Light-Front Quantum Chromodynamics: A framework for the analysis of hadron physics

An outstanding goal of physics is to find solutions that describe hadrons in the theory of strong interactions, Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). For this goal, the light-front Hamiltonian formulation of QCD (LFQCD) is a complementary approach to the well-established lattice gauge method. LFQCD offers access to the hadrons' nonperturbative quark and gluon amplitudes, which are directly testable in experiments at existing and future facilities. We present an overview of the promises and challenges of LFQCD in the context of unsolved issues in QCD that require broadened and accelerated investigation. We identify specific goals of this approach and address its quantifiable uncertainties.

Spontaneously broken quark helicity symmetry

We discuss the origin of chiral symmetry breaking in the light-cone representation of QCD. In particular, we show how quark helicity symmetry is spontaneously broken in SU(N) gauge theory with massless quarks if that theory has a condensate of fermion lightcone zero modes. The symmetry breaking appears as induced interactions in an effective lightcone Hamiltonian equation based on a trivial vacuum. The induced interaction is crucial for generating a splitting between pseudoscalar and vector meson masses, which we illustrate with spectrum calculations in some 1+1-dimensional reduced models of gauge theory.

Glueballs on a transverse lattice

Accurate non-perturbative calculations of glueballs are performed using light-front quantised SU(N) gauge theory, to leading order of the 1/N expansion. Based on early work of Bardeen and Pearson, disordered gauge-covariant link variables M on a coarse transverse lattice are used to approximate the physical gauge degrees of freedom. Simple energetics imply that, at lattice spacings of order the inverse QCD scale, the effective light-front Hamiltonian can be expanded in gauge-invariant powers of M: a colour-dielectric expansion. This leads to a self-consistent constituent structure of boundstates. We fix the couplings of this expansion by optimising Lorentz covariance of low-energy eigenfunctions. To lowest non-trivial order of the expansion, we have found a one-parameter trajectory of couplings that enhances Lorentz covariance. On this trajectory the masses of nearly-covariant glueball states exhibit approximate scaling, having values consistent with large-N extrapolations of continuum results from other methods. There is very little variation with N in pure Yang-Mills theory: the lightest glueball mass changes by only a few percent between SU(3) and SU(infinity). The corresponding light-front wavefunctions show an unconventional structure. We also examine restoration of rotational invariance in the heavy-source potential.

Colour-Dielectric Gauge Theory on a Transverse Lattice

We investigate in some detail consequences of the effective colour-dielectric formulation of lattice gauge theory using the light-cone Hamiltonian formalism with a transverse lattice. As a quantitative test of this approach, we have performed extensive analytic and numerical calculations for 2+1-dimensional pure gauge theory in the large N limit. Because of Eguchi-Kawai reduction, one effectively studies a 1+1-dimensional gauge theory coupled to matter in the adjoint representation. We study the structure of coupling constant space for our effective potential by comparing with the physical results available from conventional Euclidean lattice Monte Carlo simulations of this system. In particular, we calculate and measure the scaling behaviour of the entire low-lying glueball spectrum, glueball wavefunctions, string tension, asymptotic density of states, and deconfining temperature. We employ a new hybrid DLCQ/wavefunction basis in our calculations of the light-cone Hamiltonian matrix elements, along with extrapolation in Tamm-Dancoff truncation, significantly reducing numerical errors. Finally we discuss, in light of our results, what further measurements and calculations could be made in order to systematically remove lattice spacing dependence from our effective potential a priori.

The Influence of Higher Fock States in Light-Cone Gauge Theories

In the light-cone Fock state expansion of gauge theories, the influence of non-valence states may be significant in precision non-perturbative calculations. In two-dimensional gauge theories, it is shown how these states modify the behaviour of the light-cone wavefunction in significant ways relative to endemic choices of variational ansatz. Similar effects in four-dimensional gauge theories are briefly discussed.

Transverse Lattice Approach to Light-Front Hamiltonian QCD

We describe a non-perturbative procedure for solving from first principles the light-front Hamiltonian problem of SU(N) pure gauge theory in D spacetime dimensions (D>2), based on enforcing Lorentz covariance of observables. A transverse lattice regulator and colour-dielectric link fields are employed, together with an associated effective potential. We argue that the light-front vacuum is necessarily trivial for large enough lattice spacing, and clarify why this leads to an Eguchi-Kawai dimensional reduction of observables to 1+1-dimensions in the infinite N limit. The procedure is then tested by explicit calculations for 2+1-dimensional SU(infinity) gauge theory, within a first approximation to the lattice effective potential. We identify a scaling trajectory which produces Lorentz covariant behaviour for the lightest glueballs. The predicted masses, in units of the measured string tension, are in agreement with recent results from conventional Euclidean lattice simulations. In addition, we obtain the potential between heavy sources and the structure of the glueballs from their light-front wavefunctions. Finally, we briefly discuss the extension of these calculations to 3+1-dimensions.

Random Matrix Solution of a Polymer Collapse Model

A polymer folding model on the square lattice is constructed with attractive contact interactions of strength 1/c^2, 0<c<1. The corresponding model on a dynamical random lattice, with freely fluctuating co-ordination number at each vertex, is formulated as a random two-matrix model and an expression for the partition function of a length-L chain is derived. Numerical estimates and analytical evaluation for L \to \infty shows a third-order collapse transition at c=\sqrt{2}-1. Geometrical critical exponents are computed in each phase and interpreted. The Knizhnik-Polyakov-Zamolodchikov 2D quantum gravity scaling relations are used to predict the corresponding behaviour on the regular lattice, which lies in a different universality class from the percolation Theta-point of Duplantier and Saleur.

String Spectrum of 1+1-Dimensional Large N QCD with Adjoint Matter

We propose gauging matrix models of string theory to eliminate unwanted non-singlet states. To this end we perform a discretised light-cone quantisation of large N gauge theory in 1+1 dimensions, with scalar or fermionic matter fields transforming in the adjoint representation of SU(N). The entire spectrum consists of bosonic and fermionic closed-string excitations, which are free as N tends to infinity. We analyze the general features of such bound states as a function of the cut-off and the gauge coupling, obtaining good convergence for the case of adjoint fermions. We discuss possible extensions of the model and the search for new non-critical string theories.

The Weingarten Model a la Polyakov

The Weingarten lattice gauge model of Nambu-Goto strings is generalised to allow for fluctuations of an intrinsic worldsheet metric through a dynamical quadrilation. The continuum limit is taken for $c\leq1$ matter, reproducing the results of hermitian matrix models to all orders in the genus expansion. For the compact $c=1$ case the vortices are Wilson lines, whose exclusion leads to the theory of non-interacting fermions. As a by-product of the analysis one finds the critical behaviour of SOS and vertex models coupled to 2D quantum gravity.
