a simple $ϕ^2$ potential in the Einstein frame and investigate the corresponding $f(R)$ in the former picture. The addition of an ad-hoc Cosmological Constant in the Einstein frame leads to a Thermodynamical interpretation of this physical system, which allows further insight on its (meta)stability and evolution.

Semiclassical partition function for the double-well potential

We compute the partition function and specific heat for a quantum mechanical particle under the influence of a quartic double-well potential non-perturbatively, using the semiclassical method. Near the region of bounded motion in the inverted potential, the usual quadratic approximation fails due to the existence of multiple classical solutions and caustics. Using the tools of catastrophe theory, we identify the relevant classical solutions, showing that at most two have to be considered. This corresponds to the first step towards the study of spontaneous symmetry breaking and thermal phase transitions in the non-perturbative framework of the boundary effective theory.

Type Ia supernova parameter estimation: a comparison of two approaches using current datasets

By using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) first year type Ia supernova (SN Ia) compilation, we compare two different approaches (traditional χ^2 and complete likelihood) to determine parameter constraints when the magnitude dispersion is to be estimated as well. We consider cosmological constant + Cold Dark Matter (ΛCDM) and spatially flat, constant w Dark Energy + Cold Dark Matter (FwCDM) cosmological models and show that, for current data, there is a small difference in the best fit values and $\sim$ 30% difference in confidence contour areas in case the MLCS2k2 light-curve fitter is adopted. For the SALT2 light-curve fitter the differences are less significant ($\lesssim$ 13% difference in areas). In both cases the likelihood approach gives more restrictive constraints. We argue for the importance of using the complete likelihood instead of the χ^2 approach when dealing with parameters in the expression for the variance.

Homoclinic Chaos in Axisymmetric Bianchi-IX cosmological models with an "ad hoc" quantum potential

In this work we study the dynamics of the axisymmetric Bianchi IX cosmological model with a term of quantum potential added. As it is well known this class of Bianchi IX models are homogeneous and anisotropic with two scale factors, $A(t)$ and $B(t)$, derived from the solution of Einstein's equation for General Relativity. The model we use in this work has a cosmological constant and the matter content is dust. To this model we add a quantum-inspired potential that is intended to represent short-range effects due to the general relativistic behavior of matter in small scales and play the role of a repulsive force near the singularity. We find that this potential restricts the dynamics of the model to positive values of $A(t)$ and $B(t)$ and alters some qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the dynamics studied previously by several authors. We make a complete analysis of the phase space of the model finding critical points, periodic orbits, stable/unstable manifolds using numerical techniques such as Poincaré section, numerical continuation of orbits and numerical globalization of invariant manifolds. We compare the classical and the quantum models. Our main result is the existence of homoclinic crossings of the stable and unstable manifolds in the physically meaningful region of the phase space (where both $A(t)$ and $B(t)$ are positive), indicating chaotic escape to inflation and bouncing near the singularity.
